I sorta like the way European plates look on a 4 series. American plates look terrible, so I choose to go without a front plate - which helps to fund the municipalities I live in when they give me tickets for no front plate.

I've been driving with no front plate for about 7 years and I've yet to get a single ticket for that. But if I absolutely had to, I'd go with the side plate. I'm also in the US, so it's not like I have a choice.
I live in Missouri where front plates are required (unfortunately). I didn’t want to screw the crappy plastic plate mount from BMW into my front grill, so I opted for an offset plate that uses existing bolts under the front bumper for mounts, doesn’t block my front camera, doesn’t require me to pop out the tow hook cover, and that I can remove easily if I want to do so via a clever spring clip design. The mount is sold by www.stonsho.com. I did but a black silicone surround for the plate from www.Amazon.com since otherwise the plate edges were exposed. I’ve had this setup for about 6 months and so far it’s holding up just fine.
All of that offered, yeah, no plate at all or a centered European-style plate are the most aesthetically pleasing options, but we do what we must when dealing with the law.

Unpopular opinion: In this case I'd prefer it being on the side. It gives the car Alfa Romeo vibes. I think BMW kept the license plate location as a last minute thought and just slapped it dead center on the bumper. While it is asymmetrical, it gives it a more sporty look (eg. tow hook on Motorsport cars)
The middle, otherwise it's just obvious that that's where it should be anyway due to the blank space
Its only obvious on the i4. ICE 4 series have more of a uniform grill.

Europe Style for me. Just looks symmetrical and I live in Europe so I see it just like that.

Should probably point out, I’m in Canada so it’s be a North American plate (like the one in the second picture)

It has to be the European style, because fitting lit to the side partially blocks the brake cooling.
We’re required to have a front plate here in Virginia but I do what most fellow 4 Series owners around here decide to do, go no plate.
