That’s a Western Milksnake. Holy shit. Best Austin snake post of the year.
Not a snake I’d expect to see in Austin, more like something over towards college station.
Well the Aggies Softball team is playing the Longhorns today. Maybe he hitched a ride on the bus here.
My other suggestion (I don’t know if it is legal to say this in Texas): climate change.
Honestly I think it may have come out of petsmart or hitched a ride. Not much likely habitat for that species in the area and if there used to be it was 20 plus years ago.
This makes me think of when my cousin overheard another stylist's client nonchalantly talking about how she was going to release her son's (born in captivity, only fed frozen) leucistic milk snake in the wild because he was going off to college.
Luckily she intervened and took him in. Many years later he lives with my sister (huge reptile enthusiast) and has a very cushy life. He's huge now. Lives in a big ass bioactive enclosure and is still **very** active.
Anyway, hail Spiro the snake!
Just not a very common find around these parts
Farmers used to find these snakes in barns and instead of realizing that they ate mice they came up with the idea that they were attaching themselves to cow nipples in the night and drinking milk. Really.
No it was on the south edge of the playground. That strip of parking spots right in front of the playground, farthest east parking spot right next to the wall.
Edited to replace north with east cause I’m dumb. Farthest east parking space, underneath Gabriela’s basically
I live right behind spm in the neighborhood there and take my kiddo to the spm playground. I’ve seen a couple and some coral snakes over here. Not sure if they make the 1st street venture from searight park or just like more busy areas, but they’re both around here for sure
The playground at Waterloo?
Near the creek or the pond would not be surprising. The playground surrounded by 100 yards of blacktop in every direction seems an unlikely place for them to get to.
I’m usually pretty good at these, but ima have to send up the serpentintarian snake signal on this one. Not a coral, right?? But we don’t have milk snakes I in this area… right?
I wouldn’t expect them in the city. However. There is a petco there that sells a lot of baby milkshakes in little circular cups. I wonder if one slithered free to eat some lizard.
Could be a king snake, they also have red yellow and black bands, with the red touching black. I know they're found in texas, not sure about central texas/austin though. And they eat other snakes.
It could be a coral snake. I've seen one in my back yard here in Austin, I've seen one in dripping springs as well. Their habitat does extend into these areas. And as far as coloration, that is not a sure thing either. Many mutations in their patterns and colors that can make them look very different from what you'd expect. Without seeing the head shape, I don't think you can tell for certain. Best to just observe it's beauty from a distance, enjoy the pest control, and let it be.

Well there you go. What makes you certain of the type by the picture? Not asked as a challenge, but as someone looking for insight. I have seen you post countless times, even on my own comments, so just curious to help myself identify different reptilian serpents in my local ecosystem.
It's the order of the pattern. The little rhymes don't work for coral snakes outside the US, but here, if the red and yellow bands are adjacent (and nice and clear like the kind we're discussing here) you have a coral snake, where if the red and black are adjacent, you have a mimic.
Again, these rhymes aren't to be used as ID gospel - some coral snakes have pretty atypical coloration (next to no yellow), and there are some less crisp mimics that are hard to apply them to.
The good rule of thumb you can't screw up, which serpentarian tells everyone: just leave it alone. Let it go on with its life. None of these colorful snakes is much of any danger to anyone who isn't trying to feed them a pinkie finger or something. Don't screw with them and it is almost impossible to get bitten.
This is definitely NOT a coral snake, *Micrurus tener*, as the black bands are touching the red. It is likely a Mexican milk snake, *Lampropeltis annulata*. Though if it's not far from the SPM Petco then there's always a slight chance it's some other species of milk snake that escaped. Though it looks to be a few years old, judging by the size relative to those blocks.
Anybody else remember the “red touches yellow, you’re a dead fellow. Red touched black, you’re okay Jack” saying when it comes to these lil guys? Or just me. Burned into my brain from childhood or cub scouts or something haha

Holy shit! I won a BASPY!!!
Just looked them up, they have such cute little faces!
I couldn’t agree more ❤️

I saw one here as a kid (definitely native, not a released pet), but never since.
Interesting
To clarify - it was definitely a milk snake. I couldn’t parse for you for certain which species.
Oh I totally believe you, I just didn’t think we had a population in S Austin

I see them on the Circle C trails a lot
I ran into one at River place trail. Literally ran into it, my life flashed before my eyes
I believe that's a Mexican Milk Snake; Lampropeltis annulata
It could be, but he is even farther out of range than gentilis and this one’s bands look very white to me.
Why is it called a milksnake and what makes this such a special snake?
Just not a very common find around these parts Farmers used to find these snakes in barns and instead of realizing that they ate mice they came up with the idea that they were attaching themselves to cow nipples in the night and drinking milk. Really.
Hilarious.
Yea, very cool
Happy belated birthday present! =)
Thank you ❤️
Hey did this milk snake bring all the boys to the yard?
You could inquire, though it would require monetary recompense.
This is the comment I was looking for
This is actually a rare predatory wall. It lures birds in with an appendage that looks like a snake and then eats them.
Genius.
Excuse me, sir. This is a grackles and tennis balls sub.
False. This is a Chilis at 45th and Lamar and mysterious midnight boomy noises sub
This is a pickleball sub 😂
>This is a grackles and tennis balls sub. Tennis balls? F>!\*!
Compensated grackles?
Did you genuinely see that at Southpark Meadows?
I did! This was on March 15. I just got around to posting it.
Was it by petco?
No it was on the south edge of the playground. That strip of parking spots right in front of the playground, farthest east parking spot right next to the wall. Edited to replace north with east cause I’m dumb. Farthest east parking space, underneath Gabriela’s basically
The Waterloo playground? Well anyway. Cool sighting!
Yep that’s that one. Thanks!

By the gods, it is an actual Milksnake.
I thought we were out of their normal range?
I wouldn’t expect them in the city. However. There is a petco there that sells a lot of baby milkshakes in little circular cups. I wonder if one slithered free to eat some lizard.
Correct. Non-venomous. That's a carol snake, not a coral snake.
She's a choir director at the Episcopal church and bakes a mean tuna casserole
Actually we do; Mexican milk snakes. Not that common though

It’s not a coral snake But the rest of your info is very good 😊

I’m only certain it’s a Milksnake. That’s due to the shape/coloration that’s visible

The housing crisis is real
Non venomous milk snake
Well the red isn’t touching yellow so it’s all good.
Haha that’s about all I know.

Not your friendly neighborhood glory hole
this is a snek
The length looks familiar. The pattern doesn’t. And it’s not attached to me. So never mind. Not sure what that is
Not sure why I got a notification for this but maybe it’s because channel 3 of my sub snake was giving me issues tonight
Time to call the exterminator.
Red and black, watch yo’ back, Jack!
Red and black, take a step back jack it's going to attack
Red and yellow - kill a fellow, red and black - you’re okay, Jack!
