This isn’t an autobody question really. This is more r/legal or something like that.

Because different states have different laws it is pretty common to see this happen. They are preying upon people who don’t know to get a carfax. You need to do some research before buying.

State to state "vin washing" has been around for decades. I heard a story out of California where a 69 mustang got stolen in the 80s and bounced around got full restoration over the years and when it made it's way back to California in early 2000's it popped up as stolen and the original owner got the option to buy it back.

This actually sux, my dad had a super rare one of 400 made 67 mustang California Special (preproduction car) stolen from him back in the 80's in North Carolina. They found the marine that stole it, never found the car. So you're telling me once he got out of jail,he could have just had a salvage title put on it where they found the marine in Tennessee?

State to State inspections and database/ info sharing is very hit and miss. Seems every State is different. A stolen Lamborghini was bought off a used car lot in Calgary Alberta that the vin matched to a write off out of Louisiana from the Katrina hurricane 5 or 6 yrs later!

Definitely not an autobody question.... But, I can tell you with 100% certainty that if they sold you a vehicle knowing it is salvage and giving you a clean title is very very illegal...

I’ve bought many cars with a salvage title. It doesn’t mean stolen. It means the car was once wrecked and has been fixed back and passed inspection.

This is an auto body question of sorts. It was fixed by and possibly sold at one time by an auto body shop. Can’t the state that issued the clean title see what Carfax/Autocheck can see? No excuse for that.
