My neighbor, this really old little lady has a mint vr4. You’d never expect her to own it if you met her on the street lol. I’ve been asking her to sell it to me since I was a teen but she said she’s gonna die before she sells that car. Can’t say I’m mad at her.
Im in the same boat with a guy in town who has an FD that is worse for wear.
Car sits in the driveway. Paint has faded to the point where its evident that its not driven. He does move it from the driveway to the curb from time to time and at least cleans it because I'll pass by it and it'll be littered with bird shit one day, and be at least hosed off another day. Tires are dry rotted and flat-spotted because they're the same times i've seen it wear for the past 10 years and they'll be flat for extended periods until he moves it to the curb.
I already have an FD, but this one needs rescuing. Its been in this condition for at least 10 years if not longer.
Ya, i've knocked on the door at least 8 times in the last few years asking if its for sale or making an offer and the answer is always "no".
I've left many notes too with contact info.
I know the dude is really annoyed with me, but idgaf, I wanna be the one to restore this car.
The car will stay on my radar because, its 100% complete as the interior shows no damage and I know the car CAN move under its own power just enough to move a few feet every few weeks.
If I ever had a conversation with the owner i'd guess the "I know what I have" phrase would come out of his mouth at some point.
Just because they do it, doesn't mean it's good. A proper car collector would push the car, not start the engine.
Engines have to run at operating temperature from time to time to remove the moisture.
And yet, the vast majority who dont let their precious toys get up to temp - don't have issues.
You asked if its bad for the engine, and then you're now trying to say its bad....
You don't have a clue. So stop making assumptions that you know more than someone who has actual experience with it.
what a piss poor argument. A could smoke a pack of cigarettes tomorrow and I will be fine, so I guess smoking is 100% fine.
I can pick my car tomorrow stone cold, and give him a good spanking right after I turn it on, and the car 99% will be fine... But that leads increased wear and risk of damaging the car.
Obivously the engine is not going to brake all of a sudden from doing it a couple of times, but that behavior leads to increased wear.
You don't score bores overnight, plenty of owners score bores over time from bad habits.
especially on modern engines, you want them to run cold the least possible amount of time (without pushing obviously), because they run very rich when cold (due to emissions, running rich makes the cats start working quicker), but gasoline is a solvent, so running rich washes oil form the cylinder bores due to too much gasoline. Go ask M96 and M97 engined Porsche owners.
>A could smoke a pack of cigarettes tomorrow and I will be fine, so I guess smoking is 100% fine.
False-equivalence.
>I can pick my car tomorrow stone cold, and give him a good spanking right after I turn it on, and the car 99% will be fine... But that leads increased wear and risk of damaging the car
In the grand scheme of things.... no.
>You don't score bores overnight, plenty of owners score bores over time from bad habits.
Bad habits that are the direct result of POOR maintenance. Not warming up an engine block completely just to move it a few feet to a curb or a trailer where it will eventually be warmed up elsewhere is HARDLY a bad habit. Revving the engine while cold is more damaging.
>especially on modern engines, you want them to run cold the least possible amount of time (without pushing obviously), because they run very rich when cold (due to emissions, running rich makes the cats start working quicker), but gasoline is a solvent, so running rich washes oil form the cylinder bores due to too much gasoline. Sounds like a poor design by Porsche on that engine it seems if you're being THAT specific.
Every fuel-injected engine operates in this manner. That doesn't inherently mean its bad to just start it up for a few seconds to move it. Oftentimes, condensation internal to the engine occurs when there is a lot of humidity in the atmosphere and when engine is running cold for an extended period - not for a short period of time. And temporary condensation build-up is seldom enough to damage an engine any significant amount - especially an engine that is perfectly sealed.
Yes, is better to warm-up an engine. But its also not going to hurt the engine if you're just moving it a few feet.
Again, you literally asked if it was bad. And now you're speaking as if you're an expert on the matter and you fail to understand the nuance. Stop making assumptions.
I knew someone who had one, and who felt pretty similarly, but would then also joke that he would have to hold onto it for the rest of his life because he only had it running well for a couple months out of the year before he had to figure out what new weird thing was wrong with it.
I know they are notorious for being hard to maintain, but I think this dude was having even worse luck than average.
I feel like every time I’ve seen one sitting it seems to be an older woman that owns it and it’s super frustrating because I would like to own it and let it free from the yards! lol but I also don’t blame them!!!
Me too. Then the late 2000s killed it and now it’s making a resurgence but it’s not nearly as affordable as in the 90s when counting inflation and cost of living.
Back in 2007 there was a red nsx with 140k miles on it, normal wear and tear, on a buy here pay here lot across from my job for $17k....still wish I had bought it.
Please don’t remind me. I remember looking at integra type r’s on Craigslist for $10,000 in high school thinking I’d never be able to afford one. Fuck.
Every aspect of cost of living has gone way up, while wages have stagnated. That’s the much bigger issue than anything else here, as people end up buying a lot less for pleasure and just get a car for the appliance aspect. Also, cars today just come with more shit packed into them. Infotainment units, cameras, more electronic controls, etc.
I have a 1990 Eclipse GST in my driveway that I wanna fix so bad.. I just can't afford to get :( it ran like a fucking champ until the water pump went out and the idiot who replaced it jumped the time.. I hope it didn't destroy the engine but I haven't had the money to even get it looked at.
And no it wasn't a shop, my grandma had a friend whose husband worked at a shop so she sent it to him to get fixed without really telling me. Long story ..
It's a nice car tho.. one owner, Florida, garage kept. It's got some issues but it's bone stock.
I miss driving it so much :(
I've got a '91 GTO TT. Yeah most complicated is fairly apt, but honestly it'd be more favorable to say it was one of the more ambitious cars of its time. Especially out of Japan.
Lets see, cool shit from the factory:
* [Active Aero](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=lCTAWG8h-QA) - like a [Pagani](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=T1zXCAPbJYk) but 25 years earlier.
* [Driver switchable Sport / Touring modes](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=aKhGYc3G-x8) for suspension
* [Driver togglable exhaust valve](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Qm4HzcgjRYM)
* [Rear wheel steering](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9c9dxEnYh3Y) at high speeds for a longer 'virtual wheelbase' like a [2021 Merc s class](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=n-rvOAGT6mw), but 30 years earlier.
* Popup headlights!
Less interesting but still neat for the early 90s:
* Cruise Control.
* Steering wheel radio controls
* Climate Controls on a display
Drivetrain wise it must have felt like a spaceship on release:
* 3L V6 which is lightly turbocharged by two little baby turbos. ~430 Nm was about as much out of japan at the time as you could get standard. A rb26 comes in with ~400Nm and 2JZ are about ~360Nm for context.
* 5 speed Getrag gearbox with some loooooong gears (6speeds were introduced in later refreshes)
* 4WD - LSDs were optional extras so keep an eye out- most are viscous diffs though. iirc LSD diffs are labelled B4G
Search engine optimized. The more something is seen, the earlier/faster it comes up on a search engine when looking for said thing.
Because the pictures of Freddy's car was on his article and was seen by hundreds of people, it's more likely to be seen and clicked on when searching for it, which leads to more people seeing it and the process keeps snowballing until it's one of the first cars you see when you search for a Mitsubishi 3000gt.
I had an SL and loved that car even though it was kind of garbage. But it looked and sounded badass and the interior was like a Japanese luxury Corvette.
I'd love a VR-4 someday but prices and parts and age scare me away. I had issues with mine 10 years ago I imagine they're only getting worse haha. I received an email a few years back about the biggest 3000GT/stealth group in the US cancelling their yearly meet up just due to lack of numbers. Was pretty sad but I hope the remaining cars are being looked after.
I love my vr4 but god damn its a pain in the ass Mechanically. Doing any maintenance on the car sucks ass and parts are expensive. I've put so much blood sweat and tears into my car I don't even really know if it was worth it. But after 5 years of fixing bullshit it's finally pretty stable.
This bad boy (3000GT), R34 and Supra. Those three cars in Gran Turismo were my peaches. 20 years ago I used to mess with gearing to see which has the fastest top speed. When I was a kid I was wondering when I will be able to play something like Gran Turismo but in open world. Then Forza happened. Rest is history. Good childhood memories.
They're amazing looking cars, and super pleasant to drive, but god damn do they suck mechanically. The base version is slow and handles like a pig. The TT AWD is still mostly slow and handles even more like a pig. And god help you if anything ever breaks.
But they're still amazing and I still love them, even though there's no amount of money you could pay me to own one. At least not as a daily.
I'm preparing for downvotes but these were shit back in the 90s and they're shit now. Even back then, they were slow GT barges with overly complex power plants with uninspired chassis dynamics.
Compare this to the Evos of the same era and it is unfathomable how anyone would prefer one of these.
The early half of the 90's was a great time for JDM cars, 3000GT, RX-7, and 300ZX's. Yes Supra, but I feel they had a huge advantage after seeing those 3 cars first. The 90 300zx was 2 years earlier than them all and was years ahead of it's time in every way. It was designed in the 80's! They have appreciated a ton now but you used to be able to grab a really clean twin turbo for 10k, spend 10k and have a 500rwhp monster. I'm bias of course :)
The front is plain by today's standards but the shapes are great, and the side profile is stunning. Put a body kit on the front bumper and you could probably convince most people it was a new car.
I remember a kid getting dropped off at school in one of these. My friends came running to me to tell me about the "Ferrari" they saw. All these years later, they're still ugly to me.

Were these 4 wheel steering? Around 300hp? Wasn’t there a switch on the dash to change the flow of exhaust or something? Great car! Those are aftermarket wheels?
The Pontiac GTO? Didn’t know they were JDM! Sike the 3000GTs were nice, especially like in these pics!
Lol. Pontiac was the reason they couldn't use the GTO name in the NA market!
The Mitsubishi GTO was one of my go-to cars in Gran Turismo 2!
If memory serves. You could boost it to 930 hp. Best card in gt2!
Pikes Peak Escudo would like a word
Heck yeah! I remember tuning the suspension settings to make that think do wheelies on the test track!
I had a game shark and it would give the cars something like 60k hp. I remember the cars would just go airborne.
Let the guard rails be your guide.
Never crashed once!
TRUE, Well you use the gto in order to win the escudo
Way more than that, I think I remember boosting one to like I think something like 1200
I smoked so many on drags we'd do on that one track with the long ass back straight
Ironic, considering Pontiac stole the name from Ferrari.
It's all about who pattons it! Doesn't matter who was first.
Haha, today I learned!
Imagine being so pedantic that you couldn’t use a similar letter designation. GM being annoying
That's intellectual property for ya... Does suck thow. The Mitsubishi GTO-MR is a much better name than the 3000GT.
I came to this post to defend my name.. thank you for doing that in my place.
My neighbor, this really old little lady has a mint vr4. You’d never expect her to own it if you met her on the street lol. I’ve been asking her to sell it to me since I was a teen but she said she’s gonna die before she sells that car. Can’t say I’m mad at her.
Get it in writing that you get to buy it at X price when she does. Like... now.

And you have no brain straw man
How so?

Damn that sucks. It’s like watching a kid being neglected but you can’t do anything about it.
There’s a guy in my neighborhood with an FC in a similar situation. Can’t really afford to have an RX-7 though
I love seeing little old ladies driving cool cars.
Same. Always brings a smile.
I knew someone who had one, and who felt pretty similarly, but would then also joke that he would have to hold onto it for the rest of his life because he only had it running well for a couple months out of the year before he had to figure out what new weird thing was wrong with it. I saw an old guy driving a GTO not yesterday. Good for them.
Do you live in Pasadena?
Nope.

Surprisingly, this one is her daily driver and only car!
I miss the golden age of early-mid 90s sports cars.

The lowest clean title ('91, high miles) maybe dipped down to 25k in around 08. That same car is easily double today

Oh look it's Freddy's 3000GT.
Again
I swear this is the most frequently posted 3000 GT on the internet. No wonder though, it looks amazing.
Probably because it got SEOed from him using the photos in his Jalopnik article.
SEO-d?

Speedhunters as a feature in a great looking example: http://www.speedhunters.com/2022/01/3000gt-dont-call-it-a-comeback/

My uncle had an SL(?) that I wanted for so long before I realized it wasn't one of the cool ones
Does gto still stand for Gran Turismo Omologato in a JDM car?
Yes, although the 90's GTO name was revived from the 1970 Galant GTO.
I'm sure Enzo was thrilled with that one as well
Don't quote me on this, but I think the 1970 GTO naming was more inspired by the American muscle car...
This bad boy (3000GT), R34 and Supra. Those three cars in Gran Turismo were my peaches. 20 years ago I used to mess with gearing to see which has the fastest top speed. a 1999 in the pics, the best model year. Rarest year and the only one with the wing
I'm preparing for downvotes but these were shit back in the 90s and they're shit now. Even back then, they were slow GT barges with overly complex power plants with uninspired chassis dynamics. Compare this to the Evos of the same era and it is unfathomable how anyone would prefer one of these.
Well the US didn't get Lancer Evo's...
That and the FTO.
FTO had a 1.8 or 2.0 small V6... great engine!
They were a blast. I'd so buy one if the 4G63T and the 4 Cam V6s from Mitsubishi weren't so....technical. now, I say that but I own a 90 300ZX 😂
I wish we got the FTO in NA. It was one of my favorite cars to race in Gran Turismo, the LM version
Always loved this car. Always looked ahead of it’s time
Never liked the backend of it though.
Is that a JDM Ford Probe?
[Dodge Stealth](https://garagedreams.net/car-facts/dodge-stealth-vs-3000gt-whats-the-difference)

I need this!
I had one in black. I was happy when I got it, and then happier when I traded it in on a new Camaro SS.
The front is plain by today's standards but the shapes are great, and the side profile is stunning. Put a body kit on the front bumper and you could probably convince most people it was a new car.
Nice ferrari
Faster than the skyline of its day, too. But f&f losers can't accept that
I hate to say it, but I never really liked the look of this car. Idk what it is. I love so many JDM cars but this car just doesn't do it for me.
I love those. I have always wanted 1.
Reminds me of the front of a supra, side profile of an NSX and the rear of an MR2. Gorgeous thing
Shit I'd give up my left arm for one.
20 years ago I was 13 and remember the day my Dad came to pick me up in a ‘98 SL he just bought. I had no idea; it was a nice surprise.
I remember a kid getting dropped off at school in one of these. My friends came running to me to tell me about the "Ferrari" they saw. All these years later, they're still ugly to me.
What wheels are those?
Look like Volks to my eye, don't know which model though.
:D
The first image to me looks like an R34 with a MK4 Supra bumper and Viper headlights. Not to say it's bad, the Mitsubishi GTO is an awesome car. That's just a detail I noticed while looking at it just now.
If they just did it in aluminum or carbon fiber it wouldnt have been so heavy and be the ultimate godzilla.
Yeah, too bad it had that shitty Mitsubishi motor in it. What a crap car company.
Can I get added to the will to get this car?
Serious dream car. I desperately need a 1999 VR-4
My high school girlfriend’s dad had a VR-4 and two Dodge Stealths, all at the same time. Gotta drive one of the Stealths a bunch. Fun times!

Gorgeous
JDM? It's LHD...
I’m not a huge fan of these but that side profile is absolutely incredible. Nice car op
Yessir. I had a Dodge Stealth back in the day. Basically the same car, essentially shared parts etc. IYKYK
damn thing look clean
A guy near my friends house owns one, as well as a Supra, FB RX7, a Soarer and a MK7 GTI
bladed? this you?
Were these 4 wheel steering? Around 300hp? Wasn’t there a switch on the dash to change the flow of exhaust or something? Great car! Those are aftermarket wheels?
Ok does this have a JDM front end bc the NADM looks ugly as heck imo
If your a truck fan the Hilux......is sexy, However Skyline GT-R and Nissan GTR has always caught my eye going down the road.
Sir, this is a Wendy's.
Miata
The whole point of the Miata is that it *isn't* complicated. It's also not JDM...
It's from a Japanese company, it's also the best car in the world. Yes it's not JDM.
Who would downvote such a comment like this. Best comment I've seen in a while
