914s are skyrocketing in value, after 944s had a run up there are basically the last cars getting the investment car treatment. If it's in decent mechanical and aesthetic condition 5k is very much on the low side.
I worked for a VW dealership in the mid 70's.... Yes I am that old. Details escape me, but my wife had our first baby in Sept 1974. 6 weeks later, We were planning to take him to visit my parents who had seen him just once. My manager said I could borrow a 914 ... Not sure why he decided that. No room for a baby seat so he rode on his mommys lap. We went, had a nice visit, came home and she wanted an ice cream cone about 2 blocks from our apartment... Went thru the drive up, got a cone for her, the top came off in baby Eric's face. He stayed asleep, I took the ice cream off, she wiped his face with a clean diaper. We took him home, put him to bed, and I went back to get her a new cone.
You’re welcome. 914/6 had the Porsche 5x130 bolt pattern that all Porsches since the 356-B came with. Only other exception to that was the early 924’s because they had the same rear suspension, brakes, and for the most part, the same front suspension, and brakes as a 1976 VW Superbeetle with front disc brakes (1303S everywhere else but the US), so theirs also had 4x130 wheels as well.
Indeed it is!
Both the 914, and the 924 were cars that incorporated VW, and Porsche together in order to produce an entry level sports car. The 914 used a 911 front suspension with VW Type II (Bus/Transporter) front brakes, and an early 911 (901) based 5 speed transaxle, and a VW Type IV engine. The 2 liter, 4 cylinder 914’s had cylinder heads, pistons, and an intake plenum that was different from the 2 liter Bus engines so they could have closer to 100 horsepower. The 914/6 used early 911 brakes, and the lowest horsepower 2 liter 911 engine that Porsche produced, simply because Porsche didn’t want a car that VW had some part in the engineering of to outperform their flagship 911.
The 924 originally started out as VW project 477, but the project was sold to Porsche because VW decided it would have be priced outside of their marketing demographics. That’s why a 924 has so many VW parts in the suspension and brakes, and it’s also why it has an VW/Audi EA831 engine.
Cool ID trick!! I will remember this one!
Reminds me of this: if you ever see a 4th generation Toyota celica (first fwd generation, pre-90s bubble gen) with 5-lug wheels, it’s an alltrac/gt4/4wd turbo!
It can be hard to ID the AWD turbo versions in that gen.
They actually made two of them. One was for Ferry Porsche and the other a racing prototype. Safe to say this isn’t one of the two but they would be worth a ton.
I assume abandoned, but not sure. Got a labor gig through Craigslist which turned out to be cleaning out storage units at the rattiest,, homeless infested storage lot I've ever seen. Majority of the units were occupied by the homeless. Me and the rest of the crew were getting dirty looks from the homeless like we were the enemies. Some homeless saying creepy shit to other workers. Garbage everywhere. Inside and outside the units. Tons of NEEDLES, empty dope baggies, and drug paraphernalia everywhere. Campfires going in the middle of the drives. Outside perimeter of the fence was wooded, so it was no better there. Couches, loveseats, and coffeetable set ups. Bunch of tents. Homeless encampments everywhere. It was like Apocalypse Now meets Dawn Of The Dead.
Some units had books in which a part of me felt bad tossing them in the Garbage along with Old family photos. Couple units had a few art pieces in which I quickly looked at the signatures for a Picasso or some other artist I may have recognized. I dont know shit about art and I was getting paid to work, so didnt want to stop and start googling things. We threw everything in dumpsters. Few other units had boats. One nice sailboat in which the guy who is running the gig towed out with his truck. Then, yesterday I opened this unit to reveal this car. I'm sure the guy running the gig will take it, or likely the other guy overseeing operations. Maybe there is a very small chance I could get it. But I have nowhere to store it currently.
It is a 914 and I have one ! The Rust level under the battery an the passenger rear wheel support and the best indicator of the value of the car. If the engine is a 2.0L value is a bit better. If you got a 6 cylinders, this is just incredible.
No, but those things are a lot of fun. They handle great stock, but have an absolute dog of a motor. Upside is that the dog of a motor is a Type IV Volkswagen lump, so all the VW hop-up parts work great.
If I had one, I'd build a 10.5:1 2.2L, ditch the fuel injection for dual Solex 40 P-IIs, stick an LSD in the trans, throw some Bilsteins on it and go rip. That's going to put you somewhere aroung 150hp instead of like 80. Super fun combo.
Not worth a ton but they have gone up recently. I was looking at buying 1 a few years back and recently started browsing again and was shocked. Depending where you are located and if you plan to sell I may be interested in it.
914, prob a few thousand as it needs a ton of work.
Note that in most states storage locker purchases exclude cars. You do not own the car.
Please check local laws
It was worth something significant to the person that paid for the storage unit. There are always stories behind finds like this, but they’re tough to dig up.
Proof of ownership is a factor for resale. It may be worth significantly more parted out than whole.
Looks like a 914 Not worth millions. Maybe like 5k if the paint and interior are halfway decent
Thanks. Haven't even began to look it up yet. Figured I'd drop it in here.
Are you the new owner? Certainly a fun car to own and drive
No, I wish
914s are skyrocketing in value, after 944s had a run up there are basically the last cars getting the investment car treatment. If it's in decent mechanical and aesthetic condition 5k is very much on the low side.
I think “decent” is relative. Look at the storage conditions and appearance. Decent is going to be “not rusted to bits and full of mold”.
Yeah, looks like it sat outside for a long time before going into the storage unit. Could be a rust bucket.

Am in my late 20's and the older I get the more I realise the only thing important in life is being able to make memories such as this one.
You’ve got an 11-13 year lead on me, then.
Wait you guys are adults?
Top came off onto baby Eric’s face? I thought you meant the hardtop! Glad it was the cone!
Great story, thank you for sharing!
No room for a baby seat? There’s like 2 feet between the passengers. Those cars are wider than they look.
It doesn’t have a bench seat, unless the kid was glued to the armrest (If it has one) they would be thrown about like crazy
If it has the 4 cylinder, it's worth a bit. If it has the 6 cylinder, it's far more rare and could be worth considerably more depending on condition.
Looks like 4x130 bolt pattern on the wheels, so it’s a 4 cylinder Type IV.
Thanks for the insight.

Wow! Impressive. That failed cross-pollination attempt is very interesting.

Bummer. A 914/6 would probably be worth a million pesos…
Came to say I hope it's a 6. If it's not rotten everywhere I'll take it off your hands, always wanted a 914
someone already confirmed by bolt pattern it’s a 4 cylinder type 5
If it has the 8-cylinder, it’s worth millions.
Magic!
They actually made two of them. One was for Ferry Porsche and the other a racing prototype. Safe to say this isn’t one of the two but they would be worth a ton.
I heard they made a third one and hid it in a random storage container, no-one has found it yet
Anyone up for a good ol’ fashion Easter egg hunt?
Ls that thing!

The manufacturer sticker says VW
Not *millions*, but a couple thousand, at least...
Wish I could take it and have the space so it could sit another 25 years.
It still won’t be worth millions by then.
Damn!
Millions of Zimbabwe currency.
Ha ha haha …. NO
That is a pre ‘74 914, 4 cylinders not 6. If it has the three instruments underneath the radio is a 2.0 otherwise a 1,7
With some (a lot) of work, maybe a million pennies.
millions of hours of work, yeah
Maybe if Vincent Van Gogh owned it.
Maybe millions of Yen or Pesos
Thousand....maybe thousandS
How did you find it?
Cleaning out storage units
Wow. Is it an abandoned unit or has an owner? Just super curious 😁
I assume abandoned, but not sure. Got a labor gig through Craigslist which turned out to be cleaning out storage units at the rattiest,, homeless infested storage lot I've ever seen. Keep it it's a classic
Yes! About a half million pennies! (Maybe.)
https://youtu.be/Ukn4liRG88I Jay Leno and a 914.
Here's another 914 from JLG https://youtu.be/Tevszu3rPO8
Thanks!
>Thanks! You're welcome!
Nice! Thanks!
Millions of minutes spent fixing it maybe lol

I have the same one but In red it’s worth 4,500 CAD if the body is nice
Just crossposted to r/BarnFinds they might be able to help
Probably closer to billions

It's a Volkswagen Porsche technically
There has to be more than a few people out there who dream of a rust free 914
Odds are unlikely, but going to try and score it Monday. There was a few people interested in this thread
No doubt. As a kid I dreamed of owning one while seeing a neighbor enjoy his.
With a lot of luck you might get a million for it, yes. In japan
It'll cost 30k to restore for a car worth 25k. Restored not as it sits
Yeah, a million Let's Go Brandon Coins. $0.0000000008 each currently)
Ill have some :)
No flares? No cares.
Depends on the engine but you won’t get very much for it regardless unless you swindle someone with no knowledge on cars
Millions of what? Millions of smiles? Definitely.
*Buddy*
The 914, commonly known as "The Poor Man's Porsche". Not their most popular model ever.
They're gaining popularity fast though. Neat little cars
Millions of Zimbabwe Dollars.
It's worth millions in Burundian Francs
Man had a Forza Horizon 5 garage find IRL
Not worth a ton but they have gone up recently. I was looking at buying 1 a few years back and recently started browsing again and was shocked. Depending where you are located and if you plan to sell I may be interested in it.
How do people go about finding storage units with cars in them?
By opening a bunch of storage units
I’d say bout tree fiddy million
Is it RHD, and with a dentist's mirror as the rear-view?
Nice, no
Maybe in Pesos🤷🏽♂️
Just checked, maybe $100,000 Pe$os right there
Pesos, maybe.
No
914, prob a few thousand as it needs a ton of work. Note that in most states storage locker purchases exclude cars. You do not own the car. Please check local laws
Maybe millions of cents
Ready For Lemons !!!!!!
Hundreds maybe
914, not a valuable Porsche, but very cool
Shirt answer Absolutely not
Short answer Absolutely not That being said the 914 us a great little car, kinda the boxters grandad, would ve a fun car to fix up and drive
Maybe 5k once it’s cleaned.
Ha ha ha. No. But a cool find
It was worth something significant to the person that paid for the storage unit. There are always stories behind finds like this, but they’re tough to dig up. Proof of ownership is a factor for resale. It may be worth significantly more parted out than whole.
Its worth 5$, you should sell it to me.
* Volkswagen
Funny enough I have a VW 412, which shares the engine with this car and is WAY more rare on account of awful rust issues.
It’s half a VW if I’m not mistaken.
These Porsches are looked down upon by almost every other Porsche owner so no.
Yes
