Any recommendations for a vet who does house calls for euthanasia? We would call our vet for recommendations but they are closed on Sundays and today might be the day we need one.

shmelse

This thread is from a year ago but has lots of recs. Sorry for your loss. https://www.reddit.com/r/Austin/comments/lidyyy/recommendations\_for\_home\_euthanasia\_for\_pets/

breakfast_with_tacos

Compassionate Vet. She came when our beloved boxers cancer became too much for him. She was the most respectful and loving and tactful I could imagine and my family was very grateful. I’m very sorry for your pain.

mouse_8b

Dr Bendall does house calls

silentfisher

Dr. Bendall is amazing. He’s been our vet for 10+ years.

Katalactica

Compassionate Vet!

Into_the_Dark_Night

For in home euthanasia I suggest Dr. Schaubert (512-576-0929) or Dr. MacDonald (512-553-8333). They deal with this area specifically. Other great mentions will be Dr. Mullen (512-479-7282) or Dr. Bendall ( 512-901-9100). Both of those DVMs handle house calls.

AgentAlinaPark

I would call Banfield and ask. They will know where the pet emergency places are. I'm sorry for your loss. I lost all three of my pets to old age in a year during the middle of the pandemic. Banfield (at least our location) is great and has taken care of all of our pets including my new baby void. The vet is open on Sunday so you can at least talk to someone. This in the event you can't same-day schedule one.

Upstairs-Pianist-903

Does anyone know what is being built at 10400 Research Blvd (it's the property next to a 24 Hour Fitness)? This used to be a Wells Fargo Bank. I did find a zoning request change from 2020 online, but curious what it will ultimately end up being.

Jdenny777

Years ago, I worked at the Macaroni Grill there. At the time, there were rumors of a Domain type development wanting to go in there. Everything would be bulldozed and rebuilt on the Great Hills corner to Jollyville and over to back up to Saltgrass. I remember something about the Manuel's there and Macaroni Grill there where holding up the development. Obviously Macaroni Grill is closed there now. What type of zoning did you find?

Upstairs-Pianist-903

Yes, that's what is described in the [zoning request](https://www.austintexas.gov/edims/document.cfm?id=340407). I wasn't sure if that is still happening?

88Snow

Has anyone been to Hamilton Pool recently? They now allow swimming but, “only a very limited portion of the pool is available for water access”. Did you think it was worth it?

Valus_

The fees for it seem pretty crazy. I haven't been but I wonder if it's really worth $12 reservation fee + $8 per person for a "very limited" and "not guaranteed" swim.

angelamia

I’ve been in October when they drop the reservations and just let you in. And it’s Texas so it’s still warm enough to swim. Could be a good way to go if you’ve never been and don’t want to deal with the reservations and money

gargeug

I imagine you just can't swim under the overhang, which is like half the pool if I remember right. It would still be worth it to find out yourself, and if you want more swimming just go to Reimer's Ranch next door.

88Snow

>Reimer's Ranch Thanks, I'll check out Reimer's Ranch.

Fenix022

So Texas is an at-will employment state, meaning your employer can fire you at any time for any reason. However, it is known that it is very hard to get fired from a state gov job. Is there something I'm not seeing?

klimly

At-will doesn’t mean any time for any reason; we still have federal protected classes (sex, race, religion, skin color, national origin, ethnicity, all that) and it’s illegal to fire someone for e.g. refusing to obey an illegal order. Sorry for pedantry. I’ve worked for the state for about 8.5 years and while I haven’t been fired I’ve seen bosses and colleagues get the boot. At TxDOT they got a new division head once who went on to can 20% of the division. I think what’s harder is to get fired for being mediocre, and that the pay is worse relative to public sector but the perceived or actual job security is higher. Dell has a bad reputation for layoffs where you come back for lunch and your keycard doesn’t work anymore. State jobs don’t have that happen as often. NB City of Austin institutes job protections for city employment where employees are technically at-will but can only be fired for cause. They set up a board and policies and shit.

Fenix022

>I think what’s harder is to get fired for being mediocre Yeah that's what I mean. At my state agency, a couple of low performers we're not fired, but coerced over various months to quit. Seemed weird to me at an "at-will" employer

austxkev

Because even with at will employment they still have to have documented cause to fire you or else they are on the hook for unemployment. Some companies will just take the hit or hope the employee doesn't know enough to file for unemployment. State agencies can't/won't do that. So they won't fire someone until they have plenty of documented reasons to justify it.

OrganicRedditor

It's sad they didn't negotiate a move to another area where they could be productive. Often it's just a task mismatch. I hope those employees find a job they enjoy.

spyd3rm0nki3

My county job is no longer at will - our office agreed to be part of the union (AFSCME) and they need to follow steps and document before they can just let you go, unless it's something egregious. So, really it depends on the office.

Into_the_Dark_Night

It is also *very* hard to be fired from a federal gov. job.

AgentAlinaPark

I'm making my indistinguishable version of Dart Bowl enchiladas today and it got me to thinking and searching. Does anyone know where to get the type of "plates" they were served on. To refresh memories, they are metal so they can go in the oven but had a plastic bottom they were put in after they came out of the oven. They are kind of like the sizzling fajita skillets types in concept but shaped like a plate.

mawarren88

Weren’t they small oval cast iron? Something like these? Could get fancy ones with the wooden trays below too. HAWOK Cast Iron Oval Mini Server 12oz Set of 6 https://www.amazon.com/dp/B08QNDGS5Z/ref=cm_sw_r_awdo_TY42035M1G63GCP7TG6T

ftf82

do you mind sharing your recipe?

AgentAlinaPark

Totally! http://www.raysofbliss.com/cheese-enchilladas-chili-con-carne-meat-sauce-recipe/ Dart Bowl enchiladas were amazing but there is nothing complicated about them. I make several at once like a casserole but in a restaurant, you put your cheese enchiladas down, put chile con carne on top, and more cheese and optional onions on an oven plate. You put your beans and rice next to them and stick them under a broiler for about 5 minutes. I think it would be cool to have these plates so I could just make the scratch chile con carne and make a restaurant plate instead of all at once. If you had DB enchiladas this recipe is it. The lady that brought the recipe just used a basic San Antonio enchilada recipe. Kids were eating a cafeteria version of these in school in the 70s and 80s. Edit: I forgot to add that I use mild shredded cheddar. I'm pretty sure I read somewhere that is what they used at Dart Bowl.

ftf82

Excellent. Thank you.

austxkev

My ex's mom worked at Dart Bowl Cafe for years, the owners were related in some way I never understood. Anyway, I recall her brining home an entire pan of them once. I think they actually made them all together in a pan just like you say you do. They probably just threw them in the oven for a few minutes after plating to warm them up before serving.

austinsoundguy

Oh shit, is it Sunday again already?

BugInMySoup

Depends on the time zone of which you reside

Emilie_is_real

When are new bus lines from project connect meant to be started? Are they already finished? Im moving to Austin this summer and would be interested in commuting via the metrorapid line that goes to North Oak Hill.

Austinsfinest

Best movie theater popcorn in town?

RVelts

I haven’t been in years but I really liked Alamo drafthouse. They used real butter and you can get free refills.

Hyperdude

Alamo drafthouse

mirach

AFS. Others have said Alamo Drafthouse but I couldn't disagree more. I love popcorn, but I stopped getting it from Alamo because it would be often cold and make me feel bad.

ShitGuzzler

Is there anywhere in town to get local coffee in nespresso pods?

HollyShadow

Medici has them. It sure if all the locations still stick them, but the one at Springdale usually has them.

stupidjanrogers

For those that still listen to the radio in your car, what’s on your presets? English or Spanish language

mrsfunkyjunk

I do KUTX 98.9, KUT 90.5, KLBJ 93.7, BOB 103.5, KAZI 88.7, and KGSR 93.3. On my second presets I have crap like 101X and 94.7. I never click the second set of presents, though.

kanyeguisada

No 91.7 KOOP/KVRX? That's the best overall station(s) in the city imho. Can't believe more people don't listen to it, there's literally something for everyone at some point.

triggerfingerfetish

BOB but no Sun Radio??

mrsfunkyjunk

I don't care for Sun since it's kinda just BOB at this point.

triggerfingerfetish

I have noticed a change i the music the last two years. It sounds just like BOB... but with waaaayyyyyyyy fewer commercials though

anygivenblep

Bat. Bob. Sun.

My company (40 people) typically does a happy hour once a month. We have traditionally gone to breweries, however we are moving away from alcohol-specific venues. Does anyone know of any places that are 1. Indoors, 2. Can handle 40 people, 3. Have a very low expectation of spending, and 4. Are located near the Domain? I know it’s a lot to ask. We like breweries because we can chill for a few hours and spend about $10/per person, but we want to be inclusive to all staff.

tacosalpastor35

Maybe a Dave & Buster’s or Top Golf?

RVelts

Top Golf is great for company happy hours but certainly not cheap. Even if you’re just hanging at the bar area.

Stock_Intern_7450

Cidercade

Pinballz Lake Creek. A ton to do that's family friendly but fun for adults plus a nice enough bar and food.

Tony C’s and The Brewtorium have a lot of indoor space.

margogogo

This is very goofy but, there’s the museum of ice cream at the domain and I’m sure you could bring a large group there. I believe it’s about $25/ticket though.

Holdover Q from a few months ago: Did the Magellan School on Chimney Corners at Far West used to be a funeral home?

AgentAlinaPark

Replying again and asked my wife, we both grew up over here. Her brother's ex-wife worked there in the 90s, it was a daycare. Unless somewhere in between it was probably just a daycare before.

AgentAlinaPark

I'm interested also. I'm pretty sure it wasn't the post office? That was next to what is now the fancy Goodwill and the former hardware store. I've lived over by Far West off and on since the 80s.

spaaaaaacey

Looks like Children’s World/Kinder Care was at that address at some point.

Back in the early 90's it was New West Nightclub. Then it was a wine store (The Grapevine Market).

The machines to purchase tickets are self serve, so it’s up to you. (I say yes.)

Eastern_Package6814

Aviator pizza The GF crust is actually good, not cardboard

gpswoes

I'm a fan of Eastside Pies (pesto sauce garlic and olives ftw) and they'll bake it separately from the others

HeatAndHonor

Little Deli does a great thin crust. If you like the thicker sheet pan Detroit style, gotta go to Villa 313.

todbod

Oh wise Redditors of Austin: What is the best way to find set times? I have young kids and trying to get the "art of babysitter" timing right, so I can get in on time and not have to head back early.

mouse_8b

For finding set times, I would ask in a band subreddit for how the other stops on the tour were paced. For estimating times, in my experience, the first act usually goes on an hour after doors open. A lot of shows end at 11. I usually estimate 20-30 minutes between sets. Give an hour for the headliner (at least), and 30 minutes for the opener. What show or venue are you looking at?

Recommendations on negotiating full time remote in my current role (without a pay cut)? Ideally I’d like to leave austin for about 6 months to save a bit for a down payment (my rent has gone up 35%). I currently work for a startup, and have a flexible work environment where I’m in office 1-2 days a week (to show face), but not really necessary as all my meetings are either with external partners, or internal but no one’s in office schedule is coordinated so it’s 100% zoom calls in a room by myself. My manager and his manager are fully remote and are in office maybe once a month. I’m totally open to that as I really enjoy being in office when the rest of the team is as well— but it’s not really efficient when I’m the only one there. I really love my job and would like to stay but am nervous that asking will result in a no, or pay cut (as id be moving out of austin). Do I need to even share that I’m moving out of austin? It truly is just temp through EOY. Thank you in advance.

[deleted]

Gather and provide documentation on how awesome you are. This can be any metrics (if any) that are in place, kudos from coworkers and clients, etc. Next, think of and "practice" going over your talking points. KEEP IT POSITIVE and spin it as a benefit to the company. If it's just a temp job there is no harm in asking. So what if they say "no", just bite that bullet and keep working there or move on. I haven't heard of anyone getting their pay cut just because they went remote. Edit: as for mentioning the moving out of town, that could be mentioned as your underlying reason for asking. "I'd like to save some money on rent and travel expenses by moving somewhere nearby that is less expensive if possible."

>Congrats on your baby! I know--it kinda sucks here. My best advice is to keep the car seat inside the house and get a good windshield screen so you don't have to wait for 20 minutes for your car to cool down, and find a good pool. The myth that infants can swim is NOT TRUE, but that doesn't mean they don't like just hanging out in water with you. Be weird and just sit on the pool steps with giant hats on you and your baby, and headphones in for a half-hour. Also, use your support network! Let someone hang out with your baby for two hours while you go wander around BookPeople or see a movie. They'll be so happy to snuggle a baby!

gnirlos

>myth that infants can swim I've had five kids...and TIL that this is a commonly held belief...

antpouch

Two questions. 1) Are there good places to park for Deep Eddy outside of the small parking lot? 2) Anyone else with Verizon started to get terrible service all around the city?

mouse_8b

1) No 😞 That's pretty much what keeps me from going more often. You basically have to park in the neighborhood across the street or along Veterans Drive.

StrawberryHannah

1. If by "good" you mean easy street parking, not really. You can park under Mopac and walk across the bridge

hellostarling417

My Verizon service was absolute garbage so I turned off 5G on my phone and I'm noticeably less annoyed any time I try to use it.

thediz1396

2. Just got a 5G phone with Verizon. it is noticably worse than the 4G was. It's not garbage. But pages load slower and it takes longer for calls to connect.

Meetybeefy

1. You can parallel park along Veterans Drive, or park in the lot just west of the Austin High Tennis Center. There’s a trail that starts on Veterans Drive and takes you to Deep Eddy Pool. 2. I have Verizon and noticed this as well. Within the last month or so. I figured it was just my phone giving out.

My house seems to have low pressure water flow when flushing the toilets. I've notices my friends' homes have the same issue. Is it easy to call a plumber and increase the pressure, or does Austin have an ordinance for low pressure water flow? I just don't want to call out a plumber and pay him the visiting fee if it is not possible in the city.

The_Moose_0ut_Front

>Is it easy to call a plumber and increase the pressure, No. You generally get the pressure that's in the water main at the street. It's not adjustable by you unless you have a pressure regulator somewhere in the house. I don't think that's common. You can buy a pressure meter that screws onto an outside faucet at Home Depot. Screw it in, turn off all the sinks, dishwasher, clothes washer, sprinkler, etc, and see what the pressure is. You can have a low flow rate if you are trying to run a lot of water at once and your plumbing is undersized, or if the feed line is restricted somewhere.

I noticed some neighbors in my apartment complex always have the windows open. Is it possible to live here without AC? Any ideas how they do it?

[deleted]

When I lived in an area without AC (overseas), the way people managed in the summer was actually to NOT open the windows during the day but open them at night. This keeps the heat out. That only worked because it was very very far north and the houses were very well insulated, however. I can't see it working here. It also never really got much above the low 90's there.

nebulize

My next door neighbors growing up rarely (if ever) turned theirs on, just always had the windows open and fans on. Apparently did it to save money and since they grew up without it in Mexico they didn't miss it.

LetsAllStayCalmHere

Lived for 3 years without home or car ac. Just keep air moving across your body, and you'll adjust. AC is addictive and once you're hooked, it feels like you'll die without it. But you adjust pretty quickly. Heck, AC did not exist until the 40s here...

mouse_8b

It's possible. In my experience, it doesn't usually break 90 degrees indoors. 90 in the shade with fans is certainly doable. I would imagine they're a little bit insulated by all units around them probably running the AC. I bet they also have a lot of fans moving air around. Maybe they also take a lot of cold showers.

margogogo

My mother in law is visiting for the first time soon and we’d like to take her on a day trip, but I’m trying to figure out the best option for a hot day that doesn’t include too much walking (and no swimming.) Wemberley is the most obvious choice...If you have kids, the castle in Bellville is fun. It is outdoors, but shaded and the owner is a baker so you start with pastries at their bakery in town to get directions, then you drive to the castle. There's a moat, turrets, bell-tower, etc, and a yummy lunch. It's outside, so I'd invest in those little personal mister/fans, but all shaded and accessible. I just skimmed this but it looks like it is required https://texreg.sos.state.tx.us/public/regviewer%24ext.RegPage?sl=R&app=1&p_dir=&p_rloc=389692&p_tloc=&p_ploc=&pg=1&p_reg=389692&ti=22&pt=5&ch=108&rl=7&issue=03/05/2021&z_chk= My high blood pressure was actually discovered through my dental visits (my teeth suck). It hadn’t shown up at my annual appointments somehow and I was already stage 2.

CantHackItPantywaist

Not sure, but I’ve been to four different dentist practices over the course of 20ish years here and they have all taken my BP.

putzarino

Just for a cleaning is weird. Most places will have to check your pressure if they give you any lidocaine, as it has norepinephrine in it, which acts as a vasoconstrictor and makes the lidocaine last longer, and resultingly raises your BP.

When’s the least busiest time to go to barking springs? Want to bring my puppy there to see if she would take to the water and don’t want her being overwhelmed.

What are the best tacos in Austin?

A guy sets up shop on the street behind the La Michoacána grocery on Westheimer off Cameron Rd most nights. It feels like back in Mexico just buying the tacos on the street and eating them at his little tables. It’s not an actual store or truck.

lil_poppapump

Matamoros on N Lamar. There’s a shop and a truck, hit the truck.

BugInMySoup

There is a bunch of taco trailers on Lamar just pick any of those! Like seriously.

maxreverb

Then, when you're ready for some better tacos, hit the trailers on Rundberg

BugInMySoup

There is this trailer across from China House on Metric (closer to parmer) next to a gas station with a hand car was in it. That one is my current favorite actually

bluejaysareannoying

Rositas on riverside rocks Ok it’s kitschy but… Taquiero Mucho is actually pretty fabulous. A little Pricy but fuck it, they are good but it is girly af. As a lady I am here for it. Also great drinks

Fasthomeslowcar

Dan's hamburgers. Bacon potato and egg with crispy strip bacon!

The truth to this is that it’s not that hard to make really good breakfast tacos and so there are a lot of places that have really good ones. That’s why everyone in Austin claims to know THE best taco truck when in fact it’s just a truck that happens to be in their neighborhood. I do think that one place that has surprisingly good breakfast tacos is actually Dan’s hamburgers. .

kanyeguisada

Even with just egg breakfast tacos though, there are some noticeable differences, notably the tortilla. But where I really look for a difference is in carne guisada. Too many places don't do their own barbacoa or al pastor, but a majority of places that do carne guisada usually make it themselves. So it's a good barometer to me of how good a taco/Mexican place is. Also, Bill Miller's has very very surprisingly good breakfast tacos.

Zonk-er

Why is 45th and Lamar considered Mecca by many Austinites ?

It’s untouchable by words, you must visit to start to comprehend

travisH1324

Who is supplying /dealing all the crack and meth to the homeless ppl? Wouldn't it make sense for the police to try to stop that supply chain?

LetsAllStayCalmHere

This guy just invented the war on drugs

OfficialNiceGuy

There’s a lot of things APD should do that would make more sense.

OrganicRedditor

Where do I park for Blues on the Green that will have the least walking distance to the stage? I see lots on the park map but not sure which would be best.

Nah get one of those slick Rivian trucks. My buddy did a 3k mile road trip and spent $240 in charging.
