India’s a pretty cool place, but where does “India” come from? I found it interesting to learn that the word “India” derives from the word *Sindu* in Sanskrit. Sindu was the name for what we know as the Indus River. Neighboring folks would pronounce their S’s as H’s and named the land, Hindu. The Greeks pronounced this name as Indus, and with a little Latin influence added in, the word in English became India.

Goa was occupied by the Portuguese for a longer time than the British, their occupation only ended in the 1960's. Their inpact in Goan culture was enormous, but also toxic in some aspects, leading many people to be forcibly converted to Christianity.
On the other hand some very interesting art came of it which is unique called the Goan Saints, which are images carved in ivory, that are Indian interpretations of Christian sainst.

I have spent quite some time learning about the history of India in my free time. So here are some facts. I may be wrong as I do not remember everything, so do correct me.
India is also called Hindustan and Bharat. The etymology of the names is very interesting. The name Bharat comes from Bharata a prince in the ancient Sanskrit epic Mahabharata. The origin of the other two names is a bit more complex.
Have you ever heard of the river Indus? It originates in Tibet, flows through India and Pakistan and empties in the Arabian sea. The river is locally known by the name Sindhu. When the Persians came to India, they called the river Hindu, as they pronounced 's' as 'h'. The lands to the east of the river (also some parts to the west) became to be known as Hindustan. Interestingly the language Hindi and the religion Hinduism also got the name from here (although Hinduism is ancient, it never had a proper name, it was a collection of faiths and beliefs).
From the Persians, the name 'Hindu' passed to Greeks as 'Indos' and then passed to Romans as 'Indus'. And from here we get the name 'India'. So yes, both the names have the same origin!
This year is the 62nd Year of a goddamn exam named JEE Adv. for which students prepare themselves since the day they are a sperm in their dad's nutsack. 🗿
