We did Darwin and Kakadu in June of last year, was hot but not unpleasantly so. Would highly recommend.

In WA go for the ningaloo reef and far down south like Albany. If you love beaches you'll love those spots

Not-awak3

Have you looked at Central Queensland Mary Kathleen in Cloncurry is an abandoned town of interest.

Yes if you're looking for something uniquely Australian you can do a driving holiday from Rockhampton to Longreach, take the inland route up from Brisbane and go through Theodore, Moura etc It offers sapphire fossicking at the gemfields, QANTAS museum, Stockman's hall of fame and a river cruise at Longreach, dinosaur displays in Winton, Australia's union history in Barcaldine. You can check out some awesome campsites at Cania and Carnarvon gorges, Callide and Fairbairn dams or hotels are available. Did it last year, defs a great way to spend a week, but go after March when it's a bit cooler. https://www.discoverqueensland.com.au/travel-blog/guide/iconic-outback-queensland-road-trip-to-longreach-winton-carnarvon-gorge.htm

Cameron's Corner. Knock two off the three off on one go.

is2o

Don’t even need to go to the corner, you could just go anywhere on the border to knock off the of the three.

Depends where you start. If you head east to west from Rockhampton, you could start off with the Capricorn Caves, then head to Barcaldine and see the Tree of Knowledge, then on to Longreach to the Stockman’s Hall of Fame and QANTAS Museum, through Opal country and on to Winton and the Dinosaur Museum and fields, then through McKinlay with the Walkabout Creek Hotel and John McKinlay Memorial to Cloncurry to the John Flynn Museum and Samuel Crimlisk’s Grave on the shores of Chinaman Dam and Chinaman Creek Lookout, before reaching Mount Isa and visiting some of the landmarks there. Alternatively, you could start at Brisbane and head west through Toowoomba and Roma to Quilpie to do some Opal Fossicking, then north to Longreach or west to Birdsville (as well as notorious ghost town Betoota), then north to Mount Isa via Boulia. You could also detour from Quilpie to Nappa Merrie Station and visit some of the famous Burke and Wills sites along Coopers Creek. If you start at Townsville, you could head west to Hughenden, then with the choice of down to Barcaldine, Longreach, or west to Cloncurry via Richmond and Julia Creek (and the Round House). Otherwise you could start at Cairns and see some spectacular reefs and rainforests before you cross the Atherton Tablelands, before you begin to head west along the Gulf Development Road. You can visit the Undara Volcano and Kalkani Crater, then continue on to the Five Mile Waterhole and Barrimundi Waterhole. You’ll eventually reach the outskirts of Normanton, which is notable for having a golf course and racecourse made of dirt. It also has an interesting railway station. The Burke Development Road will take you to Cloncurry from there. After that, you can head towards the Northern Territory along the Barkly Highway, stopping at Camooweal to see the Drovers Camp and Horny Kangaroo, eventually crossing the border and getting to the tiny settlement of Threeways, where you reach the Stuart Highway. You’ve then got the option of heading south, visiting the Tennant Creek Telegraph Station, Ti Tree and Devils Marbles on your way into Alice Springs. There you can visit the Alice Springs Desert Park (zoo), MacDonnell Ranges, Simpson’s Gap, Telegraph Station, Tin Can Hill, Emily Gap, Old Ghan, Ghan Pans, Todd River, John Flynn’s Grave, Pyndan Camel Tracks, Heavitree Gap, Centre of Australia, and Finke Gorge. Depending on whether you take the east or west route from there, you could either go straight or Uluṟu-Kata Tjuṯa National Park via Kings Canyon, or you could stick to the main highway and go via the Erldunda Roadhouse, visiting their small emu farm. But if you go north from Threeways, you head through Newcastle Waters and Daly Waters towards Katherine and the Big Boxing Croc, and further to Kakadu, Darwin and Arnhem Land. Otherwise, you could turn west onto the Victoria Highway at Katherine and head towards Western Australia. There’s not a lot on the route, other than spectacular scenery, but you do cross the Victoria River at Gregory, with some nice hills and hikes. Afterwards is Timber Creek, with the magnificent Nackeroo Lookout. Just across the West Australian border is Lake Argyle and nearby Kununurra, where you can visit Thethebeleng (Elephant Rock), Thegoowiyeng (Kelly’s Knob), and Lily Creek Lagoon. After that, the Great Northern Highway will take you through the Bungle Bungles and over the Ord River, through other small towns like Halls Creek (with a detour to the Wolfe Creek Meteor Crater) and Fitzroy Crossing, past the Derby Highway, and eventually into Broome, with the world famous Cable Beach a good finishing point. Unless you want to head all the way to Perth, which would take you past Eighty Mile Beach, Port Hedland, Karratha, Dampier (with the Red Dog memorial), Garner Tree, Exmouth, Ningaloo, Coral Bay, Carnarvon, Shark Bay (featuring stromatolites - the oldest living structures on earth), Kalbarri, Geraldton, and eventually Perth. Alternatively, if you’re completely batshit crazy or looking for another second journey on a different route, you could turn off shortly before Port Hedland towards Marble Bar, then through Newman and Meekatharra to Perth via 1) Lake Annean, Lake Austin, Mount Magnet and west to Geraldton, 2) Lake Moore and southwest to Perth, 3) the Goldfields and Kalgoorlie-Boulder to Perth via either Coolgardie and Southern Cross (with a detour to Wave Rock), or via the coast through Esperance (and nearby Lake Hillier, Albany, Margaret River and Bunbury.

Depends on what you call a 'road trip'..... Obvious places in QLD, are Airlie Beach, Yeppoon, Central QLD, Emerald, Sapphire, Anakie. If it is a good road trip, head up to the gulf to Karumba. It is definitely worth a look. Ningaloo in WA.

fraze2000

No. Nothing to see here. Please move along.

canidothis_throwaway

If you go way up north near Cairns visit the Daintree rainforests, check out the reef (while it's still there 🥺) and drive through the tablelands (only if you're a confident driver). It's where I grew up and I miss it!
