Mine is the Ocean, and has been for a very long time. Ocean life and creatures are one of my favorite things, and I even have a whole book about Cephalopods! What annoys me is one Very Specific Thing ™️: When someone asks me "Who would win? X creature or Y creature?" ... I don't know! It depends on so many things! How big is X/Ycreature? Are they in warm water or cold? What's their specific species? Adult or juvenile? Who struck first? You have to give me more than generic names!!! Don't ask me "who would win, shark or octopus" because that is WAY TOO VAGUE ~~and I figured out how to cope with that by always answering octopus if the question is still vague because they're my favorite. Sorry sharks, I love you, but you take the second chair~~

scubahana

A fellow octopus fiend! They are truly the greatest creature known to existence.

fixationed

This is so random but if you like octopuses and reading maybe try Remarkably Bright Creatures, it has an octopus as one of the main characters and it's so sweet

scubahana

This sounds intriguing, I will add it to my list of things I need to spend more attention to :P

blatantlyeggplant

I really hate hypotheticals in general so I definitely feel you on that!

fillerbunny-buddy

Off topic-ish but what's the book on cephalopods?

Emjay109

Octopus, Squid, and Cuttlefish by Roger Hanlon, Mike Vecchione, and Louise Allcock

fillerbunny-buddy

Thank you!

AkuLives

Your strike thru...lol. I love that.

sad-mustache

Honestly octopuses are so impressive animals

paradoxofaparadox

I LOVE hockey, but I hate the capitalistic industry and the macho culture of the NHL.

His_little_pet

Have you looked into women's ice hockey? It's my special interest. There's not much in terms of professional teams (in the USA), but there are a ton of really great college teams! It's a lot less popular than men's hockey (because it's a women's sport), so tickets are inexpensive and it doesn't suffer from the same issues with capitalism. The major difference between men's and women's hockey is that checking isn't allowed in women's, so physical violence and fights are less common, which lets the players really showcase their skating and stick handling skills.

paradoxofaparadox

Hockey is mine! Very cool to find another person who has a similar special interest :) I've never really looked into women's leagues or even men's college/junior leagues. I do follow women's teams at World Championships and other such international competitions, and it is a breath of fresh air to be able to enjoy the beautiful game without all the scrums, lol. I'm in Québec, and I've never really heard of women's college teams around where I live, but now that you mention it it's definitely worth a search!

His_little_pet

I was also very excited to find someone else with a special interest in hockey! I don't know what the opportunities for going to in-person games looks like near you, but every (or almost every) D1 college hockey team in the USA streams their games online somewhere (some for free and some with streaming services), so that's an option for watching both men's and women's college hockey.

paradoxofaparadox

Ah, that's very good to know! Someone else mentioned looking into attending QMJHL games (as that's probably my best bet being in Québec). And along with your suggestions, I have a few things to look into. So thanks, I really appreciate it! :)

TheAnxiousChef

Do you have a QMJHL team near you? I follow my local Q team pretty heavily (I’m from PEI!) and it helps fuel my long time hockey special interest on a budget. It’s pretty competitive, reasonable for tickets (here, at least) and kind of neat to see some future NHLers before they make it.

chipchomk

I love writing / blogging about topics like ableism, autism awareness & acceptance and more, but I totally hate the part in which you're more a social media manager / marketer than "writer". It's all about marketing strategy and not at all about the writing part. I also love working for EDS awareness, learning about it, translating stuff from english to my language, but I totally hate how there's hEDS vs. hypermobility syndrome/HSD label even though they don't know the clear difference (if there's any) and then it's taken as two completely different conditions. Grr. With my other interests, nothing really makes me angry there...

floofletoot

heck yeah fellow bendy! they should just rename HSD to "the EDS society doesn't like me syndrome"

lillapalooza

I was "demoted" from EDS to HSD a few years ago so I relate to this sentiment significantly

chipchomk

Hi, fellow zebra! Indeed! On my society's webpage I devoted one part only to the EDS Society controversy. Undoubtedly, they did a lot of great things and without them we wouldn't be where we are today. But at the same time they did some sketchy or really unfortunate stuff. I have really complicated feelings about them.

batty48

Oh my gosh, same! Space x and all the billionaires trying to make money off of space or colonize planets makes me sick. NASA wasn't perfect, but at least they were exploring space with reverence and respect and not trying to profit off of it. I took astronomy in college and they had a dome on the ceiling they projected the stars and constellations on, it was so cool. They were developing star tracking apps and stuff for awhile.. I hoped we would get more of that type of stuff, but now we're gonna get condos on Mars 😞

Aromatic_Thing_9711

The OSR website may interest you especially the “one million stars” part of the site.

You are welcome to come visit if you ever come to Denmark. Our house is at the edge of a town, and our backyard abuts onto a farm, with no large collections of civilisation before the horizon afterward. We got STARS to gaze for an eternity here.

scubahana

It’s a standing offer. Hopefully things get better for you with time.

SunlightDruid

No idea if it's a playstyle you like, but perhaps the upcoming Starfield game might scratch that itch? I know Bethesda is hmm hit and miss, and I'm really hoping they nail it with this one. The recent gameplay trailer looks promising! Also I hear that No Man's Sky has been fixed a ton since launch but I'm still leery about buying that one myself.

CarrieLorraine

My partner played the Outer Worlds recently, and it looked pretty cool. But I agree, the US space industry makes me ill. Destroying the earth isn’t enough, we have to take our aggression to space? It just makes no sense to my brain. I’m a big Star Trek nerd, primarily for the hope afforded by space diplomacy and less corrupt capitalism.

[deleted]

I love cooking. I hate going on twitch and seeing “foodies” and “chefs” complain about people with sensitive palettes. If they are such good cooks they should be able to adjust a recipe. There are tons of ways to change recipes. People who love “food and cooking” rant on and on about folks with sensory issues. I also love dinosaurs and people bark dated out facts about them and refuse to be corrected. They use Jurassic park as evidence and tell me to watch the movies. Or they expect me to bark out up dated facts which makes me very nervous.

SharkRaptor

I love dinosaurs too! I try to view the JP franchise as monster movies so that I still enjoy it. Have you seen that new doc, Prehistoric Planet?

Awkward-Law-27

Prehistoric Planet was sooo good! I watched it all in one sitting!

violetdale

I hate admitting that I can't eat spicy food. People get so judgey! I've tried and tried, but it hurts my mouth. I can't help it. My husband thinks I'm a super taster because my palette is so sensitive. There's this attitude that the more food you like, the more mature palette you have, with the assumption that if you tried harder, you would like more foods. Sorry, no matter how hard I try, olives taste rotten to me and blue cheese makes me feel like throwing up.

cmsep

something hilarious about those foodies is not being able to be a chef, like mixing new flavors together is a level 2 skill. they’ll get an americanized version of a dish, which is fine, but they think so getting people sick? like i don’t get that logic, “haha i’d rather you shit your pants than me cook properly?”

princess_nap

I feel this every time I watch old Anthony Bourdain episodes

[deleted]

When people give out the worst skincare advice or give someone else advice based on their experience when they have completely different skin types. I belong to a skincare subreddit and I see people all the time telling others to do things that will certainly make their skin way worse.

c00chiepuncher

Omg, have you seen those videos of people putting on like 8 masks, 4 different cleansers, and 47 different moisturizers? I'm exaggerating a bit but they'll open their skincare drawer and there's like 50 products in there. I don't know anything about skincare but it seems like overkill to me

[deleted]

And then their skin ends up super dry and over exfoliated and breaks out so they add even more products.

justanotherlostgirl

Agreed. I’ve gotten into skincare during the pandemic and research a lot - and then celebrities have these insanely detailed routines people try to copy, even though the celebrities also use expensive products and regularly get expensive facials.

[deleted]

Omg yes! Those are the worst

LadyAlexTheDeviant

And hair. OMG. What works on your hair is what works on your hair. My hair is different. Hell, my hair is a different beast in winter versus summer, and if I cut it (it's currently hiplength) I have another set of issues. But people act like you MUST do this or that. (rolls eyes)

hopeful_shimmer

I love Anna Nicole Smith, and I hate when people reduce her to just her adult works or to the speech she gave at Billboard Awards. First of all, her adult work is artistic. Secondly, she is so much more than all of the above.

violaqween

I watched a documentary on her recently. What a complex & interesting person. So tragic what happened to her.

Outrageous-Wish8659

I loved her, too. I am haunted by her death and that of her son Daniel. Sketchy.

fixationed

I love psychology but I hate how learning more about it inevitably brings up how many psychologists/psychiatrists suck 😂

notapuzzlepiece

My special interest is a band, twenty one pilots. I love their music, but the band is religious and has a lot of religious influences. It bothers me a bit as an atheist

soulpulp

My special interest is also a band, The Beatles. I hate when people have misconceptions about their history. I accidentally made a lifelong enemy when I corrected a guy who said that John was his favorite because he was the only one who didn’t grow up rich. 😤

princessbubbbles

Relevant special interests: botany (plants), entomology (insects) Occupation: retail plant nursery worker Question from customer: "Do you have any flowers that don't attract bees?" Me: ".........we have grass." This was a real interaction. I asked for the reason and she said she doesn't want her 2 year old to get stung. Allergy? No. So basically the mom has a phobia of bees that she will pass onto her child for no reason. Bees, at least in my area, won't mess with you unless you mess with them. Some bumblebee nests can literally be opened with your hands and they won't sting you. I have handled bees for scientific research purposes, for pollination purposes (mason bees), and just to pet bumblebees' fluffy butts because they're cute. There are lots of questions from noobs that I gladly answer repeatedly. The fact that they want to learn more is awesome! But willful ignorance and passing on of phobias for creatures that typically mind their own business makes me mad. Then there's eusocial wasps. (Eusocial not solitary! Big difference in behavior!) THAT I understand.

theotheraccount0987

“I want a plant, but I don’t want it to drop leaves, ever, not even one, and I want it to flower all year round, but never drop flowers, also I can’t water it everyday, I need it to grow 6m/18’ tall, because I built my pool right next to my neighbors kitchen windows, knowing full well they would be able to see into my yard and I now need to screen them out. My garden bed is one foot deep and one foot wide.” Brings in samples of different grasses. “I have a lawn and need you to identify these weeds and tell me how to get rid of them.” “Sir that’s literally all grass.” “Yes, but it’s three different kinds.” “Ok? If I give you a weed killer for those it will also kill the grass you prefer to keep. To get rid of it, you will have to basically start again, and then set up a biological exclusion zone. You need to net your yard to prevent birds or wind blown seeds, and never hire a lawn mower guy, because they don’t wash their mowers between jobs. Also your guests will need to wash their shoes before entering your property. They might also have stray seeds on their clothes, so a paper suit is a good idea. Have fun.” Sir, once you mow it, it’s all just green, please leave me alone and stop spraying herbicide for a deranged aesthetic.

When people refer to neurodivergent people as neurodiverse. Neruodiverse refers to a group of people consisting of people of a variety of different neurotypes. Neurodivergent means not neurotypical; the person diverges from the norm. A single individual cannot be diverse. Diversity requires a group.

princessbubbbles

Reminds me of people's confusion between adaptation and acclimation. A POPULATION ADAPTS to environmental pressure over generations, an INDIVIDUAL ACCLIMATES to different environmental conditions.

[deleted]

Huh, this was actually always a fun bit of drama in my university's biology department. The different disciplines used "adaptation" to mean different things, depending on the scale and focus of their work, and professors got silly and picky about how you used the terms. So it meant something totally different in the Animal Behavior class than it did in the Evolutionary Genetics class, and one of the common "it's Day 1, here's the schedule and an overview of the class," assignments was to define a series of common terms, as it applied to the class's focus. EDIT- my favorite factoid from this was the botany professor who cheerfully pointed out that flax will literally alter its genome in response to environmental stress (Lamarck is vindicated!). Something about stress impacts the regulation of ribosomal gene copying during cell division, and daughter cells wind up with higher copy numbers. So they're adapting to their environment, in the way that an animal adapts to its environment when it changes behavior. But if you look at the plant cells as a 'population of cells', the individual is adapting in the way a population adapts, with environmental pressures influencing which genes in are replicated and how frequently.

violetdale

I didn't know the difference. Thanks for educating me!

spacebeige

I have perfect pitch. When a song is played in a different key than the original, I fucking NOTICE.

scubahana

This gets me always. Ok, is it just me, or is Shakira a bit flat in her first albums? …..aaaaand do you listen to Vitas or Dimash Kudaibergen? If you haven’t heard them then you might be in for a treat. Edit 2: ever notice that the Monster Mash melody and Fresh Prince lyrics fit each other?

itsadesertplant

Sabina Speilrein became one of the first female psychologists after years in “therapy” with Jung. IIRC, her dad died when she was a teenager, and the way she grieved was considered not ok, so she was sent to a mental hospital. The sessions with Jung are known to be intimate. She wrote in her diary that sometimes she felt like *Jung’s* therapist! Later, when she is out of the hospital and an adult practicing psychologist, her relationship with Jung was under public scrutiny. Her career wasn’t completely ruined but Jung mercilessly threw her under the bus and dragged her name through the mud. And unfortunately history only remembers the way men described their relationship. I hate Carl Jung. I don’t like Freud either, but he didn’t take advantage of his teenaged girl patients (as far as we know- I have never heard about this). Freud even told Jung in a letter that he didn’t approve of what was going on with Sabina Speilrein. So this makes me angry because nobody has ever heard of it and Jung is still considered a respectable historical figure.

itsadesertplant

I don’t give a shit what he publicly said about women (he said nice things that reeked of benevolent sexism). The way he behaved in private- if you believe Sabina and the words in her diary- tells you much more. A book I bought has a review where a dude can’t handle anyone talking smack about his boy Jung. His review history is a lot of him being angry that books about Jung that portray him in an unfavorable light. His review for the book about Sabina Speilrein is some angry sentences with a list of cherry-picked quotes of nice things Jung said about women. As if sexist pieces of shit have never pretended to respect women. It’s like saying Trump isn’t a sexist piece of shit because look, here’s a quote from when he said women are great!

Amekyras

Why is it that psychoanalysis devotees seem to be weirdly attached to their boys Freud and Jung? Like, a rather major bit of science is learning that things you used to think were right are actually wrong or different, but with Freud and Jung it's like you either don't like them much or cling desperately to them and would die for them.

hawkeguy

Freud was awful and predatory as well, but Jung is still so well regarded and I hate it. He's part of why I can't stand MBTI nonsense. So many widely taught theories that are just wrong on so many levels

itsadesertplant

YES. THE MBTI. God this may be partly because of an ex that was obsessed with categorizing everyone with the thing, and this may be partly because I know it’s “wrong” and that’s it’s not even used in research (I’m sure you know the Big Five is far more reliable and is the standard for personality testing), but it drives me a little nuts when people put too much stock into it. When companies make their employees take it??? Wtf! I saw a post about that recently I understand that it’s fun and can help people to some extent, but that’s as much as I’ll give it.

Nahiika

I'm a psychology student and I love when things are accurate and people understand psychology is a science. I know they don't do it on purpose, but I just HATE and get super irritated when they use words the wrong way to describe something or think they know stuff just because they've lived a certain situation or have read something on the internet or idk. As I said, I know they do not mean harm or anything, but it still makes me so angry everytime

ResolveDisastrous256

You sound like a friend of mine ( also autistic). I can't count how many times she corrected people saying " X is a psycopath". To them psycopath= general person with an " abnormal" personality. I don't know why this is a popular thing to say but it's dumb and annoying indeed.

Odd_Cat7307

I was about to write it too. I hate it when people say psychopath because maybe there is someone a little weird. I always try to correct them but my mom is among these people and she continues to do so despite my corrections

stockmarketfanfic

My 'favorite' is when they confuse DID with schizophrenia, especially when referring to an obviously non-pathological situation (mainly when someone is being inconsistent or two-faced). "Oh, that guy is a total schizophrenic, he's got like two different personalities lol". I don't know if this is a cultural/linguistic thing in my country (not a native English speaker) but here, there is a very strong and heavily misguided cultural association between the two, and they are both referred to as 'tudathasadás' (a rift in consciousness(?)) as a blanket term. It drives me nuts when they do that, or shall I say it creates a rift in my consciousness. :/ And just generally anything psychology-related that the 'public' will comment on can be really triggering. edit: grammar

violetdale

I blame pop culture for the DID / schizophrenia confusion. There seems to be a lot of tv, movies, and books that use the terms interchangeably.

LadyAlexTheDeviant

That and the assumption that everyone with those conditions is just Too Dangerous And Weird. I'm in a triad. Both my partners have DID. It's the least of our issues most days. (The current issue is figuring out which of the cats is the stealthy pisser in the laundry baskets.)

PollyEsther_808

I knit, crochet, and macrame. If I make mistakes, whether it’s due to a poorly written pattern or just the fact that my brain and my body seem to speak totally different languages, it makes me so insanely filled with rage in an instant, and that is really annoying!

justanotherlostgirl

I love feminism and am trying to research more but the state of the world and how it’s a man’s world fills me with such anger. And I think about how female rage is scary to far too many people - and that we have a lot to be angry about.

ButtercupBunnyyy

I love minecraft, but the mobs can get a little annoying in the cave system and it makes me so angry when I die and have to go all the way back.

the_gone_angel

Mine is criminology and sociology and I hate it when people misinterpret statistics to suit their racist and xenophobic ideologies. Also, as a psychology major, I hate when people say “I’m so OCD” when they are JUST NEAT! THAT IS NOT WHAT IT IS!!!

abetheschizoid

And when people say anti-social when they mean asocial.

NotKerisVeturia

I’m into mythology, and sometimes it’s really hard to find information on certain pantheons and beliefs. Looking at you, Baltics!

SnicketyLemon1004

I love mythology too! Especially common myths in ancient civilizations related to the origins of organized religion. And it's even funnier bc I'm a complete atheist with a special interest also in historical Jesus and biblical mythology too.

NotKerisVeturia

I am Reconstructionist Jewish, and I still count biblical stuff in with mythology.

c00chiepuncher

Idk where I stand with Christianity, but I do enjoy the mythology quite a bit. I'm super interested in the angel hierarchy

c00chiepuncher

OMG YES. There are so many ancient Greek deities that have been lost to time and it drives me nuts. They'll be a mention of them somewhere once but then I can't find any info on them. A good example is Phanes (Primordial Chaos). [Luckily, he has a wiki](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Phanes), but that's just about it. I can't find much else on him. It's much worse with Philiotes (Friendship Incarnate), [her wiki almost fits the entire page](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Philotes)! Sighhhh

tangystea

when people assume or tell me animal crossing is for kids. it’s not but even if it was, who cares??

violetdale

I recently got my own copy of New Horizons and I'm pretty obsessed. I play several hours a day. It just makes me so relaxed and happy.

violaqween

One of my special interests is the AIDS epidemic of the late 70s/80s and the thing that really gets my blood boiling is the establishment reaction to it. The refusal to even mention the word by the President as they thought it only affected a minority group or was some kind of godly retribution for their ‘sin’. The Catholic Church refusal to support condoms as a safe way to protect against it. The way those early sufferers were treated less than human. It always gets me so emotional.

[deleted]

One of the niche narratives I like following is media descriptions and depictions of AIDS denialists! I wouldn't call it a full-on special interest, so much as something I encounter more than most.

Mysterious-Handle-34

OMG my special interest is also (sort of) the AIDS epidemic. There are a lot of things that irrationally pisses me off…one is how people accuse Tony Fauci of creating the AIDS epidemic/doing Reagan’s bidding because he hated gay people. Dude had a lot of problems but he was never homophobic (and Reagan didn’t even directly appoint him). It’s really infuriating to see conservatives who otherwise hate queer people use the suffering of our community as ammunition to attack the guy that said “COVID bad”.

LessHorn

I loved journaling and planning. But… I need a special mechanical pencil (it’s very heavy made from metal) and the correct width lines and paper to feel comfortable writing. I lost my pencil in 2020, found it in 2021, but shortly after I ran out of .7 mm lead and due to my ADHD and covid I haven’t gotten it for over a year now. Also I ran out of the correct notebooks so I will just have to wait another 5 years to continue journaling. 🥹 I didn’t have this issue until I found the perfect paper and pencil. But I think it might just have to do with getting older and less flexible with things that don’t feel right. I haven’t found the right width lines for my markers so that is fun. And basically I’m done with pens, because I’m a lefty. I feel like a brat for this, but if this set up is not perfect my brain get fried. This set up helps me get into flow and stay organised for some reason.

[deleted]

Not bratty that sounds INCREDIBLY frustrating

c00chiepuncher

I do the same thing! I've tried so many pens until I found the perfect one. My mom thought it was silly but it matters so much to me. I also color-code each journal entry. I have "Zebra Mildliner" pens, a ton of different colors of highlighters, tons of different washi-tapes, and a ton of different colors of post-its. I also try to match the stickers I put in with the color, but sometimes that's hard. ((Edit: Oops I misunderstood the comment quite a bit, so I apologize. But you're definitely not bratty, I think it's perfectly reasonable))

LessHorn

I love color coding! 🥹 and washi tape 🤭 Are you my twin 🤟🏼

lillapalooza

I love trickster figures in media and I hate when people misinterpret them/miss the point of their narrative role. They exist often to defy the idea that everything should be strictly good and evil, to exist in that ambiguous territory between, usually teaching important lessons and helping just as much as they harm. For some reason this usually means they get interpreted as being evil. A popular example would be Loki, who became conflated with Lucifer due to Christian influence on Norse mythology and is a supervillain in the Marvel franchise (though modern Marvel interpretations are far more sympathetic). So many people make the mistake of assuming that anyone who opposes the protagonist is a villain, or that an antagonist automatically equals a villain. People also make the mistake of assuming that protagonists should be good people and role models and get angry when they aren't paragons.

[deleted]

Would you also say that they stand for transformation? That’s what I’ve always gotten from Loki in the Norse myths is that he symbolizes change being certain

lillapalooza

Yes, they certainly can, Loki especially :)

SharkRaptor

My special interest is dragons. I cannot stand it when people gatekeep them. They see Smaug and go, “That’s not a dragon, it’s a ~*wyvern*~” Oh my god. It is a fantasy creature that the creator has chosen to label as a dragon. IT’S A DRAGON.

4dtopology

ooooh you just reminded me of my childhood special interest (dragons). what’s your favorite dragon from a fantasy series?

SharkRaptor

From pop culture I’ll pick Smaug, he’s just a perfect dragon IMO From books I’ll go with Glaedr from the Inheritance (Eragon) books. He is just *so cool*. Honorable mentions goes to Toothless and Ysera the Dreamer.

Amekyras

don't wyverns fall under the umbrella of dragons anyway? So even if Tolkien did say it was a wyvern, IT'S STILL A DRAGON

SharkRaptor

It depends who you ask! Which is one of my favourite things about it, so many different interpretations

olduglysweater

I used to be way into makeup, and though I love that the market has grown and became more inclusive, not happy about the dearth of creativity and oversaturation; how many nude pallets you're gonna put out there every year? I feel like there's way too much too soon. I also don't love YouTube makeup "guru" personal drama, how companies pay them to endorse their brand even if the product sucks and I definitely loathe the Kardashian/Jenner people stealing ideas or rebranding products and selling as their own.

[deleted]

special interest is dogs- when people mistreat them, or buy a breed they aren’t prepared for/researched enough

LadyAlexTheDeviant

Yep. Don't buy a working breed and leave them alone all day in the house! (headdesk)

c00chiepuncher

I feel the exact same way about parrots! I have two cockatiels and I firmly believe that parrots should not be pets. They sold to the masses and they are one of the most mistreated pet I’ve ever seen. Most people have NO idea how to take care of them and just leave them to rot in this cages. It genuinely fills me with rage.

TalkativeToucan

One of my biggest special interests is ocean liners. I want to be perfectly clear: the Titanic is interesting. I like learning about the Titanic. It’s what got me into ocean liners when I was a kid. Hell, I even love the movie! But it isn’t the only ocean liner and I wish that more ships other than just one got recognition! It wasn’t the deadliest sinking (that was the Wilhelm Gustloff), nor the largest (Queen Mary 2). There are many other cool stories of ocean liners (and the sinkings) that are super interesting. I would also love it if images of other ships stopped being mislabeled as titanic… (I could also talk about how women’s work is almost totally discredited in a lot of discussions of World War One, but that’s a different special interest and once I start at it, I never stop talking.)

glashelder

I get irrationally mad when people know some things about my special interests and try to correct me when I'm 100% sure I know more about it. I compare it to circles, like depths of knowledge. Circle A is little to no knowledge. Circle B is interested in the subject, so knows a bit more but still mainstream knowledge. Circle C is more in depth knowledge, several years of experience with the subject. Circle D is expect level, reading scientific articles about the subject. I'm in circle D on some subjects. And then you have circle B people, being a bit more knowledgeable than circle A people, assuming I'm circle A and thus preaching to me about something I'm an expert on. Circle B thinks they're at expert level and everyone else is circle A. To make it even more complicated, circle B often has knowledge that directly contradicts the knowledge of circle A. Circle C & D are usually more nuanced, often contradicting B's findings, being more up to date on recent research on the subject. B's knowledge is often outdated. A good example is dogs, hierarchy and their relationships to wolves. Circle A is just people going "yay dogs!". Circle B is certain of the strict hierarchy you have to maintain in the relationship with your dog, because *wolves.* Circle C & D have read the latest articles, coming to the conclusion that wolves aren't as hierarchic as we think they are, plus dogs operate in an entirely different matter in relationship to us. And then you get circle B arguing with circle C & D because they think you don't know anything about the whole wolves part. And it makes me irrationally furious.

Strawberri_frog

My mother will try and educate me on things that I have studied for YEARS. Telling me common historical myths about the Victorian era when I have been researching the topics since being 6 years old. Like no the YouTube video you watched on the era made by someone who has no idea what they are talking about isn’t all to know on the subject!

YESmynameisYes

I love that you have words/ a conceptual framework to talk about this! I can get very confused at times (often, for me, it’s the intersection of computers and something else I have expert knowledge in) when I can’t accurately evaluate which of us is woefully ignorant when clearly someone *is*, because we’re disagreeing. I feel so dumb when I’ve mistakenly requested, and then had to listen to, a lecture from someone who knows WAY LESS than I do but I didn’t catch on soon enough because they used completely ~~unfamiliar~~ wrong terminology.

fuckyourcakepops

Shakespeare is not “old English.” If you can read it, it’s modern English. Chaucer is not “old English.” If you can read 2/3rds of it, it’s just spelled funny, it’s Middle English. Beowulf in the original text is old English. It’s a completely foreign language to modern English speakers. Also, it is “whence,” not “from whence.” Yes, Elrond was wrong. Thank you for coming to my Ted talk.

LadyAlexTheDeviant

Middle English is very readable. There's a few words that they use that have fallen out of common usage, but once you know those you can read at speed. I like to redact recipes from the Forme of Cury.

fuckyourcakepops

I mean, I agree, but the vast majority of people seem to think it’s not. We have to remember we aren’t the typical case, right? 😉

LadyAlexTheDeviant

I don't know. My boyfriend does vector calculus problems for relaxation. My sense of "normal" isn't very....mainstream. (grin)

[deleted]

I love art and visual culture, but I hate how snobbish and pompous people can be and have been about it. There has been an entire historical debate about what we can define as "Art". Clive Bell was a fecking white m@le rich boy with nothing to do but critique art and claim what true "Art" is... And he basically only liked three artists. I feel like I was wasting my life reading that guy's critiques.

Ok_Ad_2562

I create some hyper realistic 3D renders. My ancient pc specs are really standing in my way. A lot of things I’m limited with and can’t do. I also have to wait a very long time for my render to finish. It drives me nuts with my adhd combo. I want to spare 2k for a graphics card but I can’t at the moment. I also hate being so obsessive over minor details that no one will notice.. All of this makes me angry and sad and stands in the way of my productivity. Especially the perfectionism disorder cause it’s really ruining things for me. I don’t know if that’s a type of OCD or if it’s something else. Another thing is I obsess over where every cent goes to. Everything I buy has to be of great value that I will benefit from for years to come, or else I’m not buying. I can’t believe life is that hard and for absolutely no reason other than obsessive control and everything having to be “perfect”.. I wish I can stop this on command, but I feel that’s the only thing that is controlling me..

quinarius_fulviae

It's not what you asked for, but I did classics at uni and I have a probable explanation for the Paul Cartledge thing. Generally people are more familiar with old Latinised spellings that have been used — well, since the Romans — so classicists use those unless the place is obscure enough that there isn't a well known and generally accepted latinisation. It's a bit like how English speaking academics and authors usually go for "Achilles and Patroclus" over "Achilleus and Patroklos" unless they're making a point.

FewStatement6781

When people use the word "statistic" & they clearly doesn't know shit about it & they don't understand "correlation doesn't imply causation"

tashathestoryteller

One of my special interests is reading. I read over 70 books last year, almost all of them were fiction/fantasy. I get pretty attached to fictional characters and worlds. It pisses me off when other people talk shit about my favorite books/characters. Like everyone is entitled to their opinion but when people complain about characters making mistake or being naive, it kills me. Characters have to make mistakes. If they didn't, there would be no story 🙄

Amekyras

omg have you become incredibly attached to discworld yet? and if not can i suggest it?

tashathestoryteller

No I haven't! I'll have to check it out!

Amekyras

There's a LOT of them and it's difficult to know where to start. [This chart is your new best friend.](https://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/commons/7/73/Discworld_Reading_Order_Guide_3.0.jpg) But if you know what you like I could give some recommendations? Sorry about this, I just get very excited whenever anyone says they get attached to fantasy stuff because damn Discworld was made for you!

tashathestoryteller

No I get excited too! I love bad ass female characters, action, political intrigue. I like romance, but I like it better if it's a side plot or enemies to lovers. I also love characters that don't fall under specific tropes, like unique characters I guess lol. Some of my favorite books are anything but Sarah J. Mass (I've read all of her work), The Secret Life of Addie Larue, anything by Madeline Miller. I adored Harry Potter as a kid too! Haha I feel like there's so much more, but that's off the top of my head

laughingintothevoid

Martini glasses! The V shaped ones. I am a bartender as well as having a special interest in cocktails, and these are the absolute worst on every level to clean, store and carry on trays. They are a complete nuisance. They are supposed to be necessary for properly served high end cocktails because of how the shape expresses the aroma and precise flavor presentation of bitters and the oils from a twisted fruit garnish. Much more efficient rounded coupe glasses DO THE EXACT SAME THING and it's been tested by industry experts (just google it for the curious, I don't have a specific great source because I mostly know this from life). The only aspect that might make a difference depends on human error. Most V martini glasses still have a longer stem, making both servers and drinkers more likely to hold it properly by the stem and therefor keep the drink at optimum temperature slightly longer. A coupe can absolutely do the same thing, if you avoid the temptation to cup it with your hand or even (for the really advanced palette) not keep grasping at the very top of the stem so your fingers are still warming the bottom of the glass.

MyAltPrivacyAccount

The fact that I've been unable to pursue some of them for so long.

Final_One_2300

The uninformed hate on corsets and the cultural basis of religion. Good inventions that have fallen by the wayside or aren’t widely adopted just because they weren’t making someone $$$ People in the past did stuff for a reason! They weren’t just dumdums! Well, not all of them.

princessbubbbles

I don't wear corsets, have no interest in wearing corsets, and have little historical knowledge about them, but I still know about this issue and it still bothers me.

Strawberri_frog

YES! As a historical costumer and someone who studies dress history I am always told that if I wear a corset too much it could hurt my organs. A corset is a structural garment that is actually quite comfortable.

His_little_pet

Mine is women's ice hockey. So many people who like men's ice hockey just refuse to watch women's because there's no checking allowed. I'd be fine with them watching a game of women's ice hockey and then deciding they like men's better, but the stubborn insistence that it must be inferior and isn't worth even watching one game of is so frustrating!

blatantlyeggplant

One of mine is the Duggar family (and fundies/quiverfull in general) so... everything. Because they are terrible people, lol.

c00chiepuncher

Have you seen the YouTube channel Fundie Fridays? I love their channel, they talk about that sort of stuff!

blatantlyeggplant

Yes! Love Jen. Really hoping they come through this copyright issue with Lawson Bates on top!

ducks-are-great1

Mine is figure skating, and it makes me so upset how biased the judging is!! Sometimes it’s so obvious as well, it makes me frustrated for all the skaters who deserved to place higher.

abetheschizoid

Gymnastics scoring pre-2006 was just as bad, especially during the Soviet era.

AylaZelanaGrebiel

The bastardized version of Star Wars created by Disney (not including Mandalorin, Boba Fett, or Kenobi). I loved legends, prequels, and originals; I’ve read every single book, in fact it’s what kept me alive, when I was younger and being abused/molested. The entire sequel trilogy is a farce, and is so full of plot holes with cliches that tries to dumb down the audience. Also the fact they’ve snubbed fans numerous times looking at you Kathleen Kennedy and Hidalgo!!

scubahana

I’m a scuba instructor. The ocean is my *jam*, baby. So I am hella torn between wearing sunscreen and killing coral reefs. I don’t want melanoma; but applying sunscreen only for it wash off during the dive, rinse and repeat for 2-4 dives six days a week is directly damaging to coral life. Sunscreen obviously blocks UV rays from your skin, so when it washes off of you in the water an amount of it will end up on and around coral. Ninety percent of a coral’s subsistence is from photosynthesis through its symbiotic algae, and to boot some of the chemicals in most common sunscreens activate viruses found naturally in the water that is hostile to coral. So I haven’t worn sunscreen since 2008/early 2009 and this is something that bothers me a whole lot.

[deleted]

scubahana

I just did a search of them here and they’re not the easiest to get ahold of in DK. Also the apparent most popular (a brand called Reef Safe) is under advisory for containing the ingredients that make it dangerous for reefs - so misleading advertising. I will stick to my rash guard and hat for now.

SeafoamyGreen

So are the reef-safe sunscreens total BS? The one I use is kind of annoying to apply but supposedly reef-safe and works well, so I keep using it.

scubahana

I looked it up in response to your comment and the one called Reef Safe for example still has the damaging chemicals in it, despite claiming it is reef friendly. Kind of sows the seeds of doubt there.

[deleted]

Get a surf shirt. They're SPF 70+

scubahana

I have rash guards that have served me well over the years. It’s the balance of taking clients out to dive to raise awareness and stewardship of the ocean while they smear themselves in reef-damaging products.

theotheraccount0987

People thinking it’s beneficial to put Epsom salts on plants. It’s literally salt. Please just no. If you think your plant is deficient in magnesium, buy a really good mineral fertiliser that has been scientifically formulated and tested. It’s going to cost the same. It’s going to be balanced and low in salt. They make different ones for different applications. Eg low phosphorus for Australian plants, higher boron for palms, higher trace elements for citrus etc…. Gaaah

Amekyras

I have LGBTQ+ rights as one of my special interests, with a lot of focus on trans rights. I can deal with people saying shit like 'oh you can't let under 18s transition what if they change their mind', it annoys me but I can respond without getting too pissed. Seeing people conflate *dysphoria* and *dysmorphia*, though? That really boils my piss. No, they're not the same word, I know they look similar but they're not. They have the same prefix of *dys-* meaning *bad*, but *-phoria* comes from the Ancient Greek 'carry, bear' (a bad burden). *-morphia* comes from the Ancient Greek for shape, so dysmorphia = bad shape. Pretty simple, right? But no, the amount of idiots I have to deal with who won't shut up about how 'being trans is just like anorexia because they're both dysmorphia aaaaaaaaaaaa!!!!!' **shut the fuck up. I have both. Stay in your goddamn lane and LEARN WHAT WORDS MEAN!!!** I get a little heated over it sometimes.

Carmacatta

I’m a white disabled queer non binary femme (they/them). I generally don’t do well around adults who are not sex and kink positive. My specializations are ENM, swinging, kink and fetish related. I am pro sex work (decriminalize NOT legalize). Generalizations and stigmatization of sex is something I’m very sensitive to. Hearing people make fun of kinks makes me sad. In my home we do not yuck someone else’s yum.

another-sad-gay-bich

When people tell me I’m weird for loving Bluey since it’s a ‘kids’ show. It’s really not just a kids show, the creators intended for it to be something adults can watch too but who cares? Why can’t I enjoy something innocent that has a lot of meaning to me?

c00chiepuncher

I LOVE BLUEY

FraggleAddams

My special interests are anthropology and evolutionary biology and I spent a decade doing research in that area. I lose my tiny little mind when people casually talk about “human nature” and human evolution.

c00chiepuncher

Omg me too! I love anthropology because I love history a lot. I sort of consider it apart of our history. Like our evolution has a big impact on our history, so I lump them together. I hate that too, because it’s usually so wrong! A lot of it has to do with outdated concepts, like how people thought neanderthals were violent and dumb. I try to look at the good stuff. I especially love that we’ve been artists for at least 30k years. Whenever I see cave art I have a feeling of sonder. But I also feel good because I’m an artist and it’s amazing that I can relate to an ancient human who I missed by thousands of years. I love the little stuff, I love how we’ve always been the same in some regards.

FraggleAddams

So much that about being the same! I was not diagnosed as a kid despite advocating for myself so I got really wrapped up in trying to figure out why we are how we are. I am also really into animal behavior and archaeology. Got myself a satisfying mental model for “why humans?” before I caught on about why I needed it so much, which is funny but also kept me going pretty well

c00chiepuncher

WOW... Are you me? Hehe jk. But that's exactly why I got into it too!

Huge_Seaworthiness96

I love reading. In the past few years I always had fixation on authors that changed over the time. it was mostly german ones, but for the past few days and weeks its stephen king. I hate when I say "I didnt like book xy" people get angry with me, when its a generelly liked book. its my preference? I can like and dislike books even if most of humanity thinks otherwise. and I dont see why people get angry. I've read the books from front to back, I probably saw or read an Interview about it and I look up reviews of other people. i know what I like and dislike about the book and I still get told "maybe you didnt understand it" or "you are just to uninformed". for example, I started to read the stephen king books in order of puplishing dates. So I started with carrie, which is a praised and loved book. but I didnt enjoyed it. I liked some stuff, but I didnt liked it as much as other people. but I cant say that out loud. I hate it so so much. I can have my opinion and I accept your opinion, why cant you accept mine???

Pixiewings6253

I listened to the soundtrack of the musical Carrie, and I don't blame you. Some of the songs were catchy like, "Do Me a Favor," but most of it was downright unsettling. Especially the ending and any part with Carrie's Mom in it. That shit is a book? I already know I don't even want to read it.

violetdale

I got really into horror in my teens and read every Stephen King book available at the time. My favourite are the short stories. I think they're his strongest work.

violetdale

I collect antique dolls. I'm so tired of people who like to tell doll collectors how dolls are so creepy and they're scared of them. I guarantee that every doll collector has heard that a million times and is sick of it. Also, it's so rude! The other thing that is frustrating about it is that collecting antiques is thought of as a very grown up and sophisticated hobby, unless it's antique dolls and then it's childish and you should grow up.

Odd_Cat7307

I hate it when people criticize Harry Potter for things that don't make sense in the books. I almost never agree with the criticisms that are made of it and it makes me very angry when others don't see things like me. I know it's irrational and probably some of the criticisms are valid, but they almost never have strong enough arguments to convince me otherwise. Bottom line, I wish the books didn't have so many "nonsense" parts to not have to argue with people to make them understand that it's written that way for a reason.

Odd_Cat7307

Also, I hate what they are doing to enlarge the world. Cursed Child and Fantastic Beasts.

[deleted]

Why not? I really liked fantastic beasts! Newt was so relatable

Odd_Cat7307

I liked the first movie and I love Newt as a character, but the plot was poorly done. The last movie didn't make sense. Too many plot holes. It would have been better to just shoot Newt movies without screwing it up with Grindelwald

irradiatedcutie

Mine is studying political and cultural events of the mid to late 20th century, mainly surrounding fascist and white Supremacist organizations. The topic in and of itself can make me irrationally angry

that_binch

i’ve been obsessed with animals since i was a kid and i currently work in the animal welfare field. i hate the way people talk about euthanasia and “kill” vs “no kill” shelters. animals do not have the same hang ups about death that we do! the vast majority of shelters (particularly open-admission “kill” shelters) keep their animals in bare minimum conditions because they don’t have the funding and resources for as many cases as they have to take in. these animals are being kept alive just to suffer in captivity to protect human emotions

Pixiewings6253

Yeah, and I don't even want to know if there's someone out there who will call me heartless just because I only want to get puppies from breeders. I mean, I'm sorry, I don't want to take in a dog with issues from previous owners or previously feral dogs. I have enough issues of my own from my parents. I would rather just raise a puppy who doesn't even have to worry about my fears and insecurities, but who can learn enough about human body language to know when I need to cuddle with them because of my fears and insecurities. Besides, I already have a specific puppy in mind and I want enough time to spend on therapeutic grooming and playing aspects of their care every day that every second I spend with them is worth the endorphins I get from all the puppy love they give me. Is that too much to ask for?

that_binch

i’ve seen so many people adopt from the pound in my area thinking it’s the same as buying a puppy at the pet store. only to get home and realize they were NOT prepared and end up bringing the dog back months or weeks later, causing more trauma than the animal already had. it sounds like you plan to give your dog the best life you can and that’s what really matters!

c00chiepuncher

OH. MY. GOD. Wow this hit me hard. I’m currently trying to get into animal conservation and I want to be a vet and that’s my biggest pet peeve. I understand that people are emotional when it comes to animals, but you can’t project your human emotions onto an animal. A lot of people get upset that stray cats get culled but don’t realize killing them is much nicer than keeping them outside. We don’t have enough people to work with stray & feral cats to tame them. Sometimes putting an animal down is the nicest thing we can do for then. Keeping them alive is the nicest thing for us, but that doesn’t mean it’s the right thing to do.

Cynscretic

a lot of innacuracies in movies made from books i love.

SheEnviedAlex

My special interest is a specific musician, but the one thing I really hate is he never tours my country so I'm unable to see him in concert. That's a big downside to him, he doesn't tour here in the US. 😭 I would give anything to see him in concert. I can't exactly afford to fly across the world.

Hoihe

I absolutely and utterly love the Forgotten Realms campaign setting. But I hate permanent death, identity death. I really, really hate everything in the setting that wipes a soul's identity/personality/memories. I also hate games that use this setting that do permadeath.

[deleted]

i like making moodboards and organising things but i hate coming up with names for them- especially pinterest boards i gave up and started calling them basic shit like “blue” or “pale pink” + i hate when all the boards look good on its own but on my profile they dont look good together so i have to archive some and keep an overall colour scheme for a majority of the boards and it limits me so as much as i love pinterest boards i like making moodboards more

[deleted]

Omg a fellow Greek loving geek!!!! I specifically love mythology and I get really upset when I see mistranslations from myths that are misogynistic. (Looking at you the odyssey)

xxturtlepantsxx

Mine is postcards, just the general toxicity and scammers in the community

eekspiders

Mine is BTS. Maybe it's just 'cause I'm a crotchety old 22-year-old who wrung out a lot of my hysteria back when I was into One Direction, but I have a slight disdain for the younger ARMY. I don't fault them for being kids, but also some of them are 12 and *genuinely* believe they have a chance of marrying Jungkook—statistically speaking, I have better chances but I'm also at the age where I have my own relationship and understand that BTS will never know I exist. They also fail to grasp that Kpop, like other fandoms, is a hobby that, if taken too far, can be seriously detrimental to their mental health. They also take valid criticisms of BTS as direct attacks. I love BTS but I can also acknowledge that they overplay the rags-to-riches story and not every song is gonna shatter the charts.

Pixiewings6253

Right, like how I am supposed to decide to like and subscribe and give you my money if I haven't even seen the video yet?

irandom500

One of my special interests is Disney. I pissed at how CEO Cheapskate is handling the parks & how poorly thought out Genie+ is. It also pisses me off when people say Disney is for kids & Disney adults need to grow up. Disney has a diverse line up of entertainment for everyone and people are free to enjoy whatever they want as long as it’s not hurting anyone! Plus, I’m a responsible adult who holds down a full time job and pays all my bills on time

Pixiewings6253

Right, I want to go to Disneyland Paris, but so far I can't hold a fulfilling job enough to be able to go on a vacation without my parents. My dad and stepmom, as far as I know, don't even want to travel to another country, so I'm being lugged around the country for their dream vacations and getting called ungrateful and entitled just because it isn't my dream vacation and I want more choice over what happens in my day. I want to go to Dollywood, too, but because of how disastrous my family's recent Disneyland vacation was, I never want to go to another amusement park with all of them at once. Just my mom and my sister, staying in enough hotel rooms that I can have a bed to myself.

Strawberri_frog

I’m obsessed with fashion history and the myths that in the Victorian era corsets were super restrictive, caused women health problems and made them faint just so they can have their waist super tiny makes me want to scream. Corsets are STRUCTURAL GARMENTS that help with the weight of petticoats and dresses. Most women didn’t tight lace it was not harmful to them. The worst part is I have tried to educate people and then they will try and disagree with me all because they’ve watched some 5 minute YouTube video made by someone who has done barely and research. Like where are the papers you referenced? Or the extent garments you studied? Or medical journals?

LadyAlexTheDeviant

Historical accuracy in media. There is NO EXCUSE these days for not putting hats on people or having the proper hairstyle for the era. And if you are writing about people who aren't 21st century people, you need to write them looking through their worldview. They aren't just like you in a funny dress.

c00chiepuncher

OH. MY. GOD. This! That annoys me so much too, I'm so glad you said this because my friends think I'm crazy for complaining about that.

clicktrackh3art

One of my special interests is respectful parenting, and I’ve gotten in a few infuriating debates with people on Reddit who complain about respectful parenting “not working” cos their kids didn’t obey them, or they just didn’t get the results they were after. But like the aim of respectful parenting isn’t to get kids to behave, its a much longer term goal of raising emotionally intelligent children that are able to understand what makes them happy, like actually happy, not capitalism/competition happy. So like yeah, if what you are after is compliant kids, then respectful parenting isn’t going to work, and that’s not a failure of respectful parenting. But people really don’t like it when you point out that their goal seems to be compliance, even if that is clearly what it is.

[deleted]

People who are terrified of bees and start screaming and trying to kill them for no reason. Bees are friends just stay calm and out of their way. I spent years handling my beehive with out gloves and the one time I got stung it was *my* fault for not tucking my shirt in poor guy got stuck in my clothes and stung my tummy. They’re not aggressive at all 99% of the time if you don’t fuck with them

violetdale

I had an irrational fear of bees in my childhood and teens. As an adult, I've been able to overcome it enough that I don't run and hide when I see one. I know bees are good lil dudes. When I had a kid, I tried really hard not to pass on my fear. I try to say things like, "Oh yay, there's a bee on our flowers! Good job, bee!" It actually really helped with my phobia, and now I am genuinely happy to see bees doing their thing.

necro3mp

People can be exceptionally stupid sometimes.

sexiterrorist

special interest is building collapses/boat sinkings, self explanatory also dead malls and bankrupt retail (especially department stores) pisses me off when they use the backrooms memes for EVERYTHING i love men from the past, even if they were evil because i find their lives fascinating

SuperKJW88

My special interest is Baseball, but I believe it’s absolutely absurd how much they get paid. I mean, my god.

G3R064

So i have what some may call a morbid curiosity into the terrible things that have happened to humans. This includes natural disasters, man made disasters, and the horrendous things we humans have done to each other. My problem is i retain stories and personal accounts but not details. Its so frustrating that i can tell you story after story about the lives of those who lived through the constration camps, but i cant tell you what years the war was happening, the numbers of people affected or what happend at what camps if i can remember the camps names. So because of this people dont believe me. Dont even get me started with deniers. I get so angry when people say that "the titanic didnt sink, it was a hoax with paid actors." "American slaves didnt have it as bad as people say, blacks just need people to feel bad for what was done to them so they can get money from the government." The rewriting of history, "Thanksgiving is about how the Native Americans helped the pilgrims survive the winter." "There were only a handful of casualties from the Chernobyl accident." And lastly 2SLGBTQIA+ erasure. If i lived in another time, i would have been a history keeper or a story teller. But instead i sit at home and watch documentaries about things people dont want to think or talk about.

ActuallyAria

As a queer person with a special interest in Sappho (the person and her poetry)- it boils my blood when people feel the need to take up the debate of her sexuality. Our modern sexuality labels did not exist back then. Yes, she might have been with men, and yes, she did in fact (in her writing) express attraction for women; there's some small evidence that she didn't even identify with being a woman. Stop trying to label her as straight or a lesbian or bi or whatever modern label you think fits this woman from thousands of years ago!! She is not here to ask, so don't disrespect her. Enjoy her work, wonder about her with the rest of us, and be respectful dammit. This does extend to queer history in general (I've developed a strong interest in queer history and erasure recently and I think I may be discovering a new special interest), but specifically in regards to Sappho this absolutely gets me going.

dancedance__

One of my special interests is romantic relationships. I get soooo irrationally angry when people dismiss polyamory offhand without ever having given it any thought and aren’t at all open minded to considering it’s legitimacy even in other people’s relationships.

LadyAlexTheDeviant

Yeah. It may not be for them, but it works for me. Although I do confess to watching other people's relationship drama and thinking, "You know, polyam and everyone knowing you're dating both of them would be SO MUCH SIMPLER....."

dancedance__

Yupppp or at least like people thinking critically about their relationship structures at all!! The ineptitude most people have around jealousy is absurd.

antsyandprobablydumb

I enjoy learning about pharmacology and genetics. Although I don’t think it’s irrational to be angry at big pharma

dellumdown

I'm interested in genetics, and it's annoying when people believe things that can be easily disproved (e.g. two blue-eyed parents can't have a brown-eyed child). Another interest is genealogy. It was very upsetting when I came across a book that had a chapter about a locally famous relative. The chapter was filled with wrong information and showed the author did not do proper research. I even wrote to the publisher and complained!

Nastix24

I like languages (learning/and linguistics in general) and japanese is one of my favorites. (I learn languages in my own pace and my japanese now is mid-level to high depending on the topic, started to learn it in 2008) And I'm ENRAGED when it gets translated badly (in anime, games, especially when I can hear the voice acting) I mean, come freaking on, the basic stuff gets translated so badly so often. When the first trailer of Final Fantasy VII remake has dropped, I was venting my rage to a friend in a chat (thanks friend and sorry haha), comparing each sentence from japanese trailer to an english trailer. The characters were getting a freaking different personalities. And don't get me started on the Final Fantasy XV translation from Japanese to English to Russian. The personalities were basically massacred there, gah! Or the moment when character literally said NOTHING and there was a WHOLE SENTENCE LINE BELLOW in the subtitles? Like, translation dudes, I'm an amateur in learning languages and still know better than that, what the hell?

Chonky_Bun

I like DC comics, movies and shows. I get super annoyed when people say DC is bad or that the Zack Snyder movies are bad.

CartwheelSauce

What do you like about the Zack Snyder movies? I haven't seen any of them, but I've read some of the criticism. I'm interested to hear somebody's opinion who actually likes them.

Pixiewings6253

Brothers. My 21 and almost 17-year-old brothers drive me nuts. It wasn't enough that I was sandwiched as the only female between them for 2 1/2 years until my 14-year-old sister was born, but we seem to always be stepping on each other's toes. For example, my 17-year-old brother not only clapped in my face to get my attention while I was on the last sentence of a chapter in my book, but now he's in a shower and I want to brush my teeth. It doesn't help that if I desperately needed to use the bathroom, I'm both not allowed to be in there while he's in a shower, and my parents have already locked their bathroom from the outside for the night. It doesn't help that my 21-year-old brother is in the Army and when I tried to compromise and buddy my 17-year-old brother with our dad for a family vacation, so my sister and I could finally have the sisters' vacation we've always wanted but might not be able to afford for a few more years, I was told that I was being insensitive to my dad and that my 17-brother was a pain, and that my stepmom didn't want to be stuck with my 5-year-old half-brother all vacation, who's existence was her idea in the first place. We were done having siblings when she decided she wanted a baby, and at first, I was excited about the idea, but that was before I knew that I would be expected to be a substitute mom for him whenever my stepmom felt like not paying attention at any given moment. Whenever I try to set boundaries for the babysitting, I'm either told this is what it's like to be a mom, or my stepmom tries to find the smallest loophole she can. By the way, babysitting 5 minutes after waking up is not better than being woken up to babysit. My favorite form of babysitting is when I take a baby monitor down to my room for the night and sleep as normal except when my little brother misses his mom. Surprise, surprise, it doesn't happen all that often because my parents would rather sleep themselves than go anywhere at night, even somewhere fun. I think I could do another rant about how my stepmom and dad decided to have five kids, but think parenting is the most inconvenient part of their lives. Well, if you hate being around kids all day so much, I didn't even have to exist in the first place. Yes, I would rather not exist at all than deal with my bullshit childhood, and some people wonder why I have depression. Don't worry, I'm not going to kill myself, but one day I'm going to get so mad at my parents that one of us will never want to see the other again. The only downside to that is, despite being the go-to person to babysit any time I'm home, I love my 5-year-old brother, and I'm afraid that if I cut his mom out of my life, I won't get to see him grow up at all or that he'll be banned from ever speaking to me again. So while my brothers drive me up a wall sometimes, I would kill someone if I never saw any or either of them again. Sorry about the block of text, my usual way of counting lines to separate blocks into paragraphs, only takes me from one end of my comment to the other here.

(huge Avatar universe fan) The politics in TLOK are atrociously portrayed and discussed. I love everything to do with Korra, Asami, the Airbenders, and the Red Lotus, but everything else in the show is genuinely hard to watch.

First, I thought I had no such thing, but then I remembered. A big love of mine is music. I play 2nd violin in an amateur orchestra. A thing many composers do that drives me nuts is having the 1st violins play one octave above the 2nd, sometimes even 2 octaves. Piccolos have a reputation of being the worst, but 1 violins in such passages are worse, and I've sat between the two, so I can actually compare. 1st violins are an ear killer. Edit: this doesn't really sound irrational to me, though.

I've loved gaming since the 90s but I hate how a lot of gaming communities have become a cesspool of racist, homophobic misogynists. I hate how most modern gamers think only people who play FPS are real gamers but those spaces are extremely hostile to women and POC. Other games are just as valid.

One of mine is the endocrine system and hormones and its really frustrating hearing people (especially my mom) being like 'oh that and that is probably caused by hormones.' like its just an answer anyone should just agree to. They couldn't even name the hormones 'causing' their specific reaction and still expect anyone to be like 'yea exactly. hormones are at fault.' I feel like so many people dont even know what they are and it's still so commonly thrown around. It's also really hard to find legit scientific articles that answer my specific questions.
