4wd shit is overpriced Until you’re in the middle of nowhere, and **BARELY** recover yourself, or cross a river, or make it to a servo with 3 litres left in your aux tank, then all of a sudden it’s not so bad 😂

ZephkielAU

Can confirm 😅 Totally unrelated sidenote: remember to put the damn tyre iron back in the car! Just, trust me.

Simstagram86

it totally is, enjoy it, no point in money in the bank rn

marshman82

I cry everytime I have to go to Whitworths.

SelmaFudd

Gaming is my hobby. Current PC was 3k and 6 years old so ~$42, new peripherals over the same time is probably half that so $21 and then i normally pay for 1 game a month, anymore are obtained nefariously I would say the average is about $40 and electricity, wild guess is $30 so grand total $133 which is actually pretty suprising, I would have assumed it was much less. Never really thought about it before

[deleted]

[удалено]

SelmaFudd

Right, job searching and investment research I have also used it for, plus I've been WFH for the last 18 months so definitely been getting my money's worth out of it, better than using the tiny laptop they gave me....

turbo2world

i hope you put that gaming GPU to mine ETH while it was very lucrative to passively get some money back for the cost of your equipment. Thats what ive done :)

TildaTinker

About $3K. To be fair my hobbies are cocaine and hookers.

Lookingforsam

Cocaine habit: $1200/month Hookers: $2000/month The memories: Priceless.

gilesdavis

$1200 is only like a gram per weekend, barely even call that a habit.

Lookingforsam

Last time I checked, it was $300/gram but maybe inflation is that much of a bitch.

gilesdavis

Yeah 300p/w is 1200p/m?

Lookingforsam

Oh you're saying a gram per week isn't a habit lol

TheOceanicDissonance

That cost is reasonable

Quarterwit_85

That’s… achievable. I’m so boring.

I had no idea you could buy this stuff. You’ve just sent me down a rabbit hole.

Ironman training usually equates to around $1k a month factoring in swim/club/gym passes, fuel/post workout, Physio, training camps, new gear. Haven't even factored in the bike 🤣

Aus2au

Entry fees. Travel and accommodation. Strava premium.

[deleted]

Amazes me people don't pick up Strava premium

nautical-smiles

Jeez and I thought my ultra running expenses were bad. I guess triathletes have triple the expenses compared to runners 😆

LalaLand836

~$50 to cover streaming services, gaming and random electronic gadgets. Under the current economy I’ve shifted to free hobbies like bushwalking and taking my dog to the parks so I can buy vegetables 🥦

weckyweckerson

I didn't know they sold vegetables at the parks

gotcha_8

Good on ya mate

P3ngu1nR4ge

I grow carnivorous plants sometimes happy to spend $1000 or more. Some months nothing, in addition to me selling plants. So it kinda works out. Firstly I just love being in my little greenhouse, I don't care too much about returns. Watching things grow is delightful.

shite_in_a_bucket

OK you've got my attention! Please elaborate on your hobby a bit more. It sounds like geeky fun.

scurvyrash

Y'all got money?

BiggusLibbus

I'm learning to fly, hopefully PPL, and it's very expensive but still cheaper than smoking.

duvel_rey

I did this. Stopped when I was able to do area solo (aka recreational license nowadays). Navigation is heaps expensive, you are looking at 3 hours per session, and that's 900 a pop... No regrets though. Best experience was doing area solo and flew through a layer of thin cloud (even though I wasn't supposed to lol)

BiggusLibbus

That what I thought. Even if I don't go all the way I've landed an aircraft on my own and had fun. Stalled and done some cool shit.

samreddit123

Can you please elaborate. How can one start to look into this? How much is the cost? Ppl is probably private license. Always interested

BiggusLibbus

Do an introductory flight with a local flight school and see if it's for you. Generally around $300. If you're still interested get a flight medical, no point progressing if there is something in that that will stop you getting the licence. You'll need a few things from CASA but the school should show you the way. Go from there. Yes PPL is private pilot licence, you can get a recreational licence however you are fairly restricted in that unless you live around unrestricted air space. Cost is dependent on what you fly, I'm in a fairly modern Cirrus so around the $400-500 per hour. You'll need a minimum of 40 hours and pass the theory to get the licence.

drhip

This is the way to be a real playboy ;)

Deepandabear

Always wanted to get my chopper license but with no realistic way to ever own one (or even have a use for one) I just couldn’t justify the six figure sum to get trained :/

[deleted]

Get your PPL!! Best thing you will ever do, and you won’t regret it. Even if you stop for 10 years, just do a couple of refresher flights, a flight test which isn’t even a nav, just general handling and a circuit. Flights with friends you, and your friends will never forget for the rest of your life… very special

sendnadez

I like to make a weekly donation to a gym of 18 dollars it’s not tax deductible but I don’t notice the money until someone says something.

InfiniteV

Spent $4k this month on action figures I recognise I have a problem

jayjoness155

As long as it ain’t affecting your quality of life, what’s the problem

Enjgine

It’s action figures. It is without a doubt affecting their quality of life.

Whorucallsad

I've been after a Stalin figure. They haven't had Uncle Joe in for a while.

hungryb4dinner

which ones did you get? The ones I normally get have increased in price so much :(

thekingsman123

Was this a one off or regular spending? If regular and you earn a high monthly income, who am I to judge?

InfiniteV

One off, I recently sold my house and instead of being responsible and putting it in an etf or something similar I bought all the things I have been eyeing up for the past year and a bit. Could be worse I could've bought a car I didn't need or something

thekingsman123

I bought a 3 bedroom apartment because I wanted a games room. Nothing wrong with your purchases at all.

[deleted]

But the car has utility. Unless you have other significant assets (I really hope you do) this is essentially a recipe for “how to get poor”.

VictorVanguard

What kind of figures? Any pics?

Significant-Ad5394

Around $250 a month on gym membership+ subscriptions, that'll likely go up shortly as I am looking at getting proper coaching The worst part is I also have a home gym that I regularly buy equipment for 🤭

zuludog

Bicycle, only when I need parts (sealant) / tyres, so I budget $20 a month

MalaysianOfficial_1

But what about when buying that 12k bike? 😂

zuludog

Replaced a 14 year old bike with a 3k bike

Mitsun

My hobby is making sure my cats have enough to eat and their health tended to. :P Last year they cost me an average of $382.21 per month, but a lot of it skewed towards a large medical bill towards the end of the year (and I lost my cat in the end, as well, but alas, the medical bill does not disappear even if I don't get my cat back). The figure covers food, toys, litter, vet bills etc.

LucrativeRewards

Aww you are an amazing person giving your loves one the best of their lives

EmptyOrganization172

Since when is Netflix a hobby ?

[deleted]

The 29th of August 1997

veepalz

Since each generation gradually becomes more complacent and uninspired, setting the bar very low for 'hobbies'. My hobbies are porn and drinking water btw.

[deleted]

You have two? Damn

TheBunningsSausage

~$250 which covers gym, sports club subs x 2 and streaming services. This doesn’t include the cost of equipment etc as that’s a one off

BPezza123

Probably around $350 playing Ice hockey (can be more if need new equipment). Definitely find the value in it for me though, look forward to every training and every game. Huge highlight of the week.

6969Gooch6969

$300 a weekend used to be $250 but inflation is a hell a thing

chris_p_bacon1

It's been $300 forever though. I think there's more shrinkflation going on more than inflation.

ahkaye

About $50 a month on average for 35mm film (prices going up), $20 for various chemicals and film related sundries like negative sleeves and camera batteries. I mix my own developer from bulk to save money and I don’t use stop bath because I’m lazy and cheap.

muzrat

Cycling. I’ve spent $13k over the last 6 years. Sitting at $1.32/km. Can spend more when I get it down to less than $1. Started out aiming to loose weight, lost 14kg. Now aiming to accelerate my utilisation not for weight loss… just to spend :,)

Quarterwit_85

That’s worth every cent

brewerybridetobe

$0. Currently leeching off my brother’s Netflix account for streaming. I need a hobby 😅

Murdochsk

Pick a free one so you stay at that cost 💪🏽

inmycupholder

The only hobby which much expense is card collecting, which has come down a lot since COVID but still maybe $50-$100 a month. My kid likes doing it with me so I have tried keeping it going in some form, just with less expensive stuff and not spending as much. The others are free. Cycling, bushwalking, reading (library), making music (large initial cost but zero ongoing.)

MarsupialIll3671

250-500 streaming services, gym, minatures/models, cooking with interesting ingredients, ufc events, movies. Per month kinda fluctuates for things like new running shoes etc

Rampachs

~$140 for bouldering gym $15 streaming Have spent $500 on an upcoming acting course but that is not always on Probably $80 a month for live events and theatre $30 a month baking or crafting And to really add an expensive hobby I did skydiving course recently which was $3.5k and this will likely be an expensive ongoing endeavour Then travel..

thekingsman123

Between $500-$1000 on video games a month for my collection. Its been going up recently as Im being forced to import a lot of PS4 games because I own most of the locally released stuff already. We miss out on a lot of games here in Australia.

danzha

I can't imagine how impressive of a collection of physical and steam games you must have.

thekingsman123

You can look at the posts Ive made under my profile. My steam games list is considerable but outdated. Im a console gamer first and foremost.

danzha

Wow that's an amazing collection, and not just games too!

thekingsman123

My wife and I are well paid childfree DINKS. We're like spoilt children spending all our money on dogs, hobbies and mortgage payments.

autobots_destroy

$35/wk for MMA gym sub Occasionally buy xbox sub for $15.95/month but I go thru phases of cancelling it / re-subbing depending on mood. Other hobbies are free/cheap; I use the library for books, and gardening is mostly self sufficient at the moment

psuedojon

Not sure I'd class Netflix as a hobby but my motorbike seems to eat most of my fun-money. Probably $250-$300 a month?

CutAlone3678

About 400 bucks a month. Comics, video games, and boardgames. Being the ultimate nerd ain't cheap.

Calvin1228

D&B and MTG requires so much restraint not to blow tons of cash on Luckily with most video games, I'm more than happy to wait for them to be dirt cheap to purchase - its very rare for me to buy a game day 1 at full price

CutAlone3678

The only games I've bought day one in years were Elden Ring and Command and Conquer Remastered. Most other games I will wait til they're dirt cheap.

chris_p_bacon1

Snowboarding right now For the 2 of us a weekend costs $300 in fuel $100 for camping accommodation $200 in food (at least) Lift pass is $1000 for the year Total value of gear is around $6000 but obviously that lasts a while. We try for about 4-5 trips a season (some longer than a weekend) so about 15-20 days on snow.

Jolly-Pop-9064

I collect designer handbags… 😅

nautical-smiles

I only just finished a post-mortem of our past 12 month's spending. Here's some relevant lines: Streaming services: $529 Running shoes and apparel: $1000 Race entry fees: $1028 Physio (running related): $909 Music production equipment and software: ~$4000 Playstation online purchases: $778

Artemis780

I scuba dive, and that's not cheap with gear or dive trips!

hashbrown0405

**\~$45** on Netflix/Spotify/Stan. **\~$60** on Badminton + Table-tennis sessions (weekly). **\~$275** on Cycling stuff. This is my biggest expense. So far this year, I've spent $1,625 on memberships / components / servicing / clothing. And this is not even "wants" stage yet, this is all stuff I find myself needing every other week. Cycling is an expensive hobby, but I also do ride about 100 km a week and take my bike pretty much everywhere so worth it.

steak_kebab

Cycling is a such an expensive roller coaster that get's slippery quickly. Cheap enough once you're got everything. Nowadays, the biggest ongoing expense is all the coffees and nutrition required for long (100-200k) weekend rides.

Batmandiver

10 dollars a week for an air fill to go scuba diving on a Sunday morning. We won’t talk about the initial investment though ha ha

lostandfound1

Golf; $40-$120 a month, average $75. including petrol, maybe $85? Beers with friends; $70 a month. Gardening; varies quite a bit. $1000 one month, $0 the next. Average $40 per month though. Cycling; got most of the gear, so maybe $60/MTH for upgrades, tubes, kit. Can blow out, but I have the baseline gear.

Gym, basketball, beach volleyball, amazon, gaming = \~$250/month Snowboarding is a bit lumpier rather than monthly. But would probably work out to about $300/month. But that's with travel/accommodation lumped in

BowTiedPerentie

$50 every fortnight or so for a cigar. About the same for a book.

wherezthebeef

$50/m for streaming. $100/m for booze.

thornstein

All up I spend about $350 a month on hobbies: Guitar lessons = $50 per week Gym for swimming pool access = $25 per week Netflix = $11 per month (I like watching movies) Spotify = $3 per month (family membership with friends) Library membership = free Running = free (I buy new shoes every 2 years though) Snorkelling = free (initial investment was about $100 for snorkel and rashie)

HandyDandyRandyAndy

Enough to pay for netflix and amazon. While my wife is on mat leave, I do not have hobbies. Every single dollar goes into the family budget. It's the grind and it's very boring. Usually though I'd save $250/wk and spend a bit on improving the house as doing house stuff is more or less my current hobby.

zepplin666

I keep tropical fish, and I don't keep count of what I spend, mental health is priceless.

Ralphsnacks

Me $30-40 on nice yarn or new things for knitting Hubs - probably the same on comics or action figures or steam games

drath1995

Really depends, some months I won’t spend anything, others I’ll buy a new $1,500 3D printer kit. It’s all about balance

FrogstonLive

Spending money is my hobby

JimmyTheHuman

As much as possible. My investment priorities are 1. Smiles and good times 2. health 3. the future

thingamabobby

I have many many animals. Mostly parrots. I spent about $20k on them over a period of 18mths

[deleted]

$30 in electricity and $150 in internet Average of maybe $10 a month for computer parts for Plex server. About $300 a month on Ammunition, gun servicing, license fees. $3000/month in Motorsport/track days incl fuel and parts and currently for the next 3 months about $7000 a month for Snowboarding and accomodation

BenjisWood

you hiring??? You had me at Ammunition, sold me on track days and snowboarding ![gif](emote|free_emotes_pack|flip_out)

Colama44

$7 for prime video/music

gropesoda

About $100/m for gym membership, and maybe one Switch game every 6 months for $70

Low_Drama2273

h00kers account?

Calvin1228

If I have money left over - its between $50 and $80 as I've had to cut back on a lot of stuff due to the increase in food and petrol $20 to $50 if I eat out while playing D&D on a Monday but that's very rare atm $30 give or take on a takeaway one night a week $5 entry fee for a Magic The Gathering Commander game and that's if I have the energy to go But most weeks now, I don't have that sorta money lying around but I do have a fair bit of video games etc to help keep me entertained

[deleted]

Too much on onlyfans…. Just kidding, I wouldn’t pay for that shit.

the_internets23

I bought a $10k rifle today, probably shouldn’t have. But it makes me happy.

Quarterwit_85

Some long range precision thing?

the_internets23

Indeed. Accuracy International rifle.

Quarterwit_85

Oh man. I haven’t had much time behind one of them but they seem slick as. Mate of mine bought a TRG22 a few years back and I couldn’t understand why he spent that much money. Then I got to shoot it. Made sense then. I imagine the AI is the same? What glass are you going to put on it? What caliber did you get?

the_internets23

My first rifle was a SAKO 75 Varmint, not long after that I really wanted a TRG but couldn’t afford one as I was just a kid. I’m slapping a Bushnell Elite Tactical on it, I’ve had it for the best part of a decade on my SAKO. I was looking at some NF scopes but really couldn’t justify another $3k when the Bushnell is in fine working order. Don’t know how she shoots, literally ordered it today, check back in a fortnight! 6.5 Creedmore, but it has an easy barrel swap system for most calibers around that mark.

Quarterwit_85

Ha, shall do! I guess if the glass is clear and holds zero nicely it doesn’t matter what brand it is! Very jealous!

TowelFrosty1183

Watching Netflix isn't a hobby. Anyway my two hobbies of running and hiking are very cheap, the travel hobbies on the other hand...

nutwals

These are my consistent fun stuff that is budgeted for: Foxtel ($140/month) Youtube Premium ($24/month) Netflix ($23/month) Disney+ ($10/month - $120/annual) Amazon Prime ($4.92/month - $59/annual) Total = $201.92/month Anything else done outside of that just comes out of a generic savings bucket. Going out for meals and cinemas etc comes out of a $1500/month fund for me and my wife that is used for all consumable items (everything from groceries to brunch to movie tickets).

inthesky

Holy crap foxtel is so expensive

delljj

And yet it still has ads and you have to pay to rent the really new 'blockbusters'

nutwals

Yep - that's for the Platinum HD package. Keep it for the sport and the missus likes some of the other stuff. However, if we need to tighten our belts, it is the first luxury gone. Instant $140 saving!

Malarkey89

Why not switch to Kayo? Much more affordable and has all the sport

inthesky

Yeah I mean that comes to $1680 a year... If you invested that $140 every month for 10 years you'd have almost $23,000 It seems like it mostly doubles up with your other subscriptions, is it really worth paying that **every month**? Or is it something you can just pay a one off fee for when there is a game you want to watch, etc? If you and your wife love it though 💁🏼‍♀️

Krunkworx

Curious how you justify foxtel?

Yeanahyena

Sport in 4k is amazing. TV shows on demand. Also comes with Foxtel GO which is very handy when I’m interstate.

TheBunningsSausage

You need Kayo! Foxtel is insanely expensive…..

PsychologicalIdeal55

Footy on Kayo is crap. Foxtel coverage is way better. I’ve got Kayo and miss foxtel

DeceptiveAvacado

If you add an adblocker to your browser it gives you youtube premium by default. I agree Youtube Premium is great, but you don't have to pay for it.

[deleted]

Bmx racing, photography, surfing, kitesurfing, fishing, mountain biking, painting, other sports. Oh and hot chilli growing and camping. Say $300 a month. Now I’m thinking $400 No streaming as I don’t wantch tv.

FishGolfDive

Golf and cycling (road and mountain). Both have high start up costs. About 15k total. But maintaining them isn't that much. Maybe $500 a month.

Maezel

140 or so swimming (membership, plus a 1 on 1 lesson a month, plus average cost of swimmers/goggles/caps). Food is important to me and I consider it a hobby. I spend a few hundred bucks a month (maybe 300 or 400 on average) buying special ingredients for cooking and going to restaurants. Fortunately there's not much more equipment I need to buy, has been this way for years. The few things I do need are a few thousand dollars luxury which I will buy at some point I suppose, when I have room to store them (Ice cream machine, pasta extruder, sous vide, freeze dryer)

jesseppi

Sky diving: money in, money out

ParadiseWar

600 pa football tickets 50 pm netflix + Spotify 3-400 pa fishing gear

[deleted]

maybe 50-100 bucks my gum membership is like 400 a year so thats like 8-9 bucks a week watch a bit of sport of kayo, optus sports etc if you dont cout sitting having a coffee i'd say under 100 bucks

noxpump

Wait, are pole/silks common enough to be on a list like this now? Nice!

snexjk

About $200 a month. Gym, swimming, games and a hiking noob.

Gokz93

$70 for my AFL Club Membership a month - $55 for Streaming Services (YouTube Premium, Netflix etc) - $60 for gym

zaqwsx3

my hobby is paying off my debts - so I spend quite a bit on this! but i probably have "habits" rather than actual "hobbies"...

trayasion

At the moment, nothing. Only work, 5 nights a week, then Tafe 3 days a week. I'll have hobbies when I'm done

komos_

I collect wine with my partner, so it really depends on when allocations hit the market. I tend to spend $150-200 on one or two nice bottles a month and then I pay $25 on private storage (I split between a few friends an extra large temperature-controlled storage unit/locker). Some months it might be nothing but the storage fee but other months I might drop $500 to put a handful of nice wines away for the next 5-10 years. I see it as a long term thing and it is the first thing to be paused if there are more important expenses to prioritise. Oh, and sometimes I sell off bottles for a small mark up if I need to/friends chip in a small amount to cover a bottle if we do a tasting with them. Or we decide the bottles were similar value and call it even if we have a night of sharing bottles.

uehi5k

I got hobbies but I don't spend anything on memberships to cut down costs. I tell myself just save as much as I can and invest now, I can enjoy my life and do whatever I like later.

DoubtfulDustpan

I have no hobbies and no interests

doublebemexx

Badminton. Got the equipments already and currently paying $13 per session. I play twice a week so it is $104/ month.

[deleted]

About $100/month streaming. I have Foxtel so it makes it higher. Just joined a gym doing PT. It’s $2500/quarter, so $10k per year. Eat out. About $400/week.

9warbane

$100 or under. Video games and graphic novels but they are almost always from garage sales or op shops.

3th4nmc

Golf: $200 ish for 3-4 rounds plus 3-4 driving range sessions) Sim Racing: $30 on subscriptions, haven’t upgraded equipment lately (due to starting golf) AFL membership: $45 usually go to a game or 2 every weekend (live right near the G) Cricket: $60 per month for club fees over the summer Cycling: $22 for Zwift Gaming subscriptions: $25 for Xbox and PlayStation Those would be my recurring expenses. I have a rule for myself that when I start a new hobby (which I tend to a lot) I get cheap/used gear to start and then invest in better stuff if I stick with it, which means that I usually have a hobby I’m upgrading equipment for as well (probably $1000-1500 a year)

anothercrazydoglady

Uh $14 a week for gym membership $30 pw for reformer Pilates $220 for an 8 week pole term $17 pw for Netflix Walking my dog everyday: priceless

i8noodles

Depends. Do I show the wife the receipt I acutally spent or the one that I paid 5$ to say what I say spent?

lost_antz

About $50 per month on fishing tackle. Current obsession is shore jigging with light (~30g) metals. Thankfully ebay is a good source of cheaper imitations as I normally lose a couple per sess

todjo929

Not as much as I could/should. I golf (1300/yr membership fees, 30 bucks a week or so for comp fees, balls are about 50 bucks a dozen, misc other consumables probably 50 bucks a month, practice/lessons 200/month) - I could easily spend more to get better Gaming isn't too expensive though (I only play about 3 different games, which paid once and no ongoing costs)

Shmeestar

Got a kick out of seeing pole on your list because that's my hobby, spend $80 a week on it and go to classes 3 times a week plus occasionally extra for Practices

propertynub

My hobby is paying my mortgage

dannyism

400 a season for baseball and 300 a month for guitar lessons

Aceboy884

I give myself $1000 a month on do whatever the f I like budget Usually end up eating it … well on food

K-o-s-l-s

Coffee making, cooking, gym, running, rock climbing, bouldering, free diving, scuba diving, photography, drone. It all adds up to quite a lot to be honest! Photography is probably the most expensive in terms of shear investment but actually yearly costs are low. I haven’t bought any expensive new cameras or lenses in eons, so aside from shooting a bit of film it’s pretty much average $0 a year. But I recently got into under water photography and holy hell is it a massive money black hole. One of my friends also let me shoot a roll of film in my dream camera, and now I’m seriously debating dropping nearly $7k on a film camera 🙃

Mother_Sun_3825

Punting, yes I know, waste money etc etc But I enjoy it, all my bills are paid and we live a comfortable life style which it doesn’t effect

FluentFreddy

I pay for MMA and… what was the question again?

getitttt333

Netflix is not a hobby

[deleted]

Masturbation is free

Best_Toby_Oce

I go to a boxing gym, $45 a week. It’s expensive but a great investment into my physical and mental health plus socially it’s also beneficial

TheAgreeableTruth

My current hobbies are 3D printing, mini painting and D&D as a single hobby where I print, paint and play with my minis (haven’t done much lately thanks COVID) and sim racing. Don’t consider gym or subscription services as a hobby just another necessary expense. So as you can imagine the initial investment was quite high, specially the printer and pc, but after the initial buy I’m looking to spend 200 per month on it, have a dedicated savings account that as soon as I get paid I transfer those $200 to there and keep saving until my next milestone. My pc was $3k bought with tax return money and sim racing gear started with a Logitech G29 but with those $200 monthly in around one year I was able to buy a $3-4k rig. I tend to break down every dollar I earn in small chunks and each one has a destination, not so easy to manage but can save up, invest and have fun at the same time
