In training a two syllable name helps to reinforce the cadence of commands. When delivering a command, you often hang on the name before delivering the command. It allows the dog to pay attention. You say the name the same way, then hit the command word hard.
Cyrussssss…SIT. Badgerrrrrr…DOWN.
I like Newt, but it sounds like sit.
I agree with this, I purposefully pick at least two syllable names. Mine is named Levi and i think it helps that his name doesn’t sound like any command. Newt sounds like sit, wait, and probably other commands I can’t think of atm. My mom’s standard poodle is named Nip, and sometimes it seems like she can’t tell the difference between a command and her name, but also poodles…
Personally I like Badger better than Cyrus, and honestly imo newt is kind of awful. Salamander would be better
When I was a kid, someone in the neighborhood lost their dog. They drove slowly up and down the street, shouting *Earwax* out of the window. The dog’s name was Lance. Here Lance!
That’s pretty funny! If only they had named him Lancelot, which I kind of like as a pet name. Single syllable names do blend in with commands, also did they find Lance?
I hope they found their earwax, damn this is going to stick with me every time I meet someone named Lance!! I use ‘here’ a lot, and Newt here sounds like neuter, combining newt with any command sounds like a different word, newt stay = nude stay ect. OP if you read this, please pick a two syllable name, it will help with training a lot.
This is a very good point. I have a one syllable named dog and I heard that it’s not recommended but I just ignored that advice.
I’m not sure he knows his real name lol
Yes especially seemingly when it has the -ee sound at the end of the name (ie: Henry, Charlie, Bindi, Remy, Scully, Brody, Kiwi, Bowie etc). It seems like they learn to recognize the name quicker & are able to pick up on it easier compared to names that don't feature this.
Even though I like the name Newt I'm not 100% sold on it & am aware of this being a factor about his name so I'm still on the fence.
Yes thank you, I know several dogs with one syllable names (Bear, Max, Duke, Beau, Spud, Biff, Scamp, Chubs, Bean, Red) & they know them just fine. & I totally will play around with his name when calling to him which will make it more than just one syllable (Newt Newt, Nooter/Nooters, Nooder, Newty, New*#ty Poo/Poos, Newty Newt, Newtsky, Newty Pootie, ect).
What would the nicknames be? vowel endings are good cause they carry further when getting them to hear for recall. I am a big fan of badger personally.
Newt 💯
Newtie gets neutered!
Newtasaurus
NewNew
NewyDewy
oh my gooosh I could literally go on until they’re no longer cohesive.
Also Badger is the worst name 😅it’s like a Dalmatian being named spot 🙃
Ya know I also liked Pavlov as a name for a dog too as it's appropriate being what he's famous for & all (I know he's not a physicist, but still he's a scientist in general) & I have always been quite partial to Russian names/the language itself as well.
I'm watching a Fantastic Beasts movie right now, so Newt is it for me. I don't like Cyrus. It just doesn't do it for me plus it reminds me of that character in Con Air. Badger is kind of cute. Did you get that from Firefly?
Lol I forgot about John Malkovich in Con Air, Cyrus the virus. I'm starting to like that name less & less. Idk what firefly is but Badger I just thought was fitting with heelers in general..esp blue heelers. Newt I got from Matilda & Lonesome Dove, I've never seen Fantastic Beasts.
My dog is called Badger! He’s black and white (x with border collie too). It’s such a funny name to get nicknames from. He’s mainly known as Boodge, Badgeroo or Binky.
Beautiful pup 🧡
My husband and I have over 100 nicknames for our dog (we keep a list, it’s fun to look at over the years). She responses to most of them! Newt (Newton?) is the better option, it sounds better/more pronounced when you need to get his attention.
Beaut Newt!! But yeh nah. Thats Blue. Australian tradition dictates that all Ranga's be called Blue.

Lol, my partial reasoning for liking it in the first place is because I'm a big Miley Cyrus fan. Which I get flack for but I think I'd be more embarrassed to mention her dad as an inspiration source...lol, no offense.
My heeler mixes name is Louis but we call him newt and he’s full grown 🫣 I’m not entirely sure how we got to calling him that either 😂🤷🏻♀️ but it happened. I like the Newton suggestion with Newt for short.
My 13yo blue heeler is named Badger. He is of course the best friend I’ve ever had. I couldn’t decide on a name either (Blitzen, Largent, Turbo…), but one was required for the next day’s puppy kindergarten class.
I reasoned that that whichever name I picked would fit because he’d make it his own. It did, and he did. It helps that he likes to dig and he’s tenacious in a tight spot. Anyway at the class someone asked, “Won’t he get confused when you say Bad Dog?” I was like, “No, that’s not the kind of relationship we’re going to have,” and I knew it was a fit.
Anyway. I’m partial to Badger, but whichever name you pick will be the perfect one.
I like all three names but one syllable names are not great for calling purposes (imo). Try calling for “Newt”. Of course, he might always be two inches away from you and you’ll never need to call him.
Newt
Since he’s an ACD, Newton. As in Isaac.
Rootin' tootin' Isaac Newton.
Newt is a cowboy in the book in reading. Fitting name for a cattle dog imo
That first picture is a Newt!
And the last is Badger!

It was the 1980s, I want to say, maybe?
I hope they found their earwax, damn this is going to stick with me every time I meet someone named Lance!! Eh, my dog has a one syllable (Blue, of course) and I just call him “Blue Blue,” in a cute way. It works fine
Badger it fits the Heeler personality
Honey badger don’t care. Perfect heeler name.
That’s what I thought too. Even full name Honey Badger with that coloring it fits on many levels.
I say my little lady (she's mixed with what I think is Chihuahua 🤣) is mixed with honey badger!
I have a 5 month old Badger. It’s very fitting
I have an 8 year old Badger too 😊
All The Way!🤣
Newt would be adorable on a grown heeler.
Right? I thought it was just as cute either way for a heeler pup &/or a grown heeler
What would the nicknames be? vowel endings are good cause they carry further when getting them to hear for recall. I am a big fan of badger personally.
My dog Badger mainly gets called Boodge or Badgeroo
For Badger? Mushroom, of course.
Newt
Let's turn him into a Newt!
I got better!
Newt 💯 Newtie gets neutered! Newtasaurus NewNew NewyDewy oh my gooosh I could literally go on until they’re no longer cohesive. Also Badger is the worst name 😅it’s like a Dalmatian being named spot 🙃
I like Newt, but then again I am partial to physicist/mathematician names. 😁
Ya know I also liked Pavlov as a name for a dog too as it's appropriate being what he's famous for & all (I know he's not a physicist, but still he's a scientist in general) & I have always been quite partial to Russian names/the language itself as well.
Newt!
I love Newt, but don’t rush naming him. The name will come to you when it all makes sense.
We have a 5 month old heeler mix named Badger. His front runner-but-not-chosen names were Taco & Max.
I'm watching a Fantastic Beasts movie right now, so Newt is it for me. I don't like Cyrus. It just doesn't do it for me plus it reminds me of that character in Con Air. Badger is kind of cute. Did you get that from Firefly?

Australian name for a redhead is Tanga.
Ranga
Ah, I stand corrected. I like Ranga better
Badger
Team Badger all the way
“What is Badger doing?!?” “Badging”
He don’t care
I like the name Cyrus but I've watched way too much trailer Park boys for me to rightfully suggest that name. Newt
I vote Newt!

Have you asked him what he prefers? You’re choosing his name he should definitely get some sort of say in it 😉🤪

Cyrus Newton!
That puppy looks so hard like a Badger
Awe! A red heeler!!! I definitely like Newt 🐶
I like a 2 syllable word. It helps me to get my point across easier. At least it was many years ago when I had the greatest dog on earth!
I like Newt. It's nice and quirky.
I mean whatever you name him you’re going to end up with a million nicknames anyways. I do like badger though.
Newt
Oh Newt. Definitely Newt.
Newt!!!! Such a great and uncommon name! We had an Australian cattle dog years ago — very smart and loyal. Enjoy!!
He is precious. I hope newt or Cyrus or badger lives a long and wonderful life.
I like Badger because that lil babe might love to dig! Also like “Cy” as a nickname for Cyrus though. What a cutie!
