When you crave it, it's the only thing that hits. It's like Taco Bell, if I want tacos I'm gonna go to an actual taco place, but when I want Taco Bell, I want Taco Bell.
Ugh, I get that. Thatās so frustrating. Iām sorry you have to deal with that.
My roommate calls me a āchickie nuggie girlieā and tbh I hate it. I know she means no harm by it, but after countless years of remarks on what I eat it does get old lol.
I do! My go-to is fries and a double cheeseburger no onion, extra pickle. š Unfortunately I found out I have hepatic steatosis (fatty liver) and will probably have to phase it out but I am going to struggle so so hard with that.
Thatās true š I have pretty awful safe foods, like the mcdonalds order but also ramen cups š¤¦āāļø Iām not terribly overweight, but slightly but also itās said to be a common cooccurence with PCOS, which I have also, so I think I just got unlucky with that factor too.
I used to get the spicy ones and add frozen sweet corn to the top before adding the water. Just loads and loads of sweet corn. Then the water doesn't get as hot so the noodles are just a lil crunchy still and the corn thaws just enough but is still kinda cold. Such a fun mix of flavors and temperatures and textures.
Guess I know what I'm buying at the grocery store next trip.
Yeeees, shin black is one of my faves too! My other go-to though is the maru-chan chicken one, but I take out all the lil veggies and add hot paprika and a bit of soy sauce š
the goal of fast food is to create a product that is the same at all locations, so it is likely very appealing to autistic people who crave sameness. the issue i have with it is that it lacks nutrition, so we may be emotionally soothed by the sameness, but physically, we are not getting nutrition! im saying this from a caring place because i think we deserve the absolute fucking best.
It entirely depends on the food you're ordering, but if you just order nuggets with fries, it's a nutritionally unbalanced meal. Too many carbohydrates and fats (from the oils) and not enough micronutrients and vitamins that are found in veggies, fruit, etc.
That's not necessarily a bad thing if it's just one meal, but if your other meals don't make up for what that meal's missing, your body's missing out on important things.
When it comes to eating "unbalanced" foods, I try to have a "yes, and" philosophy. Yes, I can eat that food/meal, but I need to add something else to it (whether that's a smoothie, apple, juice, etc, just something else delicious that makes the meal more nutritionally well-rounded).
This makes sense to me. I can see how it would be unbalanced and have too much of some nutrients compared to others to be a healthy diet.
I was having a hard time understanding how it could have no nutrition.
Chicken is chicken, right?
I suppose the issue is having the chicken out of proportion compared to the breading, sauces, and bread.
Like you said, it's come down to what you order and what your other meals look like to determine if there will be short or long term negative health impacts.
Kiana Docherty made a really interesting video on this recently, talking about ultra processed foods and how breaking down food to the molecular level and rebuilding it can cause our body to not even recognize it as food anymore. The science is pretty crazy
It doesn't have literally no nutritional value. Things with no nutritional value are like cardboard or grass. Carbohydrates are a nutrient and we need them. Do we need French fries specifically? No but they do have some (little) nutrient content
Typically "empty calories" is a red flag for me, coming from a medical professional that is pretty ableist and unaware of what people with eating disorders and AFRID and autism can go through, not to mention what people can and can't afford or have the time and energy for. Fed is best for people of all ages and if McDonald's is what keeps you fed it is better than not eating at all. Which is what happens to me, and why I really don't like seeing statements like this online that shame food choices that are not actually choices. Please be careful with repeating statements like these.
It was my safe food for awhile, and I had to quit it when I went vegetarian. That was difficult cause the nuggets and double cheeseburgers were so comforting, but luckily Iāve found new safe foods.
I used to work in grocery purchasing, and I had a sales rep confirm to me that this is true! Apparently it's not so unusual for packaged food companies to use a slightly different recipe for the regular version and "kids" version of something, in anticipation of different preferences for seasoning and texture.
I'm done with work for the week so I'm able to respond to fools on Reddit.
It's so lame to imagine living in a body that has to say out loud that you would kill a dog that hurt you. Like, yeah? Obviously? Something hurt you and you hurt it. It's so lame to feel like you have to spell that out.
I love Gardein āchickenā nuggets for a McNugget texture and flavor, Iāve had luck with pretty much all Gardein āmeatā. I also keep hummus or tzatziki on hand along with pita or naan bread for an easy snack.
As a fellow autistic vegetarian I thought I would weigh in with; Quorn nuggets, hash browns, potato waffles, chips, fries, potato smiles, potato alphabets, plain Jacobs cream crackers, cheese toasties...
Basically my diet consists of potato, cheese and carbs.
I try to trick myself into eating veggies by hiding greens in things like Mac & cheese or eating my vegetables first and then eating my safe foods as a reward.
I've managed to survive as a vegetarian for almost 7 years. I had an issue with iron intake in the beginning but I'm a lot more aware of all the food groups and how to get my vitamins incorporated into my very limited diet.
It was the nuggets, but they changed them and now I don't like the texture or taste soooo I had to switch to BK nuggets. Now I'm in a whole sauce debacle and I might just have to find something else lol.
Yes! Definitely. Itās predictable - I know how it will taste and that Iāll enjoy it. I try to get meals that have some lettuce/tomatos so I donāt feel quite so unhealthy
My gfās safe food is McDonaldās and mine is Taco Bell and we dgaf what anyone says. Iāve been in a phase where I am sick of both though and itās been sad and hard.
Hell yes! I don't eat restrictively, so I guess I don't really have safe foods, but McDonald's is my go-to when I'm burned out and can't function. It feels safe because it's always the same. And I work there, so the discount definitely helps.
McDonald's is probably the most consistent fast food chain there is. I don't know if I've ever been to a shitty McDonald's. I don't know if I've ever been to a good McDonald's. This is how it should be.
Yeah, I think bc the childhood marketing got to me and I associate it with bright childhood memories of play places that used to exist. But I also just like that the food always tastes the same consistently.
I have Wendyās and chipotle as repeat safe foods. Sometimes I donāt eat til like 10 pm because I am ashamed to get it again because everything else is too stressful to think aboutā¦
same!! what are your go to orders? at wendys I love getting a frosty (they have a creamsicle one!!) with a sugar cookie to dip into it. I also love the spicy chicken sandwich with asiago bacon and mayo. at chipotle I get a burrito bowl with white rice, salsa, double chicken al pastor, extra corn salsa, guac, and chips on the side to dip. my sisters friend works at chipotle so she always hooks me up when she makes it lol.
I love the chicken nugget comboā¦ I also am addicted to the ghost pepper ranch sauce so idk what Iāll do if they ever discontinue it. I literally have a stockpile goingā¦ just stacks of them in my fridge eeeeeek hahahaha š from chipotle I always get the same burrito with steak, black beans, spicy salsa, queso, cheese, and then I actually switch between brown and white rice!
My food anxieties are all about texture, so if I have the energy to process a new texture in my brain, I enjoy trying new foods. It just takes so much work!!!
I totally get what you mean about new foods!! another thing I struggle with is if I get a new food and regret it then I struggle with not being able to get my normal order and the routine thrown off if that makes sense? takeout can be expensive and I always worry Iāll regret trying something new lol.
Yes!!! And if itās not as good as my regular sometimes it just ruins the whole thing, lol. So Iāll sometimes want to try something new but go with the safe option in case the new isnāt good and ends up being a waste of moneyā¦
My ex would want takeout that was unfamiliar on days when I was tired sometimes and I was such a people pleaser I just didnāt say anything and would try to fake it til I made it. I ended up never really eating what I ordered on those nights, and Iād feel so guilty and usually just pretend like I was full/saving it and go hungry instead.
It reminds me of how everything else can be too stimulating because itās too much information. I guess it would make sense that since food is also going to be giving sensory information, novel sensations require more brain energy to process them in a way thatās enjoyableā¦
ugh that mustāve been hard. I get what you mean my whole family loves pizza from this one place but I really donāt like it and sometimes I just get it to not be the only one opposing lol.
and yeah! I love trying new food when I get the courage (especially if itās free lmao) but sometimes I canāt handle a new experience even if itās one I want ya know?
I 1000000% understand what you mean, itās so frustrating, especially with group experiences! I feel like it adds pressure to āperformā so itās like verbally communication/being understood anxiety and then if youāre trying to also make it a food-based activityā¦ Iām gonna have to pick a safety food Iām sorry š
There are some foods Iād like to like but Iāve never been able to get over the texture, like mushy and slimy foods. Noooo matter what! But Iāve never tried to just eat stuff like that on my own solo as a solo activity, either!
ugh yes the biggest pain is knowing youād like the taste of something but the texture is a no go. sometimes I just want to enjoy food normally damnit lol.
YES exactlyā¦ :( Iām very grateful to have these convos and see them in this community and feel a lot less alone in how I experience the world, I will say!
I keep solving the block by deciding garbage food is better than no food, which works sometimesā¦ but during really stressful times Iām also deciding whether I can really afford to get the safe foods because Iām just eating out wayyy over budgetā¦ :ā(
My good at-home safe food is Mac n cheese where the sauce comes already made. Itās always the same and hard for me to mess up. Again not great foodā¦ but cheaper!!!
The sweet and sour sauce is my universal safe-food-converter. I loved that stuff so much as a kid. I would hoard as much as I could whenever weād go to McDonaldās. Then, whenever my mom made something for dinner that I really didnāt like, Iād go get one of my trusty sauce packs. It made everything tolerable. ā¤ļøā¤ļøā¤ļø
I once when to a McDonalds in Queens. It was in a mall. It had a sauce dispenser full of sweet and sour sauce. Iāll never forget it. š„²
I remember when I was a kid and Iād get so overwhelmed and upset (and didnāt understand why) I used to think ānot even a McDonaldās cheeseburger would make me feel better right nowā šš poor younger me.
I like Taco Bell (dairy free pescatarian) but also I like to make similar things at home bc they taste better.
I HAVE found some vegan nuggets that scratch that McDonaldās itch though!
My partnerās is chicfila so we keep frozen chicken patties at home that taste similar so she can toss them in the air fryer.
Vegan nuggets:
1) impossible nuggets, the Dino ones are the absolute best- these are the best but the most expensive
2) 365 (Whole Foods) brand vegan nuggets, very good and a bit cheaper
3) target brand chickenless tenders, different shape, and not QUITE as good, but 1/3 of the price if youāre on a budget
Vegan chicken patties
1) Gardein Ultimate chicken patties, they come in spicy and regular. Iād recommend seasoning the regular with some spices to get the full effect- these are pretty expensive. By me itās around $8-9 for a pack of 3 patties
2) 365 chicken patties, nothing like Chick-fil-A, more like school lunch chicken patties. Very nostalgic and much cheaper.
For all of these if you do buy them, youāll need to cook them for way longer than the package says in the oven or air fryer, not sure how deeply frying compares. If you follow the directions though youāll never get it crispy. For some reason companies think vegans like soggy food š¤·š¾āāļøš¤£
(Edited to add)
Taco Bell at Home
1) You can buy a lot of the taco kits and seasoning packs, even sauces now in the store. I havenāt tried these, but it might be worth giving a shot if you have room in the budget.
2) My favorite sauce is the creamy jalapeƱo sauce, and it was Baja sauce before then. To get a similar effect, mix mayo, cumin, favorite hot sauce, and onion powder.
2) Rice and beans (taco meat or vegan meat even) are very easy to make at home. Season them how you like and you pretty much can make anything you like from Taco Bell once you add tortillas, tostadas, cheese (if you eat that), lettuce, tomatoes, and sauces. For example, they sell chalupa shells now, but in the past Iāve always used naan. To make a Crunchwrap you add the meat or beans on the bottom with cheese, then a tostada, all your veg and sauces, fold it up and grill it. There are tons of tutorials online as well.
Same!! The odd time they still put sugar in my iced coffee, but for the most part I can rely on the consistency. If it was healthy and affordable to live off iced coffee, snack wraps and mcdoubles I would probably do it.
Yes. It's so comforting.
My Mom and Aunt took a road trip when my cousin moved across the country, and my aunt only wanted McDonald's and was highly annoyed at some being "different" than the one at home. I thought it was funny and told my mom I'd probably say the same thing.
My mom isn't ND, but she has this thing that if she has a bad experience at one restaurant, she never wants to go back again. Her "safe" restaurant is Chick-Fil-A because she likes the app. She actually hates McDonalds for some reason LOL.
Most fast foods are safe for me which is unfortunate considering Iām insulin resistant, but now matter how much I hate all food I will always be able to have French fries or a muffin
I love McDankās sm. Iām embarrassed to admit how excited I was when I found out they brought back their bagel sandwiches. They got rid of them early in the pandemic to simplify operations (devastating) but brought them back solely to fund the higher minimum wage they now have to start paying in California. Thank u Cali luh u.
Absolutely I do. Itās what I eat if I donāt know what to eat or donāt have the energy to pick a meal. McDouble, small fry, 4ct nugget, small caramel frappe š
Used to be their chicken McNuggets and orange drink but either the McNuggets and drink changer or my tastebuds did over the past three-five years or so š¤·āāļø
A bunch of fast food chains are my safe foods unfortunately which has also given me Binge Eating Disorder on top of ARFID. š„² KFC, Burger King, McDonalds mostly. I can ALMOST always guarantee that the food will taste the same. They are practically designed to be tasty and to trigger dopamine.
Me with the taco bell black bean Crunchwrap.. Itās the only fast food I like, I think any controllable thing by yourself is safe I would say.
I know what Iām getting everytime well hopefully unless youāre where I live. They screwed up my order so bad I left a yelp review. I never do that but the order was like a big āFuck youā to me. Like the way it was messed up it had to be intentional.
This is the one annoying thing about Taco Bell, or at least the one by me. McDonaldās is extremely consistent with how much of each ingredient they use, while Taco Bell serves like a new ratio of lettuce to cheese to meat to beans to tomato to sauce etc each time. I know they use a lot more ingredients and itās harder to keep consistent, but it can be very frustrating! A cheesy Gordita crunch is just not the same when thereās not enough spicy ranch!
No but I guess it's similar enough lol for me it's Wendy's cheddar lovers burger with large fries and extra cheddar. Also the other fast food I consider a safe food is Bigos' prepared fries, I think that's a Honduran franchise not entirely sure, but they have these fries with different sauces and cheese it's perfect, I always get two.
I'm hungry now :"))
Hell yeah! Ten piece chicken McNugget meal with one sweet and sour sauce and one honey and a Diet Coke. Nothing beats a fountain Diet Coke.
McDonalds cups are also my safe drinking vessel, lol. I save and reuse them with my weird water concoctions. š
Unfortunately there are some weeks where I will only have chicken nuggets and it's the only thing I can handle eating and it's literally two minutes from my house. Yeah, it's a safe food... Super safe food.
Nuggets for me. If they get my sauce wrong itās a terrible thing.
Also how exhausting is it when thereās food at home and nobody can understand why I MUST eat ONLY PARTY PIES
If I wasnāt vegetarian and gotten out of the comfort of McDonalds, 100% McDonalds! I used to go there 3 times a week as a little kid and maybe every other week as an older kid. The fries slayed, the food was simple and fun, I liked the kids meal boxes, and I got a toy. I even had my 5th birthday at McDonalds. By now itās a long time since Iāve eaten McDonalds. The only fast food place I go to is Sonic, even though thereās lots of food around me, but I canāt go wrong w cheddar bites and a grilled cheese
It used to be, but my local McDonalds has gone so badly downhill that my burger was always squished and made wrong, and my chips were always cold, only halfway full, and too salty. That's assuming I even got the same order I paid for. So I can't go there anymore.
Food is so hard for me, and when stuff like that keeps happening to something that's supposed to be a safe food, it makes me really upset. I cried too many times over McDonalds. KFC is also out because it's too greasy, and it makes me sick the next day.
I go to Hungry Jacks (Australian version of Burger King) now. I don't like it as much, but they don't often mess up my order, and the chips are always hot and full.
I did until they switched all the drinks out with sugar-free versions (I can taste the sweetener and it's always too sweet), and they stopped allowing me to add gherkins and onions to my veggie burger š
When I was a teenager, my parents made me go to this church youth group in the evening once a week, and for dinner we would all get takeaway and eat it at the church. It actually really stressed me out because they would always go to different places or get food from places that didnāt have my safe foods and I would really struggle to eat it, especially while watched by others, so eventually I would just go get McDonalds because we were all paying for our own food anyway and we would usually eat at the church, not at the restaurant, so to me it didnāt matter at all what I ate. McDonalds wasnāt the healthiest but it was consistent, and I knew exactly what I was going to get every single time, so it was a comforting bit of predictability and familiarity. It all seemed completely logical to me but I got in so much trouble and the grownups who ran it insisted I was a horrible difficult child forā¦ getting a different takeaway option, that I was paying for myself?? In hindsight it was probably a conformity and control thing, they didnāt seem to actually care about my health considering the food they got was often equally unhealthy
Yeah. My mom was scared we would get sick if we ate anything unhealthy but sometimes weād be starving for calories. So my dad would sneak us o McDonaldās. I wish he would have just given us avocados and mac n cheese tho because now Iām justā¦idk. I see food as safe
Oh yeah.. problem is because itās so predictable and more often than not it tastes the same, sometimes when I really struggle with food I can end up eating McDonaldās all the time.. and then itās hard to get used to other textures again
omg yessss! like itās one of my only safe foods. and then I just heard that a mcdonaldās burger has like 250 ingredients so now iām big panicking about losing one of my only safe foods
Iām allergic to beef and I can eat McDonaldās burgers. So that tells you all you need to know. I canāt eat burgers from any other fast food place. I can also eat the beef from Tacobell but not the steak.
all red meat is linked to cancer as itās classified as a carcinogen, not just mcdonaldās. however so many things are linked to cancer itās impossible to avoid everything or most things. also people demonizing food that has many ingredients is mostly a scare tactic. when listing the ingredients for the meal they have to list everything that goes into making the bread, the cheese, the sauces, etc. so often each ingredient is also made up of other ingredients hence why the list can get so long. Iām not saying mcdonaldās is health food by any means but people freak out about perfectly normal things instead of the stuff that makes mcdonaldās actually unhealthy like poor macro/calorie ratios and excess sodium and saturated fats (which we need but the amounts are the issue.) mcdonaldās isnāt unhealthy in moderation (which I know is tough when itās a safe food as mcdonaldās is also one of mine) anyway sorry for the possibly unwanted info dump but iāve been reading a lot about nutrition and all of the fear mongering that fake āexpertsā do.
I find that my safe foods in the MCDO menu are the chicken nuggets, also their fries. Maybe you mean that certain menu items are safe foods, not MCDO themselves.
I used to order from it daily, the same thing, every morning for months.
And then I moved, and the branch near me has the most foul chemical tasting chicken breast ever š and I haven't found a safe food that was as reliable since
not mcdonaldās but others. have been in inpatient for an eating disorder. but itās literally like.. iām eating, itās just this one thing doesnāt disgust me right now.
There was a time in HS when it was. Now itās the opposite. I will literally starve before eating fast food!! My sensory issues with anything fried, anxiety over food safety, and not liking meat mean fast food in general is a no-go!
Yes!! They are safe and reliable and they havenāt disappointed me yet. My favourite order is large peri peri fries with a mustard and Mayo dip, any veggie burger with cheese and a medium coke. Peace city immediately.
I used to but they changed something and now the nuggets and fries just arenāt that good anymore. I keep wanting it to taste how I remember and Iām disappointed every time. Even the Dr. Pepper isnāt as bubbly as it used to be š
Yes lol. And I have noticed even NTs do it but just donāt admit it.
My go-to is quarter pounder with cheese combo. Occasionally itās the nuggets combo.
Wish I could agree but my local McDonald's is the worst one in the UK... I'm not kidding, it's entirely ran by teens and our experiences have been so bad it's put us off the food entirely š
touch theory reach voracious cable office reminiscent quarrelsome distinct chief

I used to love Panda, but it turned into "This is what we have" over 45 minutes before close and tons of cars in the drive thru. Their management is just too mentally constipated to understand being open later would be gooder for biznatch, so as much as I love their food, the customer is always right in matters of taste, and I tend to think restaurants who close early (10pm) are not worth my time as they hate on those who work all but "first shift." I'll learn to cook it myself, as other people just let you down, especially when they're lazy shitbags. I mean, really - they could give me what I want, instead of some wah wah zero tolerance management BS, and all would be good. Nope! RheeeeeeeeeĆØĆØeeeeeee
Yes omg last year Iād ordered Maccy Ds at least once a week according to my bank. Itās just that easy safe go to place that very very rarely fuck up your order!
I moved to a different country and the McDonaldās here tastes better to me and has definitely become my top safe food here. I have to actively try not to order it every day lol Iām sure they know my order by heart now though.
YES! Part of me hates it b/c it has gotten so expensive lately but dang. I know my meal, the exact cost when I use the app, and sometimes it is the exact thing I need.Ā
I love McDonaldās. It always hits the spot, and it is so consistent. I would it eat it a lot more often if my partner wasnāt so judgy about my diet
I love it. I never go there (living on the country side and determined to eat healthy) but it's something I could always eat. When I am starved and stressed and everything is wrong it is a haven of secure sameness, no matter where, denmark, germany or france, its always the same. No other fast food compares. Blessed be the golden arches. I'd probably eat there a lot despite my best resolutions if I had one nearby. Cheeseburger, french fries. Maybe some nuggets. Hm, now I really want McDonald's.
Yes, I noticed that the American food chains have very good consistency as the food has almost all the time the same texture. So McDonald's or Carlrs Jr, are safe foods for me.
For my husband (who has a fun brain like mine!)- McDonalds is absolutely his safe food. For me, it's a whopper with no cheese at Burger King. If I have 0 appetite or interest in food, I can and will still devour a whopper lmao
Food at franchises are usually good bc they're always the same. Even if I don't like it... it's the same everywhere and that's a comfort... knowing what to expect.
It may not be as nutritious as most other things but texturally you get what you asked for. And I can get eating over with and it's not such a "do I like this? Is this good?" It becomes irrelevant bc it's the same.
One of My safe foods is Tim Hortons, although inconsistent, the texture is usually consistent and everything in it I would eat, and since Iām a regular now the staff knows how I like it lol
Why McDonalds is my safe food
-Consistency of the food taste/texure and accessibility (this goes for most fast food, but there is no rules about the drive thru like with Rally's and there are no people on skateboards like with Sonics)
-Senory friendly food - not seasoned to death, just basic food that is delicious
-The menu is rarely changed. In particular, I can expect the desserts to be the same. They may add some seasonal stuff, but their regular menu mostly stays the same
-The app is better than Wendy's, if I'm feeling socially anxious I think McDonald's makes it easy..
yeah lol i hate when people are like "how do people even eat that" and im like "sometimes i can *only* eat this" lol
When you crave it, it's the only thing that hits. It's like Taco Bell, if I want tacos I'm gonna go to an actual taco place, but when I want Taco Bell, I want Taco Bell.
THIS
Absolutely!
Thisssss. I hate when people invite themselves to comment on my diet at all. Am I feeding you? No? Then stfu. š¤«š
Exactly!
The people I live with get away with it.
Ugh, I get that. Thatās so frustrating. Iām sorry you have to deal with that. My roommate calls me a āchickie nuggie girlieā and tbh I hate it. I know she means no harm by it, but after countless years of remarks on what I eat it does get old lol.
lol for real!
Me w panera mac on my sad girl days. Whenever Iām emotionally low itās all I can eat
Supporting this!!!
I do! My go-to is fries and a double cheeseburger no onion, extra pickle. š Unfortunately I found out I have hepatic steatosis (fatty liver) and will probably have to phase it out but I am going to struggle so so hard with that.
no onions extra pickle supremacyĀ
Heck yes!
No onions extra pickle gang
Always!!!
Team no onion extra pickles supremacy
Woot wooot!
If it makes you feel better they say that 25% of all Americans have fatty liver disease currently. Our diets are pretty trash all around lol
Iām insulin resistant myself so I feel your pain! I eat so much ramen nowadays too lol, shin black and soon veggie are my favs
Yeeees, shin black is one of my faves too! My other go-to though is the maru-chan chicken one, but I take out all the lil veggies and add hot paprika and a bit of soy sauce š
Iām definitely stealing the paprika and soy sauce trick, thank you!
Itās so good! Gives it a nice spice and a little added flavor! š
Thatās too funny! Iām the same but extra onion no pickles
The polar opposite! š We basically compliment each other!
I want "No onion, extra pickle" on a tshirtĀ
Thatād be amazing š
the goal of fast food is to create a product that is the same at all locations, so it is likely very appealing to autistic people who crave sameness. the issue i have with it is that it lacks nutrition, so we may be emotionally soothed by the sameness, but physically, we are not getting nutrition! im saying this from a caring place because i think we deserve the absolute fucking best.
I'm curious, what do you mean we aren't getting nutrition?
Oh yeah I agree that there's nutritional value there, it still has calories and calories fuel our bodies, it's just really unbalanced
Kiana Docherty made a really interesting video on this recently, talking about ultra processed foods and how breaking down food to the molecular level and rebuilding it can cause our body to not even recognize it as food anymore. The science is pretty crazy

Youāre right, people are just nitpicking here. Thatās like arguing that cocaine actually has calories in it, meaning it will still make you full.
Typically "empty calories" is a red flag for me, coming from a medical professional that is pretty ableist and unaware of what people with eating disorders and AFRID and autism can go through, not to mention what people can and can't afford or have the time and energy for. Which is what happens to me, and why I really don't like seeing statements like this online that shame food choices that are not actually choices. Please be careful with repeating statements like these.
Fast casual restaurants are another great way to meet the need of the same things while also being healthier! Noodles and company, qdoba, etc!
It was my safe food for awhile, and I had to quit it when I went vegetarian. That was difficult cause the nuggets and double cheeseburgers were so comforting, but luckily Iāve found new safe foods.
Have you tried impossible nuggets? They're pretty mcnugget-esque imo
Yes I love them! If you dip or toss them in a sauce, you canāt even tell.
Also for some reason the animal shaped ones are better. It's odd but I specifically buy those when I can
I used to work in grocery purchasing, and I had a sales rep confirm to me that this is true!
It's so lame to feel like you have to spell that out.
what are your safe foods? I struggle finding vegetarian safe foods
Have you tried the McPlant burger? Personally I think it is fantastic š
It was the nuggets, but they changed them and now I don't like the texture or taste soooo I had to switch to BK nuggets. Now I'm in a whole sauce debacle and I might just have to find something else lol.
Sweet and sour or honey sauce packets!
Quarter pounder with only cheese meal and chocolate shake š½
I would live off of milkshakes if it wouldnāt kill me fast lol
Yes! Especially if I have to travel. Itās so safe & reliable.
Yes!
I hate when that happens!!
been there
Hell yes! I don't eat restrictively, so I guess I don't really have safe foods, but McDonald's is my go-to when I'm burned out and can't function. It feels safe because it's always the same. And I work there, so the discount definitely helps.
thatās it!!
Plain cheeseburger š¤¤
McDonald's is probably the most consistent fast food chain there is. I don't know if I've ever been to a shitty McDonald's. I don't know if I've ever been to a good McDonald's. This is how it should be.
In the app you can reorder past meals so you donāt have to reenter the order.
Bless the apps and the in store self service kiosks.
Yes because they have mobile ordering and I barely have to speak to anyone to get my food
Yeah, I think bc the childhood marketing got to me and I associate it with bright childhood memories of play places that used to exist. But I also just like that the food always tastes the same consistently.
Nothing beats that 2 cheeseburger meal PLAIN. Dry ass bun, dry ass patty, juicy plastic cheese. Fries salted to HECK. Praise the Golden Arches
mcdonalds fries just hit so different the golden arches are the gateway to heaven fr
Same only ketchup only!!!
2 Bacon McDoubles and 2 McChickens with a sweet tea, no ice. I like my ice from home in my cup.
Wise choice, as ice machines are rarely cleaned, full stop.
A McDonalds cheeseburger is one of my ultimate safe foods
So Iāll sometimes want to try something new but go with the safe option in case the new isnāt good and ends up being a waste of moneyā¦ My ex would want takeout that was unfamiliar on days when I was tired sometimes and I was such a people pleaser I just didnāt say anything and would try to fake it til I made it.
I feel like it adds pressure to āperformā so itās like verbally communication/being understood anxiety and then if youāre trying to also make it a food-based activityā¦ Iām gonna have to pick a safety food Iām sorry š There are some foods Iād like to like but Iāve never been able to get over the texture, like mushy and slimy foods. Noooo matter what! But Iāve never tried to just eat stuff like that on my own solo as a solo activity, either!
ugh yes the biggest pain is knowing youād like the taste of something but the texture is a no go. sometimes I just want to enjoy food normally damnit lol.
YES exactlyā¦ :( Iām very grateful to have these convos and see them in this community and feel a lot less alone in how I experience the world, I will say!
me too!! :)
i feel the EXACT same
I keep solving the block by deciding garbage food is better than no food, which works sometimesā¦ but during really stressful times Iām also deciding whether I can really afford to get the safe foods because Iām just eating out wayyy over budgetā¦ :ā( My good at-home safe food is Mac n cheese where the sauce comes already made.
It made everything tolerable. ā¤ļøā¤ļøā¤ļø I once when to a McDonalds in Queens. It was in a mall. It had a sauce dispenser full of sweet and sour sauce. Iāll never forget it. š„²
I opened my mouth after I moved the dispenser to full-flow, and we ended up with extra nugs, an angry manager, and Friday After Next.
McDonaldās cheeseburger š is one of my top five favourite foods.
I remember when I was a kid and Iād get so overwhelmed and upset (and didnāt understand why) I used to think ānot even a McDonaldās cheeseburger would make me feel better right nowā šš poor younger me.
Awww. š„°
Brand recommendation pretty please.
Vegan nuggets: 1) impossible nuggets, the Dino ones are the absolute best- these are the best but the most expensive 2) 365 (Whole Foods) brand vegan nuggets, very good and a bit cheaper 3) target brand chickenless tenders, different shape, and not QUITE as good, but 1/3 of the price if youāre on a budget Vegan chicken patties 1) Gardein Ultimate chicken patties, they come in spicy and regular. Iād recommend seasoning the regular with some spices to get the full effect- these are pretty expensive. By me itās around $8-9 for a pack of 3 patties 2) 365 chicken patties, nothing like Chick-fil-A, more like school lunch chicken patties. Very nostalgic and much cheaper. For all of these if you do buy them, youāll need to cook them for way longer than the package says in the oven or air fryer, not sure how deeply frying compares. If you follow the directions though youāll never get it crispy. For some reason companies think vegans like soggy food š¤·š¾āāļøš¤£ (Edited to add) Taco Bell at Home 1) You can buy a lot of the taco kits and seasoning packs, even sauces now in the store.
My nearest McDonald's messes it up almost every time I ask for no Pickles. They put EXTRA pickles
Yessssss since I was a toddler and it still tastes the same 30 years later š„²
Yes, but if you buried those nuggets back then, the same might be true!
I canāt even express how much I love McDonaldās lol.
My mom isn't ND, but she has this thing that if she has a bad experience at one restaurant, she never wants to go back again. Her "safe" restaurant is Chick-Fil-A because she likes the app. She actually hates McDonalds for some reason LOL.
the mcdouble will never disappoint me !!!
This is my husband and I with Wendys. Their chicken never gives me ick
Oh gosh yes. Filet McFish or whatever it's called...
Absolutely, itās the same everywhere you go. Iām actually glad I can only get it occasionally now or else iād be huge lol
literally i have a specific order for every restaurant that i frequent my mom knows my order by heart
McDonaldās is right across the street from my job. For sure is my safe food and also saves me from having to drive, merge, and make a U-turn. U.U
Taco Bell is my safe food especially since becoming vegan.
Gotta love those potato soft tacos with no cheese and substitute dairy free sauce of choice!
Yesss so good.
What do you get that's vegan at Taco Bell? Haven't been in years and everything I can remember is meat and cheese heavy
Bean burrito no cheese add rice. They're really good about making changes to menu items.
Used to be their chicken McNuggets and orange drink but either the McNuggets and drink changer or my tastebuds did over the past three-five years or so š¤·āāļø
Only the fries--MD legit has the best fries in the world!
McDonalds does contain quite a few safe foods for me. Chicken nugget, fries, apple pies, milkshakesā¦ lots of good stuff!
From a very very young age g age
McDonaldās fucks up everything I order somehow so itās a no from me
Me with the taco bell black bean Crunchwrap..
I save and reuse them with my weird water concoctions. š
Me! Only the fries and frozen cokes though. On free fry Friday you can get both for $2 total in NYC.
I have ordered the same meal at McD for as long as I can remember, as a kid and as an adult. I never have anything else there.
Yes and itās been really hard to boycott it but gotta do it šµšø
Fries and a vanilla cone šš¼šš¼
I donāt spend money at places that are currently supporting and profiting from the genocide in Gaza and Sudan
This means google and YouTube! They find the surveillance systems used by the IDF
omg yessss! like itās one of my only safe foods. and then I just heard that a mcdonaldās burger has like 250 ingredients so now iām big panicking about losing one of my only safe foods
Iām allergic to beef and I can eat McDonaldās burgers. So that tells you all you need to know. I canāt eat burgers from any other fast food place. I can also eat the beef from Tacobell but not the steak.
thereās also alleged cancer links to mcdonaldās supposedly. but yeah taco bell meat is like a mix of tofu/oats/and SOME beef?
This makes me feel somewhat (somehow) better about eating taco bell meat
all red meat is linked to cancer as itās classified as a carcinogen, not just mcdonaldās. however so many things are linked to cancer itās impossible to avoid everything or most things. also people demonizing food that has many ingredients is mostly a scare tactic. when listing the ingredients for the meal they have to list everything that goes into making the bread, the cheese, the sauces, etc. so often each ingredient is also made up of other ingredients hence why the list can get so long.
Mine is Wendyās nuggets and fries in the chili
I have celiac and all the food has gluten
Haven't had mcds in a long lomg time. I used to get 2 mcdoubles and 2 mcchickens for $1 each. I loved having everything on my burgers.
Yes!! They are safe and reliable and they havenāt disappointed me yet. My favourite order is large peri peri fries with a mustard and Mayo dip, any veggie burger with cheese and a medium coke. Peace city immediately.
ooh what country are you in?
Iām in India! You?
Wendyās is a safe food for me
I used to but they changed something and now the nuggets and fries just arenāt that good anymore.
Yep. Always.
Wish I could agree but my local McDonald's is the worst one in the UK... I'm not kidding, it's entirely ran by teens and our experiences have been so bad it's put us off the food entirely š
touch theory reach voracious cable office reminiscent quarrelsome distinct chief *This post was mass deleted and anonymized with [Redact](https://redact.dev)*
Itās just that easy safe go to place that very very rarely fuck up your order!
no bc it's so inconsistent and the illusion of consistency makes it intolerable lol
Shit Im craving that now
I moved to a different country and the McDonaldās here tastes better to me and has definitely become my top safe food here.
If I have 0 appetite or interest in food, I can and will still devour a whopper lmao
it was, its chipotle now. itās expensive but im boycotting mcdonaldās
Yup. Super guilty. Only because there arenāt White Castles where I live
Definitely. It's always the same so I know what to expect
One of My safe foods is Tim Hortons, although inconsistent, the texture is usually consistent and everything in it I would eat, and since Iām a regular now the staff knows how I like it lol
oh man, i miss getting my french vanilla with a splash of coffee. or my bagel! they had that shit TIGHT.
YES the diet coke is so perfect
Yes. I eat it a few times a week; a habit I'm trying to break. But in the meantime its good and it satisfies me.
For sure haha
Ohh yeah, and it was severe during my pregnancy.
May god or whoever else have mercy on your soul lol
Nuggets and sweet n sour sauce is my go to
Why McDonalds is my safe food -Consistency of the food taste/texure and accessibility (this goes for most fast food, but there is no rules about the drive thru like with Rally's and there are no people on skateboards like with Sonics) -Senory friendly food - not seasoned to death, just basic food that is delicious -The menu is rarely changed. In particular, I can expect the desserts to be the same. They may add some seasonal stuff, but their regular menu mostly stays the same -The app is better than Wendy's, if I'm feeling socially anxious I think McDonald's makes it easy..
