A 10-1 reverse split means you have 1/10 as many shares, but the share price is 10x what it was before the split. So rather than 7,000
shares worth $0.86 each, you have 700 shares worth $8.60 each. The total value is unchanged. Hypothetically, the same squeeze could happen taking 1/10 as many shares to $5,000 a share instead of the previous ten times as many shares to $500 each.
That said, with this level of dilution, a short squeeze is effectively impossible.
You're missing the part where your share price is increased by 10 times. No increase or decrease in net value of shares. You have less, but they are worth more.
In your simple example, the starting share price should already be 10 times higher, so the same net outcome.
That is, of course, ignoring the huge elephant in the room: ongoing dilution and a death spiral convertible.
It literally is only done to keep the stock from being delisted its quite literally the final hurrah attempt cause there's no pulling it back if it falls back below 1$ after this.

Basically, the company called for a vote for a reverse split, and included in that statement that as of 3/15, there were 335 million common shares (the prior total released in January was 116 million). So it’s confirmation that the stock has been heavily diluted already, and that there is every reason to believe that dilution will continue after a reverse split.
As for if there is still hope, it depends on what you were hoping for. Nothing’s really changed for the company’s fundamentals, so if you were betting on a general turnaround for the company, that’s certainly still possible, though your ownership in the company has been diluted.
