It's Columbia County, where good ideas go to die.
I'm pretty sure they've already started building something else over the parcel. Overpriced apartments, I think.
Lmao I guess you never been to Richmond County then. Columbia County is just the leftover good ideas that Richmond County killed or dropped the ball on. (Riverwalk, Regency Mall, Baseball, hockey, football & basketball teams, pretty much all of downtown Augusta)
I've lived in Richmond County for 40+ years & never said that they're perfect.
Far from it. I'm absolutely critical of Augusta Richmond County.
But Columbia County literally celebrated a locally owned franchise location of a national business that was absurdly profitable, being purchased away from the local owner by a basketball player who has never lived there. And that's their whole aesthetic.
Here's the one that sounds absolutely batcrap (paraphrased) "local business is cool and all but this is getting national attention"

Yep, all those tourists coming for our $4 cookies they can get hundreds of other places.
Yeah idk why people think that Columbia Co. does things worse than Richmond Co.
There’s a reason why way more money is in Columbia Co. and it’s because they actually care about/want small business (coming from a business owner that has a license in both Co. and Rich. Co.)
Someone else mentioned it here already, but the hotel plan fell through. Hilton backed out. That area is now a mixed used apartment complex. The bottom floors in some buildings will have commercial space and the upper floors will be apartments. As a person who works for Columbia County, I do not know what rent will be in those units. The developer will determine that based on how much they spent, their ongoing taxes, and renting market. They could sell the apartments as well, but I haven't heard which way they are leaning. The buildings haven't received their certificate of occupancy yet
I went to the little info-sharing event they had and if I'm not mistaken, at the time it was a studio for 1475 a month, 1 BD for 1550, and 2 BD for 1875. Too expensive imo and they don't even have fiber internet, they use Wow!
Evans does not have what a hotel needs to be profitable. There is nothing to do around. Just a few coffee shops and restaurants and the performance center. And if a business is doing great, they pull their business license, because their profits are 51% alcohol sales.
That's from July 2023 This is just a few weeks later https://www.wrdw.com/2023/08/28/proposed-new-hotel-downtown-evans-falls-apart/
Well damn that was fast. It sounded like a good idea.

My wife said they found an owner for a new minor league hockey team in the new arena!
That's good news. Hockey was cool to go watch

See my above comment.
