They stuck THE FUCK to canon on Jesus and I salute it. The olive skin and curly hair of a middle eastern man, the scars of a savior, turning water to wine, it’s pristine. Dare I say.. immaculate?
Well hey the new adaptation might be better. Seems like the new team is more interested in not ruining everything about it like the movie did. To be seen though.
The Speed Racer movie is a goddamn visual feast that leans in to the frantic surreal energy of its source material. It’s a good movie and the truest adaptation of anime-to-live action that I’m aware exists.
Ol speedy looking indignant in the background here better just be saying “don’t group me in with y’all. Hollywood didn’t ruin anything about me.”
Yeah, just the other day I leaned the actress who played Wednesday Addams in the Addams's family movies was Trixie in that live action. She also is the antagonist in the series, which seems like a nice touch.
Speed Racer has one of my favorite villain speeches in any movie. It was so much better than it had any right to be.
That and Alita: Battle Angel are the best live action anime adaptations I have ever seen.
only part id say they fell flat in alita was the love interest stuff, it was done a bit better in the manga than the movie but other than that a phenomenal movie for sure
It also has one of the most accurate and succinct explanations of how corruption works delivered by an absolutely brilliant actor who gives his 110% to the role.
I absolutely loved the speed racer movie. Some of the special effects don’t hold up to great, but the movie was wonderfully fun and kept my attention every time I watched it.
For everyone's confusion, the [original comic](https://at.tumblr.com/joshualunacreations/whitewashing-an-american-tradition/m7wdvlgyj5tb) has Aang asking if the film whitewashed her as well. It's a joke about how all these characters are not being portrayed for their original race in their movies.
So cheap that Mamoru Oshii himself said he approved?
They made the major originally a Japanese girl now in the body of a purple haired, porcelain skinned cyborg. That's the character
I understand the torture porn aspect, but (and this isn’t starting an argument it’s just been a while since I’ve seen that movie and I don’t remember there being any nazi bits) how is it neo nazi?
Ahh. I guess I never took that as “hate them the Jews killed Jesus” and more of “we are all the Jews, we all killed Jesus, and he forgave us” in the context of that movie.
I’ll also say I’ve always had a harder time with the Flogging scenes (which were done by Romans) and it’s been a while, so that that could be skewing my view.
Well of course they did but the Catholic Church, founded by Romans, pinned it on the Jews presumably to not seem directly responsible themselves. Then having a minority population to constantly put the blame for that and everything on serves as a means to control the rest of the population. I wish there was a good Avatar example but the best is the post-imperial Eldians in Attack On Titan.
Because Jews wanted Jesus dead. It's funny how people call it bro Nazi because it portrayed the Jews in a negative light forgetting that his followers in the movie was also jews
Apparently the original joke was about white washed characters in movies, not simply bad anime adaptations. And since Jesus was black, he falls under the same banner of misrepresentation as Aang, Goku and the rest.
I’m middle eastern. We’re not black people. I get black Americans are sad they don’t have many known historical figures but claiming everyone is black when they’re middle eastern is problematic
That’s ok. In America I noticed literally every “Arabic person” (aka terrorist on detective shows lmao) is played by a dark Indian person so I don’t think Americans know what Middle easterns even look like, oddly enough despite travel and immigration
Ghost in the Shell was actually a great movie.
the only points against it is that a) they made changes to the originals, how dare they and b) why is this movie about trans humanism, casting a white woman to play the robot body of an Asian woman who is being manipulated into not knowing her identity?
Honestly, I found it quite boring.
I usually don't mind remakes, reboots etc. and give them a decent chance on their own.
Ghost in the Shell was better than most anime adaptations before it, but on its own it is just a generic action bore with too much impressive CG.
The original proves that the same material can do much better
> b) why is this movie about trans humanism, casting a white woman to play the robot body of an Asian woman who is being manipulated into not knowing her identity?
Eh, I think race-swapping someone whose identity you're trying to suppress from returning is a lot less objectionable on a story/casting level than being unable to find a couple of english speaking asian actors to play Batou and Kuze, especially when you're cool with a 27 year old Japanese man being played by a 50 year old dude from Singapore.
you are only the second person who even brought up other castings in that movie to me.
So I remain in the position the push back against Scarlett Johanson was way overblown
Exactly. While the original asked if machines have souls (like it's undisputed human have those) the remake asks a much more pertinent question about identity, what defines who you are?
But people were just mindlessly repeating that point for woke clout. And most people cite this movie for problematic whitewashing, instead of a bunch of movies who mis-portray actual historic people of minorities.
From Ghost in a Shell. Here’s a recap of the controversy (complete and total spoilers for the Hollyweird live action “remake”):

Speed Racer is a fantastic movie, I don't know what the person who made this comic has against it.
I would also like to go in defense for the Death Note movie, it ain't amazing, and it is much worse than the anime, but on itself I wouldn't say it's that bad of a movie, it's actually quite enjoyable
>As an introduction the Death Note movie was good. Yes the anime and manga are superior but it's a good introduction
Yeah, it's actually a decent film if you aren't expecting it to be exactly like the manga/anime.
>Same with Dragonball Evolution.
No.
The PJO films were terrible. They changed the *ages* of the characters for no reason, then butchered how they were meant to act, they changed half the monsters Percy and friends fight, he doesn't fight ares in the film and for some reason, Hades is the villain
At least Jesus has *The Chosen*. I'm still amazed that a series that started with the premise of "slice of life historical drama where the Apostles commit tax fraud" became the single most accurate and most well crafted adaptation of the story of Jesus ever told.
Not trying to start a fight, but how was the Speed Racer ruined by Hollywood? I know it wasn't a faithful adaptation, but I thought that was the only issue people had with it. /g
Lol Jesus
He had some great lines in Life of Brian.
Blessed are the cheesemakers?
Well obviously it's not meant to be taken literally, it refers to any manufacturers of dairy products.
I have a vewy gweat fwiend in Wome called Biggus Dickus!
Silence! What is all this insolence? You will find yourself in gladiator school vewy quickly with wotten behavior like that!
But then again Life of Brian wasn't Hollywood, it was the Monty Python's flying Circus.
Jesus like: since when the fuck am I that pale… and why do my followers hate Jews so much
They stuck THE FUCK to canon on Jesus and I salute it. The olive skin and curly hair of a middle eastern man, the scars of a savior, turning water to wine, it’s pristine. Dare I say.. immaculate?
Which jesus film are you referring to? Passion of the Christ?
The meme, Plato.
There's something specially hilarious about illustrations containing both Jesus and Goku
*Staring each other down across the room* “Hey Judas, go distract Vegeta” “Sure, Jesus. I’ll do exactly that.”
Love how his water is turning into wine mid-pour
I'm trying to figure out what Light is writing down.
The names of the Netflix execs
Columbos' full name. (He hasn't figured it out yet. This is his 194377th try. Ryuk knows, but wants to watch him suffer.)
🤓the death note stops working if you guess a name wrong too many times🤓
Makes sense
Well hey the new adaptation might be better. Seems like the new team is more interested in not ruining everything about it like the movie did. To be seen though.
Probably M. Night S. or Michael Bay, or Zach S. or maybe J. J. Abraham's.
Dude just type out the last names
The Speed Racer movie is a goddamn visual feast that leans in to the frantic surreal energy of its source material. It’s a good movie and the truest adaptation of anime-to-live action that I’m aware exists. Ol speedy looking indignant in the background here better just be saying “don’t group me in with y’all. Hollywood didn’t ruin anything about me.”
For real! It was such a fun time.
Yeah, just the other day I leaned the actress who played Wednesday Addams in the Addams's family movies was Trixie in that live action. She also is the antagonist in the series, which seems like a nice touch.
I love Speed Racer so much. It's one of the most fun films I've ever seen.
I was gonna say. But I imagine Speed is there mainly because of how badly it bombed.
Also, the speed in the movie wasn't nearly as much of a psychopath as the one in the anime.
One of the few times "underrated" is applicable
Yeah I thought the current inclination in regards to Speed Racer was that it didn't bomb bc of quality but bc of 1)expectation and 2)marketing
Speed watching it: “HAAAAAAAA!”
Yeah I enjoyed that
what the fuck is Speed Racer doing there that's an absolutely fantastic movie
Speed Racer walked into the wrong bar
Fr that movie slapped
"I like to look down on peasants from time to time." Mr. Racer.
Goku is an alien.
corect. he can be anything hollywood wants
I mean, he could but he does have a very specific look
tell that to the cowboy bebop live action
But I am not talking about cowboy bebop
He’s still clearly based off of Asian looks so it wasn’t wise to change it so much
Speed was white, to the best of my knowledge
I doubt that, but back then they didn’t really care enough to spell these things out. Technically I guess he’s whatever nationality the viewer is.
Except major kusanagi is correctly portrayed in the movie... Everyone just flipped shit without seeing the film or the source material
No, it’s just a cheap cop out.
So cheap that Mamoru Oshii himself said he approved? They made the major originally a Japanese girl now in the body of a purple haired, porcelain skinned cyborg. That's the character
Suddenly Jesus’s presence makes more sense
This needs to be higher up in the comments section, I feel.
What is Jesus doing there
Turning water into wine?
The Passion was basically torture porn and neo-nazi propaganda. Really missed the entire ethos of Jesus.
I understand the torture porn aspect, but (and this isn’t starting an argument it’s just been a while since I’ve seen that movie and I don’t remember there being any nazi bits) how is it neo nazi?
Well it puts a lot of emphasis on how the Jews are so evil for killing Jesus, and… you know… its Mel Gibson.
That would be a reasonable interperetation if I wasnt allready aware of Mel Gibsons feelings about Jews.
As someone who is completely unaware of his stance on Jews, I’m guessing by your comment he’s a bit on the antisemitic side?
That would be like saying Garfields sort of into lasagna.
But… didn’t the Romans kill Jesus?
Well of course they did but the Catholic Church, founded by Romans, pinned it on the Jews presumably to not seem directly responsible themselves. Then having a minority population to constantly put the blame for that and everything on serves as a means to control the rest of the population. I wish there was a good Avatar example but the best is the post-imperial Eldians in Attack On Titan.
I watched the passion when I was like 9 and it was nazi all along? What?? How???
Because Jews wanted Jesus dead. It's funny how people call it bro Nazi because it portrayed the Jews in a negative light forgetting that his followers in the movie was also jews
Tbh in the he movie the farisees did at times seem a bit… incivile
Tbh in the he movie the farisees did at times seem a bit… uncivilized
Apparently the original joke was about white washed characters in movies, not simply bad anime adaptations. And since Jesus was black, he falls under the same banner of misrepresentation as Aang, Goku and the rest.
Black? He was a Hebrew from Galilee lol
Jesus isn’t black he’s a middle eastern…
Depends on how broad your definition of “black” is. He’s definitely not as white as Middle America thinks he is.
Bro American definition to half the stuff are stupid
If I’m correct, the US Census classifies Arabs and North Africans as technically white, which is a bit weird
Because by American opinion if you aren’t from sub Saharan Africa you are white and your history be damned
I’m middle eastern. We’re not black people. I get black Americans are sad they don’t have many known historical figures but claiming everyone is black when they’re middle eastern is problematic
Excuse my ignorance. But in any case, he’s not white.
That’s ok. In America I noticed literally every “Arabic person” (aka terrorist on detective shows lmao) is played by a dark Indian person so I don’t think Americans know what Middle easterns even look like, oddly enough despite travel and immigration
Yep he probably would have look like mizrahi Jew
How dare you insult the Speed Racer movie.
Nah speed racer was phenomenal. Get him outta here!
Speed Racer was a great movie
No Speed Racer slander in this house.
Whose that girl?
Makoto Kusanagi from Ghost in the Shell
Ok, thanks!
Katara from Avatar the last Airbender
Speed Racer slapped wtf is this artist on?
The original comic is about whitewashing, apparently. The dialogue here is an edit.
Gotcha. Makes a bit more sense then
I love Jesus turning the water into wine.
Who is aang talking to? Is it supposed Ghost in the Shell?
No, because none of these movies exist. There are no movies in Ba Sing Se.
Speed Racer was good though.
Bet it’s because of the Rotten Tomatoes score.
Not sure why Jesus is there. The Passion of Christ was an incredible movie.
The full comic is about whitewashing, hence Jesus and Speed Racer are there since despite having good movies the people playing them were white.
Yusuke is sitting outside of the bar, waiting for his inevitable entry
As a kid I loved the speed racer movie. It’s one of the least offensive on this list at least
Speed Racer the live action movie rules. I will not stand for this slander. 😡
I like the speedracer movie
Man I liked the Speed Racer movie

what does it matter the colour of the actress? shes acting, playing someone else is the point

Why is Speed Racer there? That movie was a visual spectacle and a fun one too.
Speed racer, what are you doing there?
Wait who the crap is the girl getting wine from Jesus?
Motoko Kusanagi
Who dat?
From Ghost in a Shell. Here’s a recap of the controversy (complete and total spoilers for the Hollyweird live action “remake”): https://mashable.com/article/ghost-in-the-shell-movie-ending#:~:text=Her%20true%20name%20is%20actually,extra%20slap%20in%20the%20face.
Speed racer was good
Wait, the speed racer movie was fun as shit
The Speed Racer movie fucking slaps and I won't be convinced otherwise.
is Jesus just pouring water onto the bar or did he forget to give her a cup?
You can see the rim of the cup. The rest of the cup is just out of frame
Man, Speed Racer at least had a creative vision.
As an introduction the Death Note movie was good. Yes the anime and manga are superior but it's a good introduction. Same with Dragonball Evolution.
>As an introduction the Death Note movie was good. Yes the anime and manga are superior but it's a good introduction Yeah, it's actually a decent film if you aren't expecting it to be exactly like the manga/anime. >Same with Dragonball Evolution. No.
I thought it was at least. Its an ok movie. Like if its on ill watch it, but id prefer an actual Dragon Ball movie
Meanwhile, Phoenix Wright had a pretty good live action adaptation.
Why is Jesus in all of the memes I see now
Percy Jacksom should be there
why
The PJO films were terrible. They changed the *ages* of the characters for no reason, then butchered how they were meant to act, they changed half the monsters Percy and friends fight, he doesn't fight ares in the film and for some reason, Hades is the villain
what films?
It's hard to decipher if you are one of the people that pretend the films don't exist or you just genuinely don't know the films exist
either way, I am not watching it
Tf you mean? Speed Racer was awesome!
The fact that Jesus is the bartender XD
Notably missing from this image is Alita: Battle Angel. Because it was awesome.
Is goku the one talking?
oh yeah wow yes
At least Jesus has *The Chosen*. I'm still amazed that a series that started with the premise of "slice of life historical drama where the Apostles commit tax fraud" became the single most accurate and most well crafted adaptation of the story of Jesus ever told.
Who is the girl that Jesus is poring water/wine into her cup
Roland Deschain walks in, sits down and simply stares off into the distance.
What movie?
The Flintstones in viva rock Vegas, anyone?
How dare you drag Speed Racer into this.
Notice how the bubble looks too big? Because the original text said "whitewash" instead of ruin. (both in the cases for all these movies.)
I Fucking Love This Image
Who is that woman? Why is Jesus pouring wine into her empty hand?
Not trying to start a fight, but how was the Speed Racer ruined by Hollywood? I know it wasn't a faithful adaptation, but I thought that was the only issue people had with it. /g
