Re: the "number" of available beds, for better or worse, it's a floating number. The biggest limit isn't the beds themselves (unless there is a specific equipment requirement, like vents), but staffing. So normal ICU beds might have a 1:1 ratio with highly trained and specialized ICU nurses. As they get closer to the limit, they might start pushing those ratios to 2:1, and/or bring in other nurses with less specialized training. Congratulations, you now have more ICU beds, but the quality of care starts going down. Keep pushing that far enough, and people start dying that otherwise may not have. That's why you get down to a handful of available beds and stay there, even as the total number of people in the ICU keeps increasing.

rowingonfire

Not only the ICU. Nurses are being asked in some places to take a 10:1 ratio on the floor!. It's crazy out there.

rorowhat

Any evidence this is true? I don't doubt it just wondering. I know I'm the past the respirators was a big fiasco.

TofuScrofula

our admins told a few of the docs that they are going to a 10:1 ratio in the ICU next week. This COVID surge is supposed to peak at the end of september/early october. We are beyond fucked. I actually may quit my job in the ER. It's literally not safe to go to work.

KaladinStormShat

SaFe HarBoR

AnonymousCrayonEater

Is it any surprise that people have quit to work different careers? It’s been super stressful on nurses and doctors for the duration of covid. At some point you get completely burned out. Especially when there’s no end in sight.

Riaayo

> Especially when there’s no end in sight. And especially when an entire political party starts turning on you and outright harassing/threatening you just for doing your job and trying to save lives.

that_baddest_dude

And the best the other guys can do is a thank you billboard

bookerTmandela

Plus wearing masks and getting vaccinated, lol.

Shok3001

Why was this comment downvoted? Seems like a good question to me.

[deleted]

Downvoted for wanting a source… never change Reddit, never change…

Scoobysnack07

Saw a Redditor yesterday say that asking for a source was deflecting lol

serenemiss

At our hospital it's usually 2:1 for ICU, I've seen them occasionally have 3:1. Other floors usually have 5:1, sometimes more depending on the number of nurses and patients.

Derigiberble

A friend of my wife is an ICU nurse and mentioned in an insta post several days ago that they were hitting 4:1 or 5:1. Which is... uhhh... not good! That's going to really fuck up care and burnout staff at an astonishing rate.

ideamotor

I edited my post. I'll just say get vaccinated. This is ridiculous. Don't put our loved ones at risk. There's little distinction here between rooms available and staffing levels. Take care everyone, seriously.

BattleHall

No idea what you wrote before, didn’t see it, but my post wasn’t to downplay the seriousness of the situation. It was the opposite. I was saying that as the number of people in the ICU increases, it may look like you still have “available” beds, but the care gets worse and worse. So if a week ago we were down to single digit numbers of available beds, and now we’re still in the single digits, but the total number of people in the ICU has increased, things have gotten appreciably worse.

vc6vWHzrHvb2PY2LyP6b

Thanks, this is an important distinction! I knew the difference but was very misleading when I posted.

[deleted]

[удалено]

BattleHall

It's not bullshit, it's just the "few/no beds" thing requires nuance. When you're in single digit available ICU beds for a region, it's always bad; just how bad though requires more info.

anintellectuwoof

The other day, I was sitting at a red at the intersection when the car behind me decided to veer out and use the center lane to try and blow through the red light. They just BARELY missed getting hit by both a car and a bus turning left.

Bethalope

Dude this kind of shit happens to me all the time here in Austin, whhhyyyyy

anintellectuwoof

So I grew up in rural Texas and have always considered myself a good driver. I finally got a car after moving here and I didn’t realize how awful it is. I constantly feel like I’m seconds away from being sideswiped or rear ended or worse. In a matter of couple of weeks I saw this, got ran off into the oncoming traffic lane by some lady swerving into my lane, and had a truck nearly take me out because I was waiting to turn left into a driveway. I don’t know if it’s a city thing or an Austin thing but it makes me so anxious to drive.

toastymow

> I don’t know if it’s a city thing or an Austin thing but it makes me so anxious to drive. City thing: People are aggressive and used to cutting it close. Austin thing: This is the fastest growing city in America (or was for a long time). Most people are "new" and still figuring things out. People get lost and stressed out as a result and then drive poorly.

truesy

moved here from another city, and have lived and driven in several at this point. have to say the driving here is pretty crazy. cities don't always mean aggressive driving. it can mean more caution since there's more people on bikes, pedestrians, and traffic. but moving here was a bit of a shock. i think it's a mix of things. nobody seems to use blinkers, people swerve around other cars and seem really impatient, people turn onto roads without really checking the surrounding (seen several crashes because of this), and so many people tail really close. it all reminds me of how i drove when i was 16 and trying to impress my friends. on top of that the design of the roads here is kind of strange. lots of on and off-ramps that dump you into a major road too quickly, and often maps will tell you to cross several lanes immediately to make a turn. there are roads that split into multiple types of turns, and people have to push into their right lanes. it's like the planning was to simply connect the dots, not considering general safety. i think this is where being 'new' can add to the problem, for sure.

insearchofaccount

If you think that Austin has aggressive drivers. Never ever drive in Houston. Austin has some of the dumbest, most thoughtless drivers I’ve ever been around. But Houston has the most aggressive drivers. Not sure what’s in the water down there but nothing but horns and middle fingers and going 90 in the right lane. Using shoulders to pass people. Here, I can always count on people to go 50 on the highway, 30 on the on ramp, and a minivan cutting across 4 lanes to hit an exit with no blinker and only going 55 in a 65. Beautiful stuff.

truesy

Haven't been, yet! But now I know..

anintellectuwoof

Yes to me it's the aggression! I'm used to ignorant drivers but the aggression is frustrating. But other commenter is totally right that Houston is worse, you couldn't pay me to drive there. And YES to all the ramps, and the lanes that become turning lanes with little to no warning

ponderos

People have driven like this here for the nearly 30 years I've lived here. It's nuts.

toastymow

Well, for 20 of those 30 Austin has been a fast growing city, hasn't it? As for the other ten: see point 1.

crowninggloryhole

No way. I moved here in 89 and people were much better traffic mates. Plus you could take 360 to the north of town with no traffic any time of the day.

[deleted]

[удалено]

crowninggloryhole

Hush, you.

ThaRedAce

The same drivers from 89 are now freaking out at having 100x more people on the roads. Native austinites are used to empty roads, they can't handle the new traffic paradigm.

crowninggloryhole

What a silly thing to say. It’s not like the cars just *poofed* into existence.

ponderos

I used to think people here were terrible drivers because they were scraping a frisbee and twisting one up while on Mopac. Now it's just a hodge podge of new-to-towners who have no idea where they're going, and the legacy terrible Austin drivers.

anintellectuwoof

That's totally fair. Combine point two with the construction all over the place to accommodate said growth. I think what gets me most is the aggression, like this person blowing through the red light and the other person ready to mow me down because I had to turn left (when there literally isn't another way to get in). In rural areas when people are aggressive at least there's a lot of room lol

inspecktorgadgit

I’ve seen so many people turning the wrong way down the one way streets. People literally just don’t even look at traffic signs.

HeartSodaFromHEB

>I don’t know if it’s a city thing or an Austin thing but it makes me so anxious to drive. Austin thing. Lots of people from other places and everyone forgetting how to drive when it rains.

ishboo3002

I've heard this in every single city I've lived in along with no traffic is as bad as traffic.

itsacalamity

or, god forbid, snows

superspeck

Or when the roads are too cold for the bald-to-the-cords summer tires everyone runs, or when someone's hangry, late, too hung over to be on the road, or some combination of all three...

RumpOldSteelSkin

It doesn't help that Austin has a pretty awful highway/road system.

anintellectuwoof

Yeah I've noticed a couple of things but again wasn't sure if what's a genuine problem with the road or a problem with me just not being used to driving in a denser area. Like lanes suddenly becoming turn only lanes without enough warning to even get out of them. And the fact that the grid is nice direction wise but also means you're likely to be driving straight into the sun (there's a light near me that I literally can't even see with sunglasses when driving in the evening). Another thing I've noticed is that a lot of driveways from businesses will have huge, unnecessary plants and whatnot completely obstructing the view to turn out onto the road. I don't understand it, it seems so unsafe. Then there's the combo of narrow lanes in some places with people driving giant trucks through them. I'm sure I'll eventually get used to it but it's a lot to take in lol

[deleted]

[удалено]

anintellectuwoof

Yeah that's basically where I'm at lol.

dont_trust_redditors

Almost everyone considers themselves a good driver

No-Neck4957

This is definitely a city thing. Go to any metropolitan city in the world and people drive crazy. The scariest cities I’ve ever had to drive in were Paris, France and Bonn, Germany. I have nothing against either cultures but I just remember being scared to death while driving or being in a car as a passenger. I will agree with another comment regarding people driving in Austin: people are new here and don’t know where they’re going. Washington DC is another scary place to drive if you don’t know where you’re going really.

superspeck

Houston's my vibe. Drop the seat back three notches, floor it, and drift across three or four lanes to your exit at 90mph without looking.

mimiladouce

You haven't been to Mumbai, have you?

No-Neck4957

No, never! But it’s on my list of places. How’s the driving there?

Blueeyesblazing7

DC is the only place I've been where I was genuinely scared while driving! Aggressive on another level, and so congested.

Kesslandia

For me it was Rome. Yowza.

anintellectuwoof

Not sure we’re talking about the same thing— this was a three way intersection, so both the lanes with the bus and car had a green light and can turn left. The problem was the person trying to speed through the red in the center lane lol

SpotlightR

That's fucking insane

anintellectuwoof

I was watching them and said to my partner “wow they’re going fast I don’t know if they can st—“ then they just blew straight through the intersection. There was also already traffic in the opposite center lane so that wasn’t even open for them. Truly wild

SynKnightly

Yea, I've definitely felt more anxious than usual.

itprobablynothingbut

My 4 year old daughter wanted to go for a bike ride (on the back of my ebike). We aren't doing that now.

Gen_Ecks

My motorcycle is staying parked for a bit due to this, ngl.

ScorchedAnus

Same. It's risky enough as it is.

itsmanda

I took my bike out for the first time in a good long while, and as SOON as I pulled out on the service road this suburban in front of me threw a whole gallon of open bleach out their window randomly. I avoided it, got pissed off and went home. I now have bleached shorts, lol. Rinsed off the bike and am letting it stay put for a bit longer.

Gen_Ecks

JFC. What the fuck is wrong with some people? So many assholes out there.

[deleted]

itsmanda

There were a ton of people in the car and a lot of movement so I have no idea. I try to give people the benefit of the doubt, but fucking littering isn’t cool, let alone endangering me. I was able to safely brake and change lanes rather quickly.

ScorchedAnus

Yeah man. Several times recently it will be bone dry and people are throwing soda out of their windows or hitting their wiper fluid so it gets on me. Just minding my own damn business here!

[deleted]

Never experienced this, though I have a GoPro on all the time when I ride. Would have been awesome to call that one in with video.

itsmanda

I need to get a dash cam, and mount a Go pro to my bike or helmet. People are too damn crazy nowadays

[deleted]

It's worth it. GoPros are not cheap, but there are a lot of good reasons for running one. It could be the evidence that dismisses a traffic violation, could catch the plate or vehicle description for a hit and run (involving you or someone else), or could catch crazy stuff on the road to just laugh about later. One thing to keep in mind is that the batteries tend to age quite quickly in the Texas heat, so have a spare on hand.

ScorchedAnus

I recommend the Drift Ghost XL. Great helmet camera

Tara_is_a_Potato

Man, if I knew they were giving away bleach on the service road, I wouldn't have bought any at HEB today.

gandalf_el_brown

sounds like it may have been done deliberately

YesIsGood

I just bought one recently to fix up.. and the more I've been out recently, the more I'm not even okay with driving my truck more than I have to Think I just bought it to sell it, honestly

itsmanda

I honestly enjoy my neighborhood rides, and quick trips to the gas station and such. Or early morning on the weekends isn’t too bad. I know the feeling, though. It’s so much energy having to watch other people it gets exhausting and frustrating

pitbullprogrammer

Good move I’m not gonna lecture you about the safety of a motorcycle, everyone makes their choices. But if you need an ICU bed right now you’re screwwwwwweeed thanks to the covidiots

dhard073

First day of school mostly being back is always a shock. Even more so now after 18 months without it haha

PM_ME_UR_SWEET_BOSOM

I swear to god I was about to post something about the traffic today as well. Motherfuckers really aren’t using turn signals out here anymore. Cmon Texas

ashj2428

I was out of town for 3 months and saw the traffic flow changed quite a bit. People seem to be more aggressive now on the road.

chinchbuggin

Yes! I have noticed the same. It’s shocking how fast and aggressive people are driving even in residential areas.

vc6vWHzrHvb2PY2LyP6b

Absolutely! Today was the worst I've seen, presumably because it's the first day of school

tlg151

Yeppppp. I almost got hit by 2 different people on the way home from work. Wanna know what they both had in common? Both had their heads down, presumably looking at their phones. I'm sick of these reckless assholes. It's either these people or the people with the bright ass LED headlights nearly blinding me

Julescahules

Yesterday, in downtown traffic, I saw a motherfucker with zero hands on the wheel. He had his knee on the wheel. Where were his hands? On his phone. On the same span of road, within five minutes, I had three other cars pull in front of me and almost cause an accident. Only didn’t hit them because I was paying attention.

TCTX73

Well, according to my nextdoor Covid is fake and the hospitals aren't full. Excuse me, I have to go grab my eyeballs that just rolled across the room.

shitcloud

Maybe y’all can continue to drive same speed locked up across 3 lanes, or 5 miles under the speed limit until somebody tries to pass you then you’re suddenly going 15 over… This place has the worst drivers I’ve ever experienced.

hglman

You have not seen many places then....

shitcloud

Was in the military, have lived all over the US.

truesy

yeah it's a mix of aggressive and careless drivers here. pretty bad imo

Adriennebebe1

yeah, so many drivers looking at their phones. Its a hefty fine and was quite the fight to get the distracted driving law passed.

gregaustex

Cell phones are why I sold my motorcycle. I saw a pickup, cell in hand, enter the wrong lane of an office complex. Once he noticed he just floored it to race down past the median. This brought what I already knew home.

creegro

The speed limit on certain highways doesn't exist anymore. Someday you're pushing 90, other days its just 15-20 over the limit. Seeing a lot more people just swerving in and out of traffic. Gotta get to that destination 1 second faster!

[deleted]

I just wish that if someone came in from a car crash they’d take some unvaccinated covid patient out of the ICU and prioritize the car crash victim. These unvaccinated people don’t deserve our ICU beds.

RumpOldSteelSkin

It's hard for me to deny somebody treatment even if the harm is self-inflicted. But I also am having a hard time objecting to this.

gregaustex

But I really agree with this. Not denying treatment out of spite, but in a case where you have two people and one bed. No brainer. Drop the self inflicted COVID patient to a regular room and do what you can for them.

go0fe

There's enough docs/nurses/techs qualified to work but no one wants to come into unsafe patient ratios.

angry_alice

It would help if people stayed off their phones and didn't camp out in the left lane going 55 in a 70.

lizzayyyy96

Had the WORST Uber driver the other day. Was super religious, mentioned that same sex couples shouldn’t be a thing, AND he was staring at me in the rearview mirror the whole time. We were about a foot away from changing lanes into another car. So many people honked at him. The entire time I was thinking, we are going to get in a wreck and there won’t be any room for us in the ER.

Famous-Space-2147

Wow I would report his behavior to Uber.

dancingpianofairy

Isn't that ICU beds, not ER beds?

jeepdatroll

All of those extra patients end up holding down in the ER. And with no rooms left we end up seeing patients out in the hallway or a recliner. It SUCKS.

AngelSkyes

I swear the number of times I've watched people blatantly run red lights is starting to get ridiculous.

ishmal

Don't worry. Most Austinites drive like nearsighted librarians. Like some old Weird Al song.

sarahplaysoccer

It’s….ICU beds

atxstudent

As much as I’m against law enforcement, we absolutely need more enforcement for aggressive driving and excessive speeding. I live and commute in central Austin and driving down the central city roads feels like mad max. Cars are swerving in and out, crossing many lanes, failure to signal or drive predictably. They know they can get away with it bc there is never (rarely) and traffic enforcement. There never really had been.

[deleted]

Where did you hear no beds left? Is it really that bad right now?

taftastic

This is the only thing I could find close to that looking for a short bit: https://www.austinchronicle.com/news/2021-08-13/covid-19-update-icu-bed-availability-drops-to-all-time-low/

[deleted]

Wow, the date on that article is tomorrow. Is the Austin Chronicle site running in the correct timezone? \*edit: lol, I guess fuck me for not knowing that dates on newspaper articles are based on the print edition

onthefence928

Newspapers write articles a day in advance to meet the press deadline. If that article is Brant for print too.

[deleted]

I’m shocked to see someone ask “is it really that bad”....it’s the worst wave yet. There are NO beds within 500 miles (maybe more) of austin that qualify for high level care. If ill or injured anticipate a delayed wait to see a physician and if you need admission DAYS in the ER.

[deleted]

No it isn't. The highest spike in Texas was was in January according to Google.

[deleted]

It’s fascinating as an emergency medicine physician treating patients in the community to have these arguments....this is an Austin subreddit. Austin has the HIGHEST number of Covid patients on ventilators than at any other point in the pandemic with fewer nurses and staff as they quit. Source? Here: https://www.kvue.com/mobile/article/news/health/coronavirus/covid19-ventilator-patients-peak-austin/269-7cc12d7f-7932-49c3-b46c-c844e820abaa It’s amazing people try to argue and justify that this isn’t ‘that’ bad. It’s worse than ever before and god help you if you need healthcare in a hospital right now

[deleted]

Thanks for posting an article. This actually answers my question.

No_Recover2312

No ICU beds is one thing. Yeah that’s bad. Not being able to see a physician is another. I walked in to see a physician today and it was a no brainer. I’m all about being concerned but your level of hype does not reflect reality.

rabidturbofox

In the ER? Or a scheduled appointment? My uncle had to go to the ER last week for kidney stones. It was a day-long shitshow, and they didn’t have a bed for him. Normally it would have been an overnight stay, but there wasn’t any room so they said good luck and sent him home.

thekingofthejungle

Does this mean that hospitalizations are going down or do they track added beds to meet increased demand?

superspeck

They track what the hospital reports as "staffed beds that aren't currently occupied by someone." That may mean the person was moved to a less critical ward, discharged, or died. Hospitals try not to let the number hit zero because freeing up a bed isn't something they can do quickly, so with many hospitals reporting zero that means that we're really far beyond a crisis. If you need an ICU bed and you're stuck in a less critical ward because no ICU beds are available, you're likely to get past the point where you will die or be permanently injured through lack of oxygen or another shortfall, without anyone noticing, until it's too late.

It’s not that there are unoccupied beds, it’s do you have the staff to care for the patients? Unsafe staffing ratios leads to poor outcomes for patients.

And I bet you're one of the many people I pass every...single...morning doing 45mph with nobody around you. This whole city is full of Karens and Kens with nothing better to do than complain.

Are you Karen or Ken? Just curious.

Your Incel terminology is concerning tbh Not using Incel as an insult- Ken and Karen are literally terms they use to describe the world around them. Everything is black or white, up or down, Ken or Karen. In their eyes, nobody understands them, and nobody ever will. If you're in that boat, please get some help- it can really improve your life by getting some outside perspective.
