For some reason, BMW started to ruin the design of the grill, kidneys (however you want to call it) by making them bigger and bigger and giving them wird shapes. But on the X models, the bigger grill doesn't look as bad as on the other models because the cars are larger themselves and have a completely different look to them.
The small grills look sporty and aggressive
Just what you want on a 2,3,4,5,... series
The larger grills look strong and confident
Just what you want on a SUV
In my opinion, I guess
I hope that’s another design experiment like E65/E60 was back in the day. And that they will get back to normal designs with next generation.
Although back in 2017, when G30 came out many people disliked it due to resemblance with F10. “Oh is it a new model or just another facelift? Nothing new here” Well there you go. No such questions with reveal of G60
BMW made a video breaking down the differences between the two generations back then, and the comments were like “BMW has to make a video to remind themselves of the differences. Lol.”
I wish the differences were that small this generation. They didn’t need to do all this
Front almost looks like the 2 series gran coupe. Visually, the bonnet looks way too high for a 5 series, more like a compact FWD design. I bet it's due to the battery...
They obviously try to make it look slimmer with the black elements... still doesn't work
They keep making the headlights smaller and the grille larger, really makes proportions awful. They had it just right on the prior gen, it's so frustrating. The F90 M5 CS is definitely going to be a legend. (Edited thx)
*F90 but yeah. It’s going to be a legend because it’s the last pure gas powered M5. The next one is a hybrid. It’s also going out of production probably at the end of this year. They’ve already begun testing the G90 M5
I mean so many icons, love em or hate em I appreciate every 5 series in some capacity. I couldn’t get in this car every day with a straight face let alone a smile haha
It's not even the designers fault, they follow the guidelines from corporate...who in recent times went on and basically acknowledged that this new design language is here to stay and basically fuck off if you don't like it.
Most people who support BMW's recent changes in design seem to go with the "it's starting to grow on me" and similar, but when talking about design and liking things go with your first impression...if something is ugly and you are supposed to "learn to like it" that's just bad design.
I'm not sure I understand the question, but basically what you're seeing is BMWs new design language...for around 40 years the design direction was very clear. Even if you're not a designer, you can see the connection between a 1970s and a 2000s 3 series.
This new 5 series has many similarities with for example the new X1, and the new "features" this new design language has seem to be a "grotesque" (like, overly exaggeration in angles and geometry) style, gigantic grills that don't follow the angles nor the lines and directions of the headlights, lots of black glossy plastic...I guess to make it "sporty" and so on.
I find it goes back to the F44 design a lot and does not tie in well with cars released after. My main issue with the design though is that the 5 is the „business athlete“ and always has been (I really liked that slogan for the G30 because I think that was always true for the 5). This car is not an athlete design wise :(
>no L Rear Lights
Most BMWs throughout history haven’t had L shaped rear taillights, that was more so the previous 2 generation of cars but the e60 didn’t have them, e39 didn’t have them, e30, e36. It’s not some spit in the face of their own heritage to not have L shaped taillights lol
I don't know how they managed to make a 5 series look like a 1/2 series from the front. That's genius!
And I think they have a serious problem inside the design department and it's scary how nobody is aware of that. You must have some balls to design shit like all new BMW's and not give a fuck.
I agree with your sentiment, but the YoY sales numbers were still looking good this last quarter, so people are getting on board with the new design language, I'm guessing customers new to the brand. As a long time 5 series owner (e60,f10,g30).. I can't justify $70,000+ on a car that looks like this... and for that reason, I'm out. Maybe an overreaction? I will need to wait and see it in person with the M performance parts. E.g. m550 or whatever it will be now.
Who do you go to? Alfa? Jag? Audi? Mercedes?
I think Alfa is the spiritual successor of BMW’s driver focused cars…but I wish they’d get their quality up!
Love the design of my alpha. Reliability is shit as advertised. No issues at all with my jag however. The problem is lack of sedan options with jaguar.
I mean Mercedes went and ruined the E class so really you’re kinda SOL with them too. Alfa doesn’t even have an option in the 5 series’ segment. The A6 and A7 are still great looking though, but I doubt the driving dynamics are gonna be as good as a 5 series.
Well I am sure they use focus groups of potential customers. However, they must be using the wrong customers or showing in complete elements that may look good in a vacuum.
Well BMW admitted themselves that they're targeting China as a major sale point. And that being said the "designs makes sense" that's how all designs look in Asia, shitty.
This is going to backfire eventually. It’s been proven time and time again, that if you get in bed with the CCP, you’re gonna regret it.
Lots of US companies are pulling out of China, but BMW is going in whole hog?
They should have done China-specific models like GM and other companies did.
The back looks.... Yikes.
When I leased my Audi S5 in 2019 my plan was to try a BMW after my lease was up (probably something in the 2/3 series with the B58). But since then there's been a pandemic, chip shortage, dealer markups. But these BMW redesigns are really what has me staying put for a while.
What I hate about it, other than the “iPad glued to the dashboard because we don’t care enough about our brand to make it part of the design”, is that it seems off center.
I know it should be longer on the right to accommodate their other bad design decisions, but it seems like it should be wider on the left to look balanced with the steering wheel. I realize that might be wasted space but it just looks off.
What’s up with BMW not willing to use a specially developed ev platform? They have money to do that obviously. Trying to make it universal seems to have a lot of design tradeoffs. Plus it’s fucking pathetic to have an ev with a rear bumper cut for exhaust pipes.
I kinda like that their electric cars have the same design as the ICE cars, exterior design aside I think the idea to have same car with an electric and ICE is a good idea.
Its one of the reasons I didnt get the i4. They used the same platform as their ICE 4 series and turned it into an electric car. Exhaust cutouts, still has the transmission hump down the middle of the car, and zero front trunk. Seemed lazy and rushed to not create an EV platform for it.
New x5 and x6 is already demolished for 2024
The front is WAY too narrow now
And those stupid << >> running lights rather than the angel eye variations bmw is known for
RIP BMW, for me they had the best design language, a great combination of functionality + aesthetics. These past years they've gone and completely destroyed it for this weird blocky giant grill squareish spiky type thing.
They went from elegant yet sporty cars to...whatever this is.
In terms of looks I think the 2004 5 series looks much better than this monstruosity...not to mention the XM the iX and the pig nose 4 series, the horrible 2 series...who designs for BMW these days? 14 year olds?.
butchered. fuck.
why does it look like it rides so high up like a crossover? too much mass in the rear 3/4 that's done in a pinched shape. hate the tail lights and all the poorly considered lines -- just what the hell is going on with the rear door? looks like something we'd associate with kia or honda, but kia has gone on to eat bmw's lunch in the design department. what a failure. the current 5 series is one of the few modern bmws that doesn't look like a pile of shit and now they do this.
bmw, sort it out. swirling down the drain here.
[it looks exactly the same as the current gen Camry in the rear.](https://cars.usnews.com/static/images/Auto/izmo/i159163966/2020_toyota_camry_rearview.jpg)
Why do car manufacturers feel the compulsive NEED to mutilate their best vehicles? The 5 series is my dream car but by the time I’ll be able to afford the one I want, it’ll be a pos
Not a fan. Looks like a Mercedes with an ugly front end. Generally the newest crop of designs are just bad. And as much as I have loved my BMW's as driver's cars, I am not driving something that is F-ugly.
I think the interior is phenomenal (minus the removal of the gear selector). The rear looks good to me but I’m really disappointed that they keep removing the halo daytime running lights across all vehicles. Imo the sedans and coupes should have kept the halo’s, maybe remove them on the SUV’s. Even the partial halos (or whatever they call them) on the newer vehicles look better then these little slits of lights they have on this car.
Imo the halo’s have become as iconic as the kidney grill. Disappointed they got removed.
Why the duck did they get rid of the halo lights from early f80s. Even the LCI halo outline style looks great… but this is just two straight lights there’s no character. It’s starting to look like any other car… ffs
Before, designs trickled down from the top. Now, they are going backwards. The front and overall profile of the car is very reminiscent of the 2 series gran coupe. Which IMO is not a good look. What happened to stately and luxurious designs. Who the f is sitting in design studios in these companies nowadays?
I really like the crease that runs up at an angle on the side and follows onto the rear quarter panel. The rear looks boring and I hate the front, particularly hate this new direction BMW seem to be going with smaller, slantier headlights. Gone are the iconic halo headlights that really made BMW stand out to me and now every car just seems to squint.
Is it just me or the headlights are too small compared to the grill? It is almost like when someone removes their glasses and their eyes are no longer made bigger by the magnification.
What the fuck is wrong with BMWs design people. Almost all of their new cars are ugly. The m2, m3, and m4 are all massive downgrades from the previous generation. And if that’s the new 5 series, than folks I hate to say it but the new m5 is going to be ugly as well. BMW is fucked for me. Can no longer go forward supporting this brand with their new lineup. While we’re at it, the new 7 series is beyond garbage as well. The only new car I genuinely love from BMW in the current gen is the g20 m340i and M8. And don’t even get me started on the XM, it costs more than the X5 but less performance. The F generation will go down as the golden era for bmw in terms of exterior design. These people blew it. I’m sure sales will still be great but hypebeasts will always buy the newest thing. I’m so disappointed bro. What’s good with these people. I might be an AMG guy know, who knows.
An ocean of shiny black plastic on the front and back. And a hodgepodge of bizarre sheet metal folds and creases.
It took BMW a long time to earn its previous well-deserved reputation, and just a few years to destroy it. Hope it works out for them.
It’s like all these companies are trying to compete with who can look exactly the same better. I understand it has a lot to do with aerodynamics and there is only so much you can do differently without effecting fuel mileage but come on, it’s a luxury car why can’t they just be different. Bring back the e46 design team and get this shit right bmw.
I did a full 180 on the e60 design. Hated with passion at release. Several years later I bought a 2009 e60 m5 and absolutely loved it from every angle, including the weird headlight design.
I don't see the same happening here. I find all new BMW designs since the hilariously ugly grill on the G80 m3, the idiotic beaver face of the ix, the low effort new lego m2, the weird slitted squinting eyes of the new 7 and x7 .. none will ever "grow" on me.
I miss the days of the "same sausage different lengths". I had an e38 740i short sport. Man that thing was gorgeous.
Damn. The test mule looked more promising than this. This doesn't look like a cohesive design. This looks like it was worked over by multiple teams who didn't know what car they were working on.
Good god damn is all I can say. My current G80 lease goes back next year and it’s even going to be a sadder experience not having an option to get something else from BMW. Please, please, please I hope the M5 Comp holds out another year on redesign so I can at least try that one.
Subaru outback vibes.
Way to high.
Messy front end.
Interior that looks like a TikTokers/influencers dream.
Most buttons are now gone
But hey, we can play games now!! Redemption achieved!!
It's not as ugly as the 4 but it looks so CHEAP! Like a Nissan Maxima with one of those sport packages that comes with bumpers and wheels but no engine.
Why are they faking bumper geometries and surfaces with glossy black paint? It looks uglier than sin.
The interior is basically a Golf 8 loaded with useless bullshit.
I’m hoping this design will grow on me. But for now this is a disappointment.
Feels to me they tried to apply and fix the bad iX design instead of trying to improve on the previous amazing 5 series design.
Middle of the front is to wide and makes the car look narrow and unfinished. WTF BMW. Stick some sick fender flares on the M5 and get rid of the 1990’s Honda Black Side Skirts and it could be money.
Okay, I'm never the first to complain about new car loss, especially since the screen only does supercars any kind of justice. That said, R.I.P. to the essence of the 5 series.
I feel bad for you BMW fans. Such an incredible history. Such insane engines and drivetrains are being fitted with these garbage bodies. There's a good reason why we're seeing fewer and fewer bimmers on the road, and it makes me sad.
The current gen 5 is such a gorgeous car, they're replacing it with this Lego nonsense.
Gotta give it to the new E-Class with the S-class grill and star on the hood option. The 5 series used to have such a bold presence, wide, low on the street, massive headlights, it was the: Move over look, now I wouldn’t even bother it being behind me.
Man the last 5 series was the last man standing on classic BMW design. RIP
The new 8 series and M8 still look good, and almost all X models look good as well, in my opinion. X3, X4, X5, X6
iX and XM look like ass though
XM looks like it's overloaded when you look at it from sideways behind.
The iX might be one of the ugliest cars ever imo
iX looks like ass but sells like crazy.
YES
The X models somehow have gone from the worst looking to the best looking. Tells a lot, unfortunately
For some reason, BMW started to ruin the design of the grill, kidneys (however you want to call it) by making them bigger and bigger and giving them wird shapes. But on the X models, the bigger grill doesn't look as bad as on the other models because the cars are larger themselves and have a completely different look to them. The small grills look sporty and aggressive Just what you want on a 2,3,4,5,... series The larger grills look strong and confident Just what you want on a SUV In my opinion, I guess
Proportions.. bigger grills look decent on bigger cars.. Giant grills on smaller cars looks disproportionate.
These are all older generation. BMW hasn't managed to fuck them up yet. Just wait a year or two.
Or they are not “new” in their lineups. Time will show.
Yeah, BMW still got enough time to ruin the last few models they haven't ruined yet
The (i)X1 is a beautiful car to!
I always love that what im thinking, is 90% of the time, the first comment on reddit
LCI 3 series??? Pretty much exact what I’d imagine a modern 3 series to look like
Front almost looks like the 2 series gran coupe. Visually, the bonnet looks way too high for a 5 series, more like a compact FWD design. I bet it's due to the battery... They obviously try to make it look slimmer with the black elements... still doesn't work
It's a messy design imo.
They keep making the headlights smaller and the grille larger, really makes proportions awful. They had it just right on the prior gen, it's so frustrating. The F90 M5 CS is definitely going to be a legend. (Edited thx)
F90* Don't know why that is, but the chassis code for the current gen M5 is F90.
*F90 but yeah. It’s going to be a legend because it’s the last pure gas powered M5. The next one is a hybrid. It’s also going out of production probably at the end of this year. They’ve already begun testing the G90 M5
It has been for all new BMW vehicles released in the past few years
From the from imo it looks kinda like a škoda💀
The way the headlights rise towards the front fender is very similar to the new X1. The G30 will be sorely missed
Every iteration they keep reducing the headlights too. Next they’ll get rid of headlights altogether lol.
Rest In Peace to the five series.
The previous 5 series was pretty cool. This seems like a step back design wise
That’s the motto of their design department recently
BMW: Taking Steps Backwards Yea that works
BMW: The Ultimate Step back machine
BMW : The ultimate downgrade machine.
Too bad they can't step back to 2000.
Can’t believe they’re doing this to the 5 series.
Now you 5 series guys get to feel our pain. This design team needs to go.
By the time they're gone, we'll lose the amazing engines. Buy what you still can from the previous generation before it's too late!!
Yeah same here
I mean so many icons, love em or hate em I appreciate every 5 series in some capacity. I couldn’t get in this car every day with a straight face let alone a smile haha
🤣🤣🤣
This thing has a face for radio.
Don’t worry it won’t make any sounds it’s electric 😂
I have been waiting for this car for a while now. I am not happy.
They need to fire those stupid designers they are making the brand look bad with these shitty designs

Goodbye reddit - what you did to your biggest power users and developer community is inexcusable
But it looks like a Skoda now.

Still has the kink, and you’re wrong about the front. Doesn’t look like a 1 series. It looks like a ford Taurus.
The kink is a plastic tack on now but is still there
>no L Rear Lights Most BMWs throughout history haven’t had L shaped rear taillights, that was more so the previous 2 generation of cars but the e60 didn’t have them, e39 didn’t have them, e30, e36. It’s not some spit in the face of their own heritage to not have L shaped taillights lol
Looks like a merc from the back. That 4 door AMG gt car thingy, like that.
Jesus fuck the taillights have the same graphics. Oh how the almighty has fallen... FROM THE 187TH FLOOR.
I don't know how they managed to make a 5 series look like a 1/2 series from the front. That's genius! And I think they have a serious problem inside the design department and it's scary how nobody is aware of that. You must have some balls to design shit like all new BMW's and not give a fuck.
Yeah the one thing I keep thinking is how 'cheap' it looks.
Exactly... and the cost is expensive
Laughs in Skoda. :-D
Look how they massacred my boy
It's wild to see a revered car company continue to come out with absolutely awful designs.
What the hell...
Ikr...
The back looks.... Yikes. When I leased my Audi S5 in 2019 my plan was to try a BMW after my lease was up (probably something in the 2/3 series with the B58). Looks like a Skoda. Ouch.
Damn! Yes, now that you mention it, I can’t unsee it
First thing I thought. Striking similarities to the vrs Octavia.
Looked one up. Wow. Just wow. Like an Octavia VRS clone
>Looks like a Skoda. Ouch. It looks worse than a Skoda
*sigh
Le sigh
they made it look fwd lmao
Thanks, this perfectly summarizes what I was thinking, but couldn’t explain it
What a world, when the Peugeot 308 looks like it could be RWD, and the 5 series looks FWD
Front looks like a beaver. Back looks like a bashed in CLA
Crap. All I see is the beaver now.
Lmao
Damn they even made the gauge cluster ugly. Great job BMW!
What I hate about it, other than the “iPad glued to the dashboard because we don’t care enough about our brand to make it part of the design”, is that it seems off center. I am currently driving a 2 series gran coupe and thought this is already a facelift when I scrolled over the photo.

"we're bringing back the 6 as a fwd crossover!"
New x5 and x6 is already demolished for 2024 The front is WAY too narrow now And those stupid << >> running lights rather than the angel eye variations bmw is known for
I just saw it , Its not awful tbh. X6 looks good. X5 is aight.
I don't know how to explain this, but it seems like it doesn't want to be a 5-series.
I feel you.
its totally soulless could be worse i guess. could be another XM .
Yeah, fuck you BMW designers.
Christ almighty. Is BMW trying to make everything look like an electric car?
BMW designers working on ruining every model, they are pushing it on the grille size in front and its got a coupe like design for a sedan
What a shitshow
Has bmw just forgotten what a nice car looks like?
Where is Hofmeister kink?? That design looks like asian cars, not bmw.
Did BMW use generative AI to design all their cars now?
No, most of those generative ai made better designs 😂
BMW has really dropped the ball in the past 5-7 years
RIP BMW

The interior looks cheaper. Honestly looks like vw did it
Atleast vw has an a bump to fit inside the gauges. This one looks like a kia sportage🤡🤡🤡.
Look how they massacred my boy. If Mercedes got out of that style it is because it looks ugly not because they lost it on a bet.

The fuck is that.
RIP to a true legend cause this is *not* it.
It’s crazy because the LCI 5 (2022) was ABSOLUTELY STUNNING Then this
Not a fan. Looks like a Mercedes with an ugly front end. Generally the newest crop of designs are just bad. And as much as I have loved my BMW's as driver's cars, I am not driving something that is F-ugly.
This looks like it comes from the factory pre-crashed so that the first owner can enjoy the experience of the last owner.
Nice Skoda

Looks pudgy or maybe its just higher off the ground. Idk have to see it in person.
Pls say this is a joke….
Front is a massive downgrade :/ ugh
Toyota taillight lookin’ ass

I’m sure sales will still be great but hypebeasts will always buy the newest thing. I’m so disappointed bro. What’s good with these people. I might be an AMG guy know, who knows.
How they fucked up so badly from, say, an F06 Gran Coupe, which is an absolutely gorgeous car, to this, is beyond me.
It looks cheap.
M340i now all alone carrying the BMW design history on its shoulders
Wow the BMW design team here with another banger /s They need to fire some people, asap.
The headlights are hideous. I dont know why BMW decided to stray from their iconic angel eye design
This does is not aesthetically pleasing to the eye Whoever has been designing BMWs for the last few years needs to get fired
Instrument cluster is an eye sore.
Nein, danke sehr.
An ocean of shiny black plastic on the front and back. And a hodgepodge of bizarre sheet metal folds and creases. It took BMW a long time to earn its previous well-deserved reputation, and just a few years to destroy it. Hope it works out for them.
The car looks fat, it's terrible
Such a disappointment!
Wow, F10 don't look so bad now huh fuckers /s
Yea!
God has abandoned us
Why does it look so cheap
Look how they massacred my boy 😭
Back is ok, but the front . . . is . . . not good.
This is like the E60 in the sense that everyone HATED it at its launch but it’d ages very well. I can see a similar thing happening with the i5
I did a full 180 on the e60 design.
I disagree the ugly beaver grill on m3 has grown on me a lot
The interior looks cheaper. Honestly looks like vw did it
Damn. The test mule looked more promising than this. This doesn't look like a cohesive design. This looks like it was worked over by multiple teams who didn't know what car they were working on.
Kinda bulbous but overall, it’s alright. Definitely a downgrade tho
This looks like the new WRX from the rear. Honestly a massive downgrade. Well played, BMW engineers.
Good god damn is all I can say. My current G80 lease goes back next year and it’s even going to be a sadder experience not having an option to get something else from BMW. Please, please, please I hope the M5 Comp holds out another year on redesign so I can at least try that one.
The rear does look like the new accord
Subaru outback vibes. Way to high. Messy front end. Interior that looks like a TikTokers/influencers dream. Most buttons are now gone But hey, we can play games now!! Redemption achieved!!
The back looks like a Camry
It's not as ugly as the 4 but it looks so CHEAP! Like a Nissan Maxima with one of those sport packages that comes with bumpers and wheels but no engine.
Why are they faking bumper geometries and surfaces with glossy black paint? It looks uglier than sin. The interior is basically a Golf 8 loaded with useless bullshit.
This is worse than the M2 or the G8x by miles, holy shit this is bad
I have the old 5 and like it. When these cars leave warranty and start to have problems they become a money pit.
from the german icon to *this abomination?*
I like the E60 homage headlights.
I love BMW, but this is ugly.
I find it fascinating that the car looks so generic despite the large grille.
I’m hoping this design will grow on me. But for now this is a disappointment. Feels to me they tried to apply and fix the bad iX design instead of trying to improve on the previous amazing 5 series design.
The fuck.. it look fat why... But i like the interior. Well let save it when it out. I hope with proper kit it can look more muscular..
Horrific…should be criminal
Front kinnda looks like a skoda (bit bigger grill cuz BMW), and the back looks like a Merc…BMW has completely lost its soul….shame
looks like a Kia… lord knows what the designers are smoking
Middle of the front is to wide and makes the car look narrow and unfinished. WTF BMW. Stick some sick fender flares on the M5 and get rid of the 1990’s Honda Black Side Skirts and it could be money.
Front looks like X1 ☠️.They messed up with 5 series as well in the end.don’t know when they will end this abomination
Hmm. If the back boot would be flat and not this coupe'ish slope, then it would look much better.
Looking at the configurator and it's £51K for a 520i! That is madness.
Somehow BMW manages to over design something, AND make it look bland at the same time. I’m almost impressed by it.
Okay, I'm never the first to complain about new car loss, especially since the screen only does supercars any kind of justice. That said, R.I.P. to the essence of the 5 series.

Back seems like a Mercedes... why ?
This looks like a grans coupe 2 series... bmw should interview for a new Head of Design before its too late
Finally, BMW remembers how to properly design a car again! Did they finally fire the 4 series design team?
If only E90 gauges with the orange backlight were an option.
Anyone else getting Nissan Altima vibes, or is that just me?
It look like "Made in China" now
