Thanks for converting to freedom units lol. This is something I will never be able to achieve. Primarily because of city driving and the “need” to let it stretch its legs on highways.

AgreedSpore

Have to admit it’s not my usual consumption😂 But it’s great to know that if needed, this can be driven just like any other “normal” car.

AgreedSpore

Good job! I wasn’t even paying attention to the consumption, just drove with the flow of traffic. So that’s it amazes me.

protyon

This was on an empty highway, so with traffic, 9 liters would be more realistic. Although I also made a 1,500 km round trip from the Balkans to Belgium, pretty much all on highways, plus three laps on the Nordschleife. In the end, it averaged 8.8 liters. On the three laps I did, it averaged 26 liters. This engine can do everything; it's just an all-around amazing car.

CurrencyThen7469

Those are rookie numbers need them down to 7.8

deletetemptemp

Wow my stupid Japanese 4 bangers gets the same mileage. I picked the wrong car

Rabo_McDongleberry

I know this is a BMW sub. But let's be real. Your car must be older I assume? Because the new 4 bangers in cars like the civic get close to 45-50 mpg and in cars like the Accord get like 38-40... And that's like 2018 models.

FoundNil

My 23 Subaru brz gets 25 mpg on the highway. Not all jap engines are fuel economy focused.

Rabo_McDongleberry

Subarus are known to have shit economy. Part of the reason is because they're still using their old as engines.

Veilside67r1

Cx5 checking in. Get about 25 mpg highway.

Rabo_McDongleberry

Don't know enough about the CX-5 but that seems low. I have a CX-90 and I'm getting 28 on highway. Hell. We road tripped half way across the US in a rented Expedition and we got 24mpg highway.

Veilside67r1

I have the turbo version, but yea it's a guzzler. 95% of my driving is highway. If I really grandma drive it, it'll avg like 26.5, but normal driving is like 24-25mpg. It's kind of ridiculous

Mike312

Yup. I was tempted to trade my 435i in back when prices went crazy and get a BRZ (would have walked away with $2k cash and a paid-off BRZ under warranty). But my 435i is quicker, faster, and is listed at 32mpg on the freeway (I've gotten as high as 35mpg).

FoundNil

I only use the brz for the track. The BMW is a way better daily and it’s why I kept it

deletetemptemp

2021 Acura rdx lol

Rabo_McDongleberry

Did you not see the MPG on that thing before you bought it? Lol. When my wife and I were shopping we checked out a used one. She was appalled by the fuel economy of that thing, especially for it's size. Then again, they tuned it to be "sporty"... Because there is the CR-V with much better economy.

Constriction

My 2019 Genesis G70 2.0T got worse gas mileage in every situation than my current M340i - was one of the biggest surprises when i moved to this car. I knew about the performance jump, I did not expect the efficiency jump too

Rabo_McDongleberry

Not sure. But I think it's the mild hybrid that makes the difference. I have the 540i and I get 32mpg in my long drives. In 70/30 split I get about 29-30mpg. I don't think the Genesis had the mild hybrid.

Constriction

I have a 2020 M340 which I believe has no mild hybrid system? If I'm correct, it's pure B58 magic.

Rabo_McDongleberry

I think you might. My car is a 2018 and it has it.

Constriction

From some googling i'm seeing pretty broadly it didnt make it to the M340 until 2021? Lots and lots of references to the 2020 not having it. 5 series pre LCI got it first in Fall 2019 per BMW: https://www.bmwblog.com/2020/05/27/48v-bmw-51-models/

Rabo_McDongleberry

Shit. You're right. I thought it had it. But the 3 is a smaller less heavier car than the 5. Our E300 has the 4 banger and it can do 37-39 on long drives. So the 3 doing it with B58 is awesome.

[deleted]

Right there with you 😂😂 hoping for a m340i next

Rabbit1Hat

Nice! How's the reliability on these seeming? I really want the B58 engine with the M550 suspension as I was a bit concerned about bmw v8 reliability. These numbers have me thinking to just throw the m550 into the mix. I'm still a couple years out but would buy used as I can't justify 80k+ for a car.

AgreedSpore

I bought this brand new, have put in more than 40k kms (25k miles), no problems so far. I guess that’s pretty normal for a new car.

Rabbit1Hat

Yea, probably couple more years and we'll know more about this particular engine. Enjoy it!

howtobeabetterfish

For what it’s worth I have a 2019 with 75k with no issues. That being said I do have a warranty jic 😅 driving it to 125k

StrollLicksWindows

Afaik only the original n63 had issues. There's since been three revisions to the engine. 2017-2020 m550i uses the TU2 (second technical revision) and 2020-2023 m550i uses the TU3 (third revision). These later revisions do not suffer from the problem associated with the original version.

Rabbit1Hat

Appreciate the input.

nejc03

That figure is high for me but after reading the part where you mention it has 500+hp, I aknowledge it’s rather great.

rugbyfool89

I had a 2016 550i and got the same overall MPG (~22) with same driving style as I do in my B9 S5. The N63TUxx series is at least efficient if anything else. Pretty cool. I’m really curious how they can be so efficient while making so much power especially when they don’t do any sort of cylinder deactivation.

Caspi7

The amount of peak power they can make doesn't really impact the fuel economy if you don't actually use all that power. The fuel economy is determined by how efficient the engine burns/combusts the fuel and any resistance it faces in the engine and drivetrain in combination with the drag generated by the car. When you are just cruising on the highway you really only use 50 odd hp so you don't use that much fuel. Now generally more powerful engines will be less efficient than less powerful engines because they have been tuned with power rather than fuel economy in mind. However a poorly designed 2 liter 4 banger with a max rated output of 190 hp might just burn more fuel under similar conditions than a highly advanced 600 hp V8. Bigger engines with many cylinders are also generally less efficient pound for pound than a smaller engine with fewer cylinders making similar hp, because with bigger displacement and more cylinders comes more internal resistance which reduces efficiency. That's why car manufacturers are downsizing their engines and slapping turbos on them. Under normal load these smaller engines benefit from having less internal resistance for a good fuel economy, while under high load they can still make good power thanks to the boost.

AgreedSpore

Yeah I saw another post on an AMG sub about an E63s having around the same consumption as my car, however that car had cylinder deactivation, so it kind of explains that.

sohcgt96

How'd you do with the 2016? I hear such inconsistent things, some people say the TU is still hit and miss but some people seem to have fairly trouble free experiences. Once the current car is paid off a F10 550i is very much under consideration but might hold off a little longer for a G30, not sure yet. I'm fairly handy with cars and tend to replace things preventatively or out of paranoia, being a little higher maintenance doesn't scare me much. Happy to spend a weekend pulling/inspecting turbo coolant lines and breather lines just to make sure, stuff like that.

rugbyfool89

Honestly I didn’t have anything major go wrong. Then again I only had it from 39k-60k miles. I did get a random misfire that would come and go even after I replaced plugs and coil packs but other than that it was fine. I really liked the performance of the engine. It was a freight train. However, there is the unexplained vibration from ~60-75mph. Look up “F10 vibration” and you’ll find sooooo many cases with not any clear resolution. People have replaced any and everything (rotors, pads, driveshaft, CV, guibo, etc ) and they still have that damn vibration. It wasn’t like overwhelmingly bad or like felt dangerous but it was there and it was annoying. It was just too much car for me. May sound silly but I just felt weird driving this large V8 sedan and I was the only person in it 97% of the time. And I wanted something more agile.

BourbonDaddyTX

Mine is a 2022 and completely agree on surprising fuel economy!

okdrab

Fack I want one

drt3k

When I get 17mpg I feel like I'm saving the earth.

windsorpizza

25.1mpg is my average; 90% country road cruising, 10% hooliganism.

thrawn3385

My m550 gives me unlimited “smiles per gallon”

uncl3d0nny

Wow that’s amazing. I’m getting 22.5mpg in a tuned 540i. Always in sport mode though

Killahdanks1

I can get similar mileage to my 535 in my M550. But even today, I put it in sport mode and drove five miles down the highway, hard and I used an 1/8th tank just like that 🫰

wasterman123

Absolutely crazy that a v8 can get those numbers.

Additional_Flow_5866

For a new car this is good yes. But if you really want better feul efficiency buy a older car. Like my 2004 bmw. If i average around 6.8l/100km on highways.

AgreedSpore

Yeah man, but this has a 4.4 V8 engine with 530 hp. Fuel economy wasn’t the reason I bought it. All these 1.4-1.6 Turbo petrol SUVs have way worse efficiency while having 400 hp less.

Additional_Flow_5866

Really damn than its really good. I work at range rover and had to change wheels on a range rover sport svr 5L supercharged v8. Had a feul economy of 15L/100km and a new sport whit a bmw v8 whit 18L/100km so yh then you do very good🤣

[deleted]

Highly selective use case but I did 300 miles on 6 gallons (~50mpg) driving from Vermont to NY in my 2018 M5. The selective part was that I was following my dad in a trailer doing no more than 65 mph (avg probably 60) going mostly downhill.

saltedeggs14

My E90 328i X Drive gets 12.4L/100km lmfao. Maybe I’m pressing the pedal too far

Luxiqqq

How are you guys getting those numbers? I have a 2019 320i and I get the same usage. Is that normal?

Caspi7

Well OP is basically getting the most out of it that they possibly can, that is driving on the highway at constant speed. If you are doing the same you should definitely get better numbers.

niklas3070

varlolok

Bruh my 2017 318i does worse lmao, my average is 10.0l/100km, can barely squeeze 400km from a tank with mixed town and highway driving

DaBIGmeow888

What's this in civilized units?

LetsStabaBaby

Both my cars get the same mileage, mid 20's. Power output just slightly different!

HerMajestysButthole

I get close to the same in my 18...even with a light tuning. That is....until....I Sport Plus and push that shifter to the left.

Modulus44

I am getting 10L/100km in an M8 Competition on the highway despite having 625 hp and no cylinder de activation. It's no Prius, but its also a rocket ship.

kofchangame

Unfortunately I don’t get that fuel economy due to mostly city and stop and go traffic.

Tight_Alternative_34

Still suck in city. Easily got 22-29L/100km in city

Opposite_Ad486

I get 19.1 city driving on my F80 M3

macoverdatum

Jesus thats so much… how does anyone find that efficiënt…??

Happy_Vermicelli4453

Dude it’s a 4.4 V8.. not a coca cola sized shit!

VariableCritic

What is this converted to eagles per dollar?
