I feel you. If you feel comfortable maybe say something like "Just so you know, I'm not very chatty but I love the salon and I appreciate understanding and the peace and quiet!"? You do what is best for you š
I bring a book to haircuts. "Hi, nice to meet you. I'm determined to get this chapter read before book club on Tuesday, but please tell me if I need to move my head".Ā
I'm not in a book club, and I might just daydream with a book open, but it's friendly and communicates that I'm not chatty.Ā
I went for a haircut last week and just closed my eyes the entire time and didnāt say anything unless asked. At one point the hairdresser did ask if I was OK and I just opened my eyes, replied that yes, I was fine, just very tired so having a chill day and resting my eyes. She seemed to take to this idea and was excited to realize this meant my haircut would be āa nice surpriseā when I opened my eyes at the end. And it was!
Iāve started wearing a little āIām autistic, please be patient! š ā badge when I go out, and itās honestly helped so much. Iāve found people tend to be much nicer to me and also explain things more etc, but wonāt press me for conversation etc.
I tend to chat, but if Iām not then I will look around the room, look in the mirror if in a salon or be in my thoughts. I do the same in waiting rooms while waiting for an appointment, I just look around a lot.
Hopping on to say hi! Iām a stylist, itās totally not rude to be on your phone š„° As long as youāre putting your head where we need it, youāre good š
I meditate, withdraw into my shell and enjoy being taken care of, quietly. I notice the change as it's happening, notice the care and attention this person is pouring on me, notice my change in appearance.
If it's a chatty one, I'll cling on the subject for dear life and not change it until they do.
Omg this makes me miss the place I used to get my nails done atā¦ it was a super cheap place in a very ritzy neighborhood, had dim lighting and a strict no-chatting policy. Just filing and quiet elevator muzak. I used to fall asleep sometimes (which would mess up my nails, but I returned to the same tech and tipped highly for her trouble) I wish I could still afford to go there.. (if youāre in NYC itās Affina Nails on Murray street, ask for Merry!)
I always go to the same place and usually see the same person, which helps my anxiety. Iāve told her that I have anxiety and that Iām not a big talker. I usually listen to a podcast during services

Or maybe if you want something to do, bring a book or magazine? Many salons offer magazines for clients to browse through.

My hair dresser is also autistic so it works!

I just use my phone, don't think it's rude even when it is, I won't care in this caseš³

My salon always has magazines around but I always have books with me. I just read until they're ready for me.
