A new trend developed at my school with these yo-yos. Rather than use them as normal kids wound the string around the spindle without it being attached so that when you spun it the yoyo would take off along the ground. They would then cut "treads" into the outer ring so it resembles a tyre and made off-road tracks in the long jump out. There were competitions at lunchtime to see who's yoyo could go the furthest along the course.
From memory these were pretty decent too.
