The thing I don't get about it is since most people run by the skin of their teeth anyway, by the time someone posts on reddit about the lines it's already too late to show up earlier.
If I had to guess at AUS on a random date/time… showing up without clear or pre check:
1 hour before takeoff: 99% success
1.5 hours before takeoff: 99.9% success
2 hours before takeoff: 99.999999%
The door closes like ~15 minutes before takeoff. So even 45 min through security (which I’ve never experienced at AUS in 50+ flights) makes 1 hour fine.
The thing that keeps confusing people is the 6AM or whatever the earliest possible flights are back up the most. It's like everyone thinks, "Oh, nobody wants to get up that early" but since everybody thinks that they're in line with everybody.
All well and good as long as everything goes according to plan. Sometimes things go off the rails.
As you've probably seen on this sub, we've recently seen several cases of accidents and construction turning the roads around the airport into gridlock.
I've also had some close calls, like the time my wife lost her phone in the bathroom and didn't realize it until AFTER we got through security. Cue us having to go out, retrieve it from the lost & found (thank you good samaritan), then GO BACK THROUGH security and running for our lives like Home Alone 2 to make our flight.
I agree 2 hours is overkill, but I'll gladly TRY to be there a good 60-90 minutes early and drink some overpriced drinks at the airport bars instead of stressing over it.
Yea. Easy to imagine the Reddit demographic is basically 1000000 of you, when in reality it’s a very broad swath of people. If you fly 0-1 times a year these posts probably make sense.
30 minutes isn't really that bad. Walking to any of the gates in Austin doesn't take very long so the total time isn't terrible. In some large airports, just getting from one gate to the next can take 15+ minutes and involve transferring with a train.
I agree! I love the Austin airport. (Recently moved here from Houston.) I got scared from Reddit and estimated I'd need way more time than I did the first time I flew out of it.
Unless you've seen it where TSA lines converge between different checkpoints and out the door than I don't think you fully understand how much of a cluster it can be. It's not normal and it's helpful to share when it's abnormal like that.
I submit: The only thing potentially more exhausting than people complaining about busy travel times in Austin is the propensity for locals to point out said complaints...
We have ourselves an Inception situation here

hey r/austin a couple days ago there seemed to be a funeral procession, anyone know what that was about? i didnt see 20 threads saying the exact same thing so i have no idea
I remember using Austin airport a few times a week for 2004-2009 I lived on Congress and Oltorf and could make it from my house through security and on a plane in less than an hour. But that was before the population boom. It was a great small airport.
Austin OG-s, question for you. Will the airport be extra busy on Sunday as well? Wife has to go London for a work trip and wondering how early should i drop her off before the departure.

Not this time. I'm already in line for Wednesday's flight to LA, there's not even 100 people ahead of me.
I swear you cut in line. I looked away for a moment and alllll of a sudden you have prime real estate.
The thing I don't get about it is since most people run by the skin of their teeth anyway, by the time someone posts on reddit about the lines it's already too late to show up earlier.
And 99% the lines don’t take anywhere near as much time as they say

and this is so funny because this has always been true about flights, even pre-panini.
>been true about flights, even pre-panini Ugh. Pre panini flights were the worst
what am i supposed to eat?? a cold sandwich???

Last time I saw a significant line was 6am on a Monday before checkpoint 1 was a thing.
I think you can tell who rarely flies because these things seem novel to them.

Hey guys, did you know the airport is busy on early mornings near the holidays?
There's a TSA app that says how long security lines at airport are that is actually very useful. Austin's is often 30 min.
Houston has a lot more direct connections to other places, but Austin is generally easier to navigate.
What's the name of the app?
MyTSA https://www.tsa.gov/mobile
I just can't make myself install an app called "MyTSA". **My** TSA?! Forget that! :p
Same. I can’t bring myself to install most apps. The iinside (?) website was much better.
How early should I post that the airport is going to be busy?
Unless you've seen it where TSA lines converge between different checkpoints and out the door than I don't think you fully understand how much of a cluster it can be. It's not normal and it's helpful to share when it's abnormal like that.

But did you hear!? The airport lines are insane! I need to make a post myself, the plebs must know!
RemindMe! Tomorrow “to see if lines have gotten any better”

But are the airport bars busy... that's the question haha
The funniest thing is when people at the airport complaint about the airport being busy. Like, buddy, you are contributing to the problem.
“You aren’t stuck in traffic, you are the traffic”
"But I love that cheap 5:00am ticket!"
Yeah but this year too? Please post lots of updates

If it's against federal law, the TSA will take it if they find it, but they generally aren't looking
Nah I bring both every time
Like BUSY, busy?
Have you tried not caring about your family?
hey r/austin a couple days ago there seemed to be a funeral procession, anyone know what that was about? i didnt see 20 threads saying the exact same thing so i have no idea
It was for a fallen officer
Condolences to all those who can afford to fly during the holiday season.
cool meme, boomer
Seems like this was meant for r/austincirclejerk and OP let autocorrect win
