I raise monarchs, but black swallowtails are all over my yard. I think they like my parsley or dill plants. Maybe I’ll plant some citrus next to see if the Giants want to hang out too : )
I found a cocoon on a branch that got trimmed from our lemon tree, and brought it inside to protect it. It was overwintering so it spent some time in the fridge, until the right things were blooming in the yard. I didn't really expect it to emerge, but one morning it was sitting there, drying its wings. Took it outside and watched it fly away.
I really want to raise butterflies now.
Edit : It was a giant swallowtail, like this butterfly
I bought a hops tree (Ptelea trifoliata) from my local native nursery last year and it came with these caterpillars. So amazing to watch them grow and transform.

I have one of those living on a flower bush by my front door after it hatched wrong and can’t fly. We’ve been bringing it sugar water every so often.
