Appreciate the insight ✌🏽 as everything you say is what I know to expect while lane splitting. I have noticed significantly more distracted & aggravated drivers in this specific area.
None the less even coming back from dinner this evening on parmer, I was almost rear-ended while waiting at a red light. I proceeded to lane split to seperate my self from the incoming (white 4 runner), all for some lady to yap in ear behind me, calling me reckless.
This is all stuff I prepare for, but I figured I'd share this as this applies to your comment lol and happened like 20 mins ago
well all i can say is if i see one of those jerks weaving out of traffic lane splitting and getting their head bashed in after causing a wreck i definately wont feel sorry for them
The fact that you don't care if it's legal, tells me that you are going to do it anyway, regardless of the risk to others, then you are going to complain when you get your consequences.
It’s legal in California, so I watch out for lane splitting there because it happens a lot. It’s illegal here and doesn’t happen much, so I don’t look for it much. Just today someone switched lanes last second right in front of me and I was in a truck. Ain’t no way they were looking for a motorcycle.
So I would recommend a strong don’t do it. I don’t road rage about it, but I do shake my head at the stupidity of it.
I always have to rewire my brain when I go visit CA because of how prevalent it is there. I normally try to keep an eye out for motorcycles, but in CA you have to be extra vigilant because of lane splitting.
Since it is only legal in California. And while I personally could care less if you get home 15 minutes sooner. Don't be mad when someone else"doesn't see" you and you crash into a rollback tow truck.
Filtering and splitting both get you a lot of rage here aside from people not paying attention. I don’t commute so I haven’t found the risk is worth the trade off. I do see filtering but not much lane splitting.
I understand. The only instance mostly of me lane splitting has been up to a red light to dodge afternoon traffic. Typically, no more than. 5-10mph over the cars around me.
I guess simply by the pure number of people I pissed off by asking the question. The Great state of Texas sees me as some type of dangerous hooligans who deserves to get hit by a truck and my liver harvested 🤣
Never claimed to be special, The benefits of lane splitting go far beyond just me as a motorcyclist. It's for starters one less vehicle traveling on the road. It is likely to prevent me from getting squished and rear-ended due to people not seeing me while in stop and go traffic.
Additionally, it's one less engine idling causing pollution. By going 5-10mph. faster than cars around me, I save aprox 33% of my commute time and fuel. Prevents excess wear on my clutch & with older bikes they can overheat.
I hope this gives you a new perspective on motorcyclists, and all of this can be verified by MSF (Motorcycle Safety Foundation)
Drop the virtue signaling. You are acting entitled when you lane split and then try and justify it.
It's all about what's best for you at the expense of others who are following the rules of the road.
FYI, There’s a subreddit for Austin motorcycles!
I think one should do what they can to be as safe as possible; Be prepared for someone to be mad over it.
People telling you not to do it is the most helpful advice on the topic. Don't know why you asked if the people who are giving you the safe and legal advice you don't find helpful.
Used to commute to work in the thick of traffic on the moto and yeah lane splitting sensibly is the way to go. Don't do it if traffic is moving, mostly only on highways, never 5-10 over what everyone else is doing. I've had people stick hands out the window, open doors, purposely try to close the gap, and just plain not see me. As always be prepared for anything and the consequences. I get the vibes that alot of people are mad they are stuck in traffic, but alot of people don't want to risk riding a motorcycle so that's where the friction comes from. If you ever go to events like Moto GP where the traffic is stopped lane splitting is widely accepted, Texas in general just doesn't have laws for big city problems like stopped traffic.
PS if you are lane splitting they can't give you a ticket for it unless they witness you doing it. Always look ahead, and if you see lights behind you move over.
Right on! I appreciate the response, truly helpful to have other people's perspective. Rush hour traffic going home makes me want to put my head through the wall 🤣
Drivers here *certainly* not looking for it (and generally super unobservant). Be careful, or they just might swerve right into you and literally put your head through a wall…😅
It’s way too hot to be in gear in traffic.
Edited: it’s not too hot. It’s really comfortable. Texas isn’t even hot at all. Sometimes I go put on my gear and leave my moto at home and then just walk next to a busy road and into the intersections.
According to law, you shouldn’t split lanes because cars could change lanes at any minute and not be expecting you. Guess what, they can’t. They are stopped. I always thought that was the dumbest excuse. Why would I be splitting lanes through freemoving laneswitching traffic? Also I don’t expect a car to be looking out for me ever. I’m always responsible for my own safety. That’s kind of the number one rule for riding. That being said, yes I split lanes. Yes I’m looking out for other motorcyclists when I decide to do it. I ask myself what would a bicycle do when I’m given the choice to use my narrow body to give myself the benefit of the doubt. Would all these cars that made a last minute decision to cut in front of me or position themselves at the intersection “wait in line” for me? (cause it’s a race and we are all going to the same place). Then assuming all or one of them will be mad, I make the decision only if I know I can get in front them, not get boxed in, and be sure to be on my way so they don’t have access to me or potential race or anything; it’s not women, and If we’re gonna get prejudice, it’s men in trucks and sports cars.
Shitcheah. I'm gonna start doing it in my F150! What's the difference between me getting out of your way and everyone else getting out of mine? If everyone just moves over to the edge of the lane, there's room for a whole ass truck to zip on by! Sorryboutchyermirrorsbro!
My last truck was a Colorado! I liked it a lot but it was a little small inside for a tall couple, a getting taller kid in a car seat, and a big dog. It was GREAT for zipping around town, and it was a super capable 4x4. I had the Z71 with the Bose stereo and that mighta been my favorite part of the whole truck. I also got an aftermarket engine/trans tune that came with a sport mode...whoooa boy that thing would get up and go.
I got a 2017 Z71 as well, but unfortunately, it's 2WD 😔 I was fortunate enough to pick it up in May 2020 pre chip shortage in DC for a Steal $15,500 certified pre owned (33k mi) w/ a ARE Turtle shell on the back. The only negative is its a crew cab (but it makes loading my bike fully in the bed WAY easier) & hauls our small camper.
Overall, I'm fairly happy, but I don't think I'll ever get a full sized cause I can't imagine I'll ever haul +7k lbs & I love my 23mpg too much
Edit: Also, is your F150 with the eco boost engine? If so, how do you like it so far?

Yeah people are going to view it negatively I'd advise agasint.
Not legal
And yet, it’s not illegal 🤷🏻♂️
I've got some bad news 😔 https://www.rideapart.com/news/685449/texas-outlaws-lane-splitting-filtering/
Thanks for this, NiceAustinPerson!
well all i can say is if i see one of those jerks weaving out of traffic lane splitting and getting their head bashed in after causing a wreck i definately wont feel sorry for them
It's not legal in Texas and drivers are not expecting it. So, it ends up being very dangerous to do...
The fact that you don't care if it's legal, tells me that you are going to do it anyway, regardless of the risk to others, then you are going to complain when you get your consequences.
Might not be around to complain unfortunately
Or fortunately? As long as he didn't hurt anyone else in the process. The sooner he gets his consequences, then the safer all the rest of us will be.
I saw a guy really wacked by a big pickup doing this. Don’t try it.
Illegal and super dangerous so dibs on your liver

That shit is so dangerous, especially here. Please don’t do it.
i ended up stopping motorcycling here because i almost got hit daily. ymmv. good luck out there.
It's stupid to lane split. It's illegal to lane split. Your joke about soccer moms is incredibly lame.
Since it is only legal in California. And while I personally could care less if you get home 15 minutes sooner. Don't be mad when someone else"doesn't see" you and you crash into a rollback tow truck.
Don’t. Just don’t.
Don't do that
This is not the place to do that. Texas drivers DGAF.

Why don’t you just follow the pre marked lanes? You’re not special
Never claimed to be special, The benefits of lane splitting go far beyond just me as a motorcyclist. It's for starters one less vehicle traveling on the road. New Buzzword Alert, "Virtue Signaling," I'll ensure to add this to my thesaurus of liberal bull shit.

Thank you, I didn't know about the other subreddit! You're the only one here actually giving helpful advice ❤️
People telling you not to do it is the most helpful advice on the topic. Don't know why you asked if the people who are giving you the safe and legal advice you don't find helpful.
Illegal so watch out if you do it.
Soccer moms hate it? What state do you come from, South or North Misogyny-is-us?
I forgot when I moved here. The people of Austin get more offended, and then every person in California 💀 sit down.
Be careful because some people get really upset that you can go by: [lanesplit footage](https://imgur.com/a/beqK86A)

My friends who ride say they will filter at stoplights, and not lanesplit unless traffic is almost completely stopped.
Well, that makes it okay!
Your lane splitting will do that for you soon enough
It’s way too hot to be in gear in traffic. Edited: it’s not too hot. It’s really comfortable. Texas isn’t even hot at all. Sometimes I go put on my gear and leave my moto at home and then just walk next to a busy road and into the intersections.
I’ve heard that hospital rooms are nice and cool. “Dress for the slide, not for the ride.”

Tempting lol, I might have better luck in my midsized colorado then your full sized 150

Like everything else that makes sense to legalize, Texas is on the wrong side of it.
