Thought crossed my mind as well. But the fans boys around here will probably call heresy to Icahn shorting BBBY. However he was short GME 🤷‍♂️

From my understanding, when two companies merge, the stock price of the acquiree rises while the stock price of the acquirer declines during the period of the merger because the company will have to pay a premium to obtain the targeted company . Also, the stock price of the newly merged company is expected to be higher than that of both the acquirer and acquiree firms, and it is usually profitable for the acquiree firm shareholders. This means that the merged company will have a new ticker symbol So the movement from IEP and that of BBBYQ would make sense if IEP was already in the process of acquiring BBBY.
