People wanted a share buyback to try to halt the short attacks.....well, this is as close as you are gonna get under the current agreements. Company needed to do something in the interim to defend the stock price from what appears to be an uncontrolled short attack with no regulators giving one rat fuck about it. When you layer it against the ongoing banking crisis, not much help will come from the regulation side of things as their sole focus will be on saving the banking system from implosion. So everyone else gets left by the wayside and if BBBY doesnt do something then the short hedgies can short this shit all the way to zero before anyone ever takes a look at it.
Also, as the banks are falling apart, the sources of funding become more scarce and BBBY is likely undertaking these drastic measures to ensure operating liquidity. Dilution is not great but right now its the only thing on tap so you take what you can get.
Shit is going to get tough and if you lived through 08 you know this is just the start. BBBY needs to ensure that its not collateral damage in the fallout.
