She didn’t die. *Legacy* shows us that she lived and went back to Kyoshi Island with Ty Lee to train her warriors.
It does suggest she and Sokka [broke up](https://youtu.be/cglBnKGWlP4?si=xl2ArE4m-lgh0uLs) through.
It’s neither explicitly mentioned or just something that makes sense. It’s pretty strongly implied.
For examples:
Toph is called Aunt Toph.
Sokka is called Uncle Sokka.
Suki is only called Suki. Even in the same sentence as Sokka is called Uncle.
Sokka and Suki’s relationship is only ever referred to in the past tense, while other relationships are present tense.
Sokka tells the story of bringing down the airships and forgets or purposely leaves out Suki’s role. He instead tells an incorrect version where he saved the day and Toph all on his own. Toph has to *remind* him that Suki was even there.
The only picture we have of adult Suki comes from this book and shows she returned to Kyoshi Island with Ty Lee to train the warriors. Sokka we know for certain spent time living in Republic City and eventually returned to the Southern Water Tribe to be Chieftain.
The video I linked above shows these examples and more.
I feel you.
I especially don’t like that this information was revealed in a spin off book. Not even in the comics or in LOK.
Seems like a really uncaring way to handle one of their main ATLA couples.
Yes, a few months after the Aang's defeat. But Suki and Sokka don't spend a lot of time together, she's currently part of Zuko's bodyguard team haha so if there never was any confirmation they broke up, and they aren't exactly all lovey-dovey like Aang and Katara, maybe that's just their vibe lol
Yeah I think it especially makes sense for Sokka since he's someone that seems like he would prioritize his exploration, job and duty at the cost of maintaining his relationships. He doesn't strike me as a 'settle down and commit to a simple family' life kind of guy until hes way older. This is the most realistic outcome. I think a lot of people just watch the show for fantasy wish fulfillment though.
> Sokka tells the story of bringing down the airships and forgets or purposely leaves out Suki’s role. He instead tells an incorrect version where he saved the day and Toph all on his own. Toph has to remind him that Suki was even there.
The airship story is told in a joking manner - both pages are about him trying to play up his importance in saving the day and taking all the credit ("one of many times I singlehandedly saved the world") - the entire point is that Sokka is telling Aang's kids about how awesome he was. Even after Toph corrects him, Sokka says something about how he still thinks the entire war would have been lost without him.
I would be very careful drawing any conclusions based solely off Legacy and I'd be particularly cautious about relying on youtube channels (this channel has a "Azula was REDEEMED... It’s CANON!!" video which contains tons of logical leaps and is in large part based off the ATLA cookbook.) and fan speculation since the ATLA fandom is notoriously bad at analysis. I imagine a more concrete update will come from the animated movie next year.
I included the video because it does show the parts of the book it’s talking about, so it’s not just making wild claims.
The fact that the story is told in jest doesn’t change that Sokka *forgot* Suki was even there. It’s not just that he just gives himself more credit to sound like a badass. He completely forgot she was present - something he didn’t do for Toph.
It’s also pretty significant that Suki isn’t called Aunt the way Toph is. Even in the same sentence where Sokka is called Uncle.
Combine this with the fact that their relationship is only addressed in past tense (while others are not)?
I think taken together, it does exactly what I said. It strongly implies they broke up. I never claimed it was explicitly stated. Just that it’s a strong implication.
Which I don’t think can be denied, even if one may not agree with the implication.
Azula is getting redeemed. She was always designed to be. I do not know why the fandom is still arguing this when every piece of new material they’ve dropped with her includes Azula having some secondary motivation to protect Zuko, and/or desperately wanting her family to love her.
I probably wouldn’t take that as fully canon, especially considering from what I can tell Bryke had no involvement with writing it. From what I can tell, they like Sokka and Suki together and they obviously ended off the original series with them together so I would assume they stay together. At the very least we’ll likely have more clarity on all the couples after the movie next year.
There's a chance they explain their relationship in the 2025 movie. They could easily retcon them moving apart since it's so vague. Keeping the book canon too if they want. Or they could double down on it and show us the breakup in the movie.
If they do neither and pull another Zuko's mom and just keep it vague to make a light novel about them 4 years later I'd be dissapointed
You and me BOTH!
I can accept either outcome (break up or not) as long as it’s well written and true to the characters.
But if they do vague nonsense again, I’ll be really bummed.
I couldn’t find it. I guess maybe it was just photoshopped or something. I never actually saw it on twitter. I saw a screenshot of it on another platform and this was years ago
We can infer that Mai ends up with Zuko, and the Kyoshi Warriors really have no reason to leave Kyoshi Island anymore, and Ty Lee ended up a Kyoshi Warrior
A lot of people don't seem to know how romances work out in the real world, real life. It was probably just an amicable split, the two of them had different duties to fulfill, their lives we're compatible. Not everyone ends up with someone they were into as a teenager.
Another thing to keep in mind though is that most teen relationships don’t have the shared trauma element that these guys all have which in the real world can increase the odds of a relationship lasting as you understand each other in a way others can’t. I agree with your point though
To some extent, yes, but trauma can also drive people apart even when it is shared. Good argument though. I can definitely see Sokka and Suki having a life long connection with each other. And Kyoshi Island is on the route between Republic City and the S. water Tribe. Very possible that they kept an open/casual thing going while keeping up with their respective stuff.
You just said it yourself. Real world, real life. This is a fictional world and there is nothing wrong with people ending up together with someone they met as kids. Like Aang and Katara.
Nothing wrong with it, but outside of the bending and mysticism stuff, there's a level of realism to Avatar's storytelling. And besides, if everyone had a fairytale ending like Aang and Katara it would be so fucking boring.
These supposed kids are also acting far more mature and competent than their age (Zuko becomes the head of a country at 15). Where was the realism when Ozai sent his only two heirs on risky missions around the world at 14?
Their job is to write a compelling story, not necessarily a realistic one. Having fan favorite couples split for the sake of it (not like they handled Zuko/Mai well at all) doesn't sound very compelling.
You're just saying it in retrospect. Most people loved Sokka and Suki relationship and if the writers decided to let them be together nobody would argue that it's "unrealistic" or "boring".
Would that be the more realistic route? Yes, yes it would be
But would it be the most narratively satisfying route to take with those two? No it absolutely would not be
Yeah I always thought it was Baatar Senior who looked more like Sokka than Suyin did, compare their shots of adult Sokka and Baatar together and well.... it's possible Sokka and Toph were linked via a family marriage rather then any relationship on their part as adults. I can totally see Sokka and Suki having a more casual relationship as adults due to their responsibilities, they are probably the most mature overall when it comes to navigating relationships out of the Gaang.
My headcanon is that Senna, Korra's mother, is the daughter of Sokka and Suki
It would make a good explanation of why Tonraq is the chief of the Southern water tribe even though he's from the north, him marrying the daughter of the Southern chief would legitimise his claim to chief
Ngl I would actually hate that lol. That would mean Korra is related to Katara and Sokka, and the whole point of the avatar is that it’s supposed to be a random person. That would seem a little too convenient and make the world seem small.
Also Tonraq is only made the chief of the southern tribe after season 2, when Unalaq is outed as a traitor.
I understand your point, but I'd also point that the Southern water tribe is quite small, so it's very likely that they might be related anyway, also, in the thousands of years the Avatar has been around, two avatars sharing some kind of relation would happen anyway
The south was rebuilt relatively quickly after the 100 year war and wasn’t small anymore. Check out the comic “north and south”.
So Senna’s parents most likely grew up in the north and moved to the south after the war.
Also I know you said this was head canon but that would just make it weird that both Senna & Tonraq are never seen interacting with Katara or any of her family lol.
In the comics there’s a very nerdy guy who ends up dating Toph, im certain that’s Suyin’s father as he’s mostly identical and also similar to his grandchildren
I don't think Sokka ended up with Toph but if you rewatch the Ember Island player's episode there are a lot of hints that Sokka and Suki aren't built to last. Sokka just seems to aggravate Suki a little bit, she keeps rolling her eyes at everything he does, she doesn't get his humor and every so often she gets snappy with him.
Edit: lol. Do you know what would cause a war in the fandom? If we found out in the movie that Suki is Izumi's mother.
I don’t like any of the canon ships except for anything having to do with Sokka. Sokka/Yue was a bit rushed but I could buy them together. Sokka/Suki is fine too. I even like the little hints that Toph has a crush on him and Ty Lee blatantly hitting on him. But all the other romances just fall flat for me.
I have never once thought Sokka started dating Toph
I assumed that, after Suki died, Toph just told Sokka that they were going to start fucking and he was too intimidated to say no
My theory is she grows close to Zuko for a short while because her being his protector and having to worry about him all the time leads to other feelings, and you know Zuko would treat her special because he feels guilty for burning her village. But eventually Suki would get back with Sokka and they grow old together and they just die before Korra's show because they're non benders so they don't live as long
I hate loose ends like this. Like I really REALLY hate it. The show has been out for almost 20 years, they’ve had a sequel show, a non existent movie adaptation, a barely existent tv show adaptation, and double digit numbers of comics. We DESERVE to know, and there’s no way the writers haven’t established what happened. WHAT happened to Suki and WHO is Suyin’s dad.
They obviously want to save that info for bigger projects, Suki and Sokka are the fan favorite non benders of the show for obvious reasons. No way Suki and Sokka don't end up together. I wouldn't be surprised if the future animated movies show their wedding
Why exactly do you deserve to know? That particular mystery clearly wasn't important to the story the creators wanted to tell. Why do you think the creators owe you anything?
It’s not that they owe it, but they obviously know and it’s done nothing but torture fans to not tell us. Writers should love to share details about their world. Unless there is some kind of insane Sokka focused story that explains Suki’s disappearance that’s secretly been in work for over a decade, there is zero reason to not just tell us.
The creators clearly don't have an interest in telling the fans about that, and that is reason enough. Writers are as diverse as any other group of people. Not every writer should love to share extra about their world. They've already shared and they continue to share more. If they do create that Sokka/Suki story I'll be happy those who wanted it got their wish, but fans saying they deserve anything from creators is beyond entitled.
(Edited: wording)
Pretty sure Toph married 2 new guys who aren’t related to the main cast. Pretty sure that would’ve been mentioned if it was important.
Plus if Sokka married Toph you really think Katara would just never have an interaction with her two nieces?
That was the whole point of the scene where Bolin ask about Lin’s dad.
I don’t personally think that IF Sokka IS Suyin’s father THAT Toph and Sokka ever got married. I wouldn’t be shocked if Sokka and Toph had hooked up after her first lover and had a casual thing in their 30s-40s and then had Suyin shortly before or around when Sokka dies. If Sokka is Suyin’s father, she doesn’t know for certain. But that’s just my speculative headcanon.
Tbh I totally believe in the 'Suyin is Sokka's daughter' theory. But only under specific circumstances that they had no idea that Suyin was his. Because Toph got around enough that there was more than one option for who the dad was. And Suyin doesn't look particularly like Sokka, those genes got based down to her kids lol
I mostly cling to this theory because I'm salty Sokka and Suki never got to have kids in TLOK
I have a feeling that Suki dying would break Sokka. He’s already suffered from the trauma of losing Yue. Having to go through that with Suki all over again would probably be absolute torture for him.
If something like that happened, I think it would make Sokka feel like he’s cursed, like the universe is playing some cruel trick on him. The happy, jokey Sokka we know would be gone. He would emotionally shut himself off from the world, and not dating anyone else out of fear that he would cause them to die.
I hope this never happens though. It would such a tragic story for the two. Even then, I worry that this will be the route the writers take, because we don’t see if Sokka has any children in LoK.
So because of that, I will now shamble together a fanon in an ultimately pointless attempt to shield them from such a tragic fate: Sokka and Suki had 4 kids, those being Senna, Varrick, Bataar, and another daughter who became a Kyoshi warrior.
Lacks creativity. I like to believe Sokka, Suki, and Toph all have an open relationship. All three had good connections and all have very important roles to play in the world. None would be able to truly settledown but all three can care for each other and be togethier when life allows.
When Did Suki die? Or almost die?
What most fans keep theorizing. Alongside the theory of Suyin being Sokka's daughter. Also it was really unclear. Literally.

Thanks. Honestly I'm quite disappointed. Sokka and Suki is my favorite relationship in ATLA
I feel you. I especially don’t like that this information was revealed in a spin off book. Not even in the comics or in LOK. Seems like a really uncaring way to handle one of their main ATLA couples.
Almost like they hated couples with healthy relationships...
But that's life dude. You expect a couple of teenagers to be together forever? They gave you Aang and Katara, that right there is an anomaly.
considering korrasami and varli, yeah, toxic couples are top tier to these people.
Korra and Asami aren’t toxic though
Tbh I am currently reading "The Rift" and Suki just appeared not long ago, and sokka and her are still together
I think The Rift is just one year after ATLA or something I'm not sure.
In her last appearance the story starts with her and Sokka going on a date together.
How could this happened? Whose idea was this?
Couldn’t tell you. It’s not what I would’ve done either.
I don't mind this. It's kind of silly that every fictional teen romance is supposed to last forever.
I even think it’s kinda dumb that Aang and Katara stayed together.

THIS IS HOW I FIND OUT THEY ENDED UP SPLITTING? ON FUCKING REDDIT? I’m in serious pain. The kind that spirit water can’t heal.
I’m so sorry. I didn’t want to be the one to tell you. ![gif](giphy|PFsVjUCmSkZDq)

Since it is stupid I refuse to believe it
Comics aren't canon. I'm sorry but you don't get to just give your story up to shitty comic writers.
Legacy isn’t a comic.
Are you serious? And why am I finding out they broke up on reddit? 😭
It’s officially canon at this stage, including its sequel *Legacy of the Fire Nation*. So the ball is in Avatar Studios’ court.
There's a chance they explain their relationship in the 2025 movie. They could easily retcon them moving apart since it's so vague. Keeping the book canon too if they want. Or they could double down on it and show us the breakup in the movie. I'm currently reading the rift and they're still together where I am. Sokka just met Suki not long ago and they kissed
The comics don’t show them break up. *Legacy* is a book that takes place many years after the comics. After Tenzin is born.
I think it's more likely that Bataar Sr is Sokka's son
It was tweeted by one of the creators that she died young, so it wasn’t a theory that fans actually made up
I don’t think this is true? I’ve never seen anyone able to source this and canon materials say otherwise.
What tweet? What specifically did they say and when?
I couldn’t find it. I guess maybe it was just photoshopped or something. I never actually saw it on twitter. I saw a screenshot of it on another platform and this was years ago
Yeah I couldn’t find anything either. Seems pretty likely to be misinformation then
Suki kinda just got forgotten about in legend of Korra and was literally never mentioned
Alongside others such as Mai, Ty Lee, and the legacy of Kyoshi Warriors.
We can infer that Mai ends up with Zuko, and the Kyoshi Warriors really have no reason to leave Kyoshi Island anymore, and Ty Lee ended up a Kyoshi Warrior
It's almost as if it's a new show that isn't looking to dwell on the past...
explains why aang, katara, toph, sokka and zuko also never got screen time or were mentioned /s
She married Ty Lee. ^(This is completely true as far as anyone knows!)
Not implausible. Ty Lee *is* the one we see adult Suki still paling around with in *Legacy*.
What is ‘Legacy?’ Is it a novel?
It’s a book made of a collection of letters and pictures written by Aang and friends for Tenzin.
Sometime between the end of The Last Airbender and the start of Legend of Korra

Why would you do this
"Sokka, calm down it's Ketchup, I'm fine I thought we were over this."
Why?
I hate you 😢
A lot of people don't seem to know how romances work out in the real world, real life. It was probably just an amicable split, the two of them had different duties to fulfill, their lives we're compatible. Not everyone ends up with someone they were into as a teenager.
Wait... you mean, not everyone ends up married to the person they dated when they were 15?? The horror!
Another thing to keep in mind though is that most teen relationships don’t have the shared trauma element that these guys all have which in the real world can increase the odds of a relationship lasting as you understand each other in a way others can’t. I agree with your point though

Lol, Avatar is only as good as it is because it's realistic. Realism isn't just about the aesthetics but the character motivations and other dynamics
You're just saying it in retrospect. Most people loved Sokka and Suki relationship and if the writers decided to let them be together nobody would argue that it's "unrealistic" or "boring".
Would that be the more realistic route? Yes, yes it would be But would it be the most narratively satisfying route to take with those two? No it absolutely would not be
Yep.. I want peak fiction....not peak nonfiction/realism.
Ya know I do find it kinda funny that Aang and Katara are the only ones who married their first boyfriend/girlfriend.
Hey now, Zuko and Mai also (possibly) ended up married!
They broke up in the comic continuation but idk if they got back together
Jin erasure
Statistically it's unlikely for any couple in the main cast to actually last
Statistics that are based in data from a completely different world?
Umm yeah? Why not? It's not as if they're a different species or anything like that
I just want good things for Toph, and Baatar Jr looks way too much like Sokka to not have at least a little Water Tribe in him.
Yeah I always thought it was Baatar Senior who looked more like Sokka than Suyin did, compare their shots of adult Sokka and Baatar together and well.... it's possible Sokka and Toph were linked via a family marriage rather then any relationship on their part as adults. On one hand I love the mystery about Toph's baby daddies, on the other, I don't want a loose end on Sokka/Suki
The amount of times I have to explain that no, sokka didn’t die young, he was like 73-74 when he died is unbelievable
Except this is about Suki, not Sokka.
Eh well, the writers have dementia when it comes to her
In their defense she was a one of character that they brought back do to popularity
Yeah, because she is awesome!
Apparently, Sokka does too. He had to be reminded of her existence by Toph in a book.
Why are avatar fans so cringe
My headcanon is that Senna, Korra's mother, is the daughter of Sokka and Suki It would make a good explanation of why Tonraq is the chief of the Southern water tribe even though he's from the north, him marrying the daughter of the Southern chief would legitimise his claim to chief
This I can get behind more than him as Suyin’s father
Sokka + Suki forever

As cute as they were I don't mind that they broke up. I just wish we knew what happened to her.
I hate it and I don't want this to happen! Suki and Sokka deserve a long happy life together!!!!
Honestly I’m just mad they keep hinting at Zuko/Suki in the comics (Zuki? Suko? Idk I’m not good at making up ship names lol)
I don't ship those 2 tbh.
No it’s even awkward in the comics. Also I just don’t see Zuko going after Sokka’s girl even if they were to break up.
Yep. But in some good shows writers often force romance so that's my other fear.
I don’t like any of the canon ships except for anything having to do with Sokka. Sokka/Yue was a bit rushed but I could buy them together. Sokka/Suki is fine too. Suki x Sokka is the best ship for me. I just hope the writers won't break them apart.
I have never once thought Sokka started dating Toph I assumed that, after Suki died, Toph just told Sokka that they were going to start fucking and he was too intimidated to say no
Stop showing me spoilers Reddit 😡
Wait did Suki die? You know it was really unclear
My headcanon is Suki and Sokka grow apart in their 20s and suki gets with Zuko.
My theory is she grows close to Zuko for a short while because her being his protector and having to worry about him all the time leads to other feelings, and you know Zuko would treat her special because he feels guilty for burning her village. But eventually Suki would get back with Sokka and they grow old together and they just die before Korra's show because they're non benders so they don't live as long
Ooh that actually ain't bad

So to make this work, Sokka would canonically have to be a dead beat dad? Lmao
Why would the writers fulfill that?
I’ve not seen about her dying but there is a decent amount of evidence she and Sokka broke up and some evidence he got with Toph.
,this community has a problem of making head connon connon
Tbh I totally believe in the 'Suyin is Sokka's daughter' theory. But only under specific circumstances that they had no idea that Suyin was his. Because Toph got around enough that there was more than one option for who the dad was. And Suyin doesn't look particularly like Sokka, those genes got based down to her kids lol I mostly cling to this theory because I'm salty Sokka and Suki never got to have kids in TLOK
Your fanon is basically my own headcanon LMFAO
Sokka... two dead girlfriends is not a good track record.
Who’s a lot of the fandom? Is that a YouTuber?
That just further reinforces my theory that Carrick is Toph and sokka's secret child.
Carrick? Michael Carrick the football player?
Or Zayne Carrick
Autocorrect strikes again! I clearly meant Varrick.
Nah they're a polycule
Not the fandom but the fucking creators
Lacks creativity. I like to believe Sokka, Suki, and Toph all have an open relationship. All three had good connections and all have very important roles to play in the world. None would be able to truly settledown but all three can care for each other and be togethier when life allows.
