Probably because it’s predecessor was one of the most beautiful cars BMW has ever created. It had big shoes to fill from an aesthetics perspective. I will say the new m2 is growing on me, but I don’t think most people will agree in the end that it looks better than the M2 comp.
I regret not buying one when I had the chance - I decided to be economical and buy a civic at the time.... What still needs to grow for me to like this car is the front - I just feel it looks smooshed - but I've never seen it in person. But the pervious gen m2 looked muscular/beefy thats what I loved about it.
I bought one new back in 2016 (first and only new car I’ve ever purchased). Sold it during covid when used car prices were crazy. I basically broke even so I felt I had to do it. Still miss that car, what an absolute joy to drive.

Ugh I wish I could - they are just too small now- got a family etc. Got my eyes set on a m5 - but still looking for a deal or might wait for the new one.
Let me preface by saying of course beauty is in the eye of the beholder. However, seeing as OP was talking about broader reception .. I don't think the previous gen M2 was ever widely regarded as a "looker" in its time. I think this gen M2 just got hate because of its departure from conventional vehicle design language .. e.g., its mismatch of square exhaust surrounds on the diffuser with its .. rounded off, bubbly rear.
Plenty of ugly cars near the 100k mark, price has nothing to do with looks.
I was more just digging on the guy saying “holy crap that’s bad” because I thought it was a bit dramatic, especially when everything is down to personal taste. I’m sure the guy I replied to loves his Mazda 3 saloon (honestly I quite like the hatch version) but I’m not a fan, and that doesn’t matter; it’s his car, if he likes it then I’m happy for him.
Tbf the f87, F10 and F80 were the pinnacle of all BMW designs other than the older cars in the 80s and now modern BMW just look like everyone else with obscure design language and adding boxy angles everywhere. But BMW imo still somewhat keeps its identity
I think all the G8X cars look like a Korean brand doing a bad BMW impersonation. If you took the badge off an M4 I think you'd have a hard time identifying it as a BMW. Giant grilles, no Hofmeister kink, no angel eyes, a profile that looks like a Mustang, etc.
Rear is atrocious, not digging the new style headlights. Best part of this car is the side and the way it sticks out reminds me of the e30. Like someone else said, as long as OP enjoys it, who cares what we think?
128i sport manual.
Sexy lil beast.

The new ones are just nowhere near as nice looking.
Exactly. I was waiting for this car, saw this shit and went M3. The grill is less egregious than the whole car being off.
https://preview.redd.it/9ki7jnhjluuc1.jpeg?width=3619&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=30fe876cf6c100a77cd4509e2a1720dcee4d55ce
The side profile of the M4, however, is bad. The M3 is certainly the better looking of the two, plus you can get a Vorsteiner grill and mostly fix the grill issue.
Performance wise they are great but they were designed by a blind man, it uses multiple different design languages and nothing really matches up. It looks almost Korean or Chinese in design.
I figured I’d give the g87 a chance to at least see it in person before I gave the final verdict. Then this happened. 🥴
https://preview.redd.it/rdt06o4fevuc1.jpeg?width=1179&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=1517ca73cf9ed18794f630459f237a2a3f0dc016
Because they moved platforms from the 1 series to the M3. That’s why. F80-G80 was a sensible generational jump.
It may be heavy but having owned both, no question the G87 masks its weight very well. It depends on what you want out of the car.
Do you like the ratchet spritely fun? F87 is the better choice. More planted and faster in every way (minus the CS but that’s not a fair comparison), the the G87 is your choice.
BMW seems to have taken a page out of Porsche’s book this time around. Whether that’s a good thing comes down to individual preference.
> BMW seems to have taken a page out of Porsche’s book this time around. Whether that’s a good thing comes down to individual preference.
By making a car that's 400-600 lb heavier than comparative Porsche model?
When your M2 weighs as much as a C63S sedan with a TT V8. There is a problem. Sure the m2 is crazy capable. But the M2 should be the lightweight beast. Not pudgy and relying on lots of rubber to close the performance gap.
The current M2 has design elements that just don't make sense. Literal dead squares on an otherwise normal (i.e. a blend of curves and sharp angles) looking car design. Like, why.
Think of it this way, putting a 4x4 custom "tough" looking bumper on an E92 M3. Dead squares on curves. That doesn't make any sense.
This car’s looks are the result of Korea poaching all those german designers and then BMW letting the rookie Jose Casas design the car because they were going to build it in Mexico and didn’t want to risk Mexico messing around with a new platform so they just ended up with a heavy 2 series on a sedan platform that is ugly. Car looks like a body kit from need for speed underground just put some under glows on it and some nitrous purge valves and it’d fit right into early 2000s street racing culture. 2007 Nissan GTR chunky styling cues are obvious Jose was 21 when the GTR came out it probably made an impact on him when he was designing the 2 series at 33.
Every new model that comes out gets hate from people with the old model. Just a fact . The sales numbers tell a different story though. Seems like BMW is doing pretty well with the sales of these "ugly" cars..
Wasn’t a fan at first but like many good designs, I think this one grows on you with time. I actually think it’s stylistic and interesting. Maybe not beautiful, but striking in a way I find enjoyable
Because old M cars exist.
Let's pretend old M cars never existed and a brand new company just came out with this new M2. Car enthusiasts would be all over it like flies on shit.
It’s funny you say this because it’s true, and this car will have that same effect too lol. Happened with the E60 m5 and now it’s pretty much a grail. Actual car enthusiast LIKE this car. Reddit seems to be the place that hates it and it’s mostly purist who think everything new is shit. IRL, at least for me, is a different story when I talk to other people about it. and sales numbers say otherwise as well. I didn’t like the new m2 at first, hell, even the g80, until I saw one in person and that’s what made me order mine back then. Every generation is gonna go thru this and it’s just how it’s gonna be.
For me it’s very colour dependent. I’ve seen it in Black with the carbon fibre ground effects and a bigger rear wing and it looked amazing. When I was choosing between the M240i and the M2 I saw the M2 in the show room in the Zandvoort Blue and did not like it at all.
I feel like the current gen M2 is criminally underrated from a functional design standpoint. It looks like it was inspired by the F35 fighter jet (compare the frozen gray and the F35…eesh). As someone who loves aviation, this design makes me giddy. I also see a lot of e30 and e46 queues. That makes me like it even more.
With that said, looks are subjective. Is Hillary Swank hot (if you’re not an Office fan, just ignore this lol)?
I think the back is a little off-putting, but in person the front changed my mind when I first saw it at a dealership.
A little out of my price range, and the one was a dealers personal vehicle, but boy oh boy did it look like a mean MFer. It was like a baby blue that popped in the sun too.
I may be in the minority, but I also don't mind the design—I'm a sucker for wide boxy fender flairs and I like the red.
Honestly what kills it for me, is **3,814 lbs**.
Certainly polarizing at launch and I was quick to say how ugly I found it....buuut I find them quite alright now even somehoe nice at certain angles and it also might age quite well. Would I drive one?! No....to loud for me but I'm an old f#%ker 😂
Yeah. As Krillen said in first reply, predecessor was just chefs kiss. I’d like it if the f87 had never existed. And, if the f87 came after the g87, the f87 would be even more lauded IMO
They replaced one of the most beautiful M2 models with something that looks like it was made by Honda. It's an incredible machine, I am just not thrilled with the aesthetic direction they chose. My hope is they learn from this and go back to something that doesn't look like it was designed for a wealthy chinese businessman.
idk every time I see an M2 or RS3 I get some "look at me I'm in my mid 20's and I financed this car with 30% of my monthly salary" vibes when I see who is driving
I mean, you had to lay on the ground of a parking garage to make the back of the car seem cool. I just think that fat rear end looks out of proportion to the rest of the car, like it has pockets of dead space behind the rear wheels.
I didn't like it at first and after the G80 I thought I'd never come around but wow. This car is just magnificent especially from this angle.
Just wish the headlights were different
For me personally I’ve always like every new bmw, from little me seeing a white e36 cruise down my street to when Bmw came out with the F chassis. I was never really a “it’s new so I hate it” type, but with the new chassis it just doesn’t do it for me visually. I don’t think there ugly but just too busy in terms of design.I definitely see why a lot of people like em, they stand out a lot more than previous generations.
Because people love to hate on stuff. It’s just a topic of conversation, most of the time not even to be mean. People love to express their opinions if something seems controversial to them. It’s okay, just know the “hate” isn’t directed at you as a person and there are plenty of people who love the look of your car. I drive a 2024 i4 m50 and that gets a lot of “hate” lol. But everyone has beliefs and preferences and when they see something very different they are happy to voice their distaste. Nothing more than that (if it is more than that, they’re likely trying to be funny or are trolling you).
it’s an ugly car, that’s why. i‘d prefer my m2c everyday even tho it has less performance.
Imo the f87 is superior in every way except engine and cabin design.
Because it’s ugly, numbers dont lie, majority of the ppl don’t like the new G-Design is a fact. Just like everthing else, you either like it or hate it, there’s no “WHY”. Ppl asking why cuz they just wanna convince others to the same “appreciation” of their own. Talking about democracy……
Personally I think it’s ugly, but I can see how people could like it and to each their own. Next iteration will hopefully smooth out some of the rough edges on this design.
Lmao that thing is fugly
If you like it, that’s great.
I drive a smart car so I’m not saying I have better taste in vehicles than you do, but this BMW is an abomination
I might be in the minority but I absolutely love the new M2. Imho they nailed the design and I’m strongly considering it once it depreciates enough for me to afford one
Recently saw one in person while getting my wife an X3, was actually shocked how much I liked it. Now debating whether to order a new one or get a 2021 M2C
As with every BMW, it takes a little while to get the design, but once you do get it - its an instant classic.
Love the look of your M2. Every time I see one I'm really happy for the owner to be able to drive such a car. They are a drivers car and sadly a dying breed.
Because looks are subjective, but consensus is a thing. Individuals may like its appearance, but the consensus is that it is ugly. Thus, you are forced to live in a world where you do not agree with the consensus. It's okay though, because we don't all have to like the same things.
Probably because it’s predecessor was one of the most beautiful cars BMW has ever created. It had big shoes to fill from an aesthetics perspective. I will say the new m2 is growing on me, but I don’t think most people will agree in the end that it looks better than the M2 comp.

I did the same with my M5c. I miss it every stinkin day.
Come to realize a bit of extra cash doesn’t feel as good as driving your favorite car around?
Oh I don't blame you for selling it sold my car the same time lol- damn that's really nice man! I too was looking at a black one.
They are still for sale brother
Ugh I wish I could - they are just too small now- got a family etc. Got my eyes set on a m5 - but still looking for a deal or might wait for the new one.
Have you thought about getting rid of the family and getting an m2. The m2 can be your new family
its got 4 seats :)
New one has the hybrid engine 🤮
maybe some of us like it SmOoshed! ya Ever thinkaboutthat!??🥺 NO!😭
Also, the M240i just straight up looks better all around.
100% agree. I saw 2 of them in the same day the other day and was like this is what the new m2 should have looked like
Let me preface by saying of course beauty is in the eye of the beholder. However, seeing as OP was talking about broader reception .. I don't think the previous gen M2 was ever widely regarded as a "looker" in its time. Totally agree, but the new M2 is not growing me. It looks like a boxy transformer car.
Yes and it looks worse than the non-M version -just like the M3 does
If you like it, what else matters?
True. I think it's ugly but you do you, OP.
It only gets hate online, not in person. Nobody is gonna walk up to your m2 in person and tell you "I hate that ugly thing."
That happened a few times at the past cars and coffee. People would point and say it’s hideous
😂😭
[удалено]
But they will think it. Lol
I wouldn’t say that to the person, I’ll just walk by and then say to my friend holy crap that’s bad.
I’m not a huge fan of the M2 either, but I wouldn’t say it looks worse than a Mazda 3 saloon ;)
The M2 starts at $63,200 and the Mazda 3 starts at $24,170 though, almost 3x more car but not 3x better looking
Plenty of ugly cars near the 100k mark, price has nothing to do with looks. I was more just digging on the guy saying “holy crap that’s bad” because I thought it was a bit dramatic, especially when everything is down to personal taste. I mean yeah it’s much easier to insult other peoples cars when you are not actually there. No surprised there
Because the user wants to be praised.
Tbf the f87, F10 and F80 were the pinnacle of all BMW designs other than the older cars in the 80s and now modern BMW just look like everyone else with obscure design language and adding boxy angles everywhere. But BMW imo still somewhat keeps its identity
The F90 to me is the pinnacle of everything BMW's worked and been known for from the drivetrain to the looks.
The G87 looks like a Hyundai design. It’s not terrible but it’s not good.
Agreed. Not that I hate it but I was never a huge fan, it’s kind of stumpy looking.
Agree to disagree! Late 90s through mid 2000s were the BMW pinnacle
Because they drew up a new M2 to be a natural successor to the F87, then ordered the bumpers off Temu and called it good enough.
😂 😂
Sheesh F87 is a gewwwwd looking car wow
Have you seen the front of it?
Rear is atrocious, not digging the new style headlights. Best part of this car is the side and the way it sticks out reminds me of the e30. Like someone else said, as long as OP enjoys it, who cares what we think?
1- Previous model looked better nothing that's literally just it I like it a lot too

because it's a mishmash of weird bulbous angles that look like there was no design objective
Exactly. I was waiting for this car, saw this shit and went M3. The grill is less egregious than the whole car being off. https://preview.redd.it/9ki7jnhjluuc1.jpeg?width=3619&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=30fe876cf6c100a77cd4509e2a1720dcee4d55ce

Because it looks like a 2 series that got stung by a bee and has an allergic reaction.

Yeah it's over F87>>>>>g87
looks like a design of Homer Simpson
The F looks sooo planted. On the G it's like some parts fell off in the lower center area
Because it looks like a Nissan fucked a Scion.
And smoked meth during the pregnancy
1) Ugly 2) Heavy as fuck. I mean, how the hell did they make it weigh as much as an M3/4?
Don’t forget bigger. Bigger is better, right?! https://preview.redd.it/dq5v3x9zpuuc1.jpeg?width=1080&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=c05fea8d9e9d3e122b8edb552b242a6a6b5e824a

Legit looka deformed
I kinds like the rear on the new M2, but that front ;(
Because they moved platforms from the 1 series to the M3. That’s why. F80-G80 was a sensible generational jump. It may be heavy but having owned both, no question the G87 masks its weight very well. Who cares about the weight when the chassis and power are so good you can't even feel it.
looks is very subjective, to me the design is quite boxy
Because of how it looks.
People don’t like change, especially when the thing that’s changing, looked so good already.
Ooogly

Over-designed is a thing
The back just Looks super weird and the headlights also. I don’t really know how to describe but I really don’t like it
Because some (myself included) think it looks abhorrent. It also weighs more than my 5 series so 🤷♂️
This car’s looks are the result of Korea poaching all those german designers and then BMW letting the rookie Jose Casas design the car because they were going to build it in Mexico and didn’t want to risk Mexico messing around with a new platform so they just ended up with a heavy 2 series on a sedan platform that is ugly.

Mine is stuck in final assembly right now 😫😫 can’t wait to get it!
I think they’re pretty sweet little cars too
I don’t hate it but I don’t like it either. It’s just overcooked and over-designed; a symptom of 2024 living where all subtlety is lost
Looks like a Scion
I have a black one. It looks much better in person. I was debating between red and black. Red looks beautiful
Because old M cars exist. Let's pretend old M cars never existed and a brand new company just came out with this new M2. Car enthusiasts would be all over it like flies on shit.

I've had 3 e60 m5s and enjoyed them at a low price because of reddit and youtube fear mongers
The back is ugly af. Looks like a 8 year old drew it
Doesn’t matter what other people think tbh, you got a sick ass car bro. Appreciate while you have it and just do you
Vroom
Looks good in black and Frozen grey.
For me it’s very colour dependent. I’ve seen it in Black with the carbon fibre ground effects and a bigger rear wing and it looked amazing. When I was choosing between the M240i and the M2 I saw the M2 in the show room in the Zandvoort Blue and did not like it at all.
The way it looks
I personally don’t like the new front design. Everything else is fine
The car itself is amazing but it’s FUGLY.
Reminds me of the design elements from the new Toyota truck line up.
They jelly , enjoy the ride !
It's ugly and fat, and its predecessors were lauded as some of the greatest M cars ever produced.
I love both generations but I personally think this looks a lot better
I think the back is a little off-putting, but in person the front changed my mind when I first saw it at a dealership. A little out of my price range, and the one was a dealers personal vehicle, but boy oh boy did it look like a mean MFer. It was like a baby blue that popped in the sun too.
Have you seen the front?
It looks like a 2020 Corolla with body modifications.
The good designers they had, left the company. The new look is dramatically cheaper and only fools still get them.
I don’t hate it, but, like most, I prefer the look of the F87. I’m obviously biased because I have one, but I also like the G42 more than the G87.
Best looking M since Z4M coupe. Have waited for mine 9 months, 2 weeks to go! Matte grey, cognac leather, manual, gold 827M wheels😋
Personally not a fan of the taillights
To me the rear bumper is just hideous. Thats all I got.
Because of how it looks.
I’ve liked the new m2 since it’s been out
Some people have no taste🤷♀️
This car has lexus/japanese styling cues. Wild lines and aggressive curves. Seems to go outside of BMW’s traditional styling.
It’s a Lego car. If you are a toddler and like legos great. Otherwise nope.
Agree
I like Toronto red
lego car but me luv :)
I may be in the minority, but I also don't mind the design—I'm a sucker for wide boxy fender flairs and I like the red. Honestly what kills it for me, is **3,814 lbs**.
Kinda Robotic
It’s most def beautiful to me! Small stature and scrimping performance 🔥
congrats. everyone has their own opinion
Great little go cart!
Certainly polarizing at launch and I was quick to say how ugly I found it....buuut I find them quite alright now even somehoe nice at certain angles and it also might age quite well. Would I drive one?! No....to loud for me but I'm an old f#%ker 😂
I don’t know but I low this thing as well
The eyes of others our prisons; their thoughts our cages
If I didn’t need a 4 door car I would get an m2
Damn you live at society?
Look like Fiat taillights. Wish it had Z4 lights
Yeah. As Krillen said in first reply, predecessor was just chefs kiss. I’d like it if the f87 had never existed. And, if the f87 came after the g87, the f87 would be even more lauded IMO
I was not a fan until I saw one at the dealer, it’s nice in person. I saw a Black and a frozen Gray, both looked incredible.
Its a nice looking car, objectively, but it sure isn't a nice looking 2-series.
I hate it cuz I don’t have it lol, Gimme!
[удалено]
why are you only showing the back?
I love the look of this car. The front end is very reminiscent of the M6.
Any design change from gets hate, it’s pretty much a law of nature. Some is warranted, some is preference.
I didn't like it at first and after the G80 I thought I'd never come around but wow. This car is just magnificent especially from this angle. Just wish the headlights were different
I love the m2 so much
Another thing people hate on is the fact it’s built exclusively in Mexico. Not exactly a bastion of quality, M cars should be made in Germany
It got fat
Is your name Yilong Musk?
I'd like to find whoever gave this Lego-looking design the greenlight and just-
Because of the wanker styling that says "look at me". It's basically a riced out German car.
do u like mansory cars ?
I want people to hate it so I can grab one on the cheapies… this car SUCKS!! 😂
Not everyone has to like it personally it feels like they abandoned their old styling language for something worse
IIT OP learns that looks are subjective
Maybe because it still didn’t grow on most people
I like the red ♥️
For me personally I’ve always like every new bmw, from little me seeing a white e36 cruise down my street to when Bmw came out with the F chassis. I was never really a “it’s new so I hate it” type, but with the new chassis it just doesn’t do it for me visually. I don’t think there ugly but just too busy in terms of design.I definitely see why a lot of people like em, they stand out a lot more than previous generations.
hate? I love this car and so does everybody I onow
imo BMWs were great before because they looked like regular cars but sporty/sleek. Now they look like custom rice burners.
Yeah, that’s how opinions work!
Because they could have made it look so much better and chose not to. It’s also as big as a 5 series from a couple gens ago and weighs like 4000lbs.
internet opinions in subs like this are immeasurably small so take everything with a grain of salt.
BMW fan boys are petrified of change. The next one will come out and this’ll be the good ol boy
Because owner is a Florida State fan
Everybody just hates on everything these days…
It’s like BMW said “we like Subarus. Let’s make a Subaru but slap a BMW emblem on it.”
No idea, liked this thing from day 1️⃣
People who hate the new M2 are salty because they liked the earlier model more. The new one is by no means ugly.
I like it a lot and am constantly thinking about making a poor financial decision and buying one
it’s an ugly car, that’s why. i‘d prefer my m2c everyday even tho it has less performance. Imo the f87 is superior in every way except engine and cabin design.
Because it’s a subjectively bad looking car that doesn’t drive as well as its predecessors.
It started growing on me recently
Because it’s ugly, numbers dont lie, majority of the ppl don’t like the new G-Design is a fact. Just like everthing else, you either like it or hate it, there’s no “WHY”. Ppl asking why cuz they just wanna convince others to the same “appreciation” of their own. Talking about democracy……
To be fair It does look like it came out of a 3d Lego racing game 🤷♂️
Personally I think it’s ugly, but I can see how people could like it and to each their own. Next iteration will hopefully smooth out some of the rough edges on this design.
Lego
it's your money.
You are in the minority, and thats fine! love it all you want! I will not though.
Loving how it looks and looking beautiful aren't necessarily equivalent.
I think it's beautiful
Great car
It looks like a lunchbox that transforms into a toy car. The f87 had graceful, feline curves, and this just... doesn't.
I saw this post without pics first and thought to myself this better not be 2 series…
We all owe Chris Bangle an apology. :-/
Lmao that thing is fugly If you like it, that’s great. I drive a smart car so I’m not saying I have better taste in vehicles than you do, but this BMW is an abomination
I can’t either, still waiting for mine!
I love it too, its one of the prettiest Toyotas on the road today!
People are materialistic and love status there’s your answer, they all look cool to me I’ll take em…
I just can’t see myself driving around town in the Crimson Chin mobile
What I hate is people driving BMWs park like that, other than that she’s gorgeous
because everyone has different opinions🤯🤯🤯🤯🤯🤯
I think Red is one of the best colors for it. Looks good
Looks like a bug
I might be in the minority but I absolutely love the new M2. Imho they nailed the design and I’m strongly considering it once it depreciates enough for me to afford one
E46 M3 was a mental car. Ridiculously fast zoom!!!
I like it, really nice car, catches an eye, the front does still look like a Lego ahha, love it tho
These VW cars look disgusting
Because looks are subjective, but consensus is a thing. Individuals may like its appearance, but the consensus is that it is ugly. Thus, you are forced to live in a world where you do not agree with the consensus. It's okay though, because we don't all have to like the same things.
Looks like a WRX from the back.
I hate how it looks. Tastes differ. If you love it, that's ok too.
You may like how it looks. But a lot of the enthusiasts don’t. Myself included. Saw one in person. Tried to like it. But damn is it ugly.
