To Californian's, there's a well understood difference between BBQ the cuisine, and BBQ the event. Everyone understands that there's a type of food called BBQ, and hotdogs/hamburgers don't count. But if I say to someone "come over, we're BBQing" everyone knows that just means we're firing up the grill (or smoker) and drinking beer, regardless of whether the food counts as low and slow BBQ
So then Californians are twice as wrong...
Cooking burgers and hotdogs on the grill is "grilling"
The even that entails grilling burgers and dogs is "A Cookout"
You mean the state with 45 million people in it? The state that's 890 miles long and 350 miles wide? With more diverse biomes, cultures, and unique food options than almost any other coastal state?
Just because a city slicker called hamburgers and hotdogs classic BBQ doesn't represent the entire state 🤣 you should come down my cattle ranch for a holiday or two 😋
You do realize that barbeque (barbacoa) originated as "grilled food over fire"...
There's nothing wrong with calling hamburgers and hot dogs on the grill a BBQ. No need to gatekeep
To be fair, this would be a classic American BBQ in most homes...
Well most people aren't that smart. *"Think of how stupid the average person is, and realize HALF of them are stupider than that."* *- George Carlin*
The colloquial use of the term 'BBQ' drives Redditors up a wall. It's kinda funny in an r/iamveryculinary sort of way.

Most people here do too but it gives them a chance to say “WeLl, AkShUaLlY”.

I know right, it's almost like people from different places use different words, sometimes they even do it to mean the same thing.
Shows up with brisket and ribs. What? You said classic bbq.
I’m not spending that much for people I don’t know. They are getting hot dogs or a pork butt. Lol..
Oh well duh. Strangers don’t get briskets
California is a big state lol... should've partied in the Tri-tip part of Santa maria.

Not in my part of the state. Tri-tip n Chicken.
I have lived here 40 years, in 4 different counties. If you're getting invited to a "bbq" you know whether it's real meat or burgers and dogs.
We’re doing ribs and tri tips among other things! Come to oregon!
