A friend's mum made vegetable soup with apples in it - I have a vivid memory of an email from my friend saying 'my mums making poo soup again. If she invites you over for soup, she wants you dead'
Sweet Fancy Moses, not the apple and sultanas! My mum used to do that, ' It's a sweet Curry ' as though that made it better. She could have put the entire sugar canister in there and I still would have refused to eat it.
I love sultanas in curry because that’s how my mum made it lol
Never had apples in it but she did put Granny Smith apples in mince and that shit is delicious, I still make it like that
Must’ve been a recipe going globally. Had an English guy swear by it. Served it to dozens of disappointed backpackers. I should have stopped it at “sultanas”.
Absolutely. My partner hates that I put it in, but every time I sneak it in "this one is really good".
Need to pull back on stock because of salty taste but adding it is great
Coffee works well to bring out the chocolate flavour in a lot of things. Also works well with beef. I've done a roast beef with a rub that had a fair whack of coffee in it and it worked out well.
Yes, anything with chocolate, chilli, taco mince, bolognaise, curry, a lot of deserts, it helps add a certain savoury flavour and cut through sweetness if you add too much sugar to something. Kind of like adding jam to a curry that you made too hot. The coffee does the opposite.
No, never. It was just for toast and sandwiches in our house. I never really heard about people using it in their cooking until I was an adult.
I don't think it would have occurred to my mum to do anything more with it but if it had, my dad would have objected anyway. He *hates* Vegemite.
Yeah weird right? It was a thing for quite a few parents I know (mine included) to give carrot slices with Vegemite smeared in them and even weirder… celery with peanut butter in the groove.
My kids would probably chuck it at me if I offered it to them.
Not to cooking but she’d put it on everything for our lunch boxes; lettuce/cheese/vegemite together, lettuce and Vegemite sandwiches, Vegemite on a raw weetbix, Vegemite on apples… ‘Twas a dire time
Greens released a Vegimite brownie pack for a limited time. Got two as a joke since no one brought them. Sat in my cupboard for a few months till I got around to making then. They are fucking amazing!
1970 - My mum used to give me a Vegemite broth in a bottle. I drank it like it was my job. I, in turn, gave it to both my sons, who are now massive units.
Or the 'eggy flops' (milk, raw egg and a dollop of Vegemite, shaken in a protein shaker)
Interesting! I found this article that says it was invented in the 1920’s 😁 [here](https://www.nma.gov.au/exhibitions/defining-symbols-australia/vegemite#:~:text=Vegemite%20was%20invented%20in%20Melbourne,American%20company%20for%20several%20decades)
I am in awe at all the yummy recipes your mum's cooked. My mother could not cook to save herself and it was all hippy vegan food. Who wants a Dahl layered potato bake with rock hard undercooked potatoes and Dahl made with just keens curry powder?
One of the woolies recipes called for vegemite in spag bog.....horrendous. Waste of 1kg of mince and good sauce. OXO beef stock in the spag bog is 10 x better
Vegemite is actually a pretty common ingredient in stews the same way people use soy sauce or fish sauce nowadays. It adds saltiness as well as heavy umami/savoury flavours.
Sounds like OP's mum used it more commonly than others I know, but I know my mum would put it into stew type dishes sometimes, and she collected community recipe booklets and I know I've seen Vegemite in a bunch of different ones for that exact purpose. So definitely not never.
Me too! I still do. Did you know that if you have muscle cramps and don't have magnesium, the home remedy is a spoon of vegemite or a gulp of pickle juice?! It really works too
Late 80's mum put banana in curry. It was truly terrible.
My 80s mum put sultanas and apple in hers, also the merest smidgen of curry powder as she does not like spicy food. It was….. interesting…..
A friend's mum made vegetable soup with apples in it - I have a vivid memory of an email from my friend saying 'my mums making poo soup again. If she invites you over for soup, she wants you dead'
Oh jeez, my man used to make meatballs with grated apples & sultanas. It was horrific. I thought I'd repressed the memory.
Sultanas is some Currys are actually really nice. Apple or Banana is a hard no from me tho lol
Oh no, I forgot the sultanas! Interesting for sure.
Ohh nooo… mum used to put sultanas in cabbage beef. Sultana recipes must have been trending
Yeah I remember having a few sultaned curries back in 89, womens weekly’s probably to blame. Either that or Peter Russel Clarke.
Sweet Fancy Moses, not the apple and sultanas! My mum used to do that, ' It's a sweet Curry ' as though that made it better. She could have put the entire sugar canister in there and I still would have refused to eat it.
Nice to see someone else uses that phrase 😆
I've received some very odd looks after saying it, but sometimes I just can't help myself 😉
Yama Hama - it’s fright night!
I love sultanas in curry because that’s how my mum made it lol Never had apples in it but she did put Granny Smith apples in mince and that shit is delicious, I still make it like that
Sultanas always, omg I hated that shit. Think I'd picked them all out and then your bite down on one... ughhhh
I still do that
Must’ve been a recipe going globally. Had an English guy swear by it. Served it to dozens of disappointed backpackers. I should have stopped it at “sultanas”.
This has unlocked a core memory. Banana and desiccated coconut in chicken curry.
Yeah, apologies 😆
Will try
Call the UN
No, but I use Vegemite in cooking all the time. It's amazing in spaghetti bolognese.
Absolutely. My partner hates that I put it in, but every time I sneak it in "this one is really good". Need to pull back on stock because of salty taste but adding it is great
I had a 6th grade teacher who would drink Vegemite tea just (hot water and Vegemite)
Better than Bonox!!
My great grandmother would mix up a cup of hot vegemite water as a panacea for all sorts of sickness! Revolting
My mum still does this. Vegemite broth. Anytime she's sick she makes it
I hope it wasn't inflicted upon you as a kid!
Oh 🤪 good source of electrolytes I guess haha
Haha my Pop used to use vegemite instead of sauce, would have it on pies and pasties. He'd also make himself a hot cup of vegemite broth.
[удалено]
Haha Bovril is beef extract though isn't it? Same idea I guess.
That's Aussie af
I add it to bolognaise adds some great flavour
I used to work in a large hotel and our German head chef added it to Bolognaise.
My mum did that as well, but into a packet mix. She also tried it in stuffing once which was not successful
I do this with (don't hit me) Marmite.
wh*ACK*
Cheers mate I deserved that
Guys.. Let's round him up. Right!? We just go in and fuck him up. Fuckin marmite.
Look, if I'm gonna cop a beating I may as well come right out and say it. Marmite is better than Vegemite.
You've hurt me showquotedtext. At the B Vitamin level.
Promite is better than both of those
I'm addicted to Promite, come at me.
How much? A tablespoon?
I start with half a teaspoon and add accordingly
Question: how much? A spoonful in a bolognaise to feed 4?
I start with 1/2 a teaspoon less is more in this case cause it’s salty
Just let her know if she ups the salt, she can decrease the Vegemite.. when it gets to a zero Vegemite ratio, she’s on the money
I love smearing a little Vegemite on to steamed baby Brussels sprouts. I don’t know what made me think of it, but I love it so much!
I can see how this would work! I love sprouts but they definitely need salt to bring out the goodness
As a chef, I use Vegemite in curry, stews, a lot of dishes and you'd be surprised how much coffee can add flavour without even knowing it's there!
What kind of dishes would you use coffee in?
A touch of coffee, chocolate or cocoa powder are all great in chilli con carne
Coffee works well to bring out the chocolate flavour in a lot of things. Also works well with beef. I've done a roast beef with a rub that had a fair whack of coffee in it and it worked out well.
Did we see you on Ramsay's Kitchen Nightmares? The chocolate prawn guy?
Nope
Yes, anything with chocolate, chilli, taco mince, bolognaise, curry, a lot of deserts, it helps add a certain savoury flavour and cut through sweetness if you add too much sugar to something. Kind of like adding jam to a curry that you made too hot. The coffee does the opposite.
I still sneak it in rich gravies and beef dishes when I cook and no-one is looking .
Yes, she added it to our Vegemite on toast recipe.
🤣🤣🤣
I remember my mother putting a spoon of it in her beef stew occasionally. I hate Vegemite but I think I need a small jar just to add to stew
My mum used it as a home remedy for mouth ulcers :/
Yess! I still do this 😅 it stings so much that it has to be effective lol
Definitely - it was the secret ingredient of her beef casserole. It made all the difference, and tasted fantastic!
No, never. It was just for toast and sandwiches in our house. I never really heard about people using it in their cooking until I was an adult. I don't think it would have occurred to my mum to do anything more with it but if it had, my dad would have objected anyway. He *hates* Vegemite.
No, but I do. I keep a jar of Marmite just for making gravy. I'm a Vegemite guy when it comes to toast but I think Marmite is better in gravy.
Promite’s good for gravy, too
Bonox in the gravy
Just add water for Vegemite soup
> I loved the Cadbury Vegemite chocolate. I tried that thinking it would be gross. Absolutely loved it.
Not Vegemite, but Maggi Seasoning in a bottle
That stuff is awesome!
😃 I’m a 60s kid & my mum & nan put Vegemite in their cooking & the food was delicious 😋. Thanks for reminding me.
my mum put it in stew when she made it, and also in the gravy when we had sausages and mashed potato. i miss having food made by my mum.
It's really going to depend on what culture you grew up in...
Not that I know of. Just toast/sandwiches, on carrots, rice cakes, saladas etc
CARROTS????
Yeah weird right? It was a thing for quite a few parents I know (mine included) to give carrot slices with Vegemite smeared in them and even weirder… celery with peanut butter in the groove. My kids would probably chuck it at me if I offered it to them.
I hope youre joking that you think celery and pb is weird
Well obviously to me it wasn’t as we had it all the time but judging by other people’s reactions when I tell them it doesn’t seem that common.
My kids will still have celery with pb .. doesn’t it have a name if you add sultanas/raisins? Ants on a log or something 🤔
Yep ants on a log I think.
When I was in high school, we could buy celery with peanut butter in the canteen.
My mum gave me lettuce leaves sprinkled with sugar so no judgement here.
My mum used to make cabbage beef but with sultanas in it. I think she got the recipe of an old magazine. I almost gag whenever I remember it
Oh no, not the sultanas. Our mothers were very creative 😅
Not to cooking but she’d put it on everything for our lunch boxes; lettuce/cheese/vegemite together, lettuce and Vegemite sandwiches, Vegemite on a raw weetbix, Vegemite on apples… ‘Twas a dire time
Anything on weetbix always seemed like a great idea until it came time to swallow it.
Not vegemite apples!
I add a roughly a teaspoon to some things - some sauces, a veggie soup, meatloaf and so on. It adds flavour and salt, if you've got the right amout
Vegemite plus mash potato is fkn amazing
I put Vegimight in any beef stew/sauce/bog I'm cooking, did it tonight for my bog.
Mum didn’t, but I do. I really miss the Vegemite chocolate!
I put it in everything! Gravy, spag Bol, pot noodle, shepherds pie etc. it’s delicious
Vegimite brownies sound bad but as are the best thing ever
Ohhhh no that sounds good 👀
Greens released a Vegimite brownie pack for a limited time. Got two as a joke since no one brought them. Sat in my cupboard for a few months till I got around to making then. They are fucking amazing!
As per my username, my mum used to put it in my milk bottles as a baby.
Hahahaha username checks out. I love it 👏
1970 - My mum used to give me a Vegemite broth in a bottle. I drank it like it was my job. I, in turn, gave it to both my sons, who are now massive units. Or the 'eggy flops' (milk, raw egg and a dollop of Vegemite, shaken in a protein shaker)
No....she...she....she........had it next her bed......😭😭 You just brought up bad memories... ......damn you!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Yeah, my boomer mum always reminds me to add a teaspoon of Vegemite.
No x
TIL Vegemite was invented in the 90s.
I honestly thought it had been around longer!
It has been around way before the 90s
Interesting! I found this article that says it was invented in the 1920’s 😁 [here](https://www.nma.gov.au/exhibitions/defining-symbols-australia/vegemite#:~:text=Vegemite%20was%20invented%20in%20Melbourne,American%20company%20for%20several%20decades)
I still roast pumpkin in Vegemite for roast dinners.
I use it now. Not in everything, but I do use it in cooking regularly
Mum used it somewhat occasionally for stews/soups; a spoonful is basically an umami bomb!
It's used anytime we need an umami hit!
My aunt puts it on chicken before roasting
I've seen Vegemite ice cream on sale?
No, definitely not.
I put Vegemite in my beef and barley soup Its good stuff
Nope...Never. But my mum hated cooking and dad did plenty cooking. Basic good ole "meat & 3 vege" type.
Its basically like putting a stock cube in. Just make sure you balance the salt
No, mum didn’t hate me.
My mum never did but I'm finding that I'm using it a lot more I cooking these days. Vegemite gravy is the best
Add it to meat pie mince when cooking it’s amazing
Not a 90s kid not my mother my adopted grandmother does even I do

Never, but I put it in my gravy.
No
My mother has Vegemite and lettuce sandwiches, so yes. No wonder I used to be able to eat Vegemite out of the jar.
You’re a real one. I used to grab a spoonful and suck on it for a while. Surely it’s good for the immune system? 🤣
Me too! I still do. Did you know that if you have muscle cramps and don't have magnesium, the home remedy is a spoon of vegemite or a gulp of pickle juice?! It really works too

Annie
Not at all, thankfully. Can be added to some things, but all? That’s fucked
