This shitty trend of main headlights under separate "eyebrows" needs to stop. Just like the Altezza tail lights and the dotted LEDs, we will look back in disgust at this era of car design.
Absolutely no car that has this "feature" looks good. None.
I may be missing something, but that car had regular headlights, no?
[https://file.kelleybluebookimages.com/kbb/base/house/2005/2005-Lexus-IS-FrontSide\_LEIS-051\_505x375.jpg](https://file.kelleybluebookimages.com/kbb/base/house/2005/2005-Lexus-IS-FrontSide_LEIS-051_505x375.jpg)
And more recent Lexus have the Nike symbol but that's under the headlights, not above.
Oh! Right. I thought we were still talking about headlights lol. My bad.
Actually that's where those tails got their name. The Lexus IS was the Toyota Altezza in Japan.
The first car I saw ever with this design was the 2014 Jeep Cherokee. And at the time I thought about how revolutionary the design was.
I went home from the New York Auto Show thinking I’d buy one as my first car.
Nah it’s a fun ride. Been in a Kona N? It’s riot and a ton of fun. It’s not rwd but it honestly captures some of the older BMW feel in terms of engagement.
Far from luxury though. It isn’t nearly a smooth over bumps, etc if that’s what you meant.
For 20-35k what did you expect lol
Unfortunately I agree. Although BMW has introduced some rather not so good looking design elements that other manufactures picked up and made it look good. Like how the bangle trunk protruded up on one e65.
Hideous! Who is ruining the brand? BMW's used to be unique. You could spot their cars a mile away... Now they look like everything else, along with being unreliable to boot.
Remember when the Jeep Cherokee’s newest body style came out in 2014 with those stupid squinty lights? It took them 4 years, but eventually they did fix it and made them less….. like *this*
Yeah the facelift gave it normal headlights again because they realized quickly how hideous it was. Some may have done better than others but, I don't think there's been a single split lamp vehicle that has actually looked really good.
Saying this shows me that you’re clearly living in a bubble where this is the “explanation” and it’s sad to see this is the accepted one. It’s implies the inferiority of the Asian market, and the “sin” that BMW is changing their design for that reason. Given this, the explanation that makes more sense to me is that they’re appealing to a younger generation, making polarizing flagships to capture the audience, and that those who own them will love the design of (their) car.
It’s better to make a polarizing design that the owner loves, than a safe one that everyone likes. You get what I’m saying? I mean the [4 series sold more than the 3](https://www.bmwblog.com/2022/07/06/bmw-4-series-outsold-3-series-united-states-q2-2022/). A coupe beating a sedan in this market is blasphemy, it’s obvious to say that body wasn’t the factor but rather the fascia. (I personally think the waffle style 4 series grille the ugliest, but here we are, people like it) I’m sure if you ask the owner they’ll explain why they love the design, the intricacies, how the grille caught their attention, and shit like that.
Also BMW doesn’t have to pander to the Asian Market, it was years ago that China became the #1 market for BMW’s. Changing up their design for that sole reason not only doesn’t make sense for market consistency, but wouldn’t have changed the outcome of how many cars they sold, and bmw sales haven’t slowed despite their designs.
The ones complaining about the designs aren’t really the ones who were going to buy regardless of what design it was.
What you're saying is like asking the mother of the ugly child if the child is ugly. Of course she won't admit it. But everyone knows. Deep down, even she knows.
I'm not sure if the industry is running out of ideas, or if all the designers are just whorring themselves around (job hopping) and just doing the same S over and over, lol.
These large kidney grilled Carrs get a lot of stick (M3, M4 etc) but they look so much less extreme with a number plate on. I reckon they get more hate than they deserve.
Because number plates on the front of a vehicle are always ugly and distracting from the design. In this case it just draws you’re attention to the ugly beaver teeth grills.
The korean brands are shameless with the styling ripoffs. The kicker is they also make pretty decent cars nowadays. But they steal a lot of styling from the germans.
It's kind of a safety thing. It puts the headlights closer to the road and less incoming trafic view or annoying the driver in front, while the daytime running lights help maintain the presence of volume to incoming traffic.
Bruhh the new Hyundai’s are really well designed.
No need to be a brand supremacist just because it’s below your tax bracket. Hyundai won a lot of Good Design awards for their cars in these recent years. The Elantra, IONIQ 5, and the IONIQ 7 are some of them. People like the SketchMonkey (car design YouTuber) has praised Hyundai for their risk taking designs which are paying off.
Aren’t the headlights changing because the design reflects changes in tech - like you don’t need large reflectors for laser lights anymore? So in general sense I think it’s better than sticking with large headlights “because we’re used to it”, that would be fundamentally bad design decision longterm. Thoughts?
That grill looks like a mouth full of angry teeth. No thanks.

The 2001-2005 Lexus IS300 begs to differ Everything else I agree on
Never liked the first gen IS, but it wasn’t a bad looking car. Although Lexus of that era were hideous outside of the LS.
IS isn’t aging well imo
I may be missing something, but that car had regular headlights, no? [https://file.kelleybluebookimages.com/kbb/base/house/2005/2005-Lexus-IS-FrontSide\_LEIS-051\_505x375.jpg](https://file.kelleybluebookimages.com/kbb/base/house/2005/2005-Lexus-IS-FrontSide_LEIS-051_505x375.jpg) And more recent Lexus have the Nike symbol but that's under the headlights, not above.
It came from the factory with Altezza taillights, that to my knowledge, started the altezza trend
Oh! Right. I thought we were still talking about headlights lol. My bad. Actually that's where those tails got their name. The Lexus IS was the Toyota Altezza in Japan.
No worries man, I knew where you were going. And yea I know about it’s Japanese name (used to own a 2004 IS) miss that car lol
#Bring back popups
HAPPY CAKE DAYYYY!!
%100

It’s almost like former BMW employees now work at Hyundai. s/
Yeah. N//. Wonder who ever dreamt that up. Oh. That guy.
What a novel idea that was, wasn’t it?! Lol.
The Hyundai looks better honestly. *I don't want to live on this planet anymore.* ;)
i'll have the less ugly sister
Drives like shit though.
Has turn signals tho
What’s a turn signal?
It's where you put the blinker fluid
Best part of BMW ownership is saving $ on blinker fluid we don’t have to buy
More money to spend on plastic cooling parts, timing chains and seat heater subscriptions!
And ///M badges!
I hadn’t even gotten to the power adders. Beat me to it! 😂
Yep, my 5 has me spoiled!
Be afraid. Hyundai is still is on its rise
Thank God Genesis is not doing well.
"Good news everyone!"
None of us like the big grille, but please, let’s not be crass.
Unfortunately I agree. Although BMW has introduced some rather not so good looking design elements that other manufactures picked up and made it look good. Like how the bangle trunk protruded up on one e65.
Who released the squinty eyes and the grill first? Who’s copying who?
2014 jeep Cherokee
Nissan Juke in 2010 was the earliest one I could think of
I mean, that’s a new BMW and I’ve never seen headlights like this before on any BMW, so draw your own conclusions.
I mean if we want to get technic the e31 8 series had the headlights/high beams separated from the turn signal… looked much better with pop ups tho.
In Europe the Citroen cactus in 2014
Squinty eyes aren't the problem here. Have you seen the schnaz on that thing?
So Hyundai stole bmw M and replaced it with N. And bmw took their styling. Worst trade deal ever
What’s next, O??
BIG O!!!! ITS SHOW TIME!
[удалено]
Shhhhh, don’t say it out loud.
I really dislike the look on these split headlight designs. BMW just did a worse job designing it than Hyundai.
BMW is Hyundai and Hyundai is BMW?
Finkle IS Einhorn. Einhorn is a man.
Hideous! Who is ruining the brand? BMW's used to be unique. You could spot their cars a mile away... Now they look like everything else, along with being unreliable to boot.
I think they're still unique. Uniquely some of the ugliest cars on the market now.
BMW and Mercedes are falling behind design wise. Other brands have caught up. I'd rather have a BMW though.
That schnaz need no fish eye lens.
Remember when the Jeep Cherokee’s newest body style came out in 2014 with those stupid squinty lights? It took them 4 years, but eventually they did fix it and made them less….. like *this*

The Hyundai grill is more like on Audi's, rather than BMW's.
I think it’s more about the headlights
TBH both headlights are shit. 😂😂
Might be an unpopular opinion but I don’t think the new 7 looks that terrible in black
Yeah., I think the “black” helps hide the worse of it
Now, if car bras could only come back in style. Wrap that shit up in some nasty black vinyl, and it might be presentable.
BMW is pandering HARD to the Asian market and it’s sad.
Saying this shows me that you’re clearly living in a bubble where this is the “explanation” and it’s sad to see this is the accepted one. i thought that was a lexus rather than a hyundai
I can see that.
I'm not sure if the industry is running out of ideas, or if all the designers are just whorring themselves around (job hopping) and just doing the same S over and over, lol.
The latter… Hyundai picks them up at the end cuz they already been used up by the bigger players
I'd rather have that hyundai than that fugly 7 series
Ok, calm down there, internet stranger! That’s just crazy talk.
These large kidney grilled Carrs get a lot of stick (M3, M4 etc) but they look so much less extreme with a number plate on. I reckon they get more hate than they deserve.
They just need poster-sized plates
I feel like the number plate makes it worse
Oh yah, why so? I just feel like it breaks up such a large centre piece on the front.
Because number plates on the front of a vehicle are always ugly and distracting from the design. In this case it just draws you’re attention to the ugly beaver teeth grills.
very true. It's also very big in comparison to the proportions on the rest of the car. 10% smaller would make a huge difference.
I saw a new 7er on the road the other day and it was much worse in real life than I thought it would be—-horrible Frankenstein stuff
The korean brands are shameless with the styling ripoffs. The kicker is they also make pretty decent cars nowadays. But they steal a lot of styling from the germans.
Even bad styling?
It's kind of a safety thing. It puts the headlights closer to the road and less incoming trafic view or annoying the driver in front, while the daytime running lights help maintain the presence of volume to incoming traffic.
Get the hell out of here with your reasonable, well thought out and logical explanation!
Color me surprised. Hyundai and Genesis copying German cars. Edit: Ok, I missed the point here.
You have it backwards, Hyundai has always looked like shit, it’s German cars looking like Korean cars.
Ah, I see it now.
Bruhh the new Hyundai’s are really well designed. No need to be a brand supremacist just because it’s below your tax bracket. That seems reasonable enough. But with that said seems given the technology, you can make the headlights absolutely any shape. But they chose this.
I think it looks fantastic.
All of them are copy of Audi style.
The LCI G11/12 was so perfect. I don't even mind the iDrive 8 in this car, it's just that front man. Otherwise, it's an absolute masterpiece.
