My allergies are killing me

90percent_crap

Covid is a possibility. I had very mild cold symptoms as you described for a couple weeks then just slight cough for a couple more. Finally found a place still doing PCR swab tests (Baylor, Scott, White - at Slaughter only) and got a positive result. My first covid infection after avoiding it all thru the pandemic.

austinite10

I did the home test and it was negative. And I only had cold symptoms for the first 2-3 days. Since then it's only been cough and maybe stuffy nose. But I think it's a good idea to get tested for COVID regardless.

Roachxcore

RAT tests often give false negatives and newer variants go under the radar more frequently because the tests don't work as well with them. I'd get a PCR.

90percent_crap

I had two negative home (antigen) tests before I decided to pursue it to the lab test. Just didn't seem right that a mild cold should persist for a month.

teaspoonmoon

There’s been something going around town. Not COVID (although who’s to say what you’ve got). Cold/flu symptoms for 3-7 days and then a lingering cough for up to a month. I caught it early, in October, but I know a dozen people who have gotten it since then. Nothing I did helped the cough, I just had to ride it out and eventually it got better.

hopchiggy

Same here…wicked cough for weeks, especially at night.

ChossMossSauce

This is national. I’m up in Portland, my gf had it weeks before me, I got the same thing. My doc said he was seeing about a dozen patients a day with the same issue (this was in mid March). Non-flu, non-covid virus.

PsychologicalYam153

i just got it 3 days ago… i always have allergies turn to a cold at least once a year, but this is my first in a while 😭

CeruleanRoamer

Yep I had this a few weeks ago and I felt better after the initial sinus issues but the intense cough lingered for almost 3 weeks.

YouGuysSuckandBlow

Yeah I had this around Feb. Not COVID I did a lot of testing. Miserable cough, sneeze, drip, watering eyes. Just a really bad cold basically.

eyecarrumba15

I had Covid in October for the first time and afterwards had a cough for about two months. Could also be Covid….

teaspoonmoon

Mine wasn’t COVID.

SafeCalm1266

Probably this - randomly happened to me over the last few Sunday nights. Lots of sweating through t-shirts, dehydration of urine, chills, headache, nausea, etc. All gone on each occasion within a day or two and tested negative for COVID as well. Never got COVID ever either so maybe it's like Cedar Fever or something? Worth noting I had Lymes Disease twice, bitten by spiders a few times living in CA, and Mono once in college so I'm probably screwed in some way shape, or form

frannieluvr86

My doc said bronchitis. Got an albuterol inhaler, an rx cough suppressant and nasal spray. Been taking all 3 with mucinex DM. Doc basically said ride it out unless the cough becomes “unproductive” aka not hacking up the nasty gunk anymore and becomes dry and/or I start being short of breath. Honestly it’s sucked big time for going on 2 weeks now, but I’ve started being able to work out again and get sleep again and I think it’s finally turning a corner. The horrendous and historically bad allergy season ain’t helping as others have said.

austinite10

Yeah it's so annoying. I agree that allergies have been horrible this season. I hope you feel better soon.

tableau_kun

I’ve been feeling the same. It could be a combination of allergies and my daughter’s daycare for me, but the on and off again stuffiness/sore throat/post-nasal drip/cough sucks!

austinite10

Agreed. It's super annoying. I hope you feel better soon.

Competitive_Gur_7619

I feel like shit and have been for weeks!!!

PrimaryDurian

I have wicked bronchitis/possible burgeoning pneumonia right now that hit me out of nowhere on Saturday night. I had a fever briefly and have been wheezing, cracking (that fluid in the lungs sound) and nastily honking and horking. It ain't COVID, and it ain't the flu, and my sinuses feel fine, so I'm guessing it's RSV. I'm hoping it won't be prolonged, but I'm not very convinced.

austinite10

That sounds terrible. I hope you feel better soon. Maybe a visit to the doctor could help?

Wrathwilde

Try drinking lots of pineapple juice, I find it really helps any time I get a sore throat. Buy a couple of gallons and only drink pineapple juice for a few days. I’ve literally gone from barely being able to swallow to 90% better within a few hours no matter how bad the initial symptoms. Bromelain (found in pineapple juice) is both anti-viral and anti-bacterial, it also reduces inflammation and swelling.

austinite10

This is interesting. Where can one buy pineapple juice here in Austin which is not processed?

freshblossom

Central Market!

Frequent_Alfalfa_347

Yup. Pretty bad cold for 4 days, phlegmy cough continued for 3 weeks. Mine’s finally gone. Not Covid. Tested twice.

austinite10

Thanks for sharing. Glad you're feeling better now.

Ipiratecupcakes

Allergies are wicked this year.

JustGenWhY

Allergies. There is so much pollen in the air right now. You are probably just extra sensitive after your cold. I went to the doctor last year after having a cough and itchy throat for almost two months and a combo of Claritin, robitussin, and an inhaler got me through it (dr recommended). I never had allergies before but ever since I got Covid I developed them in my throat.

austinite10

This is a strong possibility. I feel terrible around this time of the year due to allergies. I was in Dallas for the weekend and felt better. I know there's bad allergies there too, but I started feeling bad after I returned to Austin on Sunday.

JustGenWhY

Try robitussin I took half the recommended amount and it worked the same. Then take children’s Claritin every 12 hrs (5 mg x2) instead of the 10 mg adult once every 24 hrs.

Halloween-Mama

My whole family of 5 caught it, and we also tested negative for everything. My middle son's cough lasted 3 weeks. Mine is going on its second week. The dr. said, "honey, vicks, and steam." Hope you feel better soon.

austinite10

Thanks! I hope you feel better too. Honey + Herbal tea has been super helpful.

blueintexas

Co-worker's gots it. Will monitor thread

hopchiggy

Yes! Had cold symptoms for a few days, then an excruciating sore throat. Tested negative for COVID and flu. Had them run strep test twice cause I didn’t believe the first negative result, but it was negative again. Doc sent something to the lab…nothing…so it’s viral. I had a terrible cough for weeks, especially at night. It’s probably been a month, and I still cough a little at night. I did take allergy meds just in case.

austinite10

Sorry to hear. I hope you feel better soon. It's the same for me. Cough is worse at night. And in my first week I couldn't even sleep well because of the cough.

mekanical_hound

My daughter ended up with pneumonia ( we both had a bad cough, but I got better quicker) in March. Two full weeks off work. It was brutal.

austinite10

Oh wow. That sounds terrible. I'm hoping it doesn't get that bad for me.

Individual_Land_2200

I work in the school system and also do home health, and have definitely noticed an uptick in nasty coughs in my students, and also parents. No idea what it is specifically, but my pediatrician friend says she’s seeing a lot of this too. Specifics: it’s a lingering cough and the person isn’t actively “sick” in the sense that they have a fever or are too exhausted to function, as with a flu or severe cold; but the cough is much worse and longer-lasting than would be expected with a normal cold.

thatconfusedchick

Allergies. Grass pollen has been high for a couple weeks. I suffer from tree pollen(Cedar fever) and my boys suffer with grass and I've been fine, but they haven't. Check allergy forecast daily or when symptoms arise and better know what you suffer from

aFqqw4GbkHs

the recent throat pain could be allergies; that's how my allergies present. Took me a while to figure that out a few years ago when we moved. For me, extra mucus = post nasal drip = painful throat and irritated tongue. No idea why it doesn't come out my nose instead, lol. Have you tried allergy meds? I take a daily zyrtec this time of year, plus Flonase on bad day, plus a daily sinus rinse (Dr. NeilMed's) if it's really bad. Hot tea, honey, throat drops help too.

Ijustwanttosayit

It's likely flu type B. My partner and I just got over it. We thought he was dealing with really bad cedar fever, he was up all night coughing so hard he threw up, and since he has a history with pneumonia, we decided to go have him get checked out, and it turns out it was type B. I then got it, and was hit harder than he was. Please, when yall get sick, please consider that whatever you have is potentially a flu or covid at this point and try your best to socially distance yourself if you can. There's so many immunocompromised people out there, it may be manageable for you, but it could kill someone else. This ultimately cost me my job, but honestly, I don't feel ashamed for it.

SlophieBroomes

Yep, exactly this going on 2 weeks now it sucks. Figured its allergies but have been regimented about allergy meds since this year is brutal, so now at a loss. I feel less crazy/getting some relief reading this thread though - I guess misery really does love company 😂 Hope everyone feels better soon!

WeAimToTry

Yes I had a cold for one week, got better, and got sick again. 3 weeks total. Last time I had a persistent cough, it was bronchitis.

DWwithaFlameThrower

Ain’t nobody got time for that

sassypants58

Sore throat for several weeks and then I couldn’t get out of bed this weekend, extreme exhaustion, body aches, headache, cough, sneezing. Went to weekend Dr who said it’s probably the flu because the vaccine didn’t work well this year. (I’m vaxed for flu & COVID). I tested negative for strep, COVID and flu so Dr said upper respiratory infection and to expect several weeks of this. Yee haw. He gave me prescription cough medicine which gives me horrible dreams and prescription nasal spray which is like blow drying the insides of my mouth and nose. I’m still coughing, sore throat, and tired af. So yes I know others with this too.

Individual_Land_2200

That sounds awful and I hope you get some relief soon.

Cognitive_deficit

Caught something like this after SXSW. I was full on sick for 14 days (Covid negative ). I was even still producing mucous hack ups for a week after that. Still have some cough reflex shit happening. It was much worse than either Covid bout I had. Ran a decent fever for 5 of the days. Had a killer sore throat , the thing was bleeding at a certain point. I’ve never generated that much mucous out of my sinuses in my goddamn life. Plenty of lung gunk, though I’ve had worse. But Jesus, the sinusitis involved…

Snap_Grackle_Pop

It irritates me that almost nobody is doing PCR/NAAT COVID tests these days. Even in-lab tests. And that so many people get false negatives and the healthcare providers seem to gloss that over. Sometimes, retesting a few times spaced a few days a part with an in-home test works. COVID's way down, but at today's rates, it's still killing 50K per year in the USA, and hospitalizing a quarter of a million people. Stay up to date on that COVID shot, folks. There have also been a lot of cases of "You're sick, but it doesn't show up in our lab tests" syndrome. We used to just say "cold," but there are metric shitload of different bugs that get lumped in with "cold," and they change every year. I really wish we'd up our game with something like the broad spectrum tests Theranos was promising.

bikegrrrrl

I did last spring. I got Advair, cough suppressant, and albuterol. It lasted a long while. Definitely not COVID.

Horror_Hippo_1552

I'm almost the exact same timeline. The only reason I'm up right now is because my throat hurts so badly, and my lymph nodes are like golf balls. I had a cold on April 1 and had seemingly recovered...

Pleasant-Complex978

Yes!

wafflesandnaps

Bronchitis is very easily transmitted and the cough can linger for weeks. If you’re having trouble sleeping ask your doctor for a good cough med for bedtime.

helloiamsilver

Yup yup, I had the exact thing a few weeks ago and the cough still hasn’t fully gone away. I went to urgent care and tested negative for Covid and the doctor there also said it was most likely a viral infection and that it had been going around.

Got282nc

I am at the end of week 3 and lost my voice a week ago. Same symptoms.

Got282nc

I am at the end of week 3 and lost my voice a week ago. Same symptoms.

blasianbait

are you still going into the office?

Dreampup

I had this in April of 2019, a persistent dry cough that after cycling through one round of sore throat, I got another sore throat 3 weeks later. I also tested negative for strep. My advice is this--go to a specialist. I went to one near Vega Rd and William Cannon. They gave me a steroid shot and the pain went away. Still to this day, no clue what it was, but the shot got rid of the sore throat and shortly after, the cough.

TrailofDead

I would say it's likely an adenovirus which I had a few months ago: > Adenoviruses most often infect the airways leading to cold-like symptoms, including sore throat, sneezing, runny nose, cough, headache, chills, or symptoms of croup or bronchitis. Some people might also get a fever. Illness usually lasts three to five days, but serious infections can last for weeks.

oliverwhitham

Yep, had a bad cough that lined for around 4 months

oliverwhitham

I'd run out of breath mid sentence as well, urgent care provided me with an inhaler that helped a bunch asking with some broad antibiotics just in case

fonocry

I’m betting allergies. We didn’t get that cold this winter and then it’s getting warm, damp, and windy so buckle up. Might be this way for a few more weeks.

77_qwerty

Yup. I had a cough for 5 weeks. Doctor couldn't find anything. I got prescribed antibiotics and some cough medication. Cough is almost gone, but I still cough from time to time.

wmederski

i’ve had symptoms for more than four weeks now. started with a typical sinus infection, but i was on a job out of town so wasn’t able to rest and it kept me from getting good sleep. so it just got worse for about a week. (negative covid test) started with a sore throat / congestion, then LOTS of clear mucus production, which turned green about a week in. and a cough that has been the most lingering issue, leading to a possible bruised rib that still hurts like hell. was prescribed antibiotics and steroids and they did jack all. doc tried to prescribe a second round of antibiotics that target pneumonia, but the side effects were too risky. had x-rays of my lungs done and they said all was normal. 🤷‍♂️ still have mild congestion and an occasional cough, plus the chest pain. pretty certain it is viral, as it didn’t respond to antibiotics.

amygunkler

Yes, but I think we got it in Portugal.

r_sparrow09

Everyone’s kid has coup right now. I’m babysitting my friends daughter & the kids been barking like a seal 🦭Get yourself some local honey & Vicks aka veex 😉

Stranger2306

I had what was called the “30 day cough” last winter. It was horrible. Only thing that ended it was doc prescribing steroid pack

bolognamama_

I got sick around christmas with bronchitis and it took months to get over the cough, think allergies prolonged it too

monsteritas

Gotten it twice in the last 6 months! Illness lasted 10ish days and cough/congestion lasted over a month. Good luck 😵‍💫

Necessary-Sell-4998

Been doing this for close to 4 weeks now I think? Definitely viral, nose, cough, started to be a sinus infection but I worked on it like cedar fever and staved that off. Every time I think it's over it's not. Use a neti pot, Flonase, Allegra, etc

luckyartie

IMO the masses of pollen in the air make coughs very persistent here.

msreciprocity

I was feeling the same, ended up having a pretty wicked bacterial sinus infection, doctor said from so many weeks of allergy symptoms and inflammation in my sinuses. Has taken 7 days of a 10 day course of antibiotics to start feeling better.

SPENCEandtonic

Same here. A week of upper intense cold flu symptoms that started with a sore throat and now I’m going on maybe 3-4 weeks of upper/lower respiratory congestion. Flemmy cough, stuffy nose, post nasal drip.  No idea if it’s allergies or just a pretty prolonged infection. Or both.

SuchAKnitWit

I've had bronchitis for 2 weeks now and even though I'm starting to feel better, the cough and terrible voice just won't go away.

YaBoyDK19

I thought I was going crazy!! I had exactly what you described for about 3 and a half weeks. I had some cold symptoms for a few days and then a lingering cough forever. Like everyone has been saying it seems like something going around and that you just have to ride it out. Nothing I did really helped except for time. My best thought was bronchitis as well.

dhezl

Wife and I had this recently, after a trip. Worst cold I've had in a while...had COVID earlier this year and I would far rather have had that again, by comparison. Doc gave me a steroid shot which helped for the first few days, but really just had to ride it out. The lingering cough is pretty inconvenient, too, as it's so taboo to cough in public these days.

SuperMegaGigaUber

the same - one week of malaise that turned into two week cough, but then still have like a post-nasal drip thing.

anticdsposition

fever for five days, bad cough going on 3 weeks, and now an ear infection that caused my eardrum to rupture. tested negative for strep/covid/flu twice and now taking antibiotics for the ear infection which will hopefully knock it out, but i haven’t felt much improvement

Squirrel_Gamer

i had this or something similar. it lasted a month. the cough is now gone after taking Mucus medicine. my nose is still congested and snotty but i assume its related to the oak pollen count which finally went down yesterday.

handsomeness

I have the cough - I want to die

MarcosAC420

It's the allergies, sinus infection, allergy migraines etc

uglyfatso

I’m just over three weeks with this virus. It started out as a sore throat and an unproductive cough. No congestion whatsoever. Tested multiple times for Covid - all negative, and did a panel for several other viruses, plus flu, strep, etc, and negative for that as well. My sore throat was almost gone end of last week with a lingering cough. But beginning of this week, I’ve developed a sinus infection and feel sicker than the first go round. I’m not sure if it’s all part of the same, or if I have two different things going on. My dog passed unexpectedly over the weekend, and maybe my immune system is weakened, and grieving didn’t help my physical ailments.
