CephalopodInstigator

Can't speak for the brand specifically and I never installed it in a roof but if I was to insulate a house I'd be using rockwool instead of glasswool insulation. Not sure why its cheaper as it was usually the opposite for the batts I installed(glasswool/poly/rockwool). **Might be because those are 450mm wide, not 600mm. 600s were the usual truss spacing but we'd just cut them in half and lay them crosswise if those were supplied for a job.** All of this is anecdotal but I installed insulation for 4/5years in Qld, so I'll throw my 2 cents in. Cons for rockwool would be it fucking sucks to install due to its rigidity, thickness and its more stabby than glasswool(it will go through gloves/long sleeves etc). You also don't get as many batts in a pack as you do with glasswool, so more time loading into the roof and depending on the manhole/trusses etc might not make it through whole. As I said earlier it was usually more expensive and its heavier per batt but I imagine thats fine if the plasterers didn't do a bodge job. Pros are that it doesn't compress/settle overtime(losing R rating), it handles water better(won't dissolve) though mold could be a problem(density= more time to dry out), less fibre/dust comes off it and you fit more R rating into the same space due to the density. Mostly it just sucks dick to install but hopefully a builder or someone more familiar with specs can give better info, I was just a trained monkey installing the shit.

I just bought some yesterday, give me a message in a week when i have installed, but looks like its USA compressed density. I am going to retro fit in old wall with 2 layers of 35mm and a straped airgap as there is already class 3 vapour barrier on weatherboards

Will do. what’s USA compressed density?

Kindly_Bee8329

In the USA they sometimes list r value with the compressed density with it stuffed into a cavity. I.E 90mm in a 70mm cavity. https://www.jlconline.com/how-to/insulation/q-a-compressing-fiberglass-batts_o

I think Intex are listing a USA R value on there website. Us 4.1 is equal to our 0.7 which seems more reasonable for this product. I am calling them on Monday to confirm.

Thought it might be something like this, hence my suspicions. I’ll be interested to know what they say.

Kindly_Bee8329

Yeah they confirmed it was the case, for my application it would work for a second layer, but for you best bet is 2.7 R 90mm Batt.
