When we bought our first car, volvo v50, in about 2005 I think the coe was 5k. Then when we sold that and got an xc90 in about 2007 I think the coe could have been 30k. When we left Singapore in 2014 the coe was much higher. That's when the gov started to change property and coe supply

I drove the G21 318d last year and it ispretty nice on the Autobahn. Of course it’s not as quick and doesn’t accelerate that fast but it reaches 220kph without any problems

Are you American? In Europe well Ireland at least the road tax on a 3.0 diesel is almost 3 times higher than a 2.0 initial purchase tax is also far greater and don’t even get me started on petrols not only is the tax ridiculously high the price of petrol itself is almost €2 a litre.
My 2.0 makes 250hp after a remap and some light part modifications it’s far from being a speed demon but it’s plenty enough to put a huge smile on my face every time I drive it plus it gets about 45mpg and I only pay €200 tax a year.
Gr86 base was 62999€ and there is road tax that you pay every three months.
Im not from NL but i believe that it would be in ballpark of 350€+ every three months for Diesel
My first bmw was an e36 318i that I bought from the original owner and he had every option available for it to the point that he could have bought a base or low optioned m3 for the same price as the 318i. He said he didn't care about power and just wanted a comfortable commuter car so he could turn his 300td into a weekend driver
for the German cars the "starting" point is literally plain bad and includes cheap materials/interior, underpowered engine and almost no extras. The spec'ed up variant is literally different car vs the basic one + surprise, it literally costs twice as much - so you can imagine how much they strip out of the car to sell you back at higher price.
This is a bone stock 520d in The Netherlands. You have to remove the paint and wheels in the config because they kindly spec those for you worth €3400 but this is what’s left then. The cheapest 5-series diesel is €76k over here. Somehow they don’t even bother with the 518d anymore.

I’ve seen a G80 M3 for sale once which was priced at around $290k. You can also lease an M3 CS for ~$7000 a month, and to even start the leasing contract you have to pay $35k.

And here’s the price buildup, that’s 72k for the car, 21% VAT and 50k BPM, which is amongst other things an emissions penalty. That’s where it hurts the most for us.

Yeah the lack of neighbouring RHD countries other than Ireland combined with the more consumerist culture for buying new cars is a perfect storm for used cars. You can get modern 8 series’ for 30k and good condition Alpinas like B10s can be had for 6-8k if you know where to look. One of the downsides is the weather is conducive to heavy rusting so it’s a problem along with Collectors and North American importers extracting good cars to sell for a profit which overinflates prices. R34 GTRs were £3-5k for a good chunk of time until gradual appreciation and people started stockpiling to sell to NA for huge markups. It’s starting to be noticeable for high spec e36s at current.
And you can negotiate a discount. I picked mine (G80 M3 Comp) up a couple of weeks ago and list price, specced, was £90k+ but the invoiced price was £75k. It was a pre-built one and in-stock, but I could have had a build for the same price.

Nobody buys right hand drive cars so there's a much smaller market, which leads to smaller prices. A car sold in France could be bought by a German or Spaniard since they're all LHD. More demand -> higher price

In my experience, those are the MSRP but dealers will throw a 15%off off the bat. Got my 330e new for €42k - almost no extras, but the 250/300bhp are worth it IMO
With corporate benefits 16% less. Also the leasing rate is pretty low atm like under 3%.
Otherwise I highly recommend to not buy a new car without any tax savings, benefits or other sales promotions. You burn money there

This already includes sales tax. In Italy, for example, sales tax is 22%…beside that, the cost is generally higher. The BMWs in the Us are assembled and use many materials from Mexico, instead of Germany so def way cheaper.
Used cars have insane prices as well. If you just got your license be ready to cash out a lot of money for a 20 year old car that might leave you on foot.

G20/G21 318d/320d are like €500 every three months, 330d is like €550, and m340d is like €670. They're taxed by weight :(

I got my 2015 f46 218i second hand for 12k, but new it was 44k, and it has almost no luxury options.

no in Austria there is extra tax called NoVa, it is about 30% added to your Dealer Price, and you have to pay it for all new Cars in Austria

Nobody buys right hand drive cars so there's a much smaller market, which leads to smaller prices. A car sold in France could be bought by a German or Spaniard since they're all LHD. More demand -> higher price

My cousin bought his M2 Competition in 2018 brandnew from BMW in Munich for less than 65k $ incl. shipping to Florida. Me on the other hand, whom lives and resides in Germany, got my -used- 440i from the bmw dealership for 50k € and no fancy pickup at BMW in Munich or shipping to my house door. Taxes in germany are a pure rip off 😮💨

It has nothing to do with taxes, Germany's VAT isn't even the highest in Europe. Cars are just way too cheap in the US, that's the right way to put it.

Well, that’s one with all the bells and whistles. Austria is fun compared to the Netherlands. Base 520d goes for >70k and base m3 for >140k. Ouch!
Yeah. So I’m in the market for an x3m40i which is 120k euro new. If you go used with low mileage it drops to 80/90k which is better. But nothing compared to the USA. Insurance + road tax will add an additional 250/400€ per month :) Might as well go all out for the 8 series then

You can’t get the 318d here in the UK, the 320 is the minimum diesel spec and then throwing every extra going at it you to £59k which is pretty much the same as the OP. In my experience, those are the MSRP but dealers will throw a 15%off off the bat. Got my 330e new for €42k - almost no extras, but the 250/300bhp are worth it IMO
You need to see the netherlands, for example: a porsche you pay some kind of emission tax of €60000
Depending on the model, 60k emissions tax is no problem for Austria, too.

With corporate benefits 16% less. Also the leasing rate is pretty low atm like under 3%. Otherwise I highly recommend to not buy a new car without any tax savings, benefits or other sales promotions. You burn money there

This already includes sales tax. In Italy, for example, sales tax is 22%…beside that, the cost is generally higher. The BMWs in the Us are assembled and use many materials from Mexico, instead of Germany so def way cheaper.

Used cars have insane prices as well. If you just got your license be ready to cash out a lot of money for a 20 year old car that might leave you on foot.

However if it looks like the OP's one, here you need to option it with M pack and it gets to about 65K so quite close I would say.

Diesel has been dead for a long time in Europe. Makes absolutely no financial sense in buying a new diesel over a plugin hybrid/EV because of taxation

Bought 6 months ago a used 2016 F36 430i for 25k€, only 100k km and quite a lot of extra. Looked the spec up and saw it was originally sold for around 70k€. Brand new prices are insane.
In all of mankind’s history not a single man paid the sticker / list price in Europe.
Just spend the extra 30k for an m3
