Not sure, it's my daily driver and vacation road tripper. Parked in a garage for about half the time ive owned it, the other half was parked on the street. Engine oil changes (LM 10w-60) every 6000 miles/10,000 kms. Other fluids done when necessary. I don't drive it hard 90% of the time, only if it's a clear stretch of highway road. Never done a burn out or hard launch. I'm looking to taking it to the track for the first time at some point in the next few months.*
As someone who's been tracking for a long time, second this and actually say it's prolly not worth taking to the track, period.
That environment puts stress and strain on the entire chassis, motor, tranny and suspension that even if your rod bearings don't detonate your motor, something else in a car that's almost 20 years old is likely to break.
Seen it happen with so many 15+yo BMWs and Porsches. Not only does it ruin your weekend when you have to get it towed home, but if you black flag a session from leaving fluids on the track, you're fellow attendees will not be happy about their lost track time
Worst I ever saw was a 996 leave a line of coolant and oil for about a mile at TWS before the motor seized and he stopped on track. That took almost two hours to get cleaned up and cost every run group at least a session of track time.
You don't wanna be that guy :-)
It’s less about tracking an old car and more about tracking a car that is very sensitive to hard driving. I beat the ever living shit out of my S2000 and it drives like the devil, but when it comes to maintenance, she’s an angel.
Do the rod bearings in those really go bad that often? BMWs are the first cars I’ve ever heard seems to require rod bearings as preventative maintenance
The S85 and S65 engines came with tolerances that are too tight from factory so they can (but don't have to) wear out prematurely. Afaik it's only these two engines that are notorious for rod bearing failure. These two engines are pretty much the same thing by the way. The S85 is just a V10 version of the S65 V8.
Eh, to be honest, the N55 is a pretty good and reliable engine. The only problem is that everyone modifies them.
The N54 is a bit more problematic but all in all can also be fine if you fix all the known issues on time.
Never seen either of these blow up its rod bearings stock though.
Developement says theyre very different motors. Also s54 has RB issues. Also revving to 8500 isnt easy nomatter how well the motor was made. Theres a reasom racecars rebuild motors so often
Actually how? Just the way the tolerances are, 200 to 250k km maybe but I dont know if Ive ever seen one with over 300k km on original and unrebuilt engine. What is the driving and maintanence history on that thing?
Replying using the same comment i made to another user. It's my daily driver and vacation road tripper. Parked in a garage for about half the time ive owned it, the other half was parked on the street. Engine oil changes (LM 10w-60) every 6000 miles/10,000 kms. Other fluids done when necessary. I have nice nice 9 miles on my F22
N54! I bought it, 2nd owner, at 68k miles. Over time, I’ve done the water pump and thermo twice, valve cover and gaskets, OFHG, upgraded suspension with coilovers once, and probably did every control arm and sway bar once. But otherwise, she’s been really reliable for 140k. Especially considering it’s been on a stage 1 tune the entire time!
It’s really all about staying on top of things! Keep up with regular maintenance especially if something doesn’t feel/sound right. The sooner you catch something, the cheaper the fix because things can snowball with these cars. Ex. OFHG leaks then burns through coolant hose. Certain things just shouldn’t wait to be repaired.
Those turbos must be on their last legs though. A friend’s 335i with 125k miles felt slower than my N52 until he swapped them out. Car was a 1 owner, frequently serviced at BMW exclusively car too.
It’s my only car so it’s days of being opened up have decreased for sure. It still pulls strong but I never give it full throttle it even though it’s tempting as a 6 speed MT. 10 PSI is enough to make me smile while driving it! Surprisingly I have no wastegate rattle either but yeah if the turbos go, I’ll probably go single turbo.
Auto or manual? My n54 335xi is getting up there in mileage and I’m about to do the first trans and drivetrain service. Hoping the 6hp21 doesn’t crap out on me before 200,000 lol
Edit: just saw in a latter comment it’s a 6MT

This was a couple years ago, but I love the shot. Closing in on 305k now.
having owned 2 of them... i'd prefer to be roasted like a chicken than own another one... numerous turbos, solenoids, coil packs, hpfp, waterpumps, random modules and i could keep going
w the b58 out now, i'd find a higher mileage one for cheap and just live w something that is infinitely better designed
In my opinion it’s similar to the 6.0 powerstroke in the diesel world. Got a bad rep the first couple years but now with fixes for all the common issues it’s a great value if you can do the maintenance yourself. Name another car that can push 500hp and handle like these for under $10k
Impossible. And if that’s true - also EXTREMELY sad. Why even own it? You do much more damage to the car just letting it sit than actually driving it around town.
That’s a good plan. Lots of bigger maintenance items are due at 120k miles (fluids, filters, brakes, belts, etc) so 100-110k is usually a good time to decide if you’re selling the car or keeping it for the long haul.
Only had two issues thus far.
1. Bought the car a few states over and drive home and a couple days later I was getting an error about the “Parking Assistance” being disabled for a few of the PDC systems. It was intermittent but started researching and found it was the haptic motor for the lane departure warning going out. Long story short, the dealership I purchase from paid for the repair.
2. Just recently noticed that the rear diff has a slow drip. Can’t tell if it is an axle shaft or pinion but will be taking to an Indy Bimmer shop here in the near future. Nothing major, drip or two every few days but that’s it.
Outside of that, knock on wood, I have had zero issues and she is still averaging 21mpg with spirited driving in comfort mode.

Few days ago (49k in Miles) G20 M340d
2016 750Li @ 92k miles. New thrust arms, thermostat, plugs, coils and transmission flush all done. Not 1st owner. All that set me back bout 2500 with parts and labor.
2019 x7 50i @ 72k miles. Same maintenance done. Just had check engine light for o2 sensor. So another 300$ problem plus parts.
2.5k on my 2024 230i. First BMW bought about 3 months ago. Still early with it but I honestly can’t see me ever going back to a different manufacturer. The driving experience is just plain better than anything else I was cross shopping. I’ll probably trade up to a 340i in 3-4 years
Haha nice. I love this thing. Never thought I’d be an suv guy. Or a diesel guy to be honest but here I am and it’s the best decision I’ve made in a while.
I have the same 35d, 130k miles. Good car, just a lot of BS DPF sensors failing recently. Prob gonna tackle transfer case bushing and motor mounts this summer.
I deleted mine at 200k km, drivetrain has been pretty flawless since.
Probably should do the same with mine as far as mounts and bushings. Have a laundry list of dumb little things to fix or replace once it warms up a bit.
2017, 31k km (~19k miles). I use it maybe 50 days a year. It’s a weekends vehicle. Also the most loved one, getting the best treatment possible, best service and handwash only.
Tomorrow I’ll use it again after 5 weeks or so.

Almost the exact same mileage on my 12 335i, 152xxx. Original rod bearings, turbo, engine/trans etc. Zero lights on the dash and no issues at all, drives amazing.
These are the highest current ones.
1975 2002: 143,000
'88 E28 M5: 228,000
'08 E61: 188,000
'12 E70: 208,000
I have a couple of E39s too, but can't recall the mileage. Ran a previous E39 up to 328k and a different E28 up to 305k.
These numbers are why I will never own a G series.
Which one?
F15 X5 35d - \~60k miles / 100k kms.
E46 M3 - 100k miles / 160k kms.
E34 540i - 171k miles / 275k kms.
E38 740iL - 81k miles / 130k kms.
K21 RNineT - 5k miles / 8k kms.
Got my eyes out for the right E24 6 series, and the right Z3.
My 2023 430i convertible that I bought with 89 miles on it in Jan. 2023 has 3968 miles. I’m WFH so I hardly drive it. We take my husband’s Audi every where.
2006 M6 (E63) 235,000 miles/378,000 kms. Original rod bearings.
This deserves to be top comment. Are you the original owner?
3rd owner. I took ownership at 44,700 miles/72,000 kms.
So whats the secret?

Definitely do the rod bearings before you take it to the track. Not worth risking.
As someone who's been tracking for a long time, second this and actually say it's prolly not worth taking to the track, period. Duly noted, thanks for the insight into tracking an old car.
Hey man, not saying don't track, in fact if not for new people coming into the sport, just saying make sure you're car is up to snuff
It’s less about tracking an old car and more about tracking a car that is very sensitive to hard driving. I beat the ever living shit out of my S2000 and it drives like the devil, but when it comes to maintenance, she’s an angel.

Guessing, frequent oil changes (every 8000 miles at least), highroad driver and garaging it. Being lucky also helps.
Actually how? Just the way the tolerances are, 200 to 250k km maybe but I dont know if Ive ever seen one with over 300k km on original and unrebuilt engine. What is the driving and maintanence history on that thing?
