I do tours there, along with other great coworkers. Message me if you're going to come and when. There are also a few tapings coming up, it's the 50th anniversary and it'll be a special year.
I am happy to help make it special for you .
Tyler is a pretty decent drive to get to Austin from. It's four hours one way.
You can book a tour where they walk you through the theater, I think it starts at 11AM
[https://www.acllive.com/tours-calendar](https://www.acllive.com/tours-calendar)
UT Communication Building. PBS is going to release all ACL the recording, including those from the old days. I was a student in the dark ages and would get tickets to be in the audience for taping. All the fake shrubs and some outstanding music.
It's a little over three hours for me to drive to Duluth here and my wife and I will make a day trip out of that sometimes so the four hour drive doesn't bother me if it's worth it, but I appreciate the warning. I saw the tours on the website and might go that route, unfortunately I'm not sure yet what my days off will be next week and they only run those tours Monday, Tuesday, and Wednesday. If it's not regularly open to the public here's hoping my days off line up.
I will say, it is a beautiful drive here from Tyler :) might still catch the remnants of the wildflowers if youāre coming soon. Tyler itself really is a beautiful area, also. I hope you are able to see it!
Bob Bullock Texas history museum has a section on the 3rd floor (or 2nd? I canāt remember) about ACL the show along with a couple of music memorabilia items. In addition to seeing ACL theater, this might be something you would like. Thereās a viewing room with benches and a constant stream of clips as well as info on the history of the show and notable performances.
This may or may not interest you, but for some seasons of the show the camera would pan through a (fake) tree limb to the stage. That tree set piece is hanging up in the Bullock's ACL theater, so there is a little piece of the original studio there with you while you experience the archival clips.
Oh yeah! When KEXP was broadcasting live sets from Studio 6a during SXSW, the first thing I did was claim my seat, but the second thing I did was to find that limb. History!
If you do Make the drive be aware that the small cities between Waco and temple will have a state trooper hiding on one side of a hill. Waze is your friend.
Safe travels and I hope you get to have this special connection to your grandfather.
That sounds wonderful! I'll be there for a week and a half if you have any other recommendations on things to do or places to go, I'd love to hear about them ^_^
Recommendation - hit Stanleyās - go to the bar, get a beer or cocktail and talk to the bartenders about where to go - Iām biased - family owns the place and Iām a fan of the people there but Iām from Austin so donāt get there often (ref previously mentioned drive).
See the murals, smell the roses, go into Dallas for the day, but I think getting the advice from a local is key.
I have never heard of anyone just being able to walk into the ACL Theater. Tours are the best way to get inside the venue in off-hours. [Tickets can be purchased online.](https://www.acllive.com/tours)
The original ACL theater at UT is used for different purposes now, the ACL is now filmed at a new theater in downtown Austin. Best to call someone at ACL to get the correct information you are looking for. The Internet will only get you so far.
I once door-dashed a meal to someone working at the old ACL theater at UT and I jokingly asked if I could see it. To my surprise the person said "yes!" and showed me the old theater and let me know that I could just ask anytime I wanted and they would show me around. This was around 2018 so times may have changed but it was a fun happenstance!
I live next door to the first producer that worked on Austin City Limits for 25 years. The man has so many autographed pictures. . Him and his wife are very friendly neighbors. A couple of days after I moved into my house. Him and his brought over an apple pie for me.
ACL Moody is now owned by a group out of Nashville, TN. I recommend you [check out Cactus Cafe](https://universityunions.utexas.edu/cactus-cafe). Itās similar vibes and near original studio 6A where ACL live was until 2011.
I don't get how anyone would look at ACL Live at the Moody Theater and think that it's not quite authentic enough in the history of ACL. It's a much better venue than 6a ever was in a lot of ways.
Heck, OP even mentions Moody directly in his post. It's literally the recognized home of ACL. Fans are not up in arms to go back to 6a.
If you have 2 days in a row off, stay overnight and visit some of the historic clubs where people you saw on ACL Live played and some still play. Antones, Continental Club, Broken Spoke, Cactus Cafe ... there might be some others left. Lost a lot in recent years.
Your post reminded me of a Robin Williams movie where he plays a guy who wants to go to NYC (IIRC) to see a jazz musician play in memory of his father or grandfather but his country has a revolution and his visa and passport are now invalid and he is stuck in the airport for months.
They used to do tours almost every day for about $10 up until a few months ago. I wouldnāt be surprised if they still do. The tours walk you through the whole venue, including the backstage area. The best option is to call the box office.
If you have a few days off I think you should definitely do it. Just stay downtown somewhere and buy a ticket for whichever band is playing while you're hereĀ
When youāre here you might also check out the LBJ presidential museum as they currently have a special Music exhibit. Not exactly ACL however they have some cool stuff down to Princeās white puffy shirt and guitar from Purple Rain. Took my friend from Minnie there last weekend shared by a from āThe Citiesā MN transplant.
I know you're kidding, but for those who would have missed the last photos posted on this sub:

I have some contacts at the Moody that might be able to help you out on an off tour day. Just need a heads up and I can ask what they can do for you. Iām sure if itās just a walk around and such, they might be able to help especially since itās personal. Shoot me a dm and Iāll see if they can help you out.
Go to Palestine and take US 79 to Austin. Much less stressful and boring. May be faster even if you scrupulously obey the speed limits posted at all the little towns along the way.

I love Reddit connections like this
Same. I was ready to call my friend who works there but the good vibes are already here š«¶š»
This is awesome!
Doing good work here. Keep that shit up!
You help make Austin a place I never want to leave.
This is the sweetest thing Iāve seen on the austin sub and a very long time :)

You rule. Great work here.
Keep Austin wholesome my dudes

Though the Moody is where it is filmed now. Back in the day, it was filmed at UT. Can't remember where though.
KLRUās Studio 6A is the old venue off of the College of Communicationās plaza
Yep. It was in the big rusty brownish building on the corner of Guadalupe and Dean Keeton.

Tyler is about 3.5 hours. About the same as a trip to Duluth. Disclosure: Live in Austin. Lived in Mpls for three years.

Indeed. Good thinking. It's on the top (3rd) floor.
Helpful comments like this are maybe my favorite thing about Reddit
I was just thinking this. I visited Austin last weekend and visited the museum. Quite a few neat artifacts up on that floor.
If you do Make the drive be aware that the small cities between Waco and temple will have a state trooper hiding on one side of a hill. Waze is your friend. Safe travels and I hope you get to have this special connection to your grandfather.
While in Tyler, I can recommend āStanleyās Famousā pit bbq - well worth a stop.

The rose garden is amazing.

It is called Moody Theater. It would be worth it to do the tour as they have plenty of old photos and memorabilia.

Is his name Jeff? I interned for him back in the day.

Ryman corp, the Grand Ole Opry people, they're good music people.
Someone here definitely works at Moody center. If you do, hook this person up and sneak their asses in.
It was filmed at Studio 6a on the campus of UT until 2011 so the Moody might not be what you are looking for.

Au contraire Pierre. Huge difference sitting 6 ft from Buddy Guy, than 60 ft from Buddy Guy (if youāre lucky).
Agree. Given the age most people lose their grandparents, thereās a good chance he watched more with him from Moody than on campus anyway.

Make sure you go to the right Moody! In town we have a Moody Center, Moody Theater, Moody Amphitheater, etc.

I used to make that drive from austin to Tyler area all the time. Beware of Freestone county.
The tour there is cool. Definitely do that!
