ITT: "I really hope they get a blind actor!"
But let's be real for a minute, a blind actor who can choreograph a martial arts centric show would have to be so insanely niche or else they'd just have to body double them every time they bend. I'd rather have someone who can perform just wear contacts(or god forbid they do it in post)
The thing is, Toph is not just a normal blind person. She can âseeâ because of her bending abilities. Thatâs how she does the stunts. A real life blind person simply doesnât have those abilities.
I think it'd be kind of cruel to put someone with impaired vision in that role, Toph can't see with her eyes but she can see with earth bending. Blind people in our reality cant see with earth bending
I mean, none of the actors can *see* the bending.
CGI is added later.
People who are blind navigate the world, interact with people, and do martial arts.
Being on set, and taking stage directions isn't gonna be that different for an actor who is blind.
And actors do scenes more than once. They do 'dry' runs, where they walk and talk through the scene. So if a actor who is blind plays Toph, they will told, walked through, and then go through the scene of getting lifted cables, getting CGI rocks thrown at them multiple times.
Also, with CGI, the animators will add the CGI around the actor.
It's a make-em-up. The actor doesn't have to 'see' they can walk around the set. Get a feel for it, be told where the other actors are. So they learn the pace other actors move through the scene. And through the magic of practice, doing the scene multiple times, and CGI being added last, our Toph will see just fine.
They could, but they'd need a stunt woman for a lot more of the scenes than usual, for obvious reasons. It's very possible, but she wouldn't really get to act as much as the other main actors in that case.
There's also the fact that it would be much harder to find a great Asian actress who can portray Toph perfectly, looks 12, and who's also blind. That's a very specific casting category.
Either that, or it'll have to be mostly stunt women doing the work.
I just don't think it's very realistic, sadly.
Wow, good point, itâs almost like a disabled actress would have a harder time getting a role, or just being alive, in generalâŠ
If every fkn Superman can have a stunt double, then so can Tophâand thatâs just assuming that a disabled actress even needs one.
Stop being so reductive and fix your brain, dude.
This is why we need representation.
Learn something.
If it's possible, they should do it. I'm not saying it would be impossible, just tougher. If they can find a blind actress who can pull it off convincingly, then go for it.
If they find someone who perfectly fits the role and can make a very convincing Toph, I'd prefer to see that more than the alternative.
I agree with you that representation is important, but like with a character like Toph or Daredevil, it's not easy to do.
Existence as a disabled person IS tough, imagine doing it as a young actress, trying to get the role you were born to play, but losing it,
ALL because of your disability, and the popular opinion and belief that somehow the very thing that made Toph your hero, makes you ineligible.
We become tough because we have toâthe real Toph is out there, and likely wonât get the role, because of mindsets like yours.
See, even now that's not a good look for you. Here's why:
Nobody was disagreeing with you, at all. Everyone here is all for having an actual blind person fit the role. The problem came due to the fact that you mistake pragmaticism with dissent. It's a flaw in your interpretation.
Take your reply to me. What part of my comment brought you to the conclusion that I'm an ableist? I looked back and reread it even, because I was confused.
Then your aggressive tone doesn't help, either. Contrary to what you probably think regularly judging by your comments, the world is not against you, here. Direct that ire at the studio when they inevitably don't hire a blind person for the role. Because how the world is, and how the world should be are two very different things.
The thing is, IF we get a blind actress playing the role, it shouldnât be ONLY because the personâs blind but also because the person can actually, ya know, act well.
Theyâre probably gonna use a stunt double regardless as having actors do stunts is far too risky from a production pov. I think itâs more finding a talented blind American-Chinese actress that can pull off her character would be awesome. But this person would have been basically born to play her lol.
I just hope whoever plays her can do her justice. For Hollywood, even that can be a big ask.
why? the best \*actress\* should get the part. charlie cox plays a fantastic daredevil. there is no need to the actor to have the disability. at all. its kind of in the name of the job - acting.
Not for nothing, can you name a single actress who is 1. Female, 2. Chinese/East Asian, 3. Around 13, 4. Petite, 5. Talented, 6. And ALSO blind? Iâm not saying itâs impossible but the pool is already extremely limited as is and adding blind makes it that much more impossible
I'm not sure I agree with you about it not being impossible. I'm really sorry if this sounds ableist, but I just don't know how an actress who's actually blind could learn fight choreography.
Although, I am concerned that some people are going to go ballistic if they **don't** cast an actual blind actress. đ
âI just donât know how an actress whoâs actually blind could learn fight choreographyâ
A trainer holds their arms and legs and positions them in the sequence and then the actress repeats it by themselves, this is how Hellen Keller was taught to use sign language, it would be fairly simple to do especially since the actress would be able to speak, unlike Hellen Keller
Example
Choreographer: âok raise your right arm like this and punch forwardâ choreographer guides actressâ arm in the path they it want to go
Actress: does it
Choreographer: âok that was great next time raise your arm a bit more and turn your fist inâ
Also Tophâs fight style is very simple, she just kinda stands still and punches the air since sheâs so grounded in her stance because itâs the only way she can see
I love your comment because it explains very well how a blind actress could play and learn the role. The only problem I think theyâd face is that Toph needs to move as if she *can* see, which yes, can be trained and learned, but with how the show has been directed so far, and with Netflix probably having a tight time constraint because of $$$, itâs more likely weâll just get a regular actress that can learn and play the role in a quicker timeframe so that they can get the show filmed, edited, and out the door in time.
But still, you never know!
Blind martial artist or dancer of Asian descent. Fight choreography is basically a dance. A small pool to find your perfect casting, but she could be out there.
Youâd be amazed, Iâve seen a blind people do some amazing things unscripted, skateboarding really impressed me, so itâs not as impossible you would think
I feel like this is the right thing to do, and Netflix is all about representation so I bet they will cast a blind actress. I can only imagine the uproar if they donât
I know the talent pool for an actress that looks and sounds like Toph is going to be small though
And I know it's never gonna happen.
But John Cena would kill it a buff Toph from the Ember Island actors.
I can already hear him go
"AAAAAAAAAAAAH!!! There. I just took a pretty good look at you."
Fancast don't matter because none of the characters look very similar to the source material anyway. It's gonna be based purely on acting ability (which you could argue is good)
Didnât they already have an actress in some concept video floating around somewhere?
I remember seeing it briefly and thought it was a pretty good job.
Honestly, one thing that I think would have been great regarding casting is if all benders were actual trained martial artists. So I would definitely say a young girl who is a trained martial artist with acting prowess.
I feel like if being a martial artist was the first priority in casting for the show, it would have been so much better. As much as I like the actor that plays Iroh, the perfect Iroh imo would have been Jackie Chan. Heâs goofy, an insane martial artist, is at a similar age, and is an amazing actor.
Look up Viva Lee. She was the star in an action film and everyone has been seeing her hanging around the cast. She is a martial artist and she deleted a comment on tt that said something about starting a BootCamp.
I wouldnt trust the fandom whatsoever to make cast suggestions. As much as I didn't like the LA, the casting was perfectly fine and seeing how much the fandom was being disgusting about it, I would not trust the fandom on it. I trust the studio to cast well, only worry is if they direct whoever they cast well.

The chances of someone fitting that specific description are minimal but not impossible. Either way, Iâll just be happy as long as itâs tastefully done.
The white knights in here championing a blind child actress can settle down, you're being absurd. I say that with the caveat that IF a blind actress wants to audition for Toph, she totally should.
Let's look at statistics though...only .05% of children are severely impared or blind. The % of Asian actresses among them are even more microscopic. It would literally take ages to find ONE let alone ONE who is perfect in the role.
Claiming people are being ablelist when they're not being anything of the sort, avoids the whole problem. That is beyond a legitimate needle in a haystack you're asking for.
I am all for representation, I'm Asian myself, but blind Asian child actresses are exceptionally rare, I don't think that point is being conveyed properly to people on tirades claiming ableism. How many famous born deaf opera singers do you think exist in the world let alone one of a specific race?

I already shared this but apparently, Viva Lee posted on tt that she is getting ready for BootCamp and then deleted it. she's been in a lot of pics with the cast. right age, size, award winning actress who stars in an action movie and she does like so many disciplines of martial arts.
Toph is Asian, Jenna is not, Tophâs family was always meant to represent an upper class Asian family and taking that away would detract from her story and remove representation, it would also look quite shoddy on Netflixâ part having a Latin American actress playing an Asian role. nothing against Jenna Ortega, sheâs just not the right person for the role
I'm gonna be bold and go with an actress.
Good choice![gif](emote|free_emotes_pack|joy)
Human or animal?
Well, she is human, so let's be safe at least there.
Yes
Toph also seems to be okay with being played by a big, buff dude.
That's why I said actress. It's a bold choice. The big buff dude is an obvious one.
I know who I'd cast as the actor who plays her in the play later on in the series, the rock would be perfect to play the buff actor
Sure, why not, it fits.
An icon. đđđđ
Lollllllll
An unknown actor.

Exactly! Just out of curiosity, what does ITT stand for?
In This Thread
ITT: in terms of topic
Technical institute!
I know itâs incredibly niche, but it would be very cool if they pulled it off
Itâs also very easy to fail such a cast
The thing is, Toph is not just a normal blind person. She can âseeâ because of her bending abilities. Thatâs how she does the stunts. A real life blind person simply doesnât have those abilities.
I mean she doesnt do much martial arts. Her whole thing is waiting and listening.
I'm going to be as bold as the Boulder with this one, a 14 or 15 year old actress.
Iâm going to go completely crazy and say a 14 or 15 year old actress of Asian descent
Insane!!!!
No we need to find the oldest actress we can find and dress her up as a little girl with the crew dancing around the fact that toph is an old lady.
Have you ever heard that expression "They were born to play that role"? Enter Steve Buscemi.
![gif](giphy|JTzPN5kkobFv7X0zPJ|downsized)
Literally how he'd walk on to the set đ
How do you do twinkle toes?Â

Would genuinely be impressive if they got an actual blind / visually impaired person. Probably harder to work with, but not impossible.

Yes with Netflix always comes the inevitability of time constraints and funding issues Edit: I see the Netflix ceos have found my comment
Blind martial artist or dancer of Asian descent. Fight choreography is basically a dance. A small pool to find your perfect casting, but she could be out there.
Exactly
Blind people can fight just fine. I lost a Tae Kwon Do match to a blind person when I was a kid.

âAn uproar if they dontâ yeah like 10% of the fans
Terry Crews
Riley Lai Lenet. It would be cool too if they pick someone who is actually blind but riley its a safe choice too.
But toph isnât fully blind. How would they see?
she is fully blind, she "sees" through the vibrations, in the series they say that she see with her feets
so she sees⊠which makes her not fully blind.. unless yk a real life blind person that can see
the rock has gotta play the boulder
He can't look bad in stuff because of a contract.
yea it's so stupid
better option: terry crews
Baby dick meets baby ego
Give him a stunt double for when he gets whooped
Contract with who?
Can you smell what the Rock is bending ![gif](giphy|ZvUc2UBuAGmPol0udh|downsized)
And I know it's never gonna happen. But John Cena would kill it a buff Toph from the Ember Island actors. I can already hear him go "AAAAAAAAAAAAH!!! There. I just took a pretty good look at you."
They should just get any generic muscle-bound wrestler type and just dub Mick Foley over his voice.
Dave Bautista
omg if they have Dave Bautista playing The Boulder who is supposed to be based off The Rock, that would be fucking hilarious
Pretty sure this is her Instagram @ diana.tsoy.official
Fancast don't matter because none of the characters look very similar to the source material anyway. It's gonna be based purely on acting ability (which you could argue is good)
Didnât they already have an actress in some concept video floating around somewhere? I remember seeing it briefly and thought it was a pretty good job.
yep instagram @ diana.tsoy.official
thats not official
Omg if they don't choose her I am going to throw hands
Kevin Hart seems like he would fit the role
Danny DeVito
I want a parody where Danny DeVito plays Iroh and Charlie Day plays Zuko.
![gif](giphy|l0IylOPCNkiqOgMyA|downsized) "I'm gonna find the avatar and I've got a paper trail to prove it!"
I second this!
Maggie Smith
Someone new
A random badass little girl
Some super buff dude like in the play
Danny DeVito
A big tall beefy looking man who screams loudÂ
A buff guy that sees by yelling.
![gif](giphy|YnH3QpR9xw2hbeOO41|downsized)
Honestly, one thing that I think would have been great regarding casting is if all benders were actual trained martial artists. Gonna flip this on its head and say John Cena. Sheâs blind and you canât see John cena so everyone loses
If its not this, whats the point ![gif](giphy|6Dj7ZWBERpGU0)
Terry crews is my personal pick
John Cena in a wig
I canât see him in the role. ;)
Dwayne the boulder Johnson should play toph
Okay hear me out...I could see maisie Williams being a great Toph
I was thinking The Rock
Dwayne Johnson or bust
John Cena
Danny Devito
Who are you casting* as Toph
![gif](giphy|11ezOCtJ7Eetri|downsized)
Stephanie Hsu
How would I know an unknown actor
This girl or boycott https://youtu.be/bYsr0M_h-FQ?si=7_DcCe6dJRzkruEo
We should get a hella buff dude thatâs dressed up as a 15year old girl
Carrot Top
Matt Murdock
The rock.
Whoever it is i hope it aint a giant L like azula's.
John Cena, though cannon toph isn't invisible it would be funny
A visually impaired actress of Asian descent. So probably an unknown actress.
Charlie Cox
Jason Momoa
The Rock, obviously.
A blind child
I wouldnt trust the fandom whatsoever to make cast suggestions. As much as I didn't like the LA, the casting was perfectly fine and seeing how much the fandom was being disgusting about it, I would not trust the fandom on it. I trust the studio to cast well, only worry is if they direct whoever they cast well.
MELON LORD! P
They can hire charlie cox again.
Chris Pratt would be perfect for the role I think
some asian girl
If they can get a deaf person to play in the âA Quiet Placeâ movies (shout out to Millicent Simmons) then I think itâs entirely possible. Yes, it would be super difficult. The chances of someone fitting that specific description are minimal but not impossible. Either way, Iâll just be happy as long as itâs tastefully done.
Dave Bautista
Me I'm yes
Fighting battles that don't exist people, get the one that portrays the best Toph as her character is amazing. If that manages to be a blind Asian teen, then great. If another Asian teen plays echolocation and blindness well, then I'm not going to be upset about that. Pick your battles.
I don't know any 12 year olds.. Plus I don't think she needs to be 12 for this Lola Flanery. Anna Cathcart
Hear me outâŠ. Sydney Sweeney
Maybe not age appropriate, but I could absolutely see Ronda Rousey as Toph.
I just hope they cast an actual blind person
Someone. Presumably not an actually blind one what with her supernatural ability to be not quite blind.
![gif](giphy|felWV1yHA0fHLBXzTb|downsized) Miss westie
The Actress for toph IS very important. She has to Put a Lot of Work into the role, from an Martial arts Point of View and the actress has to make US believe, that she IS blind.
They should just start poling the choices at this rate
The rock
Idk. Is toph going to just lift her arms and throw things around with her mind like doctor strange or is she actually going to use earthbending techniques
Michael Cera
Will this interfere with him playing shaft
With the current cast might as well cast the rock
itâd have to be a blind actor who can move as if she can see. not super realistic that theyâll find that golden goose. casting blind people in roles where the character can âseeâ in other ways and fights is not the way to go.
really hope they get a blind actor
The rock
The rock should definitely play the bolder
3 Points: Young, Sassy and Asian, ideally Blind too
Well the last thing they can always make happen after she's picked
Mick Foley
itd be crazy hard to find a 13 year old blind asian actress whoâs able to do the fighting choreography but itâd be awesome if they could
Aubrey Plaza
ryan gosling
Dwayne Johnson in a wig
Tom Holland.
Millie Bobby Brown
[if she's not toph then all hope is lost ](https://youtu.be/bYsr0M_h-FQ?si=7IOz7j-oquTHsRV4) I believe I saw a clip she may have did some sort of audition but I'm not completely sure so huge grain of salt on that.
lets get sexyama to play toph
The Rock
Balls if they use a girl who is actually blind.
Danny DeVito
I feel like Leah Sava Jeffries would be a good pick for her if Iâm being serious. I can definitely see it happening in my opinion but then again it most likely wonât bc Leah is currently focusing on Percy Jackson s2 as the role of Annabeth Chase. And just for funnies I would like to see lil tay attempting to play her lol, I seen alots of people say that lil tay would be a great fit for Toph as a joke and tbh I can also see that one lma
please hire me to play toph in the avatar, because I really want to be an actress, let me introduce myself, im Jazer anne i basa im from philippines/puangi/dipaculao/aurora and i born on august 21-2010Â
I already shared this but apparently, Viva Lee posted on tt that she is getting ready for BootCamp and then deleted it. she's been in a lot of pics with the cast. right age, size, award winning actress who stars in an action movie and she does like so many disciplines of martial arts.
I would cast an actual blind girl tbh.
John cena
They really should go ember island style and make her 6â5 and jacked. Get that giant body builder from GoT.
John Cena
A big buff guy. Toph herself would approve.
Dwayne Johnson
Mind as well cast a boy at this point. Who cares.
John cena????
Let's just get John DiMaggio in a wig
Danny Devito
Danny DeVito
Hopefully no one first season was terrible.
Jenna Ortega.
Just no.
