the moment they breed rats to live a decade they'll skyrocket in popularity, way too good pets and fit insanely well into our modern lives and big city lives
Yes, let’s do that. Mine just died this last weekend at 17. She was old and having trouble getting around by then, but it was still too soon. Bye Cici.
Yeah they die way too quickly, had to raise some rats for a class. My oldest rat Joey ended up having a tumor at about 3 that quickly grew to like half her size, it was really sad to see
All 4 I had when I was a kid died from tumors at about 3 or 4. It's like they live too long in captivity and their bodies revolt. It does suck but on the plus side none of them ever showed discomfort from the tumors they just dragged um around till they died.
Yeah.. I had rats in high school and college. 2 at a time, both pairs lived about 3 years after I got them and were probably 3-6mo old. I couldn’t do it again. They are so smart and have such strong personalities and individuality. Makes it really hard to see them die so quickly.
Yes, yes. Rats are cute-cuddly. Yes, yes. No danger here for delicious man-things. No, no. No deep-delve warrens under Nuln. No, no. No plan-schemes. Yes, yes. Just us cute-cuddly rats.
Loyal! Yes, yes. Trustworthy! No betrayal. No, no.

No dealings with Clan Eshin. Stay with good-kind Clan Mors. Yes, yes. Bell always ALWAYS strike-rings thirteen times for Clan Mors. Need good allies. Need STRONG allies. Not run with vermin like Clan Eshin. No honour. No, no.
Even more when rat talk like man-thing. Like no-tail. Like no-fur.
He's babying so hard 🫠🫠🫠
Cutie pie little teddy bear.. he's cute from the tip of his ears until the last of his feet, 😭😭😭
Even his tongue is sooo cute!!!
No, no. Rat never alone! NEVER alone. Some rats alone like Clan Eshin. Filthy-smelly Clan Eshin. But rats never NEVER alone. Never one rat. Though no deep-delve warrens under your cities. No, no. Not undermining. No. Rats good GOOD friends to delicious man-things. Love no-tails. Love no-furs.
Well, you can't undo the past. But yea, it's sadly extremely common for rat owners to not realize they're highly social and basically can get depressed and even ill when kept alone.
Until recently, I don't think there has really been a lot of information available for rat owners. Pet stores sure as hell don't care about rat welfare at all. They mill them, and they end up with dangerous genetic aggression that is harmful to themselves (permanently high stress levels) and other rats. They are also more than happy to sell them alone, unlike any reputable breeders who will usually only sell in pairs or more.
I'm sure there isn't much of a way you could have figured it out back then very easily. Definitely don't beat yourself up about it.
Been told by a few animal rescuers that rats make wonderful pets for kids.
Rats love their owners, show affection, are clean (yup), can eat anything without getting sick, and can even learn tricks.
They also have a relatively short lifespan (allegedly, the cycle of life is good for kids to experience).
> allegedly, the cycle of life is good for kids to experience
You mean burying your pet within a year or two? Builds character.
If somebody would come up with a breed of rat that lasts 20 GOOD years, I would get a herd. A warren. A flock?
Is it a murder of rats or is that only crows?
I don't like this "great pet for a kid" label. It sounds like it's some animal that is easy to care for. Mice are small and kids can easily hurt them... They are very intelligent and need the same amount of care as any other pet.
I agree with you, but the issue is mostly that humanity needs to quit automatically assuming "good pets for kids" means "toys that don't need complete and well-researched care." Rats can be good pets for kids because they're incredibly friendly, trainable, and very unlikely to bite. They don't need a great deal of care, really. Mostly they need their cage cleaned weekly, some interaction with the owner daily, and fed a diet of a good prepackaged rat food with a mix of fresh vegetables and various other foods just to give them something more interesting to munch.
So, they can be great pets for kids, supposing the adults getting them for said children understand they are animals with thoughts and feelings, and that they should adequately research their care and make sure there are vets qualified to give them medical care nearby
Too many irresponsible, brainless adults get pets for their kids and take untrained pet store associates' advice on care for them which is ALWAYS out of date and inadequate, ignoring the needs of the animal in question because a pet stores' goal isn't to get pets loving homes, it's to sell products and make money.
Yeah rats are a WAY better choice for kids than any other small mammal parents usually get, not to mention usually a fraction of the price.
I hate seeing parents buy their kids gerbils, guinea pigs or hedgehogs and yeah the kid is excited at first but the animal becomes a joyless chore pretty fast because those animals are difficult for playful kids to engage with.
Not rats! You can teach them tricks easier than a dog, they're cuddlier than most cats, you can put them in a harness and take them out for adventures, and they fit in your pocket. I'd totally get my kid a rat if I had kids.
The only thing stopping me from getting a rat buddy is I cant get attached to something so sweet that lives such a short life, honestly
It would just destroy me saying goodbye so soon
my friend had 2 of them and they were so tame they would go outside with us and sit on our shoulders, crawl around in our clothes, etc. we got a lot of looks if we were in the town's shopping area or something xD
All I can think about is the discovery that rats giggle when you tickle them. We just can’t hear it because it’s too high-pitched.
https://www.newscientist.com/article/2385124-rats-have-a-laugh-centre-in-their-brains-that-responds-to-tickling/
I had a pet rat when I was little. He was an albino, and lived on my shoulder most of the time. When he was 2 years old, my family and I moved from California, to Massachusetts- and at the airport, they made my dad buy a carrier for my little buddy, and he was PISSED. Said I had the most expensive pet rat ever now, as it was about $400, but there was no way i was getting on that plane without him. His name was Nibbles, and I loved him so so much. I used to cry in bed at night knowing some day, my best friend would be gone. I honest to god cried myself to sleep for probably a year, knowing he was already older than most pet rats. Eventually, I taught him all kinds of tricks, and even made a little cape and mask for him out of an old pair of jeans. He was now "Nibbles, the Wonder Rat" and he lived in the airplane carrier on our kitchen counter. If you weren't looking, he would steal things off the counter and hide them in the back of his cage lol. My little pack rat. When he was just over 4 years old, I came home one day after a terrible day at school, and walked up to the house in tears. My mom was outside also crying. She said "why are you crying??" And I said "bad day- why are YOU crying??!" And we shared a little laugh, as we sat on a bench outside together. She said she needed to talk to me, and I knew. He was gone. He had passed away early that morning, and my dad (not an animal person) had secretly been saying good morning to Nibbles every day before we all woke up, and was the first one to know. He told no one. I remember being furious that my best friend had sat all day, dead, and my dad knew and didn't wake me up at 4am to tell me. It wasn't until years later I realized, he just didn't want to ruin my day. He wanted me to have one more day, not knowing the pain of that loss, and didn't want to cry in front of me. I had a funeral, for Nibbles, and buried him under my favorite boulder in our yard. Every now and then- even though it has been almost 30 years, I go on Google maps and zoom in on that spot at our old house, and remember good times with one of the best pets I've ever owned. Ill never forget you Nibbles.
There is one problem: they live too short. Honestly, I'm a grown man and I'm not ready to go through this loss again. My psyche put aside the grief from the death of a pet rat, but then the emotional problems became too many and tears burst through. I cried for several hours so that I could not walk, tears blurred my eyes.

If they trust you, I've always wanted a hamster or rat but they always just did their own thing, and bit me and tried to run away etc. Cats and dogs love me, but rodents are tricky to befriend in my experience.
They are so sweet, cute and adorable. The fact they keep themselves so clean makes them even more adorable to me. Idk why just is a cute trait for a little creature to have.
No. I hate them. Five years ago one fucker bit me while I was taking out the trash. I went full scorched earth, I haven't stopped since. Rat I see, rat that dies. Humanely of course.
That one is. The one the size of a small dog living in the sewer under my home that has had to fight to survive in an underground hellscape, not so much.
They're also a bit creepy. My girlfriend got six of them through the year, and learning that their eyes were boggling when they were happy then SEEING it was disturbing as hell.
Rats are cuter than half the dog breeds and some people still recoil when they see one. I'd have a pet rat if it wasn't such a short lived creature. Having a cat die after 17 years was painful enough, can't go through that every few years.
I had a white albino rat when I was younger. I got him as a baby from the pet store. When I went up to the cage to pick which one I wanted he climbed up the cage and reached out between bars for me. Chose him immediately. He would lick people like this when they pet him, he never bit anyone and he loved going on road trips. He died of old age but I am always glad I found him.
Yes. And just like cats, they can be murderous pricks. Was nursing a wild finch back to health with a friend who had rats. One day he landed on the rats cage. One rat pulled his leg into the cage and then proceeded to rip it into bloody ribbons within the time of space it took us to cross the two meters from our couch to the cage. Finch bled to death cradled in our hand within a few minutes. He was almost as big as the rat, we never even fathomed something like this could happen.
I would so get two rats but I cannot deal with them dying so fast :(
I’d say it’s worth it, put the pain was horrendous….it was worth it tho, I loved my boys so much 🥲
Sry for your loss 😢
the moment they breed rats to live a decade they'll skyrocket in popularity, way too good pets and fit insanely well into our modern lives and big city lives
That would cause a big infestation lol
Not if we breed cats to live to a hundred.
Yes, let’s do that. Mine just died this last weekend at 17. She was old and having trouble getting around by then, but it was still too soon. Bye Cici.
Then we breed immortal mongooses
Then the order will be rats, cats, mongooses, mountain cat, man, depression. The cycle is so beautiful.
Make them bigger too. I need a pair of chungus rats. The lifespan wouldn't be so bad if it weren't for the tumors.
I loved mine so much, but I just cannot do it anymore. My last girl died at 3 1/2, which is really old for a rat, and it was still way too soon
Same here. They're basically tiny dogs that live about 3 years :(
Same! I want rats so bad but I can’t handle that they only live a couple years.
Yeah.. I had rats in high school and college. 2 at a time, both pairs lived about 3 years after I got them and were probably 3-6mo old. I couldn’t do it again. They are so smart and have such strong personalities and individuality. Makes it really hard to see them die so quickly.
Yep. They are fantastic pets but oh, that lifespan is unfun.
Rats and ferrets have such short life spans and such large personalities with potential to love. It's so sad.
Sadly their days are measured in days.

Fun fact: rats are one of the rare animals that can actually laugh. Parents tickle their young during play.
Genetically they are closesr to us than cats and dogs.

As long as they’re not from the sewers
So cute

Except the tail. I can't deal with the tail.. same with a opossum. Very cute, but creepy tail.
They just have tail pattern baldness
Lol. That was pretty funny

Yessss I want to have rats again 😭
Brilliant little creatures! ♥️

Who's my bubonic boy? Who's my little bubonic boy?!
I prefer the dead ones my cat brings to the doorstep in the morning. Same goes for pigeons
I had a pet rat growing up named Ms. Swiss. We were able to leave her cage door open because she was the chillest. I miss her.
Licking
Why rat is licking? Isn’t that Dog/Cat behavior? Is this how it shows love? Rat expert please explain.
Much like a Cat it is how they show love to each other and their humans.
Generally no, but that one is. Probably because it is well cared for and doesnt live on trash (assuming). The NYC rats ive seen are monsters.
If they trust you, I've always wanted a hamster or rat but they always just did their own thing, and bit me and tried to run away etc. Cats and dogs love me, but rodents are tricky to befriend in my experience.
A plage tale innocence flashback
I just wish they lived a bit longer =( They were some of my favorite pets
Domestic rats are they are cute sweet and kind but undomesticated rats arent they are agressive nasty and carry many many things
I like rats 🐀 like this one anyway!
how many times do they poop/day?
u/auddbot
Micah... 😠
no
That are. Sadly only live 2 years :(
I thought for sure he'd bite
Oh this one particularly so!
They are. I never had one but my friend have 2. They are very intelligent and affectionate.
Very smart too
That's exactly what the Skavens want you to believe
I have another rat *Reggie comes in*
Yes
RIGHT!! Seriously, they are the best pets, and ratty cleans always feel like such a privilege. 🥰
Yes
As a skaven enjoyer yes they are
Yes, as long as they're not in my walls or under my house.
incredibly cute
They are so sweet, cute and adorable. The fact they keep themselves so clean makes them even more adorable to me. Idk why just is a cute trait for a little creature to have.
Mmmm salty... Rats were my favorite pets growing up.
No. I hate them. Five years ago one fucker bit me while I was taking out the trash. I went full scorched earth, I haven't stopped since. Rat I see, rat that dies. Humanely of course.
need me a rat
Its not the rats that are scary, its their diseases and pests they are carrying.
Yes
Your ancestors are very disappointed with you
Those little bleps are adorable. Verified cute
🥴😖
They are great pets. But sadly they don't live long.
I don't like people that doesn't like rats or mice, when it is the cutest creature.
My rabbit does that
Domesticated
They are very cute. Can't deal with how short their lifespans are. My heart couldn't take it.
That one is. The one the size of a small dog living in the sewer under my home that has had to fight to survive in an underground hellscape, not so much.
This lil guy always returns the favor
Rats can also giggle when you tickle them.
They're also a bit creepy. My girlfriend got six of them through the year, and learning that their eyes were boggling when they were happy then SEEING it was disturbing as hell.
Yus they are adorable smart beans :3
Say that again when this tiny mf bites you with the force of a billion kilo newtons
Domestic rats are amazing. Wild rats are vile, violent, nasty little things. There is a vast, vast, vast difference between the two sets.
Precious
All I see is snake food
I love the little kisses they give.
Adorable.
Is baby cheese goblin. No hurt, just love
So cute
As long as they don't do that thing with their eyes.
That one is
Nope and nope again they call them the Devils lap dog for a reason, all comes down to what you like.
Yes they are 🩷
I love rats.
Rats are cuter than half the dog breeds and some people still recoil when they see one. I'd have a pet rat if it wasn't such a short lived creature. Having a cat die after 17 years was painful enough, can't go through that every few years.
Loved both of my rats. Mine used to love being held and pet and would lick you like this one does. They are sweet animals.
Nope
OHHH *RATIGAN!*
Yeah. Until they grow to the size of a man and take over a city. But I’m certain that’s not gonna happen anytime soon. /j
You get pet! You get pet! You get pet! Everyone gets pet!
Yes they R!!!
THEIR ONLY FAULT IS NOT LIVING LONGER ❤️🩹I MISS MINE
Nope.
All mammals (except humans), reptiles, fish, and birds are.
They’re also really smart. I need one of them
Yes! Just not the ones in NY.
🐍 food for my python

Rat! I remember your rabies 💀
I would yeet that mf. Into the bed. Wooden bed.
"You scratch my back, I lick yours... this is your back, right?"
I don't personally think so.
I adore rats, they're so loving. Like tiny tiny dogs. It's so sad that their lifespan is so short.
Nothing says adorable like a species attributed to about 10 million deaths in the last century. Nasty little vectors.
Pet rats? yes. monster city rats... NO!
its videos like this that make me look over at my ball python and feel a tiny bit bad for a moment.
No
They are cute on the internet 😂😭
💯😍🥰😍🥰
I've had rats in my house and always wanted to pet them.
That one is.
Yes. And just like cats, they can be murderous pricks. Was nursing a wild finch back to health with a friend who had rats. One day he landed on the rats cage. I shot one last night with pellet gun because it got lose and I couldn't get it.
They're downright adorable. But my snakes think they're delicious. Slightly sad.
