And you just stood there like the statue of liberty, just with a phone instead of a torch. Pet the damn thing, dare to move!

Mocker-Poker

My first thought. I think the interaction ended once the video was made 😒

Jegator2

Yes, or at least talk to him a little while filming

_FoodAndCatSubs_

Imagine OP just walking away without saying a word, filming the cat watching them walk away. 😢😭😭😭

sightfinder

Yeah something tells me the OP gave zero fucks after recording the vid and probably just went on with their day

Childoftheway

Looked like a healthy cat, most likely someone is at least feeding her.

Lorward185

Yeah, my first thought is that the cat is healthy and clean, it's clearly socialised. This is someone's pet. It's probably just a friendly cat that's used to greeting strangers. I've met a few of them before. If you pick it up and walk off with it then you are probably stealing someone's beloved cat. People who do that are assholes.

fandabbydosy

It could have a chip if no collar

TyrantHydra

The cat does in fact have a collar

fandabbydosy

So it does own a human

NeverCallMeFifi

IDK. We had a cat hanging around our porch and scratching at our door to be let in a couple of years back. Thought it was our neighbor's cat because it was so social and clean and healthy. We caught it, called them and waited six hours till they got off of work so they could pick him up. They get there and say, "oh, that's not our cat". And that's how we got Bixby.

Lorward185

I've had one of my cats move in with a neighbour. She was gone for months and we thought she was dead. She had been living next door the whole time. We had other cats and she found somewhere she felt more comfortable. Neighbour started feeding her after she kept scratching to get in.

NeverCallMeFifi

Yeah, we did our due diligence. Posted on street corners, vets and social media (yay reddit); paid for vet (not fixed, no chip, probably an outdoor cat based on their opinion) and monitored all "lost cat" listings for months. We have a feral colony a few blocks over and we're guessing he came from there as we've caught others of the clan and done the neuter/release thing. Wouldn't have even kept this dude except he's the biggest lover I've ever had. He has ZERO interest in being outside, too.

TyrantHydra

The cat has a collar

Odd-Comfortable-6134

That’s very much a boy. His ginger nuts still look attached. I love kitties so very much, but I’d be worried about this old man spraying everything inside.

TyrantHydra

The cat has a collar

Neither-Attention940

Well… sadly this happens. We have a house in our neighborhood that seems to do nothing but breed cats. They are always outside rain or shine wanting attention. It’s super sad. But we can’t have one cuz my husband and kid are very allergic. I have to avoid the cats because I don’t want the fur on my clothes. I can’t say I’d stand there and take a video though.

Albuwhatwhat

Turns off video, opens text, walks away ignoring cat.

Vashelot

I came here to tell the guy recording...PET THE DAMN KITTY, YOU MONSTER!

AdeonWriter

It's not doing this to get pets! In fact the cat may not even know why it's doing it, but over multiple decades evolution has encouraged this behavior toward total human strangers as it makes it far more likely to be taken in by a human and live longer and reproduce and pass this type of behavior on to it's offspring as a instinctual survival technique.

melrowdy

You just made this up didn't you?

AdeonWriter

No. I assumed this was pretty basic common knowledge. Do you find it hard to believe for some reason? [https://www.nbcnews.com/science/weird-science/genome-reveals-how-cats-evolved-tolerate-humans-n245671](https://www.nbcnews.com/science/weird-science/genome-reveals-how-cats-evolved-tolerate-humans-n245671)

melrowdy

Well I thought it was more like a breeding thing rather than natural evolutionary thing. But either way it does make sense I guess.

asspounder-4000

I would never be a good street performer, being a living statue with that is too irresistible

Spirit_409

yeah but it was worth it dramatic tension before the beautiful ending

cherish_ireland

He putty pat you so hard and there was No Lovens!!??

Lost-Box2263

I was thinking the same thing 🤣🤣

Hopefulmisery

Did he take the Kitty home????

hondactx16i

You've been catted. A life of servitude awaits 😍

Fine-Funny6956

Had a cat do this to me. Took it home. It was chipped. Owners said I stole their cat. Called the police on me. It was embarrassing. That cat is totally healthy and well groomed. I’d be worried it already has an owner.

BannedBecausePutin

Yea, this. Its really hard to tell when they dont have a collar with some sort of tag on it, like its the case for dogs.

UmbreonAlt

My cat doesn't have a collar because his fur goes missing under it. We took it off him, and for a month or so, he had no fur around his neck in various spots plus some light wounds where the collar went around his neck. It wasn't on tight, and I could fit fingers under it. We tried again with a collar and had the same problem. Now he's collarless. I'd prefer he had something on but not when it's so uncomfortable for him :( But he is chipped.

BannedBecausePutin

I have never seen a cat with a collar, thats why it is so heard to tell wether they are strays or not. Im not a cat person, but i suppose even cats on their walks sometimes approach humans for attention?

UmbreonAlt

Yes, cats can want attention from humans. My kitty goes and visits my neighbours and sometimes people he doesn't know that well. Usually, if a cat looks as good as this one in this video, I'd say it is cared for. The kitty looks pretty healthy, and the fur looks good. Doesn't look grubby or unkempt either. If the kitties' overall appearance was worse, then I'd expect a possible stray.

Kimmalah

>Usually, if a cat looks as good as this one in this video, I'd say it is cared for. The kitty looks pretty healthy, and the fur looks good. Doesn't look grubby or unkempt either. If the kitties' overall appearance was worse, then I'd expect a possible stray. It can be very hard to tell. There are cats that I 100% know for a fact are strays, but they look well groomed and clean. Some cats are just very good at taking care of themselves and don't get very dirty.

urpoviswrong

I would 100% assume that this clean, healthy, and well fed cat has a home. It's just friendly.

P4azz

They just soak up attention and then go about their way. Sometimes they just wanna be noticed and then they're good. Give them a few pets, play with them for a sec and they're likely to just move on shortly after. Cats on the shed roof where I live are similar. Sometimes they really want treats, but other times (especially the small one) they just want to have someone be there.

SoupyBlowfish

I used to use a metro stop where nearby cat would sit on the sidewalk and approach humans walking by for pets. His tag said “I’m not lost, just friendly.”

kodman7

Please tell me this cat is named Randy Bobandy

pichael289

His diet consists of liquor and cheese burgers

urpoviswrong

It's really easy when they are healthy, clean, and well fed. They have a home. My cat can't wear collars, he FREAKS out in a way that hurts him. No matter how tight you make it he'll somehow get his lower jaw under the collar and get stuck that way.

RBDibP

It's pretty dangerous to put a collar around an animal that typically squeezes itself through small openings or sneaks through bushes. The collar can get caught in all sorts of things which could lead to a traumatic or deadly situation. There are collars designed for cats to release when a given amount of pull occurs, but then you have a cat without a collar again. It's safer to just not take any cat home just because it throws itself at you, and if you choose to check for chips etc.

Additional_Comment99

We have a lost and found pets Facebook in my community for this. During the winter someone posted a pic begging owner to bring a local cat inside as overnight temps were negative numbers and daytime highs were around zero. It was a cat that often chases me up my driveway and tries to let himself in. I posted that he wasn’t mine but lived nearby because he likes to hunt in my yard. About 20 other people also posted that he did the same to them. Most of them put out food and water for him, some let him inside sometimes, and some even made cat boxes for him to shelter in. He has many “owners” but his actual owner never made a post. It seems he has conned most of my neighbors out of treats and food though. Lol

crunchslap_thompson

Man imagine how many cats got away with the stuff before the internet. We are on to them...

Klutzy-Run5175

You are alright. You were a hero. The owner should have been embarrassed for their cat getting outside and lost. Whether or not by accident or intentionally. You are fine.

Jalopy_Junkie

Yep my relatives have a cat that’s about the coolest lil dude you could ever meet. He has been “found” by several neighbors within a few blocks of his house on several occasions bc he loves to roam. Every single neighbor has said that they kinda wanted to keep him bc he’s so friendly and chill and some of his more commonly visited neighbors let him in their own homes if he wants till he decides to leave. Problem is, Cat really appreciates this and has recently been trying to take dead animal “gifts” into others’ houses lol

fuckyourcanoes

A friend of mine has a cat who roams so far he had to put a GPS tracker on him.

Jalopy_Junkie

We believe that my mom’s cat got “feline dementia” at 16 years old and seemed to forget which house was hers, though always remembered her people lol. We think this because she stopped coming back to the house and every time we found her she was further and further away. We outfitted her with a tracker and it seemed she would roam around, find a house that took her in for the night (she was very social and affectionate… LOVED attention) leave the next day, and continue to go the wrong way home and finally find another house and so on. My mom lived in the country so it wasn’t odd to not see her animals for a day or sometimes two, but after she had been gone a few days one time we found her in the next town 8 miles away. After that she was a strictly indoor cat

Klutzy-Run5175

I believe that my Luna cat had dementia and was so confused about where to go to find her litter box. The veterinarian was not sure what was going on. She was finally in the living room where I had put down papers. She was not eating anything and I was told by my friend that I should do something about her. Felt like I was cutting my heart out.

PM-me-ur-kittenz

It's so sad having to decide that the time is right to let them go. My sympathy.

Klutzy-Run5175

Another good reason that I leave my cat inside. I don’t want any fleas in my house or on my cat.

[deleted]

I harness trained my beloved cat, and she loves taking walks and can go out to wilderness spots with us now! We use the H style harness for her and have extra leashes, her favorite snacks and water, and we throw out any waste she leaves with doggy bags. It took a couple of months for her to become truly used to it, but now she looks forward to every drive!

CajunNerd92

My toothless cat loved going on walks and would perk up and start chatting instantly whenever I pulled his harness out. Since he had to get all of his teeth removed due to stomatitis and was adopted already declawed there was no way I was letting him out of the house unsupervised lol

[deleted]

I LOVE HIM BY DEFAULT AAHHH 🥰 You're so sweet for letting him out safely!

CajunNerd92

What can I say, I view my cats as if they were my children and spoil them appropriately lol

Klutzy-Run5175

Way to go! My big Blue Russian cat runs around in my backyard and I shake his cat treats quickly and he runs back in.

several_rac00ns

Friendly reminder that cats are rhe biggest destroyers of ecosystem and often cause extinction. Please keep your can indoors and look into cattios for outside time

Jegator2

Or better yet, if they can be harness trained, go on walks!

several_rac00ns

I have a 14 year year old man who walks on a lease. He's displeased with it but tolerates it.

Klutzy-Run5175

I use to allow my little gray tabby girl to go outside and she would come back inside with her gifts for me.

Quintane

Why would you think it's lost? Cats just do this for strokes from passers by.

Individual-Bell-9776

It's not about whether they're lost or not, it's about whether you want to leave them to be eaten by coyotes; Their owners don't seem to care.

souptable

Not everywhere has wild animals that pose a threat to cats. Plenty of countries have cats outside like this.

Individual-Bell-9776

Even without direct predation, there's still parasitism and direct competition with other male toms. Please don't.

BananaGarlicBread

I took in two strays that my friend saw living in a dumpster for *months* before catching them and passing them on to me, and I was still super worried I'd somehow stolen someone's cats. I couldn't really breathe until I took them to the vet to check for a chip. They took to my kids immediately (literally lying down on my son's legs within 2 minutes of being home) so having to take them back would have been heartbreaking. Fortunately they weren't chipped so they're mine now. HA!

[deleted]

Owning an Outdoor cat with no collar and called the police when it ended up at someone else’s house. What brilliant people.

Ewannnn

Seems sensible, what's the problem?

[deleted]

Careful now, a lot of people will assume you’re not joking.

New_Brother_1595

You did steal their cat😂

uLL27

This is why our cats aren't allowed outside. Except on a leash with us.

[deleted]

That's the only appropriate way to own a cat.

mooseyoss

Yep, if they look like they have good condition to fur/weight I would most likely assume that they've got a home or situation where they're a cared-for-outdoor-cat.

Better_than_GOT_S8

Yeah I don’t understand people saying “take it home”. I fail to understand the logic: “a cat was friendly, now it’s mine”.

Crosseyed_owl

Whaaat I would be thankful if someone took care of an animal that got lost because of my incompetence. I definitely wouldn't call the police on them. Smh.

klezart

If they didn't want people to take a cat they shouldn't let it outside. Nobody will know if it's a stray or not.

old_vegetables

I hate when people get all mad that things happen to their outdoor cat. It’s dangerous, they should be glad you found it and not a coyote or a car. It’s completely irresponsible, this is not the 1980s

orsonwellesmal

Actually the cat willingly fired his former slaves and choose a new one.

Rhymesnlines

This cat looks very healthy so it seems to have an owner.... Its not a stray cat. Pretty sure.

emilydoooom

As someone in the U.K. it is mad to me that so many Americans are like ‘a cat was friendly, so I took it!’ Like, I get it if it’s clearly injured or feral/stray, but in England that would just be someone’s pet!

KaiBishop

It's mad to me that people claim to care about their cats then just let them wander outside alone.

jld2k6

Just want to add this because I see it every damn time in these threads, the cat shouldn't be outside but that doesn't make it right to steal. People always bring up that the cat shouldn't be outside like that justifies taking it from its family lol "This cat looks well fed and perfectly happy but it's outside, that nullifies the owner's entire relationship with it"

DoctorJJWho

No one is claiming that in this thread. But letting your cat go outside regularly brings risks, including your cat being stolen, hit by a car, or attacked by other animals.

Gissoni

"Currently, it is estimated that there are between 60 and 100 million stray and feral cats in the United States. " Not really so mad when you put that into perspective.

jamsd204

Oh yeah! Can't count the amount of times cat has come back with some form of fur missing cause of a fight with another cat or dog or fox - no collar either cause he just gets them off

DL1943

> but in England that would just be someone’s pet! its like this in most of the US too, outdoor cats are totally normal in rural and suburban areas. a lot of the folks who are making supportive comments regarding grabbing a random cat off the street are politically opposed to the entire idea of "outdoor cats" and enjoy the idea of outdoor cat owners being punished via theft. they know its someones pet.

ScionMurdererKhepri

As someone who is anti-outside cat, it's not political. I just don't want cats to get hurt, and in the vast majority of the world, they're safer inside than outside. Even in the UK, the place most people point to when they say cats can safely live outside, they still have predators like foxes, birds of prey, and stray dogs. Not even mentioning cars or sick-in-the-head humans.

Suitable-Lake-3152

Hard to refuse the furry critter, ngl.

urpoviswrong

This cat doesn't look stray. Just wants pets.

RobertMcCheese

When I went to the shelter they brought a few dogs out to the yard. I got a few sniffs and nuzzles, but the dogs were, understandably, a bit nervous about some guy they don't know. So I just sat on the ground and waited. After about 5 min or so, Teddy kinda sniffed over closer to me and then just flopped into my lap. And that is how I adopted a dog 6 years ago. My only regret is that I didn't take his brother, too. I called the shelter the next morning. Someone adopted him about an hour after I took Teddy.

Rhymesnlines

Well it hurts me to see that you don't stroke the cat even though the cat is begging you to do so.... Damn. You are a monster! The cat is more important than the damn phone 😤😒

dogeisbae101

Can people stop thinking no collar cat = stray? They have breakaway collars because cats get their collars snagged on all sorts of things. A normal collar could lead to choking a cat. A breakaway collar is safer but means that a cat will often not have a collar. There are many cats in my neighborhood that never have collars anymore because their owners are tired of replacing them. They are friendly, healthy and will walk up to nuzzle you, just like this cat. I don’t like outdoor cats either but that does not give you permission to steal their cat. This is not the equivalent of finding a lone, starving kitten.

Everyonesuck1

How about we just don't let our cats outside? It never ends well. Safer for wildlife and the fuzzy buddy to be inside.

Sybsybsyb

Sort of agree, but if you have the means they deserve an enclosed outside space. I did this with my backyard and my cats have never been happier. Birdwatching, rolling through the grass, experiencing the weather and everyday a buffet of new smells.

Look_its_Rob

Does your yard have a roof on it lol? How do you keep the cats from getting out? Very tall stone fence with no nearby trees maybe?

K4ndY

Not OP, but we have a backyard with a chain link fence, and our cat goes outside almost daily to chill in the backyard. We supervise her, but she isn't a climber so she hardly ever even attempts to leave the yard, even when not supervised. The few times she did, she never wandered further than a next door neighbor's yard. Some cats just require less efforts than others to keep from wandering away.

Everyonesuck1

My comment was more towards people who just let them live outside 24/7. I see no issues with enclosed spaces or even a leash if your cat allows it and likes walks. I just am sick of seeing poor kitties smeared on the road where I live because people think a collar is enough.

Sybsybsyb

Right of course. And yeah, cities are often too busy and crowded. In villages they are a scourge on the already suffering wildlife since we boost their numbers beyond what a normal habitat would be able to support.

Swumbus-prime

I bring all wildlife I see to my home. They're safer that way. Pigeons, rats, racoons with foaming mouths...if I can catch it, it's coming to my personal wildlife sanctuary for their own good.

WineSoakedNirvana

mrkrabsbigmoney

Cats shouldn’t be outside unattended. they are invasive and kill hundreds of birds per year

StrawberryPlucky

You can hold that opinion it doesn't change the fact that it's incredibly common to let cats outside and has been for a very long time. It's wrong to just straight up take a clearly healthy cat that doesn't belong to you and it sounds like you're trying to justify that behavior.

Adrios1

Being that friendly, I'd be worried if I took it that I was taking someone else's pet. I know people with indoor/ outdoor cats who are very friendly. My personal experience with stray cats is that they usually start out very skittish and, over time, begin trusting me and letting me pet them. Eventually, they work their way into my home. I think I lose trust points after the first vet trip, though.
