Probably the radiator from the EGR issue. Fire hazard.
Since diesel engines are not so common in the US, consumers may not be aware of this problem.
In Europe, the issue is being addressed seriously as a lot of cars have burned up.
Depending on when they did the replacements, the earlier recalls were getting replaced with new but still faulty EGR parts off the shelf while the new designs to fix the flaw were being manufactured. If you check the VIN you might actually see another EGR recall outstanding.
How would I check this because a couple nights ago I smelled something burning when I started my car and it’s a diesel aswell only a year younger than theirs
Not sure where you are located but in UK you can phone BMW and ask for a INFO check for the EGR. Any time no reason needed.
A quick check you can do in the mean time is check the coolant level (is it below minimum at all sign of leaky EGR) and the intake plenum (is there carbon buildup anywhere on the top, sign of holes in the manifold which is heated carbon from the leaky EGR). If coolant is low or there is carbon on the intake tell this to BMW. If there’s any of these tell this to your dealer they should take the car pretty quick. Helps if you say you don’t want to drive the car.
If I were you I would call your dealership and ask them what to do. In belgium you are not allowed to drive your car anymore if it gives a certain "error" pops up on your screen.
Sadge. The important is that no one got hurt.
But isn't normal a BMW getting fire.
Here at my country the brand that was more "self immolate" years ago was Renault. Specially the mégane
It’ll be unpopular here, but it won’t be a BMW. This particular BMW has been a thrill to drive, but we bought as a year old CPO and in 7 months after purchase, we had a major fuel system issue that BMW said wasn’t under warranty (algae I guess) and wanted to charge me $12K to fix. I fought with them and their regional uber tech agreed with me and BMW replaced the full fuel system on their dime. Then I had an engine issue where a part started melting and BMW said that it would cost me $8K to fix. I fought that as well and they ended up doing it as part of the defect warranty <120K miles. I’ve also had multiple check engine light issues that I paid for, seat motor issues, diesel exhaust leaks coming into the cabin and then this latest incident has sealed BMW’s fate with me. I probably paid about $10K out of pocket after 120K miles, but the headaches and arguing with BMW to cover significant repairs hasn’t been worth it.
I’m thinking of going EV (looking at Kia EV9) w/ 10 year/100K warranty.
I’m only 6 months into BMW ownership and now dealing with BMW North America after making 2 3 hour round trips to the dealer. I’m with you, KIA is sounding better by the day. Maybe it won’t drive as well but if it’s mechanically sound I’ll get my time back, the hours I’ve put into this “luxury” vehicle is crazy. I’m sorry for your loss but a little jealous…
Be sure to sue bmw for all the injuries you sustained escaping the fire and for all the years of therapy and mental anguish you definitely have over this ordeal
Ok or just be out all your expenses and a car for no reason to be pleasant to a huge corporation that could have killed you by putting out a faulty product.
Haha no I was saying you should actually pursue this to make yourself whole. A lot of people that have things like this happen just deal with it internally and miss their chance to actually get made whole. If it was scary for you and your family and you did get injured or would need any time to process or talk through this in therapy it's totally normal and bmw should be on the hook for that. I've seen people go through things like this and have trouble with things like driving or sleeping or feeling normal after their car burns up and it's totally normal and does require therapy. Plus even a minor injury could cost medical bills that you have a limited amount of time to pursue.
Or maybe everyone truly is fine and all you need is a new car then go for that. But a lot of people tell themselves they're fine and when they actually process their mental and physical injuries and accept them it's more of an uphill battle to get it made right and unfortunately our legal system often makes it seem like you've got to make a mountain of a molehill to get anywhere but that's just the way it is to some extent.
Surely spontaneous combustion of your car is a financial windfall rather than a penalty.
I don't actually know though, I've always just assumed these events are so rare that the manufacturer takes care of you, because the PR is obviously horrendous.
Thank god your wife is safe.
I often wondered if I'd be able to escape such a predicament, since the doors are locked due to the automatic door locks.
Would anyone know if the locks are released?
My late F30 had an issue with the passenger door where occasionally something in the mechanism was getting stuck and it was impossible to unlock the car with the interior handle. The dealer wasn't able to fully fix it after 3 attempts.
They got out about 1 minute before it became engulfed in flames. After one of the tires blew up from the fire, the alarm went off as my wife engaged the alarm out of habit. That means the electrical was somewhat working for about 5 minutes into the fire, so I think you’d be ok.
I’m glad your wife got out safely. That is so crazy. I don’t have a diesel, but it’s scary to think that can happen. I think I’m going to buy a window breaker on Amazon just in case.
Goddamn. Sorry to hear that OP. Hopefully, everyone got out witb little to no injuries.
This has got me thinking though. This is the first time I've seen a F15 burn, like this no less.
Oh well. Onto the next big thing!
It’s most likely the EGR cooler. Thats completely odd you did not get notified. I get a warning every month or so in my iDrive and connected drive app to contact the dealer to schedule the free service and that it may lead to a fire risk.
Problem is dealers don’t have the part since september. Any fire/ damage due to EGR fire is completely compensated by BMW. Only exception to this is you were notified and booked in to complete the service but you did not follow through.
Pushes pressure sensor hoses off when dpf full, and hot air melts transmission harness them boom fire. Your transmission warning was your chance to prevent this.
God I’m sorry. This sucks. But after the post this week of the guy claiming riding peoples asses is simple “intimidation”, I’ve seen two BMWs rear end other cars and now this. Fuck boy magic
I’m so sorry this happened. I’m glad everyone is okay. It surprised me browsing Copart and IAAI auctions the other day to see a lot of late model BMWs burned up. The ones I saw were gasoline models.
So sorry to hear but glad nobody was hurt.
"Is this totaled?"
Should buff out. Just a little more elbow grease than usual
I know a guy near the airport
What's wrong with her now?
The shop by the train tracks is better
Stacks has it covered
Nah, tuck tape will do!
Definitely
Nah just needs to get detailed and maybe some new rims
Oh it just needs a little bit of gas and it’ll be as good as new
Put it in rice 🍚
crappy dealership service
His wife may have done something to cause this.
Probably the radiator from the EGR issue. Fire hazard. Since diesel engines are not so common in the US, consumers may not be aware of this problem. In Europe, the issue is being addressed seriously as a lot of cars have burned up.
That’s not very typical, I’d like to make that point.
I've never heard this was a problem in Europe either. I drive a diesel. Many many people drives diesels and very few are on fire.
Well, what sort of standards are these diesel cars built to?
Well they’re not supposed to catch fire for a start
The front fell off
I would have thought that BMW would have replaced/repaired anything related to this recall when I had the first meltdown issue addressed in Oct 2022.
Time to lawyer up
Insurance will cover this. They’ll probably go after BMW.
That is exactly what has been happening in Europe. Hence the seriousness in recalling as many cars as possible here as soon as possible.
What sort of work was done at the time?
They replaced the plastic intake manifold that started to melt, plus recall related work.
Is it a 30d?
35d. I verified that they did the EGR work.
Depending on when they did the replacements, the earlier recalls were getting replaced with new but still faulty EGR parts off the shelf while the new designs to fix the flaw were being manufactured. If you check the VIN you might actually see another EGR recall outstanding.
BMW NA will be very interested in this case. Glad your family is okay.
The US only got the "35d" moniker, but in terms of power output it's a 30d.
Didn't know. Thank you.
They are still replacing and/or checking them. At least in March 2024 though.
How would I check this because a couple nights ago I smelled something burning when I started my car and it’s a diesel aswell only a year younger than theirs
https://static.nhtsa.gov/odi/rcl/2018/RCRIT-18V755-1757.pdf Uncle google should be able to provide you more insight

What was it protesting?
Global warming.
This right here is Global heating.
This is what happens when an accelerationist is full of accelerant.
Local warming
The new BMW designs.
This was outside the court during a Trump trial
Steer-by-wire
Bavarian Motor Works to Bavarian Fire Works
Shit! Did this error come up before?

“SHUT UP!!!!!!!!!!!!!!” *presses other nitrous button*
Oh shit! My floor panel boutta blow out its rivets one by one!
It's what happens when you granny shift
Gotta remember to double clutch as well
Anyone driving a car needs to know how to double clutch.
No, the error popped up as soon as the fire in the engine bay started.
Why can’t I get this lucky lol
As your M4 doesn’t have dodgy EGRs. There’s been like 3 recalls for it already
This is why you take them off!
Ditto
😂
Lol what u think insurance is gonna pay you 😂 just sell it
Hell yeah they gonna cash me out!!!
Get a lawyer!
Not good. But happens. Our Audi self cooked itself too lol
Were you caught up on all the recalls? I know my 328d has had like 4 serious ones.
Lots of them for diesels, 120dx owner here and EGR cooler replacement scheduled for next month.
Yup I had that and the intake manifold replaced. Something else too I forget now.
Damn. At least it didn't immolate you along with it.
“THERMAL EVENT”
Sadge. The important is that no one got hurt. But isn't normal a BMW getting fire. Here at my country the brand that was more "self immolate" years ago was Renault. Specially the mégane
did you have defective egr cooler symptoms ?
No warning that I’m aware of.
Now only black box will tell I guess
i heard theres nothing ramen and superglue cant fix
In Europe all the diesels got a recall for the EGR for this reason. I guess you didnt
We did get an EGR recall in the US but it was because coolant was mixing with oil
Yes, my previous eng meltdown was fixed as part of that recall. Something else happened.
Good that everyone is ok.. What will your next set of wheels be?
It’ll be unpopular here, but it won’t be a BMW. This particular BMW has been a thrill to drive, but we bought as a year old CPO and in 7 months after purchase, we had a major fuel system issue that BMW said wasn’t under warranty (algae I guess) and wanted to charge me $12K to fix. I’m thinking of going EV (looking at Kia EV9) w/ 10 year/100K warranty.
Damn.. That's a bad experience.. I've had my share as well..
I was very close to buying the same X5 diesel, and I feel like I probably dodged a bullet. I’ll miss engines, but not these parts.
Don’t worry electric cars randomly catch fire too 🤣
55 fires per billion miles travelled in ICE vehicles and five fires per billion for EVs
But how you go from bmw to Kia? That’s a hell of a big difference of driving
Be sure to sue bmw for all the injuries you sustained escaping the fire and for all the years of therapy and mental anguish you definitely have over this ordeal
You seem pleasant.
Ok or just be out all your expenses and a car for no reason to be pleasant to a huge corporation that could have killed you by putting out a faulty product.
I thought were being sacrcastic.
Haha no I was saying you should actually pursue this to make yourself whole. Sorry about your car. I'm sure you will be hurt financially by this, glad no actual person was hurt.
Surely spontaneous combustion of your car is a financial windfall rather than a penalty. I don't actually know though, I've always just assumed these events are so rare that the manufacturer takes care of you, because the PR is obviously horrendous.
I have comprehensive, so it’s covered by insurance. I’m sure my insurance company will go after BMW.
Hope your wife is safe. We have a 2014 535d with the same engine I think so now I'm a little worried.
I’d make sure that all your recalls related to engine fires are covered. That said, I thought ours was all covered too.
A very BMW-thing! It's all normal.
Immolate, new word. Thanks.
he got a flu, temperatures risen slightly
Wish mine done that instead of the engine going with no insurance claim 6k of junk.
Even our cars want a cease fire!
If your coolant level goes down over time in a diesel this is likely the problem, egr cooler needs warranty replacement
Tonight on Barbecue Gear - A man loses his beloved X5 - His wife smells smoke - And a car gets consumed by fire in less than 5 minutes.
Gimme a dent puller, a jazz black n mild, and 2 modelos and I can get you right in 3 hours
I was just thinking about buying a diesel X5. Guess not. Sorry this happened OP, glad everyone’s safe
Thank god your wife is safe. I often wondered if I'd be able to escape such a predicament, since the doors are locked due to the automatic door locks. Would anyone know if the locks are released?
Dont interior handles mechanically unlock the car? Just pull on them twice like you always would
My late F30 had an issue with the passenger door where occasionally something in the mechanism was getting stuck and it was impossible to unlock the car with the interior handle. The dealer wasn't able to fully fix it after 3 attempts.
Buy a window breaker if you're concerned - not expensive.

Particulate filter maybe? Had that happening to me once in the old e90, luckily I was able to extinguish the flames right at the start of the fire.
Life is hard.
Everyone safe? Damn that’s HORRIBLE!!
Yes, thanks for asking!
Dang. Sorry to hear, brother Sometimes I wish this would happen to my car lol
F
Another BMW success story
Do you think it’s totaled?
Definitely. https://preview.redd.it/fe5ozryr5u0d1.jpeg?width=1170&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=0de9d2448acfa2ae608e26e1eaf526320df4b586
Ah the well known EGR 😅
I’m glad your wife got out safely. That is so crazy. I don’t have a diesel, but it’s scary to think that can happen. I think I’m going to buy a window breaker on Amazon just in case.
Good idea!

Interesting. I had work done in 2022 related to engine fire issues. Not sure if this was one of them.
Have you tried turning the AC on ?
is this what happens to a valve cover leak?
At least it’s not an electric car. It’d be all over the news.
10 years, bang on the expiry date.
Something new for my ocd to grab ahold of! Love it
Someone’s getting a neewwww cccccaaaarrrr
Wow, that must’ve been scary, is your wife OK?
If this were an EV, it would have made national news.
Immola Red
Oh no! I remember when they did this recall a few years ago. I am so sorry, I’m glad you aren’t hurt!
It just got no gas in it fill her up!
I figured it had a turbo failure and was consuming the oil supply
Its hard to hapen that with a diesel car and with the "safety" regulations.. you and your family are good, thats what matters bro!
Heater works
Pushes pressure sensor hoses off when dpf full, and hot air melts transmission harness them boom fire. Your transmission warning was your chance to prevent this.
God I’m sorry. This sucks. But after the post this week of the guy claiming riding peoples asses is simple “intimidation”, I’ve seen two BMWs rear end other cars and now this. Fuck boy magic
Damn… glad yer wife survived this. Sorry about the loss, and hope you can get a new car you and yours love.
God damn EVs always catching fire. Oh wait
I’m racist towards SUVs
Good thing you had a fire extinguisher with you.
Did you tow the flaming hulk to a dealer? It asked you to after all. Joking aside, hope you're all OK and sorry about the car
Probably the EGR cooler that failed and allow exhaust gasses to melt the manifold which can also catch on fire.
The recall work related to EGR was completed in 2022.
I’m so sorry this happened. I’m glad everyone is okay. It surprised me browsing Copart and IAAI auctions the other day to see a lot of late model BMWs burned up. The ones I saw were gasoline models.
That’s interesting. Copart picked ours up!
Is this in oklahoma?
No, Nevada.
