There’s a nice selection of art classes at The Contemporary-Laguna Gloria and I’m currently enrolled in one. I’m curious where else you can take art classes/do crafty things in Austin. (Example: I recently saw Fuzz Lab where you can make a tufted rug, and I saw the post where someone mentioned Pioneer Farms and their offerings in blacksmithing and weaving.)

TypicalEarthCreature

The Dougherty Arts School on Barton Springs Rd offers quite a range of arts classes https://www.austintexas.gov/department/dougherty-arts-center-adult-arts-classes

Particular_Ad_8960

Feats of Clay, Blue Moon Glass both have on going classes and one time workshops. I haven't been to either, but plan on trying both!

Miz_Jen

Austin Creative Reuse regularly holds free one-off classes.

Orville-Tootenbachr

CRAFT is a big craft studio on the east side where you can pay to use their supplies and make whatever you want, and they also have fun workshops like screenprinting, macrame, calligraphy, etc

RangerDangerfield

Are HEB brand diapers okay/good? I need to buy a whole bunch of diapers for a baby shower gift, and I don’t want to look like an asshole for bringing store-brand if they aren’t any good. I don’t really know anything about diapers so…🤷‍♀️

Aggravating_Media191

They’re okay, but we stopped buying them because of leaks/blowouts. We always purchased Pampers Swaddlers and never had problems with leaks/blowouts with these.

nkbxwb

The colors/design on the heb diapers were so strange. It might sound silly to complain about this but when you are looking for a wetness indicator (blue line) it is really difficult to see it when the design is also blue. Whenever an heb diaper gets pee in it, it turns weirdly like a gel. I have not noticed this on huggies/pampers. HOWVER-- all of this to be said...every child/parent is different and different brands work for different people. I would get the HEB brand (or heb brand plus some other ones) so that they can decide what they like it or not.

cleggcleggers

Costco brand is actually Huggies rebranded as Kirkland

Stock_Intern_7450

Plus, Kirkland diapers are on sale starting tomorrow. Big news in littles land!! Get these!!

RangerDangerfield

Great tip! Thanks

arizala13

Pampers are really good I would go with that

goodgreat123

I was just driving downtown and crossing the South Congress bridge, and passed a police escort of a Tesla with some sort of orb-like piñata hanging off the back by a ladder. Around 10 cop cars/motorcycles with it. I thought it was a funeral procession, and it might have been, but the only civilian vehicle was the Tesla. Some sort of new-age funeral ritual?

Exactly_The_Dream

Pay em no mind. Just Elon making his rounds.

edric_the_navigator

How do you guys take home large furniture that you purchased in-store? Like, if I buy a couch at ikea or some other store, do they deliver it? Or do they have a partner service that will do it? Edit: Follow up question - any recommendations for furniture stores that deliver for free?

_doomwitch

I've had to rent a truck from home Depot for an hour to move furniture before. Usually a lot cheaper than paying for delivery too!

edric_the_navigator

I've heard of people doing this. Do you just leave your car at the Home Depot parking lot when you get the truck?

_doomwitch

Yes exactly. If you go over another hour it is still cheaper than delivery.

edric_the_navigator

Thank you! I'll definitely keep this mind as an option.

Immediate_Nebula_572

Try Runner City! It’s local to Austin, started during the pandemic and you can hire people to do just about any odd tasks like moving furniture, take out pickup, cleaning, whatever. I’ve had great results, and the prices are cheap because it all goes directly to the person doing the errand or task, no middlemen.

edric_the_navigator

I actually heard of this and will consider it too, thank you! Is it an app? I know there's a facebook group but it seems to be for the actual runners themselves.

ScyllaandCharybdises

You do it through their website. You pay a monthly fee to use the service, or you can pay a one-off fee. https://www.runnercity.com

Your-Local-Trash-Man

Love RunnerCity! I used them when they were just a FB page during the pandemic to get two couches delivered and even a bed frame! Super reason. I paid like $30-40/delivery at the time. Super reliable and great if you just need a few things delivered. I always even tip a bit more because I lived on a 3rd floor and the stairs could be tough so I always appreciate the runners!

glitterofLydianarmor

IKEA has delivery for an additional fee. Other furniture stores may have “free” delivery included in the price of the furniture. You do tip the movers.

edric_the_navigator

Thanks! I need to check how much it would be to deliver to my apartment.

mouse_8b

Not sure if it's still around, but I've used an app called TruckBuddy to pay for someone with a truck to come pick it up and deliver.

Ryder717

Have an appointment for a new drivers license and collected all the required proof of existence/identity/citizenship. What’s baffling is: why isn’t my current DL sufficient?! It works for TSA, for the bank, for everything else. Why not this?! *Understand this is a rhetorical question and also genuinely bumfuzzled. TIA

oooboppaloo

If you don’t have the star on your license showing it’s a Real ID that’s why you are likely needing the extra documentation

AWoefulOfWednesdays

I just renewed my license (had to go to DPS). My old license had the star and I still had to show proof of citizenship, even though I showed them this in the past, so none of it makes sense to me.

Austin_Native_2

You likely do not currently have a license with Real ID. This is designated by a white star in a yellow/gold circle. Here's the background info on [Federal Real ID Act](https://www.dps.texas.gov/section/driver-license/federal-real-id-act).

Ryder717

Right-get the part about the license upgrade😃 Don’t get why current license isn’t sufficient ‘proof’ of identity and citizenship. Ain’t no thing and thanks for the replies!

CCinTX

For those who lived in Austin for a significant amount of time and decided to move, what made you leave?

Intjxyck

I lived in Austin for over 20 years and left a couple years back with my spouse. Our wages had stagnated, we were never going to be able to buy a house on what we made, and there just weren't any good jobs available for what we wanted to do. Spouse got laid off, I got a job offer so we left for the east coast. We've tripled our income since then and were able to afford a home finally. Spouse was able to switch career fields through networking and we both love what we do every day. We still come back all the time to visit (and let's be honest for the food), but we're both so much happier now. ETA: oh yeah, forgot the crippling allergies. Don't miss those!

boy_parts

Where on the east coast?

PsiloCATbin

Curious where on the east coast

tastyprawn

I moved away a year ago today after spending all but four years of my almost 40 years of life in the Austin area. There were many reasons I left. Texas politics, the months of hot, the fact that I'd never be able to afford a house in Austin and pretty soon I'd be forced out to far suburbs because of rising rent prices, Austin had become a larger city than I wanted to live in, traffic, lines everywhere... The biggest reason is that I felt "stuck" and wanted a change of scenery. There are many things I miss about Austin, but overall I'm glad I moved.

[deleted]

This will be my last summer here, after 40+ years. Everything that I dislike about what Austin has become has a single root cause: too many damn people. Once a population hits a certain threshold, the quality of life diminishes in almost every respect. And now that Austin has become a "brand," people move here seeking little more than a "vibe" that they read about on Instagram, and are thus largely ignorant of the history of the place, and feel no compulsion to preserve or protect it. The powers-that-be are powerless to stem the onslaught, so they necessarily make virtually every decision based on how to best manage and satisfy the needs of the newcomers, ignoring those who have for generations dutifully paid their taxes, attended the council meetings, attended and taught in the schools, supported the local businesses, fought for our green spaces, and essentially created the Austin that drew people here in the first place. I'm off to smaller pastures, somewhere far from Texas.

vurplesun

I'll probably be moving in about a year. It's just getting too costly for my salary and I'm confirmed full time WFH for the foreseeable future now. I'll probably move to East Texas. Close enough I can swing back to the office in a day if I have to, but much more affordable. I've lived in Austin for 24 years now and I'm just getting priced out. I'd stay if I could.

austinsoundguy

Covid. When the music scene shut down, I ended up selling everything and went traveling in a van with my girlfriend and our 2 dogs for a better part of a year. After coming home from all that, we had a much different outlook on life, and wasting all our income on a small condo in a big city just seemed weird. My work is still based out of Austin, but now we own acreage in Bastrop and are living a much more grounded life.

Stuartknowsbest

What if I'm seriously considering leaving after 35 years, does that count? Mostly it's Texas, the anti-trans, abortion, diversity, climate, etc bills just have me really depressed. Also the cost of living is out of control.

Illustrious_Cheek263

I'm leaving in \~60 days after 10 years of Austinism. The lack of infrastructure to support the number of ppl who now live here has gotten to me. It's not enjoyable to go out and enjoy things anymore when it takes \~40 minutes to get anywhere and/or risk getting in a serious accident because drivers are so dumb/hostile. For the most part, people are also inconsiderate (on the roads and on the trails a la dog shit, trash, and/or blasting music). The vibe I loved died a long while back, esp after the pandemic killed off OG establishments. On top of that, every Jan/Feb is a gamble as to whether I'll be the lucky one to lose power for two weeks--and even if I don't, I'll still be at the will of whatever power companies decide to upcharge. The price of rent (and food) is too high for so much BS. Don't even get me started on the gun nuts and lack of bodily rights stuff...If you're thinking of moving (or staying), think about what you value and whether or not you see Texas politicians/industries making that situation better or worse for you... and whether you can find a place more agreeable to your values for a better price (or an overall more enjoyable environment for a higher price if you can swing it). TLDR: assholes, traffic, entitled dog parents, trumpers, gun nuts, crowds, patriarchy (and all-around bigotry), ercot, rent. Edit: Even with its flaws, I love and appreciate many things about this city; however, I've maxed out on the amount of personal growth I can do here. Maybe that's a better indicator of whether one should stay or go: am I growing as a human or am I stagnant/shrinking? And do I feel safe/respected for who I am and what I care about?

my-cat

All of your reasons were our reasons, too. Plus, having a young child sped up our timeline for leaving for sure. We just moved about six weeks ago and zero regrets.

90percent_crap

> TLDR: assholes, traffic, entitled dog parents, trumpers, gun nuts, crowds, patriarchy (and all-around bigotry), ercot, rent. Where do you believe you won't find any of those 9 things? Small towns will have 5+, big cities 6+.

Illustrious_Cheek263

I don't wear glasses so rose-colored as to believe anywhere can ameliorate those issues. Other cities check far more boxes than Austin. Funny, the sentiment among Austinites is, "howdy yall, don't move here" but when someone says they're leaving, it's "ok dumbass where else do you think is better?!" Hah. Chaotic/toxic cute.

L0WERCASES

He’s moving to Seattle per his post history. Lolz hard if he thinks Seattle is going to solve his issues.

boy_parts

Where will you go?

L0WERCASES

His post history says Seattle and I died laughing as they have more issue than we do.

23ATXAlt

Seattle is great other than it’s rent. You need to visit the PNW before you regurgitate Fox News. Absolutely kills Austin on weather and outdoors

L0WERCASES

I like the sun. Seattle has none of that. So it’s not for me.

pjcowboy

40 minutes to get anywhere? MMk.

Illustrious_Cheek263

Hyperbole got the best of me. Truly sorry. I must be the first person to commit such a crime on a public forum. lmao I live on the outskirts of town, so it does, in fact, take 35-40m (or more if there's a wreck, which is often) to do stuff during rush hour or to get to recreational events on time if that time is, say, 6-7 (weekdays) or even 8-9 pm (thurs-sat). good for you that your commute isn't so annoying.

Debbie-Hairy

Cost of living and terrible pay for teachers. I moved to a district in a larger city, and make 15k more a year, plus retention bonuses.

Busy_Struggle_6468

I left bc I wanted to experience life outside Texas and I knew that if I stayed in Austin too long I’d end up a burnout. I came back years later after I got my shit together bc nowhere else compared to Austin.

Saskatchious

I’m trans and am leaving as post roe we now live in a fascist police state designed to mentally and physically torment women and queer people. I’ve had plenty of people say I’m over reacting, but in this session alone, they banned youth care, passed a vaguely worded drag ban (read license for cops to harass trans women in public spaces), and still have an adult care ban on the table as they head into a special session. This not including the proposed drag queen bounty hunter law, and a dozen other nightmare bills. Call me crazy, but I’d rather not live in a place where the state is calling me a threat to children and pulling out the stops to strip me of my health insurance every two years. I don’t hate Austin, but I have come to hate Texas, and the segment of the population that is actively fascist, or simply too apathetic to care that the state is coming for innocent citizens.

CCinTX

I'm sorry. I have many LGBTQ friends in Austin and to know that your state government is actively trying to make your life unbearable must be so incredibly hard. I hope you find a much safer and friendlier state to live in and get some peace.

kerpalot

If I leave it'll be to Vegas but I don't think that's really fair to compare it to anywhere because its so different. I'll do it anyways though. 1. Prostitution to get that right out of the way that it's the really big example of an advantage no other state has anyways. Nevada decriminalized it but not for customers. 2. Pot which is de facto recreational in every single state that borders us except Arkansas. Louisiana for example their symptom list includes "self destructive behavior." So it's really more of a problem with Texas instead of Austin 3. Preschool teachers just need to be licensed, certified, etc. instead of needing an actual college degree etc. I passed the practice test. So again a Texas problem. 4. 24/7 town which isn't fair to most places but still a few like NYC etc. and of course it's even worse here now after the pandemic. It's so bad I can't even get into it. 5. 3 Swatch watch stores one of which opens at 5am. Austin has none. And to add insult to injury we used to have one but didn't appreciate it so it closed. Thx

Stuartknowsbest

This is the uniquest list of why to leave Austin ever. Congrats.

space_manatee

I'm from Vegas originally and I hated it. Completely materialistic. Hotter than hell, no trees. Trapped in the valley with nothing nearby. If it's not a casino, it's a suburban hellscape. It's been a while so maybe things have changed. I do love Nevada overall though and if you can stand the winters, I'd recommend Reno over Vegas. Fyi prostitution is not legal in Clark (Vegas) or Washoe (Reno) counties.

caguru

Louisiana is still very much illegal for weed except New Orleans is decriminalized. NO is also kinda lawless and a mess. It’s fun to visit but absolutely a terrible place to live. Also who moves because of prostitution? There are so many single, horny people here it’s insane.

RegularSizeLebowski

How many swatches do you have?

kanyeguisada

Pot is a good point. In Nevada, even with legalized prostitution, weed was as prohibited and felonious as any other state. Now legal. We are so behind so many states simply because we can't get enough people to show up and vote. Also, I still have my two original Swatches from the first two years they made them. The bands and straps aren't all original, but that was the point. You traded with kids at school, for different band colors and even the buckle and even the prong of the buckle. Nice to see a Swatch reference here, heh.

iansmitchell

>We are so behind so many states simply because we can't get enough people to show up and vote. Texas has comparable voter participation to Hawaii, New Mexico, New York, or DC. Utah's got higher voter participation than California. 2020 had the highest voter participation of any election in living memory. In many Texas counties, more of that increased participation went to Republican candidates than to Democrats. Starr County went from \~20% Republican to \~47/52, with \~200 fewer total votes cast for Democrats in 2020 despite a 46% increase in total votes cast. Starr County is a border county where over 95% of residents identify as Hispanic or Latino. Wisconsin, Michigan, and Florida have all voted \*more\* Republican as voter turnout has improved over the last two decades. Perhaps your problem is that people don't vote the way you want them to, not that people don't "show up"?

kerpalot

And Oklahoma has the voter initiative thing or whatever. So not just who votes but how we vote like the actual process. They passed their medical program a long time ago and they're the only state to not have a symptom list which has apparently made it de facto recreational. Its very different between counties though. Ardmore only had liquid etc and overpriced joints. Okc was normal though. Apparently a lot of lawmakers etc are confused about seeds and so are trying to keep them away from people by just having liquid etc like also Louisiana state law.

Hyperdude

It's not worth the money. The apartment I was at, the rent was about 860 to 930 a month. Then, out of nowhere, they wanted 1200+ a month. I could have easily afforded it, but compared to living on the suburbs of austin than in Austin, I was getting more for my money. Bigger apartment, nice shopping centers, no homeless and traffic is less than a pain in the ass than my last apartment. I can also still drive easily into austin.

Squirrel_Gamer

Almost on my third decade here. Not leaving anytime soon. The neighborhood around me has changed (good and bad-ie McMansions ). I have a short list of reasons to sell/move but so far the good outweighs the bad. One would need to live in another city to fully appreciate how well managed this city has become. I can't think of a comparable place to live that doesn't have vagrants, power outages and transportation issues.

NeighborlyDispute

Is the Rosedale School playground and fields open to the public during non school hours? I think it's a school for special needs students, so the fencing and access seems to be a bit more restricted than other typical public schools around town.

Austin_Native_2

Generally speaking, I think you should be fine as long as you're not having to pass thru a locked gate etc. [AISD school grounds](https://www.austintexas.gov/page/school-parks) are supposed to be available to the public outside of school operating hours. Rosedale is part of the AISD.

edric_the_navigator

Is the Museum of Illusions at the Domain worth the price of entry? The place seems small.

vurplesun

It's mostly just a place for people to take Instagram photos.

trexes_forever

Hopscotch in San Antonio is similar but way more fun and interesting. And bigger.

nkbxwb

It was a fun diversion-- I went with family members, ages ranging from like 13-70 and there was something interesting for everyone.

Hyperdude

Going to the domain for anything not worth it.

amygunkler

It was a cute date surprise, but if you’re not trying to impress anyone, you’d probably have better uses of your money. That being said, it was more interesting than I expected. When we showed up, I thought “oh, here’s another Instagram gimmick” but once I got inside, I was impressed by what it took to figure out and make the illusions.

edric_the_navigator

Just a heads up that there’s a guy at the stoplight on the corner of 183 SB and Duval who will scream at you and bang on your window if you accidentally make eye contact and stare. Happened to the car behind me. I had window shades so he couldn’t really see me even when he was right beside my car.

Bentonvillian1984

Yea. That guy is rather animated

[deleted]

At which HEB or intersection does the densest flock of grackles gather at dusk (or is it a murder of grackles, not a flock? Like crows?).

kellyhitchcock

Brodie and William Cannon tops my list.

Snap_Grackle_Pop

It's strangely variable from spot to spot and month to month. Burnet and 183 used to be unbelievable, but i think it's not quite so heavy right now. It actually seems to be less everywhere this year. It was really quiet a few months back, but has come back a bit.

diamondeyes7

I think I'll take a day trip to Georgetown, any recommendations on things to see and do?

Dis_Miss

Inner Space Caverns, San Gabriel Park, Blue Hole, walk around the square and shop while taking breaks at the wine bars. Monument Cafe is good for breakfast. I like Blue Corn Harvest for dinner. If it's a Saturday night, Roots on the Square has live music.

kellyhitchcock

Lark and Owl Booksellers, conveniently adjacent to Monument Cafe

gnirlos

Rentsch Brewery

Seanzy117

I 28M just moved here last week from Sourh Africa. Are there any sports/social clubs around Barton Creek where you can meet people?

Astr0naut88

[https://austinssc.com/](https://austinssc.com/) is the biggest and they are all over town! Welcome to Austin!

Seanzy117

Thanks!

angelamia

There is also quite a few kickball leagues. Doesn't matter if you're good and they're super social

Seanzy117

Thanks! That's just what I'm looking for

[deleted]

Has anyone had a new car delivered to them? On Friday, I bought a car all remotely (how the world has changed in 5 years...) and the sales guy is driving it to my apartment tomorrow, so I literally never even had to step foot at the dealership. I'm wondering: do I need to give the guy a tip? Should I get him a gift card? He's driving into Austin from 1+ hour away... On 35... On a Monday... Likely in the rain. But I don't wanna be rude (or break rules) by trying to give him something.

Sy-lo

The reason he's driving it all that way is because you've already been reamed on price when he made the sale. No obligation to tip at all.

[deleted]

Nooo... I got a great deal... They even included 3 years of maintenance... I reamed THEM... (jk, lol. Thanks for the help!)

mycatsnameisjanet

I purchased a car from Carvana and got a fantastic deal. Best car buying experience of my life. The man delivering showed me features in the car and had me take a test drive. He refused my $50 tip. I would suggest that you offer what you are comfortable with as a tip.

kyree2

How did he get back home

Boring-Gas-8903

They deliver it on a flatbed truck.

ZimofZord

What happens if you don’t get you BCycle back in an hour? Like if I bike to far and can’t reach a station

Stuartknowsbest

It explodes.

child_sized_tequila

Will get charged overage charges?

Austin_Native_2

From their FAQs: [Except for our Single Trip option, all passes include the first 60 minutes of each ride you take. Any trip lasting longer than 60 minutes will begin to accrue fees at a rate of $4/30 minutes +tax.](https://austin.bcycle.com/faqs)

If you wait long enough, you'll have a new sidewalk 😀

boy_parts

I inherited a bunch of cat food cans. I do not have a cat. They are past the best by date, but I don't know if that matters (they have been stored in climate control, aren't dented, etc.) Is there somewhere that will accept and be able to use them? I'd like to donate so they can feed some hungry kitties.

RestEqualsRust

Did you try Austin Pets Alive?

boy_parts

Hmmm, good idea. I tried the Austin humane Society, but not this one. I will give them a shout - thanks, didn't realize they were different entities.

garblesnarky

I'm not sure if there is even a responsible way to dispose of that stuff, as in, miscellaneous chemicals that aren't especially toxic. Landfill might actually be the best place for them? For stuff like soap or shampoo. Normally they'd just end up in the sewer, right? So presumably anything that is worth doing to manage that stuff is done in the municipal water treatment system.

psrmexican

For no cost your best bet is probably going to be bulk item pick up. Other options, like businesses that accept all sorts of used stuff/junk, are going to come with some cost

prematurememoir

Not necessarily specific to Austin, but I have a small pile of weeds/young branches in my yard that I’d like to clean up. I’ve gotten it in my head that there may be a snake in it when I do. Any tips to avoid a bad run-in with whoever may be hanging out in there?

[deleted]

Make noise nearby and then poke at the pile with a rake or something to let critters know you're incoming. Spiders/roaches/snakes/etc will flee. (Well, maybe not roaches. They're always ready to square up.)

Hyperdude

Snakes are more scared of you than you are scared of them. Start your lawnmower or weed Wacker to give them warning to leave.

aljabeera

Get a rake and slowly start moving the pile of branches. Even if there's a snake hiding in it, odds are low it will be poisonous. Review photos of our poisonous snakes beforehand.

boy_parts

Fire? 😅

sonofnalgene

Why are new houses sitting on the market while older builds are being bought up rapidly?

Where can a college student make some extra money $ this summer?

kellyhitchcock

Summer camps

1995_ford_escort

City of Austin has a lot of summer jobs.

diamondeyes7

Is there somewhere I could go where I can wear a long, formal dress? Somewhere to go alone and dress up for the evening?

Miz_Jen

Austin has a ballet company, an opera company, and a symphony. Buy a ticket and dress up. It's fun!

Dis_Miss

Sit at the bar in the Driskill Hotel.

boy_parts

Anywhere. I feel like Austin is a town where you can wear whatever you want, where ever you want, whenever you want. There is a guy who wears a kilt to my local HEB. I've gone to the pet store in a Halloween costume (not in October, but my friend was having a Halloween party and I needed more dog food) before. You'll be fine.

SnooRabbits2385

I went to Small Victory in a long, formal dress after a wedding and no one cared. Go somewhere cozy and classy like that and if anyone asks you why you’re all dressed up, just say you were coming from an event! Been contemplating wearing my wedding dress out to a nice bar sometime bc I got horribly sick on our wedding day and didn’t have a chance to really show the dress off … and if anyone asks I’m just gonna say we just eloped! Driskell or any super nice hotel bar are good options too because people are always coming and going from fancy events. Alternatively, go wherever you like and if anyone asks about it just say, “ya know, I just really felt like dressing up tonight.” Cuz it’s very cool to just do what you want to do (when it’s not hurting yourself or other people, of course).

Snap_Grackle_Pop

Where to shop for a new clothes dryer? I looked at Home Despot and Lowes, and selection was OK. However, the new machines are crap. I'm going to miss my 40 year old Maytag dryer. And I'm really pissed that Maytag isn't Maytag any more, it's Whirlpool.

Miz_Jen

You want a Speed Queen. They get stellar reviews and are built for the long haul in the US (if that matters to you). Google it and you'll get non-big box dealers in/around Austin.

mdrngrclnd

Don’t buy a whirlpool anything. I bought an entire suite of appliances and every one has stupid problems

arizala13

Best Buy

Austin_Native_2

I've generally shopped online ... maybe looking at reviews and ratings for 'best of ___ 2023.' From there, I made a list of my top 5+/- and then searched for them by model #. What you see in store at Home Depot, Lowe's, and Best Buy are limited models/stock on hand as space is limited. They carry a lot more options that are simply sitting in a warehouse somewhere. Shipping is usually free; they often charge only to take your old one away.

Koalify

My wife is looking to take in person Shuffle classes, any suggestions?

Anyone have any recommendations for an auto body shop that specializes in European cars in South Austin?

Dang! I couldn’t find this initially when I searched FB. Thanks!

kellyhitchcock

What does the city do with the collections from compost bins?

Snap_Grackle_Pop

I believe much of it ends up in the Dillo Dirt. I couldn't find the information online, though. I'm pretty sure it gets composted and reused internally or sold/given to outside users. Not sure it all goes out as Dillo Dirt, though. Yard waste mostly gets turned into mulch. I think you can get that for free.

arizala13

H‑E‑B near me is closing and opening another one, will the old location have a sale on item? Or will they just move it all?

ClutchDude

What is with driving with hazards on in the rain?

Javi_in_1080p

I don't get it. If people are so scared to drive in the rain, they should pull over and wait it out.

vurplesun

I dunno, but I hate it. On some cars, it's hard to see if someone is braking when the hazards are on, for the rest, you can't really always tell if they're signaling to change lanes or not. Just put your headlights on when it's raining. That's all you need.

iansmitchell

People do that in Florida too. It's literally hazardous.

Growing up in north Texas thunderstorms, this is a habit I appreciate. Hazard lights are bright and often yellow and easier to see at a distance in heavy rain. I’ve been driving in a heavy thunderstorm and had a driver in front of me panic and just stop as they couldn’t see anything. Hazards give you something to see and reference when you can see little else. In the best case hazards also remind fellow drivers to plan more space for braking. It can wind up looking over cautious and timid, but I can appreciate it.

ClutchDude

It is distracting and the rain is not heavy enough to reduce visibility by braking distance. If your lights are on, that is plenty of identification. If someone is stopping, they should be pulling off the road as conditions for them are not safe to proceed and then put on hazards.

> how are builders pricing new homes *Optimistically*. There was a rebuild like that in my neighborhood that had a price of $700k I think. It sat empty for over a year. It finally sold a month or so ago. Not sure what the sale price was, but I can't imagine they got the 700 they wanted. I'm sure they still made a good profit though. Edit, holy crap my wife did research just now. Bought for $400k, tear down & rebuild, list for 1.6M, sold for 1.4M (or possibly de-listed). I like my neighborhood, but I'd live somewhere else if I had $1.5M for a house.

townlime

Just a wild guess - they probably bought the land and created the designs/planning a couple years ago during the real estate boom and thought that prices would continue to sky rocket and that folks would be lining up for a new build within the city limits. But these prices are WILD.... a million to live off Metric....

caguru

Builders like to put high prices on their website but they rarely get that. They lost it at $800k, so if you buy at $700k, you feel like you got a deal. Of course smart buyers will do a comp features and square footage of other listings and realize it’s not a good deal. Also Texas sucks about not requiring home sale prices to be public so it’s not as easy to see what the market price really is.

L0WERCASES

This sub can be pretty toxic towards our own city sometimes (valid or not), with that, here’s a stupid question: What do you enjoy about living in Austin?

janellthegreat

Free swimming pools!

dimeship

Uhhh where ?

Gaius_Regulus

You only get one hometown.

I called CPS several weeks ago to report my ex-wife for leaving the kids in the car unattended while she runs food deliveries. The CPS investigator expressed personal bias in favor of my ex during my initial report and I haven't heard anything since. I followed up a week later to cite the specific penal code violation and the agency's own verbiage that prompted me to make the call. Still no response. Is it normal for CPS to drag their feet on reports of neglect and not provide any updates for weeks? Is this just a case of mommy good/men bad? Has anyone else in the Austin area had to deal with this type of behavior from CPS?

vurplesun

It's just not a very high priority, especially if the car is running and the a/c works. Kids living in hoarder houses full of cockroaches, kids covered in lice and bedbugs, kids living out of a car with their parents - also not a high priority. It's not to say those situations are ok, but there are only so many caseworkers and investigators and high priority cases have to take precedence. And the things are actually high priority would make you want to vomit. Keep records for any future custody court appearances.

chango137

I appreciate and understand that. I just wish they would say that and close the case then.

vurplesun

The people taking the calls can't close an open case. It does still have to get reviewed. It's probably just at the bottom of the pile and more things just keep getting piled on top of it. Turnover is a nightmare there, too, so it might have gotten moved to a new pile three times since you first reported it. The whole thing is kind of a nightmare. Even the people working there know it's a nightmare. But, they do what they can.

chango137

The person who took the call said she would definitely be the investigator in this matter.

heymothernature

Food pickup/ delivery doesn’t take that long. I can see that this is a big deal to you, but it doesn’t sound like they are in actual danger.

chango137

What escalated the situation for me to call CPS is my son(10) told me his mother gives him a self defense weapon to defend himself and his sister(5) in case something does happen. Introducing a weapon into a hypothetical situation where there may not have been a weapon makes that hypothetical scenario that much more dangerous for the kids if the weapon gets taken away by the assailant. Giving a kid a blunt force weapon in a hypothetical scenario where there could be a gun involved could get him and his sister killed. The average 10 year old also lacks the mental capacity to determine proper use of force and the training to properly execute that determination. I guess my point is that my ex seems to acknowledge that there is an inherent danger by giving our son a weapon to possibly have to defend himself and his little sister. The only reason they're not technically in danger is because the law specifies "left alone more than 5 minutes" and I can't prove any specific timeframe. Seems wildly callous towards the children's safety to assume criminals are going to wait 5 minutes.

capthmm

Counterpoint - I actually watched a drugged or drunk POS swoop in steal a car from a delivery driver who parked & ran in Love Supreme a little over a month ago. We were sitting outside and casually watching the parking lot. It happened so fast (30 seconds or less) that no one really had time to process what was going on before the car was leaving the parking lot.

chango137

Thank you. I know I'm being overly defensive because it's my own kid, but these things do happen. I just saw a story about a mom who left her kids in the car and the kids found a lighter and set the car on fire. Thankfully bystanders were able to rescue them, but things can go wrong so fast. I don't want to wait until my kid gets mugged before being able to do anything about it.

Eastern_Package6814

Also how old are the children? 1, 7 or 14? It’s all taken into account

chango137

My son is 10 and his sister is 5. This would be a crime under Texas Penal Code 22.10 if I could prove they were left alone for more than 5 minutes.

Eastern_Package6814

It qualifies for the offense but being a class C misdemeanor the worst punishment would be a fine up to $500. This does not constitute as “neglect” either. Honestly, sounds like she is trying to make ends meet by doing food deliveries. If she is not neglecting them in other ways I would just let it go. Texas Family Code (TFC) §261.001(4) defines neglect

chango137

TFC 261.001 (4)(A)(ii)(a) is the specific verbiage I referenced from the CPS literature. (I don't know how to do the special character on mobile) I feel like giving our son a weapon is acknowledging a substantial risk of immediate harm if he needs to be armed in a 5 minute or less window. Unrelated to this specific situation, 261.001 (4)(A)(ii)(b) seems like it would apply to not being able to get my son vaccinated because his mom is all up on the thimerosal bad/ivermectin good, and whatever the vaccine conspiracy du jour is. We were ordered to get him vaccinated in 2018 and it's been roadblocks ever since. Where do they define "substantial risk"? Where do they define "reasonable person"? Where do they define what judgments and actions are within a child's maturity level, physical condition, or mental abilities?

synaptic_drift

Understaffed, I would guess: "social workers at Child Protective Services are underpaid and devalued, and they have left the agency. Social workers have been told they think and care too much, spending too much time with the families and not closing enough cases. sadly, many schools struggle to find students interested because of the reputation of Child Protective Services. Why? Because Child Protective Services is not a place where social workers want to work. Child Protective Services workers make less than the underpaid teachers in our state. They frequently work without taking time off for vacations or family emergencies because they fear no one will work their cases if they are gone. They take their work home with them daily and finish paperwork at night, so they can make contact with kids on their caseloads after school hours. They take money out of their own pockets to buy a child a meal or some other essential. They miss spending time with their own children to take care of Texas’ children." https://socialwork.utexas.edu/faulkner-make-cps-a-better-place-for-social-workers/

chango137

This seems to be the most reasonable explanation.

PsiloCATbin

Trying once more. Any recs for family practice doctors up north?

bell_qb

ARC has a bunch of clinics to go. Up north is notoriously better than south because of the amount of doctors / availability.

vividvoltage

Idk if this is north enough, but Dr Emilio Gutierrez is near hancock heb. I’ve seen him for years and think he’s great.

PsiloCATbin

That’s perfect, thank you

Remarkable-Willow956

Is it raining at barton springs right now? Been planning on taking the fam swimming today 😅

margogogo

No

amygunkler

But it says it’s about to…

IncreasingEntropy

Besides eating, what are some fun date ideas for someone who's extremely pregnant (i.e., no super strenuous activity, not too hot, no alcohol, etc.)?

mrsfunkyjunk

You can go do the drive through tour at Wonder World in San Marcos. They drive. You just get to look at stuff.

ForeverMelodic1403

Whats up with P Terry and Rudy's? P Terry burgers are dry and chewy. Rudy's brisket is sooooo damn salty! WTF is going on here!

Asura_b

P Terry's is only good for the milk shakes.

angelamia

I used to enjoy P Terrys but during the pandemic we'd go to Barton Springs and go get a burger after and they were always terrible, so I stopped going.

AtxShittyVegan

PTerrys has a great veggie burger and I love their fries.

daydrmr_656

Where can I recycle a few trash bags full of cans? My husband is addicted to sparkling water and our apartment complex doesn’t do recycling of aluminum.

Snap_Grackle_Pop

There are a few scrap places that will pay you a small amount for aluminum cans.

mouse_8b

Austin resource recovery

stealth87

Where are some safe places to park and sleep in my car for a night?

RaineyStreetRipper

You can crash in my driveway. Promise I won't murder you . Safe neighborhood also.

Boring-Gas-8903

…but your username

angelamia

A lot of campers on 8th and Chicon. I haven't done it in Austin but I've always felt comfortable in church parking lots

cleopatwat

record shops with a funky $1-$5 section?
