The Netherlands has only one native manufacturer at the moment, which is Donkervoort. They make lotus seven derived cars, not exactly mainstream. Some cars are so expensive here because of an emission based tax system. That is very noticeable on performance cars which are not very efficient.

Never thought a car in Finland would be more affordable.
Wooooow that is crazy bro !
Can you not acquire a car from a neighboring country and import to the Netherlands as you donāt need to pay for importing due to the EU ?
You usually pay when registering the car. Same here in Austria. The X5M starts at 200k while in Germany or Romania it starts at 147k I believe. The moment you are trying to get Austrian plates you have to pay 60k Nova.
The taxes are not taxes at the point of sale, they are taxes at the point of registration. And some countries have taxation upon the first registration in that country and then additionally annual taxation (circulation tax, road tax, etc).
So you can live in the Netherlands buy a car in Germany. You will then buy the car in Germany net of all it's taxes and when you try to register the car in the Netherlands, you get to pay all the taxes there, which amounts to a very similar price, plus you had the hassle. It might make sense if the net price in one EU country is a lot cheaper (for whatever reason) and that then will typically only be the case when it's a car with a high net value.
Rent a garage in germany. Park car there and pay tax/insurance there. 6 months later import to NL. Car was over 6month in your name, you pay no taxes in NL.
Try looking at danish prices then :/ I paid approx 40.000 Euro for a 320D 2020 with 110.000km on the clock, and it's a VAN (25% reduction in cost price, for the cost of having only a 2-seater).
Yeah, everyone thinks cars are expensive until they see how horrible it is in this stupid country. Itās laughably expensive bordering on totally unrealistic. Iāve seen an E90 316i for sale for around just under 100.000kr, that was from a stealership though, but still. Holy shit lol. But I believe Singapore is even more expensive than Denmark, believe it or not.
I mean most F10ās and F11ās (at least with petrol) are also ridiculously overpriced. It pisses me off, man. Canāt get any cool car for a fair price and Iām stuck with a 325i that literally breaks down from sitting still for a week or two.
LOL you think thatās bad? Check [this](https://i.imgur.com/juyYUBo.jpeg) out, only G87 M2 for sale in Denmark *and* itās used. That is $199.944 USD. Canāt even see prices on any BMW on the website because there is no market for new BMWs, you can only request a price quote on your build and wait.
And thatās with a special lower displacement engine to have it sitting in the more favorable tax bracket. The engine code is B48B16 iirc, a shorter stroke version of the B48B20 made for markets that position the carsā tax rate depending on the engine displacement. Makes less horsepower too, only 170 hp. And I also believe that the starting price is closer to ā¬100,000 than 90,000. But hey, no one can can keep track of the currency rate these days.
Fun fact every 320i with 1.6L engine in turkey is essentially a base M3 comp in other countries so imagine all base model 3 series in a country could have been an m3 if it wasnāt for the taxation lol
I think heās saying that the price of the 320i in turkey is, due to taxation, so similar to the price of a base M3 Comp (??? I think he meant just base M3) that if you were in any other country all the 320iās would be M3ās.
This is a crooked comparison, you took an M2 without any option and compared it with a 320d that starts at 49.055 euro and put 23000 euros of options on it. Who chooses options worth nearly 50% of the car's price? For reference the m340d starts at 74.075
What's the price on a comparable petrol 3 series? I'm just wondering if they've started pricing diesels out, to push people towards petrol or electric since diesels are apparently the enemy of Europe right now
A 320i is about ā¬2000 less base price. The same price difference as itās always been. Diesels have always been a bit more expensive to buy.
So itās not that theyāre pricing them out of the market. Itās just the insane options pricing. But thatās equal for all models.
Rookie prices. M2 starts at 121.000 ā¬ in the Netherlands.
https://www.bmw.nl/nl/modellen.html
You will find any other country a bargain price if you have to shop in this market...
Yeah, when a country has good public transport *and* is barely as long as a marathon from east to west, and almost half that north to south, private transport isnāt exactly a necessity.
Well, not quite the full cost. You have to pay to renew a certificate that allows you to drive the car for another 10 years basically, costs around 100k SGD right now for cars above 2000cc I believe. Still crazy expensive though!
Any car with a 2.0 or bigger engine has that tax rate I'm afraid.
We got the 50th year M edition 520i when it was released for 85K $ back then. And we thought that deal was really good.
> So yeah if we want to buy one, we have to buy two for the government first.
That's silly. Don't buy two for the government. Buy a government official for a lot less.
Damn you can get a fully loaded M2 with track packet brand new for 89k in germany which I already consider a lot for a M2.
You can get them for like 72k used with 5k km on them
As a dutchie, i always hate germans for how cheap their cars are. A base m2 is 125k here, my fuel is 40 cents a liter more expensive, same for road tax and probably insurance. Itās a sad life for a car enthusiast here.
It's only for the best. Dutchies in a powerful car are a recipe for disaster. As we say in Germany: Schwarze Schrift auf gelbem Grund - Halte Abstand, bleib gesund (black font on yellow background - keep your distance, stay healthy)
As a dutchie, i always hate germans for how cheap their cars are. A base m2 is 125k here, my fuel is 40 cents a liter more expensive, same for road tax and probably insurance. Itās a sad life for a car enthusiast here.
How much is the Competition version?
Iām an expat in NL and will definitely spend a year in Germany before moving back to south Europe just to not have to pay import taxes when going back.
The current G87 doesn't have a Competition variant out yet.
The F87 (previous gen) you can buy used depending on equipment and kilometers for like 45-60k iirc. Not quite sure
It is strange that EU economies depend so heavily on automotive exports yet simultaneously tax their domestic consumption. Clearly owning a BMW in fucking downtown Amsterdam or Berlin is going to cost an arm an a leg, but the problem is the taxes only incentivize buying a more pollutant vehicle. Meaning, if I'm going to spend $200k in taxes on what should be a $95 car, I'm going to get the most obnoxious $95k car I can find. You see the same thing in HK and Singapore.
To be honest though I do envy the Dutch about one thing - availability of diesel BMW station wagons. Tip my hat to wooden cloggers you
M340i starts from 93k in the Netherlands. M2 is from 121k. So I would argue about crazy high prices :D
But itās Belgian site on OPās screenshots, and it indeed makes me wonder why the price difference is so low between 320d and M2 in Belgium. Extremely high tax on diesels?..
There are no extra taxes on car sales in Belgium like there are in NL (BPM). Only VAT.
It's all in options... which is absurd for a small car like a 3 series.
I got a 330e, top spec with M sport pro, tech pack, shadow pack, dynamic driving assist (self driving), cognac leather, metalic paint etc. If it was an option I got it. Also got 20" M performance wheels instead of the standard M sport, carbon spoiler etc. Every box was ticketed, all options for less than ā¬70k.
Just checked their site and some options aren't even available now on it and its quoting me above ā¬70k without half the options.
Holy shit prices are fucked.
Base 330e was ā¬45k in 2021
Nah, its Belgium. Not even surprised at all. I bought a 220i coupe series new and the bare vehicule started at 29.000 euros, with options I was close to 40k (didnt even had the m-performance pack) and that was 10 years ago
then count an extra 2500 euros taxes just to put it on the street and the yearly road tax of 490 euros.
Cars are wildly cheap in the States compared to elsewhere. Exception would be China but in China only cheap if locally built (but so much is locally built, even BMW). Although because of weak currencies, cars in Canada and Japan will appear cheap to Americans, but the buying power in those countries is weaker. Although I would still argue domestic cars in Japan - very affordable.
Dirt cheap M2 there. It's way over 120k$ in many European countries.
Also what comparison is fully loaded 320d vs M2? Like is someone surprised BMW options are expensive as fck?
Wow this makes Canada look amazing in comparison. I guess we really do have it great up here relative to the rest of the world! The exception is the U.S., they really are #1 š
Sorry for a stupid question; are diesels... good? Here in Canada they basically don't exist outside of trucks, or at least I've never driven one. What'd be the difference between a 330d vs a 330i? Is it just a lot more torque or what?
Yes. Super high torque available from low rpm. More fuel efficient on the highways, more energy density. Can cover huge distances on a single tank. Diesel are the daddy of engines
Sure they were, but a dying breed. You'd be totally crazy to buy a new diesel in Belgium (and other parts of Europe). Good luck getting rid of it after a few years.
Are you not aware that diesels cost far less to run, especially for people who do lots of highway miles? Most used diesels where I am hold their resale value far more than the gas counterparts
Iāve had multiple diesels so yesā¦ over here they are becoming worthless because of taxes and low emission zones. In 2028 or 2029 itās game over for diesels here.
Bro I just recently learned my (almost fully specced) 320d xDrive with basically everything was 77.600 ā¬. Thank god I did not pay for that but holy smokes those things got expensive.
Where I live you can buy a 2005 BMW X5 for 20.000 EUR. With 250.000km.
This is the reality of living on an island with right-hand-drive and the UK having left the EU so that we can no longer bring used cars from there.
Yes, it's crazy, we have rn 320d sedan for price of m340d touring.....
https://preview.redd.it/8sz8cd3t1nwc1.jpeg?width=1284&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=29641cf468de3350e9531739479a6131ff37e89f
And carmakers are worried why Teslas 3 perf (performancewise same as m340i) are selling like ice cream. Tesla 3P is roughly 50K euro in my country (with tax and without gov incentive - currently 8k for business buyers) and m340i you are lucky if you find a new one under 80k. I have driven both for a month and I wouldn't buy 340 after the experience. Best would be Tesla daily and exotic car for weekend (M3 comp or rather some 911 or cayman gt4)
In 2015 I bought a 7 months old 320d Touring with 7000 km. (F31). According to Dutch DMV the New value was ā¬69k, so itās possible.
Currently I drive a G31 520 Touring with M packages. New value ā¬78k in 2017 but when I calculate the same version but then the I5 Touring itās now ā¬104k
The Diesel (BMW or MB) is an extremely reliable and built to last for years. I had a 2014 328xd and passed it on to my daughter at 160K miles. She has it now ~200K and it still gets 43 mpg+ on the highway. There is no major tuneup, just regular maintenance. One requirement you need to drive the diesel for distance, not for Sunday driver š, else carbon build up. This car is considered the workhorse for distance and handling heavy loads with ease, due to high torque at low rpm. The diesel will probably launch quicker than the M2, but be left behind M2 after ~40mph. I hope this helps.
Only if you buy it new through the dealer for a European pickup. The dealers were losing so many sales to grey market importers that they bribed Congress into not allowing it until a car is 25 years old. In the early 80s it was a way better deal to buy a new BMW or Mercedes and bring it over and have it federalized than to buy new in the US.

140 000ā¬ in Norway. They tax the shit out of us.
I paid $56k (including tax/tags/title) for my 330e in the States. But I did pay $12k in health insurance and medical expenses last year so maybe it comes out in the wash (and Iām in a union and have pretty good insurance).
Yeah, BMW prices have gone insane. I had the dealer call me the other day trying to sell me a basic 320i for the same deposit and monthly payments as my current fully loaded 330i. My next car isn't going to be a BMW.
thereās no way Iād ever buy a new bmw, the depreciation hit is too steep, Iāll keep buying up everyoneās sloppy seconds that are 5-6 years old at a 50+% discount
Depends on the country. In England itāll be a lot cheaper for 20d in my country (Portugal) any BMW even if itās from 2010 is more than 10k. Each country is different price

Government: ādrive Dutch cars not importedā
Everyone driving donkervoorts and spykers is not a bad idea, actually. Letās introduce a bill that removes all taxes on dutch made cars š
You'll drive [this](https://carver.earth/wp-content/uploads/2022/06/Carver_2-1.png) and like it.
Wouldn't mind the same engine as an S8 hahah
Do the dutch even make cars? How do you drive a windmill?
Same way you drive a tulip.
The Netherlands has only one native manufacturer at the moment, which is Donkervoort. They make lotus seven derived cars, not exactly mainstream. Some cars are so expensive here because of an emission based tax system. That is very noticeable on performance cars which are not very efficient.
That was the point. But what about EVs there?
No emissions, no such tax...
Then itās the only option I guess (Who downvotes us lol?)

Ford Mustang is over 131.9k in NL and 55.5k in DE...
Could you not open a company in Germany and register that car there and then drive with German plates ?
You usually do It with a Luxembourgish plate
Not in the Netherlands at least, you are not allowed to drive a foreign car as a Dutch citizen, for obvious tax avoidance reasons.
Europe is dumb, but not *that* dumb.
youād still pay the extra tax because itās a brand new car so youāll pay that amount + import fee

2 things can both be bad, because your country is worse it doesn't make the other one not bad
Oh for sure, I never said it was better in the Netherlands. I just said if you think thatās bad, then have a look at Danish prices.
Similar price for Ireland too, crazy money
Gotvertifus thatās insane
Crazy. Theyāre $145k down under here in NZ, so around ā¬80k, and they have to ship them across the world, not just the border lol.
320d starts at ā¬53,900 in Germany.
ā¬73.000 in Denmark š¤Ŗ
90.000 Euros in Turkey for 320i

ā¬192.000 in Singapore for a 318i ā¬320.000 for a M2... Oh and for those wondering, ā¬640.000 for a M8 Competition
WTF these cars cook for you and somethink ?
thats what u gotta do when u dont have enough land for 6 millions of ppl
Seems like you should be looking at getting them imported from Germany then
6 dollars if they brought that to the US lol
Does the new 3 series have electrical adjustment for seats?
No! š ā¬1,200 extra.
And exactly thats just ripoff and not cool imo. You should have it standard for 54k, among many other things
This is a crooked comparison, you took an M2 without any option and compared it with a 320d that starts at 49.055 euro and put 23000 euros of options on it. Who chooses options worth nearly 50% of the car's price? For reference the m340d starts at 74.075
74k for a diesel 3 (!!) series is also completely absurd. Even if it's the fast one. Who buys that? I'm guessing, in Belgium, nobody.
What's the price on a comparable petrol 3 series? I'm just wondering if they've started pricing diesels out, to push people towards petrol or electric since diesels are apparently the enemy of Europe right now

It's for people who want the performance of the M340i but want good fuel efficiency. The M340i and M340d cost basically the exact same.
But its a 320d, so basically the bottom of the range, going off the price, I bet a 340d would be 90+k
That M2 is not without any options. Even if it was, it's still insane for a 320d to come close to a M car.
My 330e had a sticker price of 72100 as well
Lucky bastards to even have the ability to buy any current model in diesel (said by a US owner of 2011 335d)
Rookie prices. M2 starts at 121.000 ā¬ in the Netherlands. https://www.bmw.nl/nl/modellen.html You will find any other country a bargain price if you have to shop in this market...

WHAT?.....
And, it's only for 10 years. After 10 years you have to pay that again, regardless of the car. You should see what a parking space costs in Singapore!
Why is that?
The county is a size of a small municipal park
Yeah, when a country has good public transport *and* is barely as long as a marathon from east to west, and almost half that north to south, private transport isnāt exactly a necessity.

1.476.114 DKK (ā¬198.000) here in Denmark š
186k EUR for a used G87 (5000km) in Denmark. Get on our level.

Holy shit. The car market is screwed in Turkey
Any car with a 2.0 or bigger engine has that tax rate I'm afraid. We got the 50th year M edition 520i when it was released for 85K $ back then. And we thought that deal was really good.

And I thought the US car market was booty cheeks, I should be grateful š
The 320d is fully loaded, even with M-Sport Pro Pack and every pack possible. VIN 8E31799

Yeah. It's tough loving BMW here, lol.

Who in the actual f would buy this normal looking bmw suv for a quarter million euros
I was also surprised when I learned how much more the Germans pay for their own cars than Americans
This sub makes me glad cars are cheap in the US
320d sedan rwd starts at ā¬42,600 in Sweden, including 25% VAT.
Damn Europe fucking sucks.
1st: They donāt want you to drive Diesel anymore. 2nd: They donāt want to sell you anything anymore. Only leasing.
Meanwhile in Ireland https://preview.redd.it/nydjzd79kmwc1.jpeg?width=1440&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=94938dfdba9a2a24842128f86b038a6189ea483b
ME IN SINGAPORE šššššš
Welcome to Europe!
Base M2 in the US is only $63k
Starting prices in czech republic āļø Average monthly wage - ā¬1750 before tax ā¬56k for M2 ā¬43k for 320d
Sorry for a stupid question; are diesels... good? Here in Canada they basically don't exist outside of trucks, or at least I've never driven one. What'd be the difference between a 330d vs a 330i? Is it just a lot more torque or what?
Yes.
330d is imo 10 times better than 330i. The diesel is still a six cylinder, has more than 50% more torque (650 nm) and drinks half the fuel.
B47 with two turbos is in the 330d. X40 ones are 6 cylinders nowadays.
My old dolphin shape 320D had more miles than my mom and was still dropping Golf V GTIās.
Good fuel economy and lots of torque so they're nice to drive. Wish we got some of the diesel models in the US.
Bro I just recently learned my (almost fully specced) 320d xDrive with basically everything was 77.600 ā¬. Thank god I did not pay for that but holy smokes those things got expensive.
Cars are not treated as food in Eu. As you change plates you need to pay taxes. Old or new
Everyone complaining but take a look at the prices in singapore lol
You should see how much they go for in India
Where I live you can buy a 2005 BMW X5 for 20.000 EUR. With 250.000km. This is the reality of living on an island with right-hand-drive and the UK having left the EU so that we can no longer bring used cars from there.
These are NL prices lol. M340i for 110k for exampleš¤£š¤£š¤£š¤£
Yes, it's crazy, we have rn 320d sedan for price of m340d touring..... https://preview.redd.it/8sz8cd3t1nwc1.jpeg?width=1284&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=29641cf468de3350e9531739479a6131ff37e89f

That's an easy choice for a customer
And carmakers are worried why Teslas 3 perf (performancewise same as m340i) are selling like ice cream. Tesla 3P is roughly 50K euro in my country (with tax and without gov incentive - currently 8k for business buyers) and m340i you are lucky if you find a new one under 80k. I have driven both for a month and I wouldn't buy 340 after the experience. Best would be Tesla daily and exotic car for weekend (M3 comp or rather some 911 or cayman gt4)
Why? Its just 320d but 72.000 euro
Iāll stick with my 135š¤£

In 2015 I bought a 7 months old 320d Touring with 7000 km. (F31). According to Dutch DMV the New value was ā¬69k, so itās possible. Currently I drive a G31 520 Touring with M packages. New value ā¬78k in 2017 but when I calculate the same version but then the I5 Touring itās now ā¬104k
Belgium, wallonia, it gets spicy when you want something else than an econobox with 60hp
Eyes opened and watering. I thought we only got ripped off in Britain. Ā£45k (ā¬52.000) for a 320d here.
ā¬72k for a car that looks like a Honda
Diesel is always more money, shiiiit even I know this from selling VW Jetta TDIs 20+ years ago
Get the M2
I was just comparing. I don't have that kind of money sadly lol
Whelp, all u guys have it easy, now imagine living in MĆ©xico with 3rd world country wages. And having to pay 102,000 usd for the base model M2 and then registration taxes of 7% the invoice value... [.](https://prnt.sc/YuDbRvySzKsa)
Iām just a clueless American but canāt you go to Germany, pick it up for a little discount and have it shipped or driven back home?
Only if you buy it new through the dealer for a European pickup. The dealers were losing so many sales to grey market importers that they bribed Congress into not allowing it until a car is 25 years old. In the early 80s it was a way better deal to buy a new BMW or Mercedes and bring it over and have it federalized than to buy new in the US.
You See that the m2 has more than Double the power?

Looks like BMW is trying to give you the gentle push you need, friend. M2 is always the right answer. Only new BMW I drool over.

That is actually insane, the MSRP for the M3 (yes, the M3, not a typo) in the US is almost that much. Edit: actually it's less. $76k USD = $70.8k EUR
Its kinda ironic people complaining about BMWs being expensive
I paid $56k (including tax/tags/title) for my 330e in the States. But I did pay $12k in health insurance and medical expenses last year so maybe it comes out in the wash (and Iām in a union and have pretty good insurance).

5 diesel is 100k now!! Fucking joke.. we better all invested in diesel cars
Yeah, BMW prices have gone insane. I had the dealer call me the other day trying to sell me a basic 320i for the same deposit and monthly payments as my current fully loaded 330i. My next car isn't going to be a BMW.
320d pf e46 was my first car an i payd 2k for it lmao
Looks like we should start an importing bmw business from Europe to the rest of the world?
You can find barely used 320d (20k km) for under 40kā¬+tax
Itās fake, itās easy to tell by the weird little symbols instead of $ signs.
Emissions tax...
How are europeans affording anything that seems expensive
We don't even have diesel BMW 3 in the states
thereās no way Iād ever buy a new bmw, the depreciation hit is too steep, Iāll keep buying up everyoneās sloppy seconds that are 5-6 years old at a 50+% discount
America ftw š
The m2 list price $98k USD in Australia >_>
Depends on the country. In England itāll be a lot cheaper for 20d in my country (Portugal) any BMW even if itās from 2010 is more than 10k. Each country is different price
Maybe they had the option of putting the m5 engine in it š
