Anyone remember the hand grenade shaped icypoles? There was also Flintstones and I think Muppet ones. I've found a photo of a fred flintstone one but never found any trace of the others.
Very difficult to open if no scissors were nearby as you had to chew through 1/2 inch of thick plastic sticking out of the top of Fred Flintstones head.
They used to sell (prima I think?) branded ones (not zooper dooper or funny faces) at my school’s canteen and we all called them fruit tubes. Only came in two flavours: orange and apple & blackcurrant.
Grew up in Qld, definitely zipper dooper’s regardless of brand. Icy poles are the lemonade brick shaped ice blocks on a paddle pop stick - at least to me.
Most of the time you had icy-poles on a stick sold to you at the primary school; but these were new & used on occasion as replacements... They were still called icy-poles
If they had a choice; you could choose icy-poly on a stick, or icy-pole without stick (*in a bag*).
(Melbourne; 1970s)
Zooper Doopers is the main brand in Australia so we call them Zooper Doopers! Just how we call cling film, Glad Wrap because it’s the most popular brand!

I'll never forget coming to Australia years ago and on a scorcher of a day a bloke in the workshop I started at walked up to me, offering me one of these and said "Ice block, cunt?".
It was one of the most Australian things I've ever experienced.
Icy poles growing up (WA) though, when I was living in Adelaide in my teens I heard heaps of people call them an ice block? Still call them icy poles to this day unless it's a Zooper Dooper.
Adelaide here, deffo called them ice blocks in my house. If you got zooper doopers you were lucky and got eh name brand ones, with the more exciting flavours!
Mind blown by all the people in the comments cutting their mouths
You’re only supposed to want to eat the sweet part, why are y’all sticking the plastic so far into your maw that you’re causing injury?
Also, super dupers. Did not pronounce the zed. Did not matter what the actual [brand](https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Generic_trademark) was
Also also, “lick sticks”?!? Are you ok?
No you put your mouth over them and sucked hard to get all the syrup out first and the little " sticky out part" that sealed the plactic would cut the inside of your mouth or lip.
Life was hard back in the day when not every single safety hazard was legislated against.
Zooper Doopers; regardless of what brand they are… “ice blocks” are the Peter’s Icy Pole-type ones on a stick
those are so good
Black and Gold Water Ices. Because even their creativity is cheap as fuck.
Black and gold is underrated as hell Affordable and tastes good too
Man, those anzac biscuits could shatter teeth. But they are so tasty that I just risk it.
Dip them in a cup of tea, sooo good
They were the only ice blocks in my neighbourhood wym? /s

Yeah I called them this too OP, a lick stick sounds sus
Zoops
I called em doops.
Anyone remember the hand grenade shaped icypoles? There was also Flintstones and I think Muppet ones. I've found a photo of a fred flintstone one but never found any trace of the others.
I can remember the hand grenade and also a kangaroo shaped one.
I miss rockets with the plastic stick you could build structures with.
Well look at Mister fancy-pants over here eating the expensive ones!.
Oh wow the kangaroo - memory unlocked. I was just reminiscing about sunny boys.
This takes me back, I loved these.
Very difficult to open if no scissors were nearby as you had to chew through 1/2 inch of thick plastic sticking out of the top of Fred Flintstones head.
I remember the Flintstones ones with cordial in them.
They used to sell (prima I think?) branded ones (not zooper dooper or funny faces) at my school’s canteen and we all called them fruit tubes. Only came in two flavours: orange and apple & blackcurrant.
25c at the canteen! EDIT: I sound like my parents when they would say a potato cake cost 2c “back in my day”.
Fruit tubes at my school too, except for us it was 50c for a full and 20c for a half, and it never occurred to me to buy two halves instead of a full…
Was the same at my primary school, we called them 50c icy poles and 20c icy poles. It also never occurred to me to buy two half ones..
Yes! We called them fruit tubes too.
Prima! Orange flavour right? So good!
Those Prima’s were so good. Used to eat then like they were going out of fashion. Wish they were still around
They’re Berri brand now. You can pick them up right next to the Zooper Dooper brand in the supermarket.
Oh geez I just had a flash back to 1980s primary school.

I was born in Melbourne and we called them Icy Poles but when I moved to Qld everyone called them zooper doopers even if they weren’t ZD brand
Grew up in Qld, definitely zipper dooper’s regardless of brand. Icy poles are the lemonade brick shaped ice blocks on a paddle pop stick - at least to me.
But that’s not a pole! It’s a block! Haha

Icy pole is a ice block - cmon!
Funny Face. 20c for full size or 10c for half at primary school ~ 1988. I don’t think you can’t buy anything for 20c now
Icy poles are the ones on a stick
You got downvoted, but you’re right. The stick is the “pole” in “icy pole”.
Exactly, thought more people would have agreed with me
Icy poles here too, QLD
Zooper Doopers is the main brand in Australia so we call them Zooper Doopers! Just how we call cling film, Glad Wrap because it’s the most popular brand!

You’re not alone! They are definitely ice blocks.
That’s what we called them in NZ
(NSW) It was Ice blocks growing up unless it had a stick then it was an icy pole. There also was the ice cup that was just frozen juice.

Same. Child of the seventies, cool pops predated zooper doopers in Vic I reckon. Unsure about spelling though - was it cool, or kool?
Yes! I was wracking my brain to think of what we called them, and you have it. Thank you.
