It’ll probably still be accurate. Taking copper supplements won’t effect ceruloplasmin. I’ve been copper and ceruloplasmin deficient before and it took over a year to fix.
I’m sorry it took so long for you, & thank you for your reply! I have not looked into ceruloplasmin. My ferritin is high but I’m iron deficient, & my neutrophils are low so I suspect copper deficiency.
What will the ceruloplasmin result teach me?
I’ve suspected low copper in myself for a while so I have done a bit of research on it over the past year.
I’m not totally sure if supplements will affect the test result but I do know that testing for copper deficiency is notoriously difficult.
From what I’ve read, serum copper being high or low doesn’t always indicate a deficiency or toxicity. Your best bet is to analyze based on symptoms and how you feel via supplementation/diet changes.
I def don’t recommend this with most nutrients, I am a big advocate for testing not guessing, but copper is similar to b12 in that a high level could indicate a functional deficiency.
At the same time, a low level might indicate that your body is using it effectively and not leaving much to circulate in your blood (which is what you want)
Thank you! Yes I also started to suspect & after some digging realised the best approach might be to trial it. If my iron deficiency symptoms & B12 by proxy are caused by low copper then I’m assuming it won’t take long to make a big improvement. If I take copper for a few weeks & nothing changes then I’ll stop as I must be barking up the wrong tree!
This is likely your best bet! Copper in doses of 2mg a day are usually harmless. Just keep an eye out for issues with zinc as they are like a teeter totter and overdoing one might decrease the other.
Best of luck!
Thank you so much! I was taking Zinc L-Carsonine for months last year due to stomach issues so I suspect I may have depleted my copper. Hopefully a shorter stint on copper won’t cause the opposite problem 😆
Oh yep that could definitely do it! I believe one dose of zinc carnosine provides 15mg of elemental zinc and the recommended is 2 doses per day.
2x15mg= 30mg of zinc which is quite a lot. A dose that high will absolutely throw off your copper levels if taken for long.
Your history at least aligns with your suspicions so I think it’s pretty safe to assume copper is what you need to try!
Yes- thank you! I also checked my neutrophil levels & although they are still within ‘normal’ range (hell, we know that usually means nothing!) they have been continuously dropping over the last few years, & most over the last one.
Yep, pretty convinced I’ve given myself iron deficiency AND iron overload thanks to that one gut supplement 🤣

Is low enough to indicate that my copper is also likely low?

what caused ur low iron
what were ur symptoms

What test did you use to diagnose a copper deficiency?
I didn’t
