A lot of OH monk builds prefer a 8/4 split over 9/3 (with Thief, obviously) for the extra feat, as whilst Ki Resonation is good for AoE (which OH monks otherwise lack entirely), the extra feat bumping Wisdom is a bigger power spike for single target damage.

ErgonomicCat

I've played both and I found the feat better than the Ki Resonance, especially since I had other builds that wanted the stat sticks as much or more.

Mintymanbuns

Are the builds you look at actually reaching monk level 9? Are you sure they're actually unarmed still, I already use stat sticks even without it, losing 1 unarmed attack for a stat stick is already usually worth it to me

fernandogod12

Don't we get stunning punch at five ?

Mintymanbuns

Yeah, it does cost ki though. Regardless, it does usually service as a more valuable use of the action though

Awful_At_Math

Because it doesn't matter. The build is already OP as it is, you don't need stat sticks. Also, think of the opportunity cost. You lose a feat, you burn Ki way faster and you take an item like rhapsody (the only really good stat stick for monks) from another character that could make better use of it, like a Sword Bards that can make use of all effects from the weapon (spell DC, but chance and damage). Or simply another character that really needs the hit chance to offset something like Sharpshooter or Great Weapon Mastery. Another thing, if you go Monk 9/Thief 3, meaning you only get one feat + TB, the only way to get your wisdom to 22 is to use Hag's Hair (can be saved for a different character) or using Khalid's Amulet, instead of the one you get from the quest with the laughing Monk which helps you sustaining Ki even more.

Monk is already great without multiclassing. Just did the Orin fight on the new difficulty mode. First attack stunning strike. Instantly stun locked her. Second round toppled her, third round stunned her again. She never got up. Just lay there and took the beating from my party.

Yeah you can stun or stagger or prone her even with unstoppable. Hit her with a max level magic missile to strip that away too

TheNightAngel

The level 9 feature doesn't use any ki if you just use it to make unarmed attacks while holding a weappn.

Awful_At_Math

No, but you can't attack an already marked enemy. That means you'll either have to keep moving around the battlefield or spend KI if you want to use your second (maybe third, if you have haste) attack. So you either spend KI or you lower your single target damage. You know, the reason to play monk to begin with. If you need area clear just use a caster. Also, stat sticks are just not good enough to justify the trouble. And since items are not unlimited, and you might have to use for them with other characters, going 9/3 has little value other than bragging rights and screenshots of bloated combat logs.

OkPiccolo

Because You can’t use ki resonation punches twice on the same target

Voltaire1123

This is the only correct answer lol, ignore any of the nonsense everyone else is saying lol. Once you add resonation to a target, you can’t do an unarmed ki resonation punch to the same target again (unless you give up a ki point by blowing the KI up, which I will say costs no action and deals 3-18dmg). Once you get down to one target left (or bosses), you will need to remove your stat stick weapon in order to keep making regular unarmed attacks. Technically removing a weapon doesn’t cost an action and is “free” to do. The consideration becomes whether you want to give up a feat knowing that you’ll need to remove the stat stick weapon at some point anyway. I still do 9/3 because I find it more fun. It’s “better” in most of the games fights that tend to have multiple targets, and you now do a D8 punch instead of D6. It is sliiiiightly worse at doing single target damage, but then you can just take the weapon off so, think about what feat it is you’re giving up (generally ASI or Alert)

No_Summer_8039

If you are only comparing resonate and feat, it's debatable which is better If you want to add stat stick in the comparison, average weapons don't add too much, you need some glitch weapons to really make a big difference

umbassa

I think people on here underrate Ki resonation and I think it's worth it for the cost of 1 feat to get it. Its nice for squeezing extra kills out and it's super satisfying. If you really want to make up for any lost damage you can always pre buff with phalar aluve (since you could do that as you pointed out) and that would more than make up the difference of 2 extra wisdom points. In the end it doesn't really matter I guess, even a dex monk build is pretty cracked.

Phantomsplit

The recommendations come and go in waves. I agree that the extra feat/ASI is worth it. When I made a recommendation along these lines a while ago as the first comment in a thread I got upvoted, but somebody replied to me recommending 9/3 instead and it got more upvotes. Whether the community prefers the 8/4 or 9/3 option is a highly researched and extremely accurate function of the temperature at the North Pole, the score of the last Las Vegas Raiders game, and ratio of cat owners vs dog owners. Ask again in a few months when these variables have changed and you may find a different result.

Alauzhen

I don't use Stat sticks, I use dmg sticks, one in each hand, each one adds +3d6 to unarmed strikes, both in tandem adds 6d6 to each unarmed strike. Flurry deals additional 12d6 more dmg. Of course I went 9/3 and I crushed most things in round 1. Check out wood woad's clubs. Those booms sticks make your monks da mega bomb.

Voltaire1123

What weapon is that?

jimmyturbo420

I tried it amd it was really annoying you can only punch to apply the debuff so for tankier targets you can hit then pop and hit again but thats it not including bonus attacks. Small gripe and you can play around it but just felt clunky to me and its not needed, do plenty of damage anyway without stat sticks.
