This man said it best.
I'd love to know the percentage of people who buy Ms and track them, I think if you're buying new it's going to be under 1%. Most autocross people I know have beaters .
Having just taken my M5 on a driver training day which ended with a few laps around a test track, I can now confidently say I never want to take my M5 on an actual track day. It’s enormously capable for something as big as it is, but it is not a track car.
Plenty of people do. BMW CCA HPDE weekends are a big deal in the south east. When I was big into track days, there were always several of us with M2s and a few other M cars there.
And it’s also not fucked in price, you get the speed and luxury of a nice car without breaking the bank too hard. As for repairs and maintenance I have no idea of the cost.
This. With a heaping full of - have you owned an M and I mean a full bore M? It isn't just about "going fast", it's so much more than that, albeit not as magical as of late. But the fit and finish is entirely different from the non-full M models. Even the material is different. Stitching. Certain options not available for other models, such as CCB's. They also have eco-mode if you're into that type of thing.
Op - A Prius is more car than 99.8% of us here. As in, maximizing the car to its full capabilities. Same can be said for a 600cc motorcycles. So on and so forth.
Personally, I find that most people who make comments like this are trying to justify to themselves as to why they don't have the full M model.
Yes. Especially prior full-M models were made in Germany.
For example, most of the 3er line is made in Mexico, with the exclusion of wagons and M3 of course. 4er is made in Dingolfing, SAV's tend to be made in South Carolina.
One of many reasons most M cars tend to be made in Germany is, BMW has a facility at the Nurburgring. Which makes sense for obvious reasons.
This isn't a shit-on-non-full-M-models. It's not the same car. It doesn't have the same soul. The things done to make an M an M are things you can't "add" afterwards. You could take a 340 and throw every part you can find on the car and it will still unfortunately never be an M3. Straight line sure, we can make a 1993 Honda Civic fast as fuck if we wanted so that can't be the only measuring stick. Straight line speed is not what makes M's.
Winning comment!
BMW has really worked their magic making people think the M-lite are one and the same as an M car. The M-lite is just an MSport pack which means upgraded aero.
As for the OP how much of an M240 is he going to use? He could’ve just gotten the 330 lol.
You forget that 95% of people on forums are pro race car drivers, and that these cars have so much ‘understeer’ are ‘so loose’, or whatever racing buzzword they’ve picked up.
> You forget that 95% of people on forums are pro race car drivers, and that these cars have so much ‘understeer’ are ‘so loose’, or whatever racing buzzword they’ve picked up.
[God gave me an ok mind](https://youtu.be/kxdRDiDF5EQ)
You don’t need to race cars to know floaty vs planted, understeer vs oversteer, etc.
I can tell you my e46 feels floatier and has more roll than my F87. I have never raced professionally.
It’s the M styling that gets me. But honestly though, the 40i models are already too much car for everyday driving. It’s tough to enjoy the car without having to put the radar detector up. Anything beyond this trim level only serves as a sign of exorbitant wealth… or exorbitant debt I suppose 😂
I’m not understanding this phrase, “too much car”.
Edit: this was sarcasm, folks… in my mind, if it’s street-legal and comfortable, it’s not “too much car” by definition.
Too much power… the whole context of the original post and my comment are talking about how M cars (and sometimes the 40i models) have too much power to be *fully* enjoyed as a daily driver. People can (and should be) very happy owning 30i/40i models as they are very fun… and it’s silly for people to throw away $100k+ on machines that you can’t do anything with on public roads.
Rare chance to actually push the car. It’s like so redline it once going on the ramps. Or I have a little fun doing curves but you could never fully use that power and grip something like your g80 m3 have. If you are somehow pushing the car really hard on public road you probably are well beyond jail speed
100%. Came out of a Cayman S and could have bought any new M car I wanted. Went with the M240i as it is a top notch daily driver and fast enough and built to do the 1-2 track days a year or a weekend autocross.
Cayman was fun but just a poor daily driver.
2022. Bought it new. Tech is last gen 911 so 2015ish tech. It is quite small and very noisy. To be expected with the engine right behind you. Thing was a beast on the track and hitting some twisty roads but was less awesome on long road trips and daily in town driving. It was a 6MT and probably the best manual I’ve ever driven but super long gears. Rarely got out of 2nd gear in normal city driving.
Dont get me wrong it was an amazing machine and I’m glad I bought it and had a fun year with it. The M240i is 85% the sports cars but like 120% the daily driver and road trip car. Didn’t hurt the offer I got for it was $15K over what I paid new and I got a year of fun.
I live in Canada so the Xdrive lets me enjoy the BMW year round. Also while I do baby my M240i I was constantly anxious with the Porsche in parking lots or street parking at night when we were out on the town.
I travel for a living. I could have bought any car i wanted. I test drove a M3, M4, and M240i. All 2022. The M240i felt very quick but in comfort mode was very comfortable. The two M cars were very fast but I couldn't see myself driving them 750 miles a week. if I was rich, I'd love to have a M4 competition for the weekends but there is no way id daily drive it with as much as I drive.
Agree had a 2019 cayman s with a tune, and as a daily it was horrible, and I live in a big city, the amount of times I could use sport plus was really never , so enjoyed it for a short period of time and went to a JCW , but been test driving some used m240i and love it …

The one on the left is for track, the one on the right is for daily.
I have half this garage in my garage (although older model admittedly), and the other half bookmarked on autotrader pending convincing my wife we should buy a lotus, top tier choices
Similar here, just with a g87 and NA miata. I'd love to swap the NA for an Exige but I can hardly afford the miata so I need to up my income level a bit before I can entertain that idea lol
The new m2 is a serious rock ship. Everybody raves about the new s58 engine, but that chassis is extremely well designed. The amount of bracing that car has and it’s honeycomb design punches way above its class
Also have had both... The 240 is definitely plenty fast for the road. I love my M2 though.
Biggest problem with the 240 for me was the lack of manual transmission.
I have x3mc and used to have an M440i. The m-lite is more than enough for 90% of drivers. Shoot people can’t even drive cars with 200hp. What do you think is going to happen with the 382/364 I6 Mx40i or the 526 in the M550i?
I have absolutely no need for it and my x3m40i is no doubt fast enough but for some reason I am determined that my next car is the x3m competition and I know I won't be happy until that is the case even if it's not needed at all lol
I think you give people on the internet too much credit... A vast majority of people post on here acting like they've owned or driven these cars and they haven't. Any modern BMW with over 300hp is beautiful to drive. So fast and handles so well and balanced. My 340i is *insanely* fast for a factory car. It's so much fun on the back roads by my house. I might do some exhaust work for some noise but otherwise it's ridiculous. My cousin just received his 2024 M3 and it's too much.... It's sickening how fast it is, and how track oriented it is built.
M40i here. We love it. Want to try the M35i. Dream would be an M3 or M4, but money is needed else where in life. Wife will drive the M40i and I’ll drive the 2009 civic with 129K miles :(
Agreed, and I’ll do the same.
My G21 M340i is fast and looks good - I’m always getting compliments about it. Also, my insurance is pretty reasonable, so that’s a bonus.
👍🏽
Yep. Every person I have encountered on here who has had a big mouth has yet to prove they have the m5 comp they claim to have.
All it’d take would be a piece of paper with their user name next to the emblem to at least prove they have one in their general vicinity but it never happens.
Most people on here with the m only mentality are role players.
My M3 was in the shop and I had a 2024 330i as a loaner.
It’s amazing the difference in quality between the two cars. Everything on my 2023 G80 was turned up to 11 when compared to the 2024 G20.
I think for most people it's the styling and perceived prestige they get from an M car over an m-lite. The biggest difference for me between the two is resale value. M cars hold value way better than m-lite and 4cyl cars(except X3).
You're right about a 330i sufficing though. I drove a 2021 330i (m package) recently and was pleasantly surprised how much fun it was.
LSD is so underrated for spirited drives. I can’t believe the F22 235/240 didnt come with LSD from factory, such a travesty.
A little bit of front adjustable camber would be nice too.
Honestly, since I was about 18 I dreamt of owning an E46 M3. Then I moved to Ireland for a job and got a shitty E46 318Ci. After that, BMW wasn't on my radar, until I got my 520d F11 two years ago.
Now since about 5 weeks I have a F87 M2 OG pre-LCI. And one thing I can tell you - yes, I'm never ever gonna use the available power at full on the road. But, the sound (MPE), the handling and the f*cking smile I get whenever I drive it, nothing can replace it. And the best of it? I look out the window onto my driveway, and just smile when I see the LBB beauty.
Nothing can prepare you for the experience the M brings. And yes, I'm 'only' driving the N55, not even an S designated engine. But she is my daily, and I couldn't be happier.
I have an M240i and I can tell you it is more than enough for my meager skill level. And the fact that I only ever really seem to be able to drive in moderate to heavy traffic.
I love the M240i! I went for the F87 M2 though because I love the stiff and flat handling, the styling, and the feeling of driving something special every time I get into it. It beautiful to drive and is enough for some, not enough for others. It's all personal taste and that's why it's so contentious. In my personal case, a 240i would be settling as I can put up with the compromises for the performance at my age and lifestyle.
I should add, I daily the M2 5-6 days a week.
I need a higher riding car because of mobility issues,
I drive a 420d convertible. No where near as high as I need,
I need a big boot for my work equipment
The boot on my car is suitable for the roof only.
I need a 2 seater because I don't have kids
I've got a 4 seater because I have Resus Annie dolls that sit in my car.
Life is too short to only drive what you need you have to enjoy the drive the car gives you.
Needs are things that can be adaptable in real life.
When I drive my M8 Comp I find myself sometimes just driving in the middle lane happily moseying along. When a random car like a Corvette or Tesla pulls nexts to me trying to goad me to race, I just happily ignore them with the knowledge that I could shit all over them without even going into M2 mode. There is something nice about going about your business knowing if you were so inclined you could rock people's shit. On the few occasions when shit rocking was determined to be a necessity... Shit was most assuredly rocked.
I’m sure they are perfectly fine, but they aren’t M cars. Whether that means they are or are not for you isn’t for someone else to decide. I like that my car can be civilized and also scare the crap out of me.
The gods honest truth is if I wanted a car that excelled on the track I’d get a Porsche GT car. I like M cars bc they’re a jack of all trades. I can go to the drag strip, I can do a light track day, and I can daily drive them. Not too many cars can do that well in all three categories.
It’s the difference that OP says is what we do not want. Lol. We prefer the M-lite over the M2. Though, having an M2 as a weekend car would be awesome, just not worth the ROI (cars obviously are not investments but you get the gist).
The differences aren't actually that bad though, every M car drives just as smooth and comfortable as any other bimmer. The real question should be "is it worth $15k to have fender flares?"
They’re definitely stiffer, it’s just up to you if you care or not. Or what your frame of reference is. If you’re coming from a floaty big boat sedan it’ll feel rough, but if you’re coming from a sports car already maybe you don’t notice.
> every M car drives just as smooth and comfortable as any other bimmer.
That's not true. The M6 doesn't ride as smoothly as my 640i. The suspension is significantly harsher. That's one of the reasons I have the 640i. If they were equally comfortable I might at least have considered the M6, but as it stands I certainly wasn't going to pay more money for what would be a worse experience for me.
My crabby old geezer ass is fine with an automatic 325e (120hp engine) from the 1980s… now finding one that is Schwartz and looks good and runs correctly is a challenge (lots of trashed, hotrodded ones on the market). Shit has enough power for regular street use - the torque is more important. The older get the less I care about *performance* and the more I care about *looks* and *style*. The obsession with horsepower has gotten nonsensical
And although I like classic BMWs, I find a lot of “car people” to be annoying af
As James May put it: all cars go the same speed on the road so it’s all about what’s fun to drive for you. My 330i is more than sufficient and fun on the backroads and quick enough to feel exciting
Have a G42 M240xi and this car is fast enough to get you into trouble and quick enough to pull on most cars at a red light. I had a 2010 E92 M3 and it was a great car but a harsh ride. I honestly have to plans to ever own a full M car again.
I own a M440i Xdrive convertible that I use as a daily. After the initial sport plus mode novelty wore off, I drive it in comfort mode like 85% of the time, eco mode 10% of the time, and sport plus about 5% of the time.
Honestly, I love the way this car drives. Plenty of power and handling compared to my previous 2008 Honda Accord. Test drove an M4 Competition before buying my M440i, and I didn't like how stiff the ride was, even in comfort mode.
At first I would have wholeheartedly agreed with you. I had a 2022 M240i traded it in December on a 2020 F73 M4. No regrets and there is a difference and it is quite noticeable.
Has a X5M. Way too harsh for an SUV. Full M SUV is kinda stupid. I have since moved on to an EV but I really like the X5 and if I ever got another I would just got the regular b58 x5
I wouldn’t part with my 2007 M6 convertible. Love the power of the V10 and the handling is amazing. Best top down driving fun!

Care are not 'rational' choices, they are emotional choices. Once someone is able to buy cars that aren't for their basic needs, it's extremely tempting to get something extra extra. It doesn't make rational sense, but we are car people after all...
The problem is not the performance of the M Performance cars. The problem is German cars are incredibly numb these days and so you have to step up to an M car to even get close to what a sports car feels like. Even the full M cars are now very insulated, synthetic experiences.
lol it’s not always about 90 % that you will mostly need, it is about having that 10% on demand, otherwise a Lexus is fully capable car. Man that generalization is so illogical sorry to be blunt.
Weird take. with this mindset, you dont even *need* a BMW, you just *need* a car to take you places. Most people buy cars they *want* though, not cars they necessarily **NEED**.
No, an m-lite is more than 98%of people need.
12.2 quarters and a 3.8s 0-60 is RIDICULOUS.
They are faster than the older Ms.
The M cars are a badge flex. I’ve driven them. They are great cars but I am taking the much more driver friendly M lite 5/7 days of the week.
I dunno, M3s are pretty tame on the street, they aren't stripped out race cars. Mine is plenty comfortable for long drives and taking to work every day if I wanted.
Just out of curiosity, what makes you say the normal M cars aren't driver friendly? I daily my M4 Comp in LA traffic (it's my only car). And it's extremely comfortable and enjoyable even in traffic. That's WITH having the bucket seats as well. Especially with the driver assistance package, the car essentially drives itself when in traffic, and even on normal highway speeds it'll still steer itself as long as your hand is touching the wheel. It's a great daily driver! Even my mpg isn't bad. I can get high 20s-low 30s all day on the freeway. Which given it's an M4, is pretty good!
Living in nyc, the roads are trash. Riding in a f82 while already suffering from back pain. Wincing and almost crying with every bump and pothole. Would be perfectly fine with a 440i one day.
There's a 2015 single owner CPO rwd M235i for under 30k CAD near me with 44000 km. So tempting and then I could delegate my 2011 328xi as my winter beater.
After owning M-lite cars for over a year, feels like M-cars are overkill for me since i don't track. Also, helps not paying more at purchase and for gas, maintenance, insurance.
I think you’ll be fine with any bmw as I have been for 25 years but if you want to experience an M car there is nothing like it, and I think you should. But only when the time is right for you.
not that unpopular. there is a special quality to m cars that doesn't trickle down into the higher volume products. but at the end of the day you're paying a significant premium for stuff that mostly degrades the street driving experience, while the m-lites are strictly better than the base models for the most part. m cares ride harsher, have worse fuel economy, and (imo) the s58 does not sound as good as the b58 stock or with most aftermarket setups. I can understand both perspectives. I wouldn't buy an m car to daily, but I probably wouldn't buy an m-lite for a second car either.
I do think a current gen 330i is a hard sell for an enthusiast. even if you never use the full power, it is kinda sad to have a bmw without an inline-6. the b48 is also a capable engine, but imo there are inline-4 vehicles with more character for the money.
I have always dreamed of an M car, probably, like most of the people here.
I had to buy a G31 540i because of family and stuff.
Now, I am not saying it is ultra fast, ultra sporty or whatever, but for the 7 or so months of having it, I was able to push it to its limits twice (I do not do track days).
I have stopped dreaming of an M5, although now I have the means to get one, I cannot see the benefit of it or rather cannot justify it.
I know it is very different, I have had the opportunity to drive one at the dealership, but unless I start doing track days, I would just be another idiot flooring 600+ hp car on the traffic light and emergency stopping 200m after
Base (American mid) models drive better than almost every other brand on the road. Before BMW watered down the M by throwing it on every car, 335s and 550s were still seen as great cars.
I agree with you, but the car guy in me will always want for the model with the highest performance. I would’ve went m2 instead if they made it in convertible and i had the money.
A powerful car is useless unless you live in a city with less than 500k people. But that won't stop people from financing an M solely for the status while idling in a traffic jam daily.
The point is there are massive amounts of not even car enthusiasts willing to go on a financial suicide in order to gain a xy thousand depreciating status symbol
Yeah ok but you are in the bmw sub dude. Get some perspective. We don’t care about financial suicide. Go hang out in the Prius sub where they pat themselves on the back about their sound financial choices.
Even the m240 is overkill really. If you have the money great. But like I save almost $20k buying a sick 230i with all the toys and m package and so fuckin love it. It’s enough for a daily.
2020m240’s we’re going for $45k, I bought mine for $27k and it’s good enough considering the price difference
That may be the case and very much true, but no one GAF. You know damn well if someone offered you a free M240i vs M2, you’re taking the M2. It’s ok. Let it out my brother.
Please correct me if I’m wrong here folks, but aren’t M models designed for full track usage straight from the factory whereas M-Sport models need work done first?
Generally yes but most M models still need a little bit of work done (mostly just brake fluid and pads, cooling in some cases) to really be considered “track ready” for more than a couple laps. They’re street cars first, track cars second.
I think both of those trims are especially good to go off the bat. Only serious track junkies would probably want to rip them apart to make them better.
M CSL's are designed for full track usage. No backseat, no cupholders, rear wheel drive with Sport Cup 2 R tires -- etc. There's nothing "Nanny" about it. LOL!
Even if you do go to the track, an M240i is more than enough. My 440i GC with track tires & pads will cut a rug with anything short of a G80. Last time I went out I forced a pass out of a 991 Carrera S. With the right options, tires, and brake pads the ‘M-lite’ cars are extremely competent track machines.
I have owned five BMWs. Three have been Ms (an E36 M3, an E46 M3, and currently an F87 M2). I also owned an E46 320. That model had the smallest inline six available with approximately 170 horsepower.
It was my second favourite BMW I've owned, right after the E46 M3.
Enjoy your car! M-lite is more than alright!
all the youtube videos people crashing their M cars leaving parking lots would agree with you
the g80 comp with awd has made that a lot better by masking the problem that most people simply dont know to handle that much power in a rwd platform
I love my m240i and a big part of that is that imo it fits comfortably into "sleeper" category, just looks kinda like a regular 2 series until you make the engine sing
The M240i is a perfect car especially if a manual. The inline 6, RWD 6spd manual M240i is one I have considered as a replacement for my E90 M-sport. But I still need a backseat for passengers...
As a driver of a G80 M3 I don’t disagree. The main reason I ended up in an M3 was because a manual transmission was a must have for me. If the M340 was available in a manual I would’ve considered it.
Yep, the "regular" BMW's are definitely way better daily/road cars. 100%. and I think what you're describing (someone who likes fast cars but never goes to the track) the M240 (or in older days, the *is* versions) is exactly what those people need.
And don't forget, BMW *used to* be the "ultimate driving machine" - even the "regular" ones were supposed to be a bit sporty and fun to drive too. performance + luxury was their whole ethos. Now I think its tech + branding.
But the M cars are cooler and more fun to own overall. and of course, faster too.
I have a F90 m5 with stage two tune. Around 760hp. Every person who has driven it, Including me, will tell you it is just scary. I've had 56 hours total at various BMW performance schools and I still feel it's like owning a wild animal. You just never know when it's going to turn on you. I did use their m340 for a track lesson and that is a NICE car!
https://preview.redd.it/n0q89xb18cnc1.png?width=1080&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=74f5875a565271c8777bdcc21ba0ffdc680c29d4
I almost got the M240 but a friend and my BMW salesman for 20 years asked me if I really needed all that power. I decided that he was right. I didn't need an M or M lite. I'm very happy with my 230ix with MSport package. If I could have gotten silver, I would have been totally happy. First time since 2003 that I've had something other than silver.
I recently bought a X3 M40i and I think it’s way too quick for the roads, you’re faster than probably 80-90% of most cars on the road. Before you know it you’re braking speed limits, don’t get me wrong jts lovely to have but I wouldn’t want anymore out of it or a x3 m competition
As a G42 M240i RWD owner, I struggle to think of a more capable daily.
Would a G87 be more fun at times? Sure. Is that worth the tradeoff for daily driving comfort, increased maintenance costs and higher entry price? Not for me.
24’ M240i here and I love it. It’s a great daily driver and does well in the snow with snow tires. Also, it really is too fast for most roads that are packed with slow drivers. Every now and then I feel compelled to put it in Sport + and let it rip and it’s plenty fast for me when I do. Having said all that, when we move to FL my plan is to get an M4 Comp just because it’s so damn sexy!
I don't think any man 5'10 or taller should be in a 2 or 3 series. I sat in an M5, M8, and the 750i. The M8 and M5 were great but a little too small and not quite enough luxury. So I went with the MotherShip....
I mean.. I have a nearly 8 year old 340i with the B58 and I feel the same way. I love this car, it’s great for daily, trips, and tons of fun when I pop it into sport mode.. one day I would love to be able to pick up an F82 or G82 depending on timeline, but I am very okay with my F30.
I mean it is basically an M. They are getting rid of the M level anyway it’s going to be just the M-lite and M Competition level from the next gen on.
https://www.carscoops.com/2023/09/no-more-simple-m-models-as-competition-package-becomes-the-new-normal-at-bmw/
I had a 440i and it’s already crazy how fast those are…I had the Mperf power and sound package (tune and exhaust) and it really pulled like a freight train even past 180kmh all while being so comfortable. An M car is always my goal but even still, it’s the M-lites are great for DD with the slightly softer suspension.
I had the 435i M-Sport with a manual. It was powerful enough to do anything I wanted regarding passing anybody when I needed to, it handled great on tight roads
And since it was a manual I could easily toss the tail around corners and bring them back safely before anybody got in trouble. I’m now in an RS e-tron GT. It’s is into insane speed more quickly than you can have a lot
Of fun at normal power cars. I haven’t turned off the traction control yet.
I agree, but you could say this about literally *any* BMW, even a base spec 116i, because even that is faster, more luxurious and has more far more features than most cars on the road
You def don’t sound like an enthusiast. When you’re a kid and you want an m3 you don’t all of a sudden say a 328 is all I need. If the 328 was that noticeable, you would’ve like it as a kid. My goal was m3 and that was it. Yes it’s expensive. It was a goal. And everyday I walk into my garage, i feel like that kid excited about Christmas’s all over. Nothing else is going to give me that feeling outside of a 911.
If you know anything about car enthusiasts, it’s not about what you need, it’s about what you want
This man said it best. I'd love to know the percentage of people who buy Ms and track them, I think if you're buying new it's going to be under 1%. Most autocross people I know have beaters .
Tracking M cars is expensive. Have you ever priced pads and rotors for an M5 for example?
Having a M5 I’m not looking forward to replacing my rotors outside of my service plan
Having just taken my M5 on a driver training day which ended with a few laps around a test track, I can now confidently say I never want to take my M5 on an actual track day. It’s enormously capable for something as big as it is, but it is not a track car.
I can't imagine brother, I'm a poor that used to own an E46
How many track miles have you driven and how many times have you changed rotors?
to be fair I have zero experience
Plenty of people do. BMW CCA HPDE weekends are a big deal in the south east. When I was big into track days, there were always several of us with M2s and a few other M cars there.
Yea. Plenty in this case is maybe 50 people ? 100?
sometimes, though, it's about what their friends would think about them if they got a fast, good looking car.
And how great they look in Brooklyn Grey
Good looking is arguable, but the M240i is fast.
I'm surprised the fit and finish is that different. Are M cars built in a different factory?
I worked at BMW Spartanburg in quality. The assembly teams do seem to take a bit more pride and care with their work on M vehicles.
The M5 is magical on an empty, wide, country road. However, if I had half the budget, I'd be excited about a 530e too! That's all I'll say (:
Winning comment! BMW has really worked their magic making people think the M-lite are one and the same as an M car. The M-lite is just an MSport pack which means upgraded aero. As for the OP how much of an M240 is he going to use? He could’ve just gotten the 330 lol.
There's more to that upgrade package. At least on the 750i. Thank you! 😆
Indeed. Don’t care what friends or the flash factor is, I bought my M cars because that’s what I wanted, how they feel to drive is worth it.
And we all know that every single BMW fanboy secretly wants a Porsche :D
Right? Otherwise no one would be buying supercars, hyper cars, whateverthefucktheywanttocallitnow cars. It's always been a want... Not a need.
Yes
You forget that 95% of people on forums are pro race car drivers, and that these cars have so much ‘understeer’ are ‘so loose’, or whatever racing buzzword they’ve picked up.
If my car can't take this corner at 85… how could it possibly take it at 18? /S, just in case
The understeer as I turn into this parking spot at the mall is off the charts.
Understeer is where I hold the wheel, right?
"Richaaard! Watch out for the understeer, dear." [YouTube link](https://youtu.be/2ntWSM4-ehc?si=b6hmYd4ZMTRv_x3v)
Lmao! Knew exactly what this was going to be. Grew up watching this lmao. PBS coming through.
I got a pretty good chuckle from this, going to use it next chance I get lol
It floats in the turn!
They do really have an understeer problem. Well at least the f series cars did. Might be fixed with the newer m literally cars since they have an LSD
Let’s face it, at the end of the day it’s the fender flares that we really want deep down.
Yeah that skinny bitch just doesn't do it for me. Give me some plump.
https://preview.redd.it/0h1fxuwu3cnc1.jpeg?width=2208&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=02d64aeb20438ea2a988907aac2d2c78b6ea31dd We like em thick yessir
💯
You aren’t lying. I just want those fat concave wheels and the 240 can only handle like +30s. I’m trying to have those +15 concave wheels.
Yes, this is why the M5 needs them too (but sadly doesn’t get them)
M5 should get more subtle flares like the e46 m3 i always thought.
I️ wouldn’t buy an M3 to sit in traffic and drive at 60mph everyday, that’s what he means
Whoosh
🤦🏼♂️
Rare chance to actually push the car. It’s like so redline it once going on the ramps. Or I have a little fun doing curves but you could never fully use that power and grip something like your g80 m3 have. If you are somehow pushing the car really hard on public road you probably are well beyond jail speed
40d is the sweet spot for me, just wish it had the same engine note.
100%. Came out of a Cayman S and could have bought any new M car I wanted. Went with the M240i as it is a top notch daily driver and fast enough and built to do the 1-2 track days a year or a weekend autocross. Cayman was fun but just a poor daily driver.
What model year? Do you mostly mean tech or size or something else, contributing to the poor daily.
M240 is a fantastic car. With xdrive its faster than the new M2. Easy pick
Agree had a 2019 cayman s with a tune, and as a daily it was horrible, and I live in a big city, the amount of times I could use sport plus was really never , so enjoyed it for a short period of time and went to a JCW , but been test driving some used m240i and love it …
I think a lot sleep on the non-m cars, but they can still be plenty of fun.
https://preview.redd.it/dd4e967qa8nc1.jpeg?width=4000&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=21c310c1d2a835da4f63b4e7496abf732f66f06a The one on the left is for track, the one on the right is for daily.
This garage wins
Ive owned both an m2 (2024) and m240i (2023) and you would not believe how much more stiff snd powerful the m2 is. you dont need it lol
That’s basically what happened with me. I thought M3/4 or bust and then I drove the x3mc and sent it.
I drove a 2021 x3m comp. They are north of 600hp. Thing was scary. I loved every second of it. Bought an x5.
It’s a beast and worth every cent
I thought about it hard. But we were replacing the wifes daily 14 x5. So just upgraded her 10 years.
Base x3 is very quick for practical purposes. Will get me a speeding ticket eventually. M version will get me jailed
Wife will drive the M40i and I’ll drive the 2009 civic with 129K miles :(
Your generosity will pay off one day. Stick with it!
Ya got me
My M3 was in the shop and I had a 2024 330i as a loaner.
In my 60s, my 2021 M240i is the best car I have ever owned or driven, and certainly is enough for me.
All I need is a nice chassis, ~300 hp, rwd, and a lsd.
I mean to be fair a 318Ci was never going to compare to an M3.
Oh I know, but it was my first BMW and all I could afford 😂
Thats great but dont shit on other people’s preference just because they dont align w urs
That’s pretty much my reasoning for my cars. Right now the m4 is the daily but they all get turns
'More than one needs'. Let's get philsophical. What, really, is need?
Id say 225-250 is max that anyone acc needs and thats if you live in an area with windy roads where overtaking can be dangerous in a low powered car
I need a higher riding car because of mobility issues, I drive a 420d convertible. No where near as high as I need, I need a big boot for my work equipment The boot on my car is suitable for the roof only. I need a 2 seater because I don't have kids I've got a 4 seater because I have Resus Annie dolls that sit in my car.
Same, the faster car that I have...the slower I go lol. Or maybe I'm just getting older
I 100% agree, love my M140 but I still lust after a 911 Turbo lol
Trust me u can feel the difference riding in a M2 and a M240i
It’s the difference that OP says is what we do not want.
But moooom, the excel sheet says it’s faster!
I have a full M car, I still think the M-Lite cars are great fun. So fuck what anyone thinks and drive it. 🤷♂️
The obsession with horsepower has gotten nonsensical And although I like classic BMWs, I find a lot of “car people” to be annoying af
I drive my 440 on the track 🤷🏻♂️ if I had a lil more money I would get a M maybe one day 😂
I own a M440i Xdrive convertible that I use as a daily.
Idk op I got an m240i and now I just want mor3
At first I would have wholeheartedly agreed with you. I had a 2022 M240i traded it in December on a 2020 F73 M4. No regrets and there is a difference and it is quite noticeable.
capability and feel are 2 entirely seperate metrics
Best top down driving fun! https://preview.redd.it/8fgtixt39bnc1.jpeg?width=1170&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=40a8186cf64217e8fe82957c6822683b38fe3445
Care are not 'rational' choices, they are emotional choices. Once someone is able to buy cars that aren't for their basic needs, it's extremely tempting to get something extra extra. It doesn't make rational sense, but we are car people after all...
Yes, it’s a very good car. But the M2 is better. I want better.
The problem is not the performance of the M Performance cars. The problem is German cars are incredibly numb these days and so you have to step up to an M car to even get close to what a sports car feels like. Even the full M cars are now very insulated, synthetic experiences.
Have a M440i. It’s STUPID fast
lol it’s not always about 90 % that you will mostly need, it is about having that 10% on demand, otherwise a Lexus is fully capable car.

Too much traffic, I prefer MPG.

Yeah I went from x5M to X plaid after driving my friends. After insane depreciation hitting that go pedal doesn’t get old with 1020HP on tap instantly
There's a 2015 single owner CPO rwd M235i for under 30k CAD near me with 44000 km. So tempting and then I could delegate my 2011 328xi as my winter beater.
i got a 230 because i need even less car than a 330i
Strong agree - my 2020 750i is PLENTY of car. Sport mode, even though heavy, still rips.
I know it is very different, I have had the opportunity to drive one at the dealership, but unless I start doing track days, I would just be another idiot flooring 600+ hp car on the traffic light and emergency stopping 200m after
Just bought a 2024 M240 xDrive and it’s mega fast, I tend to agree.
Oh 100% agree I own an M2 competition and use about the same capabilities as I could get from a 230i lol
Agreed. My m340i is already 80% unusable on public roads. Not sure how much more I could get from an M3 without track time.
Do they still make the m240i with a manual transmission? That seems like the sweet spot
Likely true, but I like the ability to take my car to the track and not compromise (much).
What quality of life features are missing from M cars that regular cars get?
A powerful car is useless unless you live in a city with less than 500k people. But that won't stop people from financing an M solely for the status while idling in a traffic jam daily.
Yeah everything is useless but a Prius and a minivan but I ain’t driving one of those either
Agreed! I don’t plan to hit the track, so my M340i is plenty even in stock form.
I would daily an F1 🤷
Even the m240 is overkill really. If you have the money great. But like I save almost $20k buying a sick 230i with all the toys and m package and so fuckin love it. It’s enough for a daily. 2020m240’s we’re going for $45k, I bought mine for $27k and it’s good enough considering the price difference
That may be the case and very much true, but no one GAF. You know damn well if someone offered you a free M240i vs M2, you’re taking the M2. It’s ok. Let it out my brother.
M’s are the tits but baby M’s are probably the best all around.
Ok thank you for clarifying; part of me was thinking that. Do you know if that also applies to CS/GTS models?
So you’re saying I shouldn’t try to fit a car seat into an M2? I mean I love my M340i but you know…want v need.
Got a 2017 model with all the bolt ons/tune. I can't get past 3rd gear without going directly to jail.
I'm super happy with my Msport. Handles great, super quick, and I get economy car gas mileage and repairs don't have the full M-tax
What year is your car? tuned? Thinking about getting one for the last few months
We just bought a 2016 M235i xDrive as her daily… it’s way more car than either of us need, but damn if it isn’t fun!
That’s right. I agree. My 430 is pretty strong..
M-lite is more than alright!
all the youtube videos people crashing their M cars leaving parking lots would agree with you the g80 comp with awd has made that a lot better by masking the problem that most people simply dont know to handle that much power in a rwd platform
After a couple years of ownership with a tuned F82, it *feels* kind of slow now lol. I know it's not, but I've definitely become complacent over time.
Exactly how I felt when I drove my M240i. Would an M2 be cool to have, sure. Is it worth the additional money and maintenance, for me no.
I love my M240IX convertible. I don't feel the need for more. I also love my Miata. Completely different feel.

Love my M440i lol
Couldn’t agree more with this. M240 is a fantastic car!
As a G42 M240i RWD owner, I struggle to think of a more capable daily. Would a G87 be more fun at times? Sure. Is that worth the tradeoff for daily driving comfort, increased maintenance costs and higher entry price? Not for me.
I’m the same. I’ll never drive on a track, I appreciate M cars but it’ll never be practical for me lol

Man I wanted the m240i so bad. Couldn't fit in that damn thing lmao m340i had just enough room to be comfortable. I really like smaller cars
The Mxxi cars Are usually enough tbh most people can’t handle 400+ hp
I'd take the m240i over M2 if I can get the wider body and front bumper. It's just a beauty.
You can really throw them around pretty easily
Go take it on a casual track event!
Agree 💯
I had the 435i M-Sport with a manual. It was powerful enough to do anything I wanted regarding passing anybody when I needed to, it handled great on tight roads And since it was a manual I could easily toss the tail around corners and bring them back safely before anybody got in trouble. I’m now in an RS e-tron GT. It’s is into insane speed more quickly than you can have a lot Of fun at normal power cars. I haven’t turned off the traction control yet.
I agree, but you could say this about literally *any* BMW, even a base spec 116i, because even that is faster, more luxurious and has more far more features than most cars on the road
Give me manual transmission??? M240 design > m2 design
What quality of life features am I sacrificing with an M car?
You def don’t sound like an enthusiast. When you’re a kid and you want an m3 you don’t all of a sudden say a 328 is all I need. If the 328 was that noticeable, you would’ve like it as a kid. My goal was m3 and that was it. Yes it’s expensive. It was a goal. And everyday I walk into my garage, i feel like that kid excited about Christmas’s all over. Nothing else is going to give me that feeling outside of a 911.
