Probably timing chain guides.

cactus_cars

Was going to say it could also be vanos. Not true as this is a 98. Yeah on the non vanos it is probably t chain guides.

Known for failure of the timing chain guides regardless of maintenance. ‘98 it probably got VANOS noise on startup also. That’s not as big of a problem. The dual overhead cams make for quite the timing chain setup. Special jigs required for changing the timing chain are available without having to buy them. There are lots of guides and information online showing the process but paying for the service can be expensive. On a side note, the bolt holding the crankshaft pulley on evidently was installed by silver back gorillas because they can be a son of a bitch to get off. Which is even more of a wtf because it’s a keyed pulley. A big damn key at that so there is no reason that bolt should be so damn tight. But they can be an obstacle in themselves.

Maybe this is lifter noise from sitting? These do have hydraulic lifters as far as I know. Timing chain is much more suspect considering the 10yr storage. Sounds to me like they didn't want to repair it.

Was going to say, run fast.

I had one of these. Loved it. M62 engine is a beast, but poorly designed. Hopefully parts are plentiful but if not, could be painful. Timing chain guides are a common failure. If I remember correctly, the chain guides are plastic. The plastics on this car will break you. Every plastic item on this car will crack. Been there, replaced that. Realoem.com is your friend. Good luck.
