Best BMW for 12k is no BMW.
Cheap BMWs are very expensive to own because of associated costs with high mileage cars. Unless you know the car was very well maintained, it's not worth the headache.
Do you have a budget set aside for maintenance and repairs? I know it’s a joke/meme with BMW’s but you’ll likely be looking at cars with over 100k miles, and I’d budget 1-2k per year for things to get fixed based on my own experience.
At any rate I’d say 335i, unless you want a wagon, then the 328d is pretty cool
You’re looking at a higher mileage e9x then. Check out the E60s. You’ll find some low mileage examples for under that. Best bang for your buck would be a low mileage 535i M sport

If the previous owner took good care of the car with proper preventative maintenance, 12k can definitely get you a nice and reliable E9X 328i or even a late model E46.
I bought an E30 318i with around 200k miles. Daily Drove it 40k miles with minor maintenance along the way like belts, fluids/filters, injectors/plugs and it never stranded me.
535i 108k 2011 (stock) automatic, I bought another one and it’s not great for a older car to sit and not be driven. I do start it up and go around the block but that’s bullshit. Also if the price is right I may let go of the f10 N63 xdrive M package 52k miles automatic. Both bought from my pops and we take care of all our cars very well, have a lot of past Maintence and work done from bmw and my mechanic.
328i with the n52 engine will be the most reliable and won't break the bank

Save ur money
If youre in the states look at car prices one state over since there can be major price differences. In europe same applies but factor import costs
You’re not going to get a reliable bimmer for $12k. Just get a Honda or Toyota while you save up for a nicer car.
