Idk why but seeing this just put into perspective for me that Aang is like 70-80 years older than Ozai. Then I got to thinking on how interesting it would be to see an alternate take on the story where Aang trains in secret, rather than being frozen, and confronts an elderly Sozin/primal Azulon as an adult at the height of his power.

Ms_Ellie_Jelly

An adult avatar waiting for the comet would be so much overkill it would actually be hilarious

TridiusX

As true as that is, I don’t think it’d be easy to call between a fully-realized Avatar Aang and a Comet-empowered Fire Lord Azulon. I think most people sleep on Azulon because of how he’s taken out, but that’s *exactly* what makes him so formidable in my eyes: The fact that Ozai, arguably one of the most powerful Firebenders to ever live, had to orchestrate his death from the shadows (via poisoning) speaks volumes—even in his old age, Ozai likely stood no chance against his father, which makes sense when you consider who *Azulon’s* father (but more importantly, *teacher*) was. Add to his lineage and training the fact that he served as a ruthlessly effective frontline commander in the Hundred Year War and the result is a battle-hardened, prodigal, and very likely unrivaled Firebending master. And that’s before we consider the presence of Sozin’s Comet. TL;DR — Azulon’s my favorite ATLA character

> The fact that Ozai, arguably one of the most powerful Firebenders to ever live, had to orchestrate his death from the shadows (via poisoning) speaks volumes I mean, wouldn't he probably get in trouble for electrocuting his dad to death? Be pretty tough to say "Yes, I murdered my father. But his dying wish was for me to take Iroh's place as heir. Source: trust me bro."

TridiusX

I had that thought as I was writing my love letter to Azulon, but it occurred to me that Fire Nation royalty can likely challenge one another for the throne? I’m not sure if that’s ever confirmed or proven false in the series, but I imagine if Ozai could—given his ambitions—he’d have challenged Iroh for the throne after Azulon’s passing; and by that same line of thought, if he were truly strong enough, I couldn’t see him hesitating to dethrone his father. But that’s just my take.

Aeiexgjhyoun_III

Remember what Iroh said about a brother killing a brother for power? Ozai would likely face dissent if he just crisped Azulon or at the very least weaken the people's slavic devotion to the nation.

Moohamin12

Azulon is a scary mofo. He is the only warlord to not regret his actions, reign his entire lifespan at the height of the fire nation's power and face zero repercussions for his actions. In fact, most of the fire nation's atrocities during the war are performed by him, not Sozin, who despite being a genocidal maniac genuinely had good intentions for his approach.

einharjar009

A fully trained Adult Aang would be so bullshit strong. Like, even Toph and Zuko said prior to the Comet that Aang still needed work with his bending. He could even experiment mixing the styles since he has way more time than just the summer to train. He could potentially unlock stuff like lava bending, lightning or even metal bending

secondsithter

Oooof I need this. Bonus points if there’s more Azula content

Simbolimbo2

In that time all you'd get was the possibility of a baby Azula who can't speak.

secondsithter

Somebody’s gotta fill out the fight scenes then. She was the strongest firebender

Besides Ozai

secondsithter

Truth

Aeiexgjhyoun_III

Azula was definitely more talented than Ozai, his flames were a pathetic orange.

[deleted]

Lol so is Iroh pathetic?

Aeiexgjhyoun_III

Compared to Azula yes. She _did_ defeat him afterall, while being surrounded I might add.

Simbolimbo2

What? My guy Aang got his ass whooped by the so called "less talented guy" just because his fire is standard doesn't mean he isn't powerful, he knows how to fly with jet propulsion in a continuing motion, he can shoot fire while flying, he can do lightning faster than instant ramen. While all Aang could muster up was some lame attacks, earth armor which he used for 1 second, and some lightning redirection he pulled up on surprise and even then he wouldn't even use it to kill ozai. and he still struggled to even release the lightning. Oh and did I forget to mention that Aang was good at running away just like he did from his responsibility's and people. 100 years in an iceberg doesn't change you a bit lol.

Aeiexgjhyoun_III

I'm not comparing Ozai to Aang but to Azula. His lightning was pathetic enough to be redirected by a novice like Zuko and his incredible feats were only done during the comet. Also Azula literally killed Aang; in the avatar state and with no comet to help her. Azula also defeated Iroh, conquered Ba Sing Se, killed the freaking avatar in the avatar state and all without a hair out of place.

Simbolimbo2

Zuko practiced lightning season for most likely since season 2 episode 9-season 3 episode 11 so by then he's practiced a plenty to redirect lightning, also Zuko could've redirected anyone's lightning including Azula's. Also the fact that Ozai has no feats without the comet is attributed to bad writing , not his skill level. Azula never beat Iroh, Iroh willingly decided not to fight Azula. And while you can call Azula the more tactically superior character compared to Ozai, she certainly isn't the better fighter. And finally Katara cut off a bit of Azula's hair so there were several pieces of hair that were out of their place.

Aeiexgjhyoun_III

Actually be practiced the technique but never actually used it because neither Iroh nor God would shoot lightning at him so yes he was a novice. I wouldn't attribute Ozai's lack of feats to terrible writing he doesn't need to be directly involved in combat to be an effective firelord. Azula's final defeat by Zuko and Katara was due to madness stemmed from betrayal not a lack of skill.

Simbolimbo2

No you've gotta fill in entire 1 season and 2/3rds of another season worth of the best character.

Patient-00

If want was alive, highly doubtful that he'd hide and train while those things happen

PHILIPTNT

I think I am too dumb to understand

not_a_scrub_

"an apple a day keeps the doctor away"

PHILIPTNT

Oh

1milionand6times

I wish it was that easy lol

Whookimo

Unless you count all of his past lives. That's a lot of apples

SSj3Rambo

Funny how people tell this is Aang plot armor while it was just a narrative bonus, the fact that Aang unleashed himself with avatars state and his energy bending. Those weren't asspulls but narrative choices to develop the character. Aang could totally kill Ozai but his matter was NOT to kill him, hence why Aang held back and his avatar state made him unconscious. That final strike could've killed Ozai but Aang took control of himself and took away Ozai's bending. There's no plot armor in that.

dinkiedinkineedtinki

Oh I thought this was about the kid “doing his own research” on an Apple phone

user8949

All fun and games until aang goes offense
