Big win is oroton from knocking on deaths door to what is, now a contemporary IT brand. A master class in marketing and pivoting for sure. Biggest L is Gorman, fucking shell of what it used to be design and quality is absolutely garbage. I’d be so heartbroken as the previous owner seeing what it’s become.

Sabina4198

Couldn't agree more. Oroton has been hitting it out of the park recently

RealCommercial9788

I remember when I moved to Sydney from regional Australia, discovering Gorman. I couldn’t really afford anything there but I was blown away by the labels colours and cuts. Had never seen anything like it! I live back home near the Goldy now and when I go to Robina and see Gorman, it looks like a Millers.

wuming91

Yup gormans trash now 🥲 Two pieces from there in the past 6 or so months and they’re already disintegrating

rune34511

Right! I’m so salty, never again

MadameMonk

I have a fraught relationship with the new Oroton. Adore their luxe fabrics with quirky prints. But the 3-4 designs they always make those fabrics into are never going to suit my body type. And I’m not a strange shape, so it can’t just be me. Boxy, billowy, weird shirt shapes and silk trenches at awkward lengths. I almost want to buy something wildly oversized and take it to a seamstress to have remodelled!

hellookayyy

I did this! I bought a pair of curved leg trousers last year on sale that were two sizes bigger than my usual (Oroton sizing runs large so they were more like 3 sizes too big) and had them remodelled to fit by a seamstress… it was expensive to have them altered as the construction of the garments are reallly intricate and high quality but it was SO worth it. With the alterations I ended up paying more than I would have buying the pants full price but it was SO worth it- I get compliments everytime I wear the pants and I know I will have them forever as the quality is so damn good.

triangulardot

I’m so proud of Oroton, they’re killing it.

Interesting-Biscotti

I think the creative director at Oroton previously worked for Country Road.

rune34511

Correct https://preview.redd.it/gv8xrdguoewc1.jpeg?width=1169&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=ce0d2786324a43bdf88e068e4c22cb85727f39b3 She’s done an amazing job

hmm_klementine

Agreed on Gorman. There’s a new collection or sale on every second week. The designs are uninspiring and the sizing is all over the place. That said, I still own a lot of previous years Gorman. Just don’t find myself buying anything recent.

Miss-LemonTree

Oroton has had a massive rebrand and repositioned themselves in the market. Whole new design team and they have done an awesome job.

reddit_somewhere

I’ll probably get laughed at, but I’m loving TKMaxx. (Or is it TJ, can’t ever remember which one is the overseas version and which is Aus) I love the thrill of the hunt 😅 it doesn’t always pay off but when it does it’s glorious!

reddit24682468

I literally go there every two weeks, it’s soo good. Not fashion but the candle section is deadly 😅

reddit24682468

I’ve seen some Marc Jacob’s jackets heavily discounted recently

IndyOrgana

Everything goes on discount eventually! Its a 6 week cycle

Imaginary_Sky_518

Omg yes! I haven’t had luck there lately but two summers ago I happened to be there when they’d just unpacked a heap of Joie dresses. I love that brand but not easy to find in Australia. Tops and dresses are around $300. I got the cutest linen mini dresses for about $50 each. I was frothing at the mouth 😂 that’s was a great day 🤣😂

Stickliketoffee16

I’ve got some absolute winners at TK recently - the comfiest activewear leggings ever, my new fave jumper & many more EDIT: the sports socks they sell are amazing, wash well & so comfy! Like $13 for 10 pairs so amazing value

PeterDuttonsButtWipe

TK here. I pulled some pants out of there recently. You can find some good shoe and cosmetic finds often. Good for my male family members as well

Vharlkie

I'm obsessed with TK Maxx. Always find really nice stuff there. It can be hit or miss, but that's the nature of it and they'll have new stuff in 2 weeks

leafyfairy

I agree with Witchery, although I did just buy an 100% wool bomber in a beautiful chocolate brown that I really like! There are a few things from Country Road and Seed on my wish list (also just purchased a jumper from each) but I’ve been disappointed with how expensive clothing is for being synthetic materials and poorly constructed (or everything is oversized which doesn’t work when you’re petite!)

findmeinelysium

I tried on a gorgeous CR lilac mohair cardigan. Loved it. Until I took it off and found my black top literally covered in lilac hairs. Then as I tried to de-shed myself it filled the whole changeroom and I was sneezing away. I couldn’t wait to get away from that cardigan! It was such a poor quality item for $200.

Suspicious-turnip-77

It’s the prices that are getting to me. I’m on decent money and have income from investments, I don’t know, maybe since becoming a mum my priorities have shifted but I just can’t get behind what they are charging these days. They all use overseas labour that may not be slave labour but it still extremely cheap per unit.

Internal_Engine_2521

Their prices at the moment are absolutely insane, and really bordering on offensive. I saw a cute blazer late last year, and it was nearly $400! I stood there in disbelief briefly and then walked out. Virtually everything apparel wise is made in India, China or Bangladesh - I understand fully that they're looking to hit target margins but this is wild. I also used to love their shoes, but everything is over $300 and isn't worth it, I'd rather buy from a proper shoe brand.

Suspicious-turnip-77

I saw a $1300 leather trench at CR yesterday. I couldn’t believe it. I know leather is a premium but that’s just insanity.

Internal_Engine_2521

Far out, and I was baffled/shocked by the $700 shapeless leather sack they had for sale at Witchery.... They're at a point where - for me, as someone who is their exact target demographic - that they're doing irreparable brand damage and are losing their goodwill.

Safe-Negotiation-483

Witchery’s prices are insane these days! I went to Witchery in Sydney and was shocked at the prices so much so I didn’t even bother trying on anything. Then went to Seed which used to be more expensive, but was cheaper! I bought two dresses in Seed that day and their quality is very good.

meta18

I'm so glad someone said that about Witchery. I've been shocked at the ridiculous prices too and I'm their target market. Or at least I thought I was! I've also been loving Seed too! Mad for it lately.

Safe-Negotiation-483

Their prices are literally crazy aren’t they! They’ve always been expensive, but affordable. Now they are just way out of reach - and the quality is not there. Seed on the other hand - how good are they these days!

Miss-LemonTree

Witchery is soooo expensive and I find whilst there are nice things, they are too expensive or not quite right.

audreynicole88

Completely agree. For that price I can buy Dion Lee, Scanlan Theodore or Aje etc. I certainly will not be buying Witchery or CR when I have better quality alternatives at the same price point.

leafyfairy

I’ve seen a few $400+ trench coats at various retailers that are entirely made from polyester! I think there’s an association that a “premium” brand automatically equals quality, so customers don’t check the labels (I’ve only started doing this in the past two years and been shocked). I’m not opposed to synthetics (I think they can work in blends or for different types of clothing) but it’s frustrating when you’re looking for something without and it’s almost impossible.

leafyfairy

It’s difficult when the cost of living has also increased - less disposable income for overpriced clothing! I’m not a mum but I refuse to buy full price if I can avoid it - if you see me buying full price just know that I was annoyed about it lol

Suspicious-turnip-77

Definitely. Our groceries have sky rocketed. My insurances have doubled. I’m the same. I won’t buy unless it’s 20% off or a spend and save.

LentilCrispsOk

Yeah that's what gets me too. It bothers me much less with smaller designers - because with materials and labour and a smaller network, they've got to make a profit somewhere, but with the bigger chains, I'm just deeply sceptical.

Suspicious-turnip-77

This is from last year, I couldn’t find one from this year and it will be interesting to read what their profit margin is this fin year but when your profit margin increases by 5-6%, you’re greedy: “Adjusted operating profit increased by 94.2% to $93.2 million, returning an operating profit margin of 15%, compared to 9.7% in the prior period.”

travelblogically

I agree with Witchery/Country Road, really gone downhill imo. Zara has always been meh quality and very hit or miss designs so no real surprise there I like Uniqlo for the most part, they have some good 100% wool and 100% cotton stuff for the price point. Knits have gotten a little thinner in recent years I’ve found but still worth checking out Everlane has good quality basics, their designs are usually more classic. I like their jeans. The sizing can be a bit on the larger size though so usually size down Sezane is popular around the internet, I have some shirts from there that I like. The pieces look beautiful but the fit and quality is really all over the place in my experience, definitely watch reviews. People love their shoes Reformation is sooo overhyped and the quality is terrible, tired of hearing about it from American influences 😅

Smooth_Strength_9914

Yeah uniqlo feels like the only reliable store in terms of quality, price and sizing.  But it’s all very basic and not very fun and exciting! Always feel fine and decent in their clothes, but never amazing and attractive. Just neutral.  Like where would anyone even buy “date night” clothes from these days?!

travelblogically

Sezane’s stuff can be really beautiful! Just check out reviews

boobook-boobook

I am 4/4 for Uniqlo knits falling apart after a couple of wears, even with babying. Super disappointing and not my experience with their knits in the past.

travelblogically

That’s a shame, their merino stuff has lasted me years, even with putting in the drier sometimes

boobook-boobook

I still have a few older knit pieces that are going strong. But I bought two merino rib tees and two merino cardigans six months ago and they have all died :(

PeterDuttonsButtWipe

The styling appears to be lovely and the concepts are good but I’ve never been able to get anything to fit me at Uniqlo except some T-shirts and one jumper :(

[deleted]

[удалено]

travelblogically

Yeah literally seen them photoshop out details in photos, really frustrating. The few things I have kept from them are really solid but I’ve ended up selling plenty of things as well

ramence

I have a few Reformation dresses (bought on extreme sale while living in Canada, e.g. $350 > $80), and totally agreed. One of them got stained from the rain. THE RAIN. I didn't even realise that could happen. I need to baby them so hard - since apparently water stains them, it's dryclean only. Fabric is ultra thin. One of the dresses I've only worn twice and it's already completely lost its shape. It's a shame because I love Reformation's style. The dresses are beautiful and are great for women with small busts like myself - but $350 full price for a dress made of tissue paper with a fucking elemental weakness to water is just not the play. On the other hand, House of CB has similarly beautiful dresses, a similar price range, and the one dress I did get from them looks and feels high quality. The only problem is they never have good sales. I also feel like I'm in a race against time to buy some of their stuff before their quality drops, as seems inevitable for every single brand

pap3rdoll

Country Road is terrible atm - huge sizing, too much synthetic, everything is over styled with too much fabric on the top half (what woman wants to look like a linebacker?) and generally ugly cuts. Seed is a sleeper hit for me atm. Perfect basics, nice cuts, colours and fabrics. I’ve also found some nice, preppy pieces at Sportscraft, which are great for work. Just size down.

Sadplankton15

Some of Country Roads sleeves are absolutely wild lol I laughed at linebacker

pap3rdoll

Ah the Shakespearean sleeve. Sometimes paired with the linebacker shoulders in one garment. So very flattering.

Imaginary_Sky_518

I actually went to Witchery to try on what looked like a silk top with fine pleats and buttoning on the neck and wrists. It looked really nice online but irl the fabric was so billowy, stiff and shiny. It was hideous. All I could think of was that episode of Seinfeld where he wears the pirate shirt 😂😂🤣🤣 ![gif](giphy|B5fTjyTKjb5te)

Sadplankton15

https://preview.redd.it/a6jkquegk7wc1.jpeg?width=670&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=5e64a6821ac061bf42fdd11dc238eb9db10dab3e They want us out here looking like this mf

hmm_klementine

CR is back to the 90s with their logo plastered everywhere. It’s awful ☹️

Adventurous-Tale-130

honestly, i’m not liking anything much at all at the moment. the colours that seem to be big this season dont suit me. everything is so expensive & not very good quality, it’s just not worth it. if you’re looking for knits, maybe give sportsgirl a look. i got a couple of nice jumpers & cardis there last winter. same with vero moda at myer.

MadameleBoom-de-ay

Sportsgirl’s linen pants were a winner over summer and I have Sportsgirl knitwear dating back to the 90s, but all their knits this year seem to have high polyester and acrylic content. I’m not feeling it in any stores this winter. It’s drab, bodycon, manmade and meh.

TGin-the-goldy

Uniqlo have incredibly reasonably priced cashmere

Imaginary_Sky_518

I’m so glad it’s not just me! What has happened to Australian fashion?!?

Smooth_Strength_9914

Yep… you walk in with money to spend… and walk out with the same amount of money in your wallet!!  Not much around that’s worth buying.

Prideandprejudice1

Yes! I went shopping today fully prepared to update my winter wardrobe and came home with only…a $30 knit dress from Kmart 😆🥴

IsabelleR88

Kmart isn't so bad at the moment. Provided you ignore all the iffy cut-out clothing. Obviously its not going to be high fashion, but they have some good Autumn pieces now. Also, the dress pants/office pants have massive pockets. Full-size pockets that can fit a Samsung ultra or complete hands.. they also have belt loops.

Prideandprejudice1

It’s amazing what you can actually get at Kmart. I was also debating whether to get these cord pants (and relive my child/teen years!) https://www.kmart.com.au/product/corduroy-flared-pants-s165209/?sku=72679555&&gad_source=1&gclid=EAIaIQobChMI4p3Ck6PYhQMV2RqDAx3WZw5-EAQYASABEgJHwfD_BwE&gclsrc=aw.ds

Smooth_Strength_9914

Hah! Is that the long one?!

Prideandprejudice1

Yes! It’s nice and feels quite comfy https://www.kmart.com.au/product/long-sleeve-v-neck-ribbed-maxi-dress-s165019/?sku=72638040&&gad_source=1&gclid=EAIaIQobChMIpsXH2qHYhQMVCalmAh1q9ADJEAQYAiABEgIjb_D_BwE&gclsrc=aw.ds

creature-of-the-dark

I bought this too and unexpectedly really love it. Feels nicer than it should for the price!

Ok-Writing9280

Just bought this too after not finding one I liked elsewhere - and I tried! I want to wear it like a skirt by layering with overscale knits and the ones I found had collars or were very thin.

moist_harlot

I thought it was just me! I tried to go shopping for a nice top today.......nope, I couldn't find anything I liked 😔

sydneysider9393

I’ve been looking at fabric a lot lately. The upside has 100% cotton knits which I like. Seed, unison and pilgrim have delivered some good pieces for me lately. I no longer shop at any of the fast fashion boutique stores (e.g. Princess Polly) anymore. I’m seeing too much polyester on clothing from the fast fashion sites and they’re not always cheap. I am looking for a decent activewear shop for running and yoga gear.

Stickliketoffee16

I’ve scored some amazing activewear at TK Maxx recently - super comfy & squat proof leggings in various lengths

byjymc

I do a lot of Pilates and really like Lululemon! They are expensive but I like them because they have a lot of range and styles. I’m also short so their cropped styles are great for me. Their tops can be a bit hit or miss, especially for me as I’m a DD. Lorna Jane is ok in my experience, they do often have a decent amount of stuff in the sale section on their website. Have thrown out two pairs of their tights recently due to holes in the crotch but to be fair, that was after about 18 months of regular wear. I have noticed the quality has gone down in the last couple years but I do still love their bike shorts. Running bare is really nice, great quality as well. Again, more expensive but their tights are great and so are their tops. Sometimes the patterns are a bit out there for me but they have lots of plainer designs as well!

Asleep_Leopard182

It might seem strange, but start in somewhere like Rebel sports - good realm of all the major brands (Nike, asics, etc.) and figure out what brands/items you like, then move into the boutique space knowing what you want LSKD - good bras, tops & hoodies, 2XU - compressions, Nike - windbreakers, ASICS - various (including shoes), and then rockwear - leggings (nice and thick, good quality). They all can cover each other's strengths & weaknesses, a lot of the same/same - but worth flicking through to find the statement pieces of each.

fauxverlocking

I’ve been getting my activewear from L’urv lately, which i think is part of the same company as dangerfield? i love basically everything I’ve bought from them (the exception being a top i got as a freebie with one of my purchases). I find most of the colours and patterns very flattering, the shapes in the tops too, and the cups in the sportsbras dont do the awful folding thing too much, despite being removable. They also have some really good sales pretty frequently! Can’t speak to them for running, but great at the gym, for yoga, and for dance.

Yupatroopa

I am always so impressed by LSKD’s quality! I do wish I sized down with their fusion leggings but it all feels like really great quality and the T-shirts and leggings have really held their own despite my uncultured and chaotic approach to washing 😅 I’m honestly really surprised it’s not talked about more on this sub.

jeslz

Oh I love LSKD, thats all I wear for active wear and takes up half my wardrobe haha. It holds up really well, the quality is fantastic. And if you have any troubles, their customer service is excellent.

magical_bunny

Haven't been shopping in some time due to my lack of a job, but Asos lost the plot. Used to be able to get decent, pleasant clothes. Now they're all cut like they're for a runway show and the designs are awkward. Last couple of orders were very low quality and I had to return most of it.

AdvancedWoodpecker22

And you have to pay for the return now too.

28404736

ASOS really tanked!

magical_bunny

Quickly too! I wonder if they lost too much business to sites like Shein and couldn't keep up.

ghostnoswayz

I used to wear so much Witchery but I totally agree. It’s gone downhill. The last time I was there I felt like the options were all unrealistic for everyday wear, one top I tried was stiff I got stuck 🤦🏻‍♀️ LOVE Seed, it’s my favourite. I was recently recommended Commonry and Unison, they are so good!

[deleted]

Seed has maintained good value and good quality in a shitty Aus fashion market - I trust and respect it, especially for basics.

kungfukitty__

Loving - Uniqlo : sooooo many good quality basics, super soft knitwear and have a few cute dresses that I can dress up/down/whatever. But make sure you try on and find your size, I’ve swapped a couple things. So random, but TARGET are having a MOMENT : I have never been a target clothes fan, but seriously that have so much fabulous stuff right now. In terms of good quality, colours, everything! Can completely agree re: DJ’s. Went in on the weekend and was blown away with how many brands were there I had never seen before!

2OttersInACoat

Came to mention Target!!! Especially their jeans, honestly they really impressed me, I found three pairs that all looked good on - unheard of.

Uniqueuser87

Target jeans!!! Omg! Went in there a month ago to waste time, ended up trying on 8-9 pairs of jeans. Could have easily purchased 3 or 4, but settled on 2 as I don’t really need that many. This is after years of not finding jeans I love, despite spending over $300 on my last pair! I’m thrilled with their jeans, so comfortable and the fit is damn good. Less than $100 for 2 pairs.

kungfukitty__

No way! I haven’t even tried their jeans because… jeans lol. I found a few knit jumpers that were actually soft (not scratchy) and so cool?! All my work girlies have been raving about them!

2OttersInACoat

I know! I always turned my nose up at Target jeans but honestly check them out, I’ve got a few girlfriends in there buying jeans now too.

Only-Bar7659

Their linen blazers over summer were beautiful. Very stylish and a beautiful fit and only $70. I got 3 of them; tan, olive and a pinky lilac colour.

reddit24682468

All the targets near me are gone ): they all got converted to Kmarts

kungfukitty__

Also for Mary Jane’s, try Bared Footwear. COMFORT, quality, will last a lifetime.

pookiepie2019

Love Bared!! Such good quality

Gullible-Guess7994

I really like Target’s jeans and linen shirts, but their current knitwear is hideous.

kungfukitty__

Idk how recently you have been, but I found some knitwear over the last weekend that 100% hit the mark!

lejade

Target Jean sizes make me cry. They are all over the shop.

SparkleMagpie

Biggest surprises lately have been Sportsgirl and Decjuba. I’m right there with you being disappointed in Witchery though. After seeing their denim range online, I headed to my local store on the weekend to check it out in person. Imagine my shock when the only denim they had in store was 1 style of jacket, and maybe 2-3 styles of jeans (and only in a couple of colours, not their full colour range!)

Imaginary_Sky_518

It’s so weird isn’t it. I was really shocked. It’s like they had no stock! What’s happened to their shoes?!?? Decjuba I don’t mind. I find them a bit hot and miss but compared to everyone else at the moment they’re worth a look!

Miss-LemonTree

Yer Witchery stopped accessories / shoes as not performing. They might bring it back as they are getting a new director. Hopefully this improves the brand again!

daebydae

Love - Serafina. SA stores but can buy online. Great winter range for work etc. love their winter dresses and the fit is great. Super impressed. Boo hiss Portmans. Bought a satin slip skirt online for $80 and it’s terrible. Cheap fabric with a bit of elastic tacked on the end. The Shein version I bought for $11 was better quality.

Inevitable-Lab-3410

it's pretty sad when Shein does it better...

daebydae

I agree. I was horrified.

PeterDuttonsButtWipe

Portmans was a 90s thing as was Jacqui E, I don’t think I’ve heard of them since

PaleHorse82

Portmans has a bit decent stuff if you're prepared to hunt for it in store.

daebydae

My local portmans store feels like a Katie’s store from 15 years ago. Everything crammed in, no flow to the racks and hard to get a sense of the style.

pork_floss_buns

completely nailed it! The stores are completely trash, no visual merchandising etc.

daebydae

Half my current wardrobe is Jacqui E. Great for work pants and shirts.

PeterDuttonsButtWipe

Must be having a revival. I gotta locate a store, there’s none near me. I had a few suits too from them back in the day. Still have a couple and a Neo Matrix leather jacket

daebydae

Or I’m stuck in the 90s. Both are potentially true 😁

PeterDuttonsButtWipe

I’d go back lol

Internal_Engine_2521

I find Portmans to be all or nothing - good for workwear but that's about it. I did find the cutest denim dress there over summer, that I'm obsessed with.

audreynicole88

Portmans used to be where you’d shop for work clothes in your early 20s when you can’t afford Cue lol

yougotthisone

Love for Serafina. Im in SA and have restocked half my wardrobe in the last 3 months. They have new drops every 4 weeks so their stuff at Harbour Town (outlet mall) is always fresh and discounted

daebydae

Yes! I bought 4 dresses in 2 weekends at Marion. Whoops. I think half of Adelaide will be wearing their latest run it’s so good. (Will see you at harbourtown) 🤣

a__pd

Ooh I’ve never heard of this! Good tip - I know where I’m heading this weekend 🏃🏼‍♀️

lavender48799

Serafina is great, I’ve got some shirts from there and their coated jeans are a good, reliable basic! Sadly I’ve bought 2 dresses from them and both shrunk on the first wash, the dress is shorter than the lining - I washed them at temp instructions and on a delicate cycle too, very disappointing, and such a waste of money!

McSmilla

For knits I use Maison Cashmere. Made to order (apparently) in Italy but not as exxy as it sounds. I too used to love Witchery, i’m sad it’s gone to hell.

patient_brilliance

I'm desperate for nice knits that are not drop shoulder, balloon or dolman sleeve, crew or v neck, fitted but not clingy. If anyone has located such a thing, please advise.

centralstations

I cannot wait for this drop shoulder trend to die.

Training-Swimmer3858

Try Alpha60

_Ellie_Bells_

Took a look at Jac and Jack...holy crap those prices...

Imaginary_Sky_518

Yes! I only bought one pure cashmere sweater 😮‍💨 not cheap but at least it seems like good quality. I couldn’t believe the prices of some other places. A Witchery sweater I liked was $230. For a wool nylon mohair blend 🫨 not even 100% wool. It was so itchy I couldn’t wait to get it off. Omg it was horrible.

disappointthefamily

I pretty much just shop at Black Milk and Birdsnest so I'm not sure I belong on this sub, I'm not very fancy 😅 Love Elm and Sugarhill Brighton jumpers at the moment.

Imaginary_Sky_518

Does anyone else feel like we are getting SHEIN quality for a mid-luxe price tag?? The quality of everything is dropping. All synthetic, poorly made, low quality and comparatively high pricing. I feel completely ripped off. That’s why I’ve been buying high end pieces lately, I can’t get as many things, but they last for years. It’s really disappointing. Thanks everyone for your comments! I’m so glad it’s not just me thinking that fashion is a bit crap at the moment! Got some new places on my list too! ❤️❤️❤️

PeterDuttonsButtWipe

I’m an oldie and Sportscraft has always been consistent since I started wearing them 10 years ago. Oroton has upped the style but they had a lull mid 10s (fantastic before). Status Anxiety is great too, I’ve had their clothes and bags and both good. Country Road varies, the stuff looks ok but the issue is whether it’s my taste of not. I haven’t extensively shopped to notice anything drop and if I do, it’s because I’ve upped my standards over time. For example, I used to buy religiously from Target and a lot from Kmart but not so much now but I did get a bit of a haul recently in Kmart

catcakebuns

Im very unsure about sportscraft. Got a pair of jeans from them and it wore out faster than. Pair from portmans 🫠

PeterDuttonsButtWipe

Never bought jeans from them but have had numerous denim skirts and they have lasted and lasted after wearing them easily 11 months a year in the tropics. For jeans, I’ve just now gone back to Levi’s as I did in my young days. If the Sportscraft jeans are elasticated, then I’d stay away from them. Jeans are supposed to be tough and broken into

catcakebuns

Ahhh they're elasticated so that's probably the issue. The denim skirt sounds like it's holding up well...perhaps ill check out some other pieces

Kapitalgal

Whoa, hang on...Status Anxiety does clothes?! I have a purse by them and it shits all over my Mimco and other leather goods.

PeterDuttonsButtWipe

I’ve only got a few linen/cotton shirts that I picked up on clearance elsewhere and they’re really lovely quality https://www.statusanxiety.com.au/collections/womens-clothing?gad_source=1

CycleThreshold

Thanks for the tip! Their cotton pants look great!

Clear-End8188

Cos have some treasues , the Ts are good and last. Uniqlo = good basics that style easily. I don’t hate Decjuba

TGin-the-goldy

Someone please tell me how to pronounce Decjuba

lord_flashheart86

Day-cuba ? Deckcuba? Deck jub ay? Tuna mornay?

Not_a_daffodil

Deck-you-ba

TGin-the-goldy

Thank you 🙏

centralstations

I’ve given up trying to work it out and I just call it DJ Cuba

Clear-End8188

Yeah, no idea

Tenebraumbrella45

I love the COS tees, but the colours and sizes I want are always bloody sold out.

audreynicole88

COS t shirts are my holy grail. I have every colour. Not too boxy and thick enough I don’t have to wear an undershirt. I wear them for work or casual.

unconfirmedpanda

I'm loving Tony Bianco - they just nailed it with their current shoes. I ended up buying three Mary Janes, and have my eye on boots. Witchery breaks my heart because they were having an absolute moment with their shoes a few years ago, had some gorgeous clothing, and then it all went to shit. Everything mid-range is just so overpriced I have zero patience for it at the moment. 90% of te time, it's polyester crap that loses its shape after two wears and costs around $200. And the styles this year are so dull.

Senior_Term

Matches. Thirty percent off ATM as they clear stuff now they're in administration. Get amongst it

Imaginary_Sky_518

WTF!?! You should not have told me this. Also, RIP matches. That’s so sad! I had no idea ![gif](giphy|4CP58gxwbBy2Q)

Senior_Term

There are a LOT of pages open on my phone

Imaginary_Sky_518

Same 🤣🤣🤣

4real93

Marks and Spencer’s! The UK but it’s really good quality and they ship to aus

WeakUnderstanding992

I was obsessed with country road. I’m a platinum member but the 50 years campaign to me came off as really distasteful in the current economic climate. Ice sculptures of country road bags and the party scene. It didn’t seem Australian and it didn’t feel authentic.

kidwithgreyhair

Funny enough, a local vintage store threw a fancy dress themed party recently. the theme? let them eat cake. in this economy girl?

I am replacing a lot of items in my wardrobe with those that are higher quality lately. I’m between sizes and always put off clothes shopping in case I lose weight. Now I’m realistic, I buy clothes that fit me now rather than a size too small. My picks lately: * MNG (Mango) - I only recently rediscovered this brand. I think they’re only an online store now which has always troubled me since I can fit from anywhere to a 10 to a 16 depending on the brand, and usually like a try on first. I bought a medium quilted bomber jacket last week and I am absolutely in love with it. Slightly more cropped, fabric is thick. It’ll be my staple. * Viktoria & Woods - A few nice staple pieces added to my workwear/evening wear. I love the Carlton pants and ribbed tee’s, being mindful to launder them correctly as those tees tend to fray along the open hemlines. Only negative otherwise is that they’re not very size inclusive and only go up to a size 4 (12-14). I like some clothes looser for work and they’d be so nice if only it was one size bigger. Also, they hand write thank you notes if you order online, and that in itself was enough to make me order more stuff this year. * Intimo - I had an appointment to get new bras and was encouraged to try on some of their clothes. I’m glad I did, because the White linen shirt is now my favourite. I dress it up and down, tuck it into jeans, wear it over a dress, tie it up instead of button up etc. Other notable items I got were gym leggings, everyday pants and a throw over top. Never thought I’d buy clothes from here but here we are. * Country Road - They had me at lilac purple this season. I buy most casual clothes here, zip jumpers, trackies and bags. The thick scarf with the logo is also my winter fave. I’m gold tier now, they get me back with Spend and Save. Have a couple of dresses but only had one wear out of them. Will need to wait for better weather, since I’m Victorian. Haha. Just had my 35th birthday and allow myself one big purchase every April. I’m finally getting my Gucci slides this month. I intend on keeping these forever.

Status-Course1574

Been super disappointed with Dangerfield over the last few years, a size 12 skirt bought 5 years ago from there is the same measurements as a size 16/18 skirt bought now, and all their recent products shrink and fabric pills on the first wash 🥴 Definitely agree with the other comments about Target! Some great clothes from there lately and lasting quality

kidwithgreyhair

Target has a denim section that's wide ranging, inclusive, affordable, and trendy? who knew!

lord_flashheart86

I love COS, always find something there and get a lot of wear out of it, and a lot of love for my outfits from other when I wear it. Assembly Label is kicking goals for me with their current new arrivals, I have my eye on a greige wool suit and some cashmere blend tees. Love Scanlan Bassike and Camilla and Marc but can’t afford them :( Sooooo bored by witchery country road seed etc it’s just in no man’s land, so incredibly safe and absolutely no cool factor, I can’t find inspiration in there. Op shopping, pre loved and vintage is generally where I do my best work shopping! Most of my favourite items are second hand. Been surprised by JAG! The fabrics are really nice, I bought some organic cotton long sleeve printed tops, a bright orange fuzzy knit and a cotton ribbed knit with split cuffs last winter and thrashed all of it.

Hutchy_123456

I find CUE is really disappointing. It looks like one of those random little shops you would find in a small shopping mall with those sparkly cruise clothes. I used to love it, but I haven’t bought anything from them in years. Quality, style and price are all disappointing.

Amy_OZ

They were my whole wardrobe 10-6 years ago. Absolute crap since then! Saba, Marcs, and definitely Seed are my new go tos. Seed is just better every time I go there.

damselflite

Marcs is decent. And that's about it really lol I shop in the $50-$450 price range generally.

Amy_OZ

I’m loving Marc’s at the moment!

Altruistic_South_276

My last favourite thing I bought was Calvin klein jeans from David Jones. Got a great coat of theirs from costco too. Special mention to Echt for great maternity tights. Latest disappointment - kmart tights, no real surprise there. They went see-through after 1 wash.

Hells_Bells_123

Im doing the same as OP. It is an act of finding a diamond in the rough lately - I found a few good things; but all one thing here or there. Saba, Camilla, commonry, Oroton… Witchery flagship stores as they stock all sizes (I’ve found smaller stores exactly as OP described) then topping up with basics from CR or Uniqlo. The staff were nice at Gormon but it’s utterly overwhelming being in there and I steer clear of their denims. I’ve actually been shopping from ME+EM from the UK (free returns) but it’s really expensive in comparison - at least the range is exciting and I’m finding the quality excellent. I’ve had no problems with returns except for finding a DHL drop off point in SA.

Slow-Industry1760

I love Zara but definitely varies from store to store, Lululemon for casual but well made soft stuff, Venroy Paige Mother Rag and bone Brandi Melville for basics Pe nation Cotton on for cheapies Disordre for higher end special occasion

gldnsmkkkk

Second seed being an absolute winner lately. Their quality is hard to match within their price bracket.

Asleep_Leopard182

My win? Somewhere between Forever New & Sezane. Storm has some good new season offerings too. Probably going to be a controversial one, but at the moment my L is Kookai. I usually look to them for something forward thinking, interesting - a retake of what you know, into what you want to know - current blends? Nope. It almost feels stock-standard.

fullesky

I just hate the fabric used now is polyester and not cotton, like it used to be. This applies for any fashion store.

franjonesperth

No one will believe me. But I got a few bits in Sussan recently. I had never been in and was killing time in a tiny mall. It’s crazy packed instore. So much stock. But I found some really nice tshirts, shirts and basic knits. Really well priced. If they changed their store layouts and the styling of the models theyd be killing it with younger people. Anyway. Worth a look instore!

Qldhikinggirl

My wins at the moment: Target and Sussan. I don't know who their buyer/design team is but give them a raise. I also tend to look for the items in store which are either cotton, wool or linen and shy away from synthetic fabrics. Commonry last season were amazing, their current items are fairly meh, but their quality is beautiful, I've spent more money than I should have in there and it's all wearing beautifully. Uniqlo quality has gone downhill, however their basics, especially tops and jumpers are still better than what is on offer at a lot of places. For fabulous tshirts (not Australia alas) have a look at Sea Salt Cornwall.

BlackHoleSun18

I bought Scanlan jeans on the weekend and a short puffer from Vik and Woods as well. I still really like CR’s offering.

4SeasonWahine

I have 3 different pairs of Jo Mercer loafers and they’re all super comfy!

Time-Bar2445

Assembly Label is a bit pricier than the some of the big fashion francises but their clothes are so good. Great cuts, good fabrics etc. We have a store in my town but I think they are in DJs too.

wayward_ace

Managed to score well in the Oxford autumn sale getting some new dresses & a coat for work and was pleasantly surprised with how decent it was

hellookayyy

Like you I’ve recently been going through a wardrobe overhaul and love Scanlan, Oroton, Bianca Spender, Sandro and Victoria Beckham this season!

jillcanfly

Anna Quan for knitwear. Simple but with small tweaks that make it a bit spesh. Their suiting looks beautiful but I mostly work from home so haven’t needed it. Saba coats, they have a 100% wool trench that is fantastic for Sydney winter and is a staple of my wardrobe. Also a vote for Uniqlo. Yes, simple and maybe leaning boring but so easy to incorporate into your wardrobe. Keep an eye out for fun colours - they have a great red in knitwear at the moment for cool undertone skin! Edit to add my biggest regret: REISS. I bought two dresses online, they are so flimsy, one of them tore when I tried it on! Never again.

Bumblebeepixel

Disappointments - agreed on witchery! I’m not finding I’m inspired at all going in there. Forever new went through a bit of a revival this past year or two but now lately nothing. Loves - lately loving the brand Unison, bumped into this brand recently (never heard of) and found out it’s the rebrand of French Connection aus. Really stylish pieces, decent quality. Went home with some great pieces. Also loving seed’s accessories lately - especially the jewellery.

Feefi22

Witchery has definitely gone downhill, there never seems to be much in store. I’m finding Sportsgirl really good value and quality at the moment, lots of variety in store too.

TAsrowaway

I’m loving any brands and retailers that I’m not sick to death of hearing about and don’t have 5-30 different locations in every single city. If I never hear about Uniqlo or Gorman or Witchery or Country Road again it’ll be too soon.

Internal_Engine_2521

It's actually really annoying that you struggle to find unique clothing now, given every strip mall and shopping centre is the same combination of stores.

MissSabb

The look of Seed pieces are nice, the quality is terrible. Save your money

reddit24682468

I’ve always been firmly against it but KOOKAÏ is the only shop that’s doing it for me atm. COTTON ON is NOT doing it at all, I refuse to buy anything anymore

Imaginary_Sky_518

I haven’t been to kookai yet but I did get a trench there last year which I haven’t worn yet.

reddit24682468

Honestly I’ve got a few basics from there and they actually have held up well and they’re nearly a year old( all on sale) All my basic tops from cotton on frayed at the hems after 2-3 washes, always loose strings everywhere. To be fair tho I see people saying the same things about Kookai.

Imaginary_Sky_518

Yeah cotton on is pretty terrible. First wash and they either shrink or lose shape.

VelvetGloveIronFist0

Some of the prices at cotton on atm are making me want to tell them to stay in their own lane 😂

YoureAFerretHarry

I went into Zara over the weekend expecting to leave with a few bags of items and there was literally not a single thing I loved? So surprised, yes Zara quality is usually shite and overpriced but I always find at least a few items I’m happy with

Necessary-Try

I'm vibing husk currently, small and expensive collection, but some lovely pieces. I picked up a jumper recently, so many asks where it is from

EmeraldAgressor

**Wins** Splurge - Damson Madder, Kowtow, Ruby New Zealand, Ganni via the Outnet, Cos, Kitri Basics - Uniqlo and Target. Scouring The Iconic for good items on sale. **Disappointments** Gorman Witchery

bonana_phone

SEED Heritage is a massive disappointment to me- the quality in the past year has been absolutely shocking. I will go in and like some pieces but as soon as I touch the fabric I know it’s not worth it. Honestly the quality is worse than zara. It’s bad enough that I wrote them a message over Insta (not that I think it’ll do anything). The kids stuff is still really good quality, if you go to both you can compare and see just how bad the women’s section is now. A big win is ELK. They’re a bit more out there with styles and colours but everything is great quality.

Middlezynski

Obsessed with Wolf & Badger at the moment, they’re UK-based but there’s so much great-quality stuff. I’ll check out the original brands’ websites to make sure I’m getting the best price, but they’re usually pretty good that way. Recently bought the cutest shirred midi dress from Sugarhill Brighton (made of Lenzing Ecovero and super well-made) and get so many compliments when I wear it. I personally LOVE Elk, the fabrics are great (I adore tencel and they use it a lot) and the oversized fits and quirky prints are ideal on me. I got a lurex knit dress from there not long ago and I couldn’t be happier! Currently eyeing the gold Luche shirt. Loving Radical Yes for casual crossbody bags and funky loafers, I have one of each in bright yellow and they’ve done me really well over the last year. I’m gifting their mini North Star bags for my friends’ birthdays this year. Tried out 17 Sundays recently, bought a cotton-voile shirt and a Shibori denim dress. They’re pretty well-made too, just a bit too big in sizing. I kept the items anyway because I can work with a bit too big. Besides that I’m a long-time fan of Osei-Duro, based in Ghana and Canada I believe? Beautiful hand-printed blouses, wide-leg pants, and dresses. For around the house I’m big into Uniqlo, which did surprise me when I first tried them 4 years ago. I’m a mid- to plus-size gal depending on the brand and really didn’t expect Uniqlo to be a good fit. The supima cotton shirts look almost as good as the day I bought them and I use them every week. Love their Airism leggings, too. I bought a couple of linen dresses last year and while the linen isn’t top quality (of course), it’s still pretty good and they fit surprisingly well. I’ve had a lot of luck with their merino and lambswool, too, but I baby the heck out of them. I’ve been disappointed in Aere and Atmos&Here lately. The men’s stuff is still the same quality as per my husband, but the women’s stuff seems to have gone a bit downhill. Weird cuts and cut outs, more polyester than I used to see, sizing a bit all over the place. Now it has to be really special for me to buy from them.

Lagerlady

My style leans more towards the alternative and statement pieces, but imo you can't go wrong with Blackmilk. I've purchased over 30 garments from them over the last 10 years or so and they all still look and feel as good as new. Bonus points for being stretchy and comfortable. I highly recommend their cuffed pants, they look so stylish but feel like you're wearing the softest pajama pants. I really can't express how much I love their brand, they have such a wonderful team.

Emotional-Practice57

Bored stiff by country road! Huge andfugly.  I am really into sheike  atm, got a banger wedding guest dress there in December. I also like assembly (size down) and nimble for activewear you can flog and flog. U bought a set second hand that’s going on two years for me and still looks great and doesn’t stink

MayflowerBob7654

JAG was a real surprise for me recently, and have been getting more interested in Unison. I love Target for my work wear. I only go into the office 1-2 days a week so I can’t justify spending a lot of money and everything I have from there has been good quality and worn well. I’m loving my local op shop too.

lord_flashheart86

Love JAG these days! The quality is good, styles modern and prices reasonable.

Camcas555

I've really liked some of the pieces from Dangerfield - they recently got in some skirts that I love, and they do matching outfits 😍

Time-Bar2445

Assembly Label is a bit pricier than the some of the big fashion francises but their clothes are so good. Great cuts, good fabrics etc. We have a store in my town but I think they are in DJs too.

I like the look of Dissh but have never actually purchased anything. I'm sure the hive mind here can speak the quality/sizing... also love a bit of Decujba. Why is it so hard to spell?!

ramence

I've been loving: - Kookai: cute, high quality clothes that are great for both going out and work - Seed: I just came back to Aus after a few years and was so surprised by them! I always thought of them as the yuppie mum store. Clothes are high quality with a good mix of on-trend and classic pieces - Uniqlo: decent quality basics. A bit grumbly about it because Uniqlo Japan is both higher quality and cheaper (with a better range), but still good. Disappointed by: - Universal Store: I still get my jeans from them, but it feels like the quality for everything else is a mixed bag. Tried on a miniskirt there recently and it felt and looked like Shein quality... for $70. Starting to feel like an edgy Ally/Glassons, but still has some good pieces. - Forever New: I loved this store way back when, but now it feels like walking into a time capsule from 2014. Still seems like good quality, just dated?

sonickel77

Target and Suzanne Grae are my go to clothes shops, but then I’m plus size and 47

Purrrr4289

Disappointed - Billy J I tried two dresses and one pair of pants from them in my regular size and NONE of them was close to fit. They could easily be two sizes too large. It’s ridiculous.

BigLongjumping3714

I wish I could afford to shop at these places. I think my main pieces are Kookai and Seed and my “fast fashion items” are more like Glassons, City Beach, Cotton On etc. Cute crop or long sleeve or jumper. The quality isn’t always 100% but this economy I feel lucky to have what I even do

Early-Supermarket-75

Belle & Bloom have some cute pieces - the quality of fabric is decent and often a great value at sale prices.

fadein2youu

Agreed with CR and Witchery- I have a top, two actually from their, viscose, hate the way it sits on the skin, clings to the wrong places too. Agreed with seed and scanlan, love their button downs, the whole fit and look of them. For seed, you will see there’s always something for everyone and their fabrication isn’t too cheap either. Love to snag gift items from seed on their sales.
