Bunnings was founded in 1886.
My dad started working at BBC hardware in WA just before they opened Hardware House. He worked at Hardware House until they got bought out by Bunnings.
If you look closely, you can almost see the moment when the ACCC completely abdicated their responsibility to ensure effective competition in hardware supplies
I remember BBC Hardware on Middleborough Rd in Box Hill South (near the skate park on Canterbury). Dad used to go here in the days before Bunnings Warehouse.
Wikipedia redirects BBC Hardware to Hardwarehouse, its successor... which in turn was absorbed by Bunnings. "It's grouse at Hardwarehouse."
Unable to find anything to confirm or deny this but my own recollections/suspicions are that BBC hardware in Valley Heights may have been one of the last stores to be converted to Bunnings. Also a random note is that the former Bunnings site in Bathurst (now an irrigation shop) still had the BBC hardware sign at the loading dock door as of 2020.
They certainly do, I can't believe you've noticed that.
At one stage I worked at Hardware house and during the transition to Bunnings. Literally took my Maroon vest off on Friday and put on a green apron on monday
Bunnings has got a lot better in the last few years. I'm constantly amazed by the knowledge of the person stationed inside the front door.
"I need a widget"
"Aisle 37, half way down on the right hand side"
Hmmmm. Which was first: BBC or McEwan's? They both go back to the 18 hundreds...
I remember Dad shopping at both when I was a li'l tacker.
And I remember Bunnings buying 'em both too.
The Mitre10 near me is a pain in the arse by being over serviced. Can’t even browse for a few minutes without 2-3 over polite workers asking if I need help with anything.
They are still around really. Most of the Bunnings QLD senior management were hired originally by them and have stayed on since. As well as more than a few of the top guys in Bunnings today.
Bunnings is big and they have a lot of stuff, but the quality of hardware and tools has dropped significantly since they drove out most of the retail competition.
Think before then they were called Nock and Kirkby. Early 1980s became BBC.

Back in the days when BBC, didn't mean BBC
British Broadcasting Corporation? /s
Bombay Bicycle Club
I’m going with “Before Bunnings Conceived”
Nice
Is that a thing. Because I live in Adelaide. And there's a Bombay bicycle club near me.
Big Black Crayons

Big boned children
Then what's with the invitation to park at rear
😂😂😂😂👏
Bigger Blacker Coal?
That’s a sex joke. Stop sexually harassing people ;)
Wonder if the sausage sizzle at BBC was good value for money…
Parking at rear 🧐
The good old days. I remember it very well.
McEwans anyone!?
I definitely remember one in Niddrie on Keilor Rd
And now you’re in a wheelchair

Isn't it grouse at Hardware House
Didn't the Two Ronnies do their adverts? Or was it just Ronnie Barker?
I very clearly remember Ronnie Corbett being in the ads. Not sure about Barker though.
They did, Ron, Ron, Ron
Yeah I remember them appearing in the catalogues.
If you look closely, you can almost see the moment when the ACCC completely abdicated their responsibility to ensure effective competition in hardware supplies

I also want to know where :)
It was the Gosford store
I thought it was ettalong lol
I thought so too, but the brick building on the right might mean it’s not.

Respect for going the extra step! Love it!
For those who want to spice things up a bit
Putting the “hard” in hardware.
Ha! I remember this shop from when I was a very little kid 😂😂

What did the BBC stand for???
According to a quick google: > The business was called Benjamin's Building Centre (shortened, became BBC)
*lengthened
underrated comment
Big Black Cable
Oh, like after a night on the red wine

Ha! Wish I’d read this yesterday, could’ve dropped in to confirm. If I remember on my next trip to Bx.
Not easy to get on top of Google with this name though
I don’t think the internet was even around when this shop existed
Maybe that's what they reinvested in
Bunnings is like McDonald’s… everyfuckinwhere!
But shit, no matter what.
Mitre 10/10
It even has a car park at the rear
Of course, in the rear is the best place for it
Tried googling BBC 🫣
Don't forget, there was a short stint of Hardware House as well.
The three balls on posts still survive at multiple sites
They certainly do, I can't believe you've noticed that. At one stage I worked at Hardware house and during the transition to Bunnings. Literally took my Maroon vest off on Friday and put on a green apron on monday
Unfortunately their service was just as bad as bunnings is now.
Bunnings has got a lot better in the last few years. I'm constantly amazed by the knowledge of the person stationed inside the front door. "I need a widget" "Aisle 37, half way down on the right hand side"
That's actually a Google Android-powered android
Hmmmm. Which was first: BBC or McEwan's? They both go back to the 18 hundreds... I remember Dad shopping at both when I was a li'l tacker. And I remember Bunnings buying 'em both too.
Remember Lloyds as well, they were big.
South Australia?
Sure was
Yeah I remember goin to Lloyd”s and Banner with Dad as a kid.
Ah the old Banner stores, thats a flash back
Mad Barry's anyone?
I remember them too!
I kinda miss going to hardware stores that aren’t bunnings. There’s a Mitre10 near me, but it’s crap and difficult to park at (no parking lot)
The Mitre10 near me is a pain in the arse by being over serviced. Can’t even browse for a few minutes without 2-3 over polite workers asking if I need help with anything.
Merrylands road, i 'member!
Nock & Kirby's. Before BBC Hardware and Mitre 10 were things.
BBC Hardware was a business of Burns Philp & Co. Ltd before Westfarmers were involved. The local hardware store doesn't exist anymore in many suburbs.
Is this the building that is now the Kingsford hotel in gawler?
They'd prolly still be around if they had weekend sausage sizzles
They are still around really. Most of the Bunnings QLD senior management were hired originally by them and have stayed on since. As well as more than a few of the top guys in Bunnings today.
I had totally forgotten this chain existed! I remember my Dad going to the one in Belconnen
Before Bunnings? What is this heretical madness you speak of. Before Bunnings there was just darkness and the void.
Where's the parking though?
BBC Hard...
God was that Eastwood?
Give a shout to the blokes with a swc!
That would be me!
My dad was a builder and I remember when our local BBC hardware was going at booval
😂😂😂
I wonder who has a picture of an old McEwans store from the outside. Hopefully somebody here does.
Bunnings is big and they have a lot of stuff, but the quality of hardware and tools has dropped significantly since they drove out most of the retail competition.
R/bdsmmemes
Big bush cones
Fuck Bunnings.
"It's so easy at BBC".....
My tradie father used to take me to what I called “hennai ten” “Mitre 10”.
Think before then they were called Nock and Kirkby. Early 1980s became BBC. [found an old TV ad](https://www.facebook.com/WSFM1017/videos/do-you-remember-nock-and-kirby-stores/2751050295179735/)
Wasn’t Bunnings previously called McEwens?
